Lose Weight in Just a Couple Of Lunch Hours? The Zerona Laser

Can you imagine using your lunch hour to actually lose weight without any pain or mess or fuss? Well, it might actually be fact, not fiction. The Zerona laser is the newest treatment that claims to help people lose significant inches and fat without surgery, downtime, or serious side effects.

Naturally, this sounds amazing and I had to check it out for myself. As a beauty and fashion expert and reviewer, I often get the unique opportunity to review and try products and services before they're widely available. In full dislosure here, I'm hoping to personally try the Zerona laser, but I am skeptical. If something is too good to be true… it usually is.

New York Chiropracter Dr. Nicholas Ungaro, Founder of Better Body Solutions in NYC, was kind enough to tell me more about this Zerona laser and how this body-sculpting treatment (a lunch-hour investment for potential permanent body sculpting results), works. Dr. Ungaro has been a certified chiropractic sports professional in practice for over 20 years.

The Zerona laser looks like a creature from a sci-fi movie with four move-able pod "arms" that can be directed at various parts of the body." It's a cold, (not hot), low level laser that emits light at a wavelength and frequency that communicates directly with your fat cells. The laser stimulates natural bodily processes. In this case, it stimulates the fat cells to form a temporary pore and through which the fatty material can "leak" and be picked up by the lymphatic system and processed for removal by the body. The fat cells continue to extrude fat into your body for up to 24 hours after the treatment (so you definitely need to have a healthy lifestyle and exercise, and you have to drink a LOT of water during the treatments. The typical treatment program consists of six forty-five minute sessions performed over the course of two weeks. Some patients will need more than the two weeks of treatment to reach their fat-reduction/inch-loss goal. Some patients will need to repeat the treatment sometime later on if they do not follow a healthy lifestyle.

Why Are Chiropracters Doing These Treatments and Not Medical Doctors? Chiropracters are not medical doctors, but they seem to understand low level laser therapy better and use it more often than medical doctors, because they've been using using laser therapy for range-of-motion, pain control, etc. for years. They are trained on the laser already, whereas M.D.'s generally have not used the laser technology. When the Zerona laser has been used by cosmetic surgeons it has more often been to emulsify fat cells prior to more traditional, liposuction surgery.

The positives: The zerona laser is a cold laser that doesn't burn the skin. It's completely painless. As of now, no negative side effects have been reported (although a potential plus is that is some cases it may actually normalize cholesterol -- this could also be due to diet and exercise changes, however). It's a lunch hour procedure, all you have to do is lie on a table with goggles on for about 45 minutes. In six sessions average results claimed are a reduction of 3-4 inches on the treated areas. Some results in as little as two weeks. You do not need anesthesia (this ia a big plus) nor do you have to recuperate, or risk infection. Everyone is different, however. A responsible healthcare provider will provide you with an opinion of the risks, benefits and possible outcomes (and complications) in your particular case and what he or she feels is most likely to be the end result. Then you can make your choice accordingly.

The Negatives: Currently, there don't seem to be too many (other than the cost), and varying satisfaction with the results. The lack of complaints, however, may also be due to the fact that this laser has been used for pain reduction, primarily, and not for fat reduction. It may just bee too new to have gathered negative data and dissatisfied customers. Also, the FDA doesn't regulate this type of treatment, although it has been "reviewed" for fat reduction use by the FDA. The laser in the Zerona device has already received 510(k) market approval from the FDA for use as an adjunct to Liposuction. The treatment itself is painless and easy, but not effortless. You have to prepare for it. For example, Dr. Ungaro insists upon a battery of blood tests, and then recommends diet changes and possibly, homepathic supplements/medication adjustments, before he will agree to administer the laser treatments. And, essential to the success of the treatments is that you must also exercise and drink large amounts of water to help flush the waste/fat/toxins out of your body. Another downside is cost. Although it may cost less than lipsuction, it is still pricey: Dr. Ungaro's treatments at $2,800 for 6 treatments plus the cost of blood tests and any supplemental nutrients or medications seems to be about the average for six treatments around the Country. Your insurance may or may not cover the blood tests, but not the cosmetic laser treatments. My internet research pulled up just one web site with consumer complaints: http://www.realself.com/zerona-laser/reviews Of the five recent reviews posted there, four were negartive. However, these types of sites tend to atttract people who have fantastic results, and those who definitely had a negative result. There are usually few to no in-betweens.

Who Is A Candidate? Dr. Ungaro says everyone can benefit, except for women who are pregnant or breast feeding, or those with serious liver problems. Women, especially those who have had a life transition (e.g. had a baby, newly divorced) seem to seek this out the quickest, but Zerona patients are generally anyone who doesn't want an invasive procedure like liposuction or who has had liposuction in the past but want a non-invasive 'touch-up" or who just want something generally less expensive than liposuction. You still need to be in reasonably good health. I frankly think this treatment would appeal most to men. At least when it comes to beauty treatments and products, guys always want the easiest, fastest route to their goal, without fuss or bother. Women seem to be a bit more patient.

Consult Your Doctor & Keep Expectations, Reasonable: This is not a treatment for obesity, or a substitute for a healthy lifestyle, diet and exercise. I'd caution that while some people have gotten amazing results, not everyone does. The average inches lost according to Dr. Ungaro's coverage of 21 patients, is 4.6 inches. That is incredibly impressive, but perhaps a positive attitude and diet and exercise changes really account for some of the success (not just the laser). As a way to jump start a healthier lifestyle, if you can afford it, perhaps it is a good place to begin. In addition, since chiropractors are not medical doctors, I would highly recommend that you consult with your own MD before embarking on the treatment, just to be on the safe side. Furthermore, sticking to a low fat diet, drinking lots of water, ensuring good nutrition, and doing a moderate amount of exercise, are all free (and you can get results from just that).

I will be reporting back to you when I do go through the Zerona Laser Treatments and I will be honest about what I experience. Meanwhile, If you are interested in learning more about the Zerona laser and/ or want a consultation with Dr. Ungaro, you can visit http://www.betterbodysolutions.com/

Any update yet on the procedure? I've been thinking of doing it myself

Thanks for your comment.

I did step #1 - blood tests.

I am going to see Dr. Ungaro tomrorow, actually, to hear about the results of my tests and to schedule next steps.

However, once you commit to the laser treatment you have to schedule a block of time to do the procedures, properly. Due to Fashion Week arriving in less than a month, I won't be doing the actual treatments until mid September. But I promise I will let you know how it goes as I'm going through the treatments and of course, I'll give my assessment, afterwards. If you can stick it out another month, I should have more information for you.

I had 6 treatments from Midwest Medical Aesthetics in Overland Park, Kansas, and received no results whatsoever. I do not recommend this procedure!

I am sorry you didn't get the results you wanted. But in all honesty, I didn't the first time, either. The second time I did this with additional nutritional support and diet modifications, I lost 11.1 inches. The company didn't pay me to say this, it is the truth that I lost this much in inches. Your doctor should investigate why it didn't work and offer you additional sessions. Not everyone's body works the same way. But Dr. Nicholas Ungaro did offer additional sessions and support. And the second time I did lose. To see my final report on the second time, visit: http://www.advicesisters.net/2010/02/i-lost-over-11-inches-on-zerona-laser.html
