Prada L'eau Ambree Eau de Parfum

Prada L’Eau Ambrée Eau de Parfum 2.7 fl. oz. is striking from the stark, white outer carton with bold, Black lettering with the surprise of an embroidered gold metallic fabric patch in the middle, spelling "Prada" over the Prada Name on the Box. But the actual fragrance speaks softly. It is, actually, "discreetly impressive."

I'm not as familiar with Prada fragrances as I could be, so I'm looking (or rather, smelling) this scent with fresh eyes. This newest Prada scent, created by perfumer Daniela Andrier of Firmenich, is a new addition to the Prada Classic range. The notes are actually engraved right onto the gold plaque at the top of the bottle, so you'll know what you're smelling. The first, fleeting impression, is of bright citrus--actually, Italian mandarine and lemon. But the heart includes romantic florals: May rose and gardenia jasminoides. The drydown is where the real action occurs, as patchouli, Somalian oppoponax, vanilla, and modern amber mix to create a soft, sheer, amber scent.

The name L’Eau Ambrée means "Ambery Water," and as it dries down, it does cover your skin with a amber as sheer and soft as a Summer cashmere sweater. The scent is beautifully blended and balanced, is neither fruity, nor floral, not oriental. It's sheer enough to wear year-round day or evening, so it would make a great signature fragrance. There's nothing heavy or demanding about it--spray with wild abandon and you still won't knock anyone over with too much fragrance. It is sophisticated, but user friendly. It smells expensive, but not garish. The women who wears this scent will be confident and powerful, elegant and feminine, but with no need to shout out loud, or be flashy or trashy.

I love the bottle. A heavy glass rectangle, laid on it's side, features an off-center spray diffuser, identifying L’Eau Ambrée as part of the Prada Classic collection. The base of the bottle is ink-black, rising from smoke to transparent, echoing Prada’s use of degradé in its ready-to-wear and accessories collections. There's a golden plaque featuring the engraved names of the key notes, sitting atop the bottle. The Prada name is also in gold on the body. The glass feels cool and elegant in your hand. You want to pick it up, and you want to also put it down to enjoy it's good looks.

L’Eau Ambrée launched this month exclusively to Neiman Marcus. It is available in 30, 50 ($76) and 80 ($104) ml Eau de Parfum, and in an 80 ml refillable atomizer ($117; refill with funnel $78). Matching Body Lotion, Bath and Shower Gel. Body Cream, and a Body Powder with Puff, are also available. If you're looking for a special gift for the holidays, pieces from this collection will show your good taste. If you're looking for a new scent that you can wear now, and for a long, long time to come. L’Eau Ambrée may become your newest "go-to" scent.

The advertising campaign image for L’Eau Ambrée, photographed by Steven Meisel, is a modern interpretation of ancient bas-reliefs, echoing elements of Prada’s 2009 Spring/Summer campaign. The L’Eau Ambrée advertisement and video shows Prada muses playfully and seductively spraying the fragrance on to one another. Like modern statues, the women hint at our urge to transcend the speed and pressures of modern life, and return to a place of contemplation and reflection. Click here to see the Ad Spot Video
