Oral B Pulsonic Rechargeable Toothbrush Slims Down

Many households have electric toothbrushes. They have been a staple for good dental health, for deaces. But the bases are often bulky and ugly, and the brushes themselves can be heavy and tiring to use.

Enter Pulsonic, Oral-B's slimmest and lightest sonic toothbrush, ever! The model I tried was a Rechargeable Power Toothbrush "kit" that includes a handle, a charging station, a small, Precision Tip Brush Head, and the full sized, Oral-B Pulsonic Brush Head. The battery can last up to two weeks on one charge so you can take it with you without the charging unit, if you're going away for a long weekend, and the battery has no cadmium, lead or mercury, so it's better for the environment, too.

Model at the Caravan Show, by Alison Blackman

The brush itself looks sleek and modern, almost sexy (in toothbrush terms, anyway). In fact, during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York last September, the Caravan runway show at the Metropolitan Pavillion had models holding this toothbrush as they strutted down the catwalk, just to show how fashion-forward a toothbrush can be.

Weighing in at just one pound, the toothbrush feels light as a feather, in your hand. And, the slim base and toothbrush shape takes up less space on your bathroom counter (the toothbrush itself fits into a normal toothbrush holder so you can put the base away if you're not charging the brush all that often. It is quiet and easy to use, and it's also powerful, effectively whitening teeth by reducing up to 94% of surface stains in 2 weeks. That would be thanks to more than 27,000 vibrations per minute, and a specially-designed Pulsonic brush head that contours to the teeth to provide an effective clean. The brush head tickles your gums like the powerful brushes at the dentist's office (I quickly got used to it). You also get a small, thin, precision tip brush head that is designed to help remove plaque and stains between teeth. Additional features include a clean mode, and a sensitive mode. The "Clean” mode provides an effective cleaning for your teeth, while the "Sensitive" mode is designed to cleanse your tongue, and other sensitive areas. The toothbrush pauses, briefly, every thirty seconds to remind you to move it to another one of the four quadrants of your mouth, and a two-minute timer indicates when the ideal, over all brushing time has been reached.

I have to admit that while it's hard to get all worked up about something as essential but mundane as a toothbrush, I actually look forward to using this one. You can get less expensive models of electric toothbrushes, but there is a pleasure factor with this one, along with it's health benefits. Electric toothbrushes can last for years, while an ordinary toothbrush lasts maybe for a month or so. An electric toothbrush also can be more effective in cleaning your teeth, so you might save yourself from cavities and deteriorating gums, and other things that would send you to a costly visit to the dentist. And, if you enjoy the process (and use the timers on the brush) you may brush better, and longer.

The set makes a thoughtful and long-lasting gift for someone you care about, and alittle but beneficial splurge, for yourself. The suggested retail price for the Oral B Pulsonic set is $69.99. A brush head replacement set with three full sized brushes and one precision tip brush head will run you another $10-$18.00, depending upon where you shop.

All of the Oral B products are available in a variety of online and retail stores. You can also visit the Oral B Pulsonic Web Site for more information, discount coupons, and purchase locations.
