Anna Sui Fall 2009 Runway Show Fall Fashion Week 2009 -An Advice Sisters Feature with exclusive Video! *text and photos by Alison Blackman Dunham
Whenever Fashion Week rolls around, one of the most coveted invitations is to the Anna Sui Runway Show. It's one of my favorites. The designer has a way of making everyone in the always-packed tent walk away feeling good. The clothes are always attractive, fun, and desirable. One of the signs of a great designer are the number of people in the audience wearing her designs-- not just because they were paid to be there. I saw plenty of sensational, Sui original pieces scattered in the huge crowd.
Not surprisingly, A-l.isters of all ages packed the tent, including Monet Mazur, Peaches Geldoff, Lisa Marie, Taylor Momsen and musician Rob Thomas.
*these photos courtesy of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week The brightly colored and ornamented clothes combined with funny/cute hats (by James Coviello) and tiaras, are mostly for a hip, young, economically-advantaged, audience. I can't see many women wearing these as workday looks, but I can't help loving them. I think they're so lighthearted and yet on an individual basis, so wearable and enduring. That's what makes Anna Sui deigns so endearing and so great. You can take just one piece, make it your own, and love it forever.
One of the top models with attitude to walk any runway, Agness Deyn, opened and closed the show.
Anna Sui sent more than 50, fantasy looks prancing down the runway--all with a "rich girl/boho vibe" with a "Belle Epoque" themed runway backdrop created by cartoonist, Oliphant. This photo was taken before the show, as guests were just beginning to arrive. The show reminded me of society girls going shopping in flea markets and vintage clothing shops, and then showing off their eclectic finds. Although I wasn't backstage for this show, the makeup was created by Pat McGrath and the Hair, by Garren. I thought it was cute how the models walked casually down the runway, sometimes in girly little groups. It created a casual but social, field that were part Moulin Rouge, part Itchycoo park). From pretty day to evening dresses, to fanciful outfits (sparkling with jewelry by Erickson Beamon) for special occasions, it was a great show. Anna Sui never disappoints!
I took a break from the photographer's riser to be a guest and sit in an assigned seat. These photos that I took from the top of the tent aren't the greatest, but I loved the energy in the room. Everyone left smiling!
