Carolina Herrera Runway Show Fall Fashion Week 2009 -An Advice Sisters Feature

*text and photos by Alison Blackman Dunham

Elegant, graceful, sophisticated Carolina Herrera, embodies her own designs. This Venezuelan-born designer is a favorite of women with power and fame, not to mention deep pockets!  Her Fall 2009 collection on February 16th in Bryant Park was classic Herrera but a bit darker with more subdued elegance.  Colors, when they apepared, were deep and jewel-toned violet and teal, moss green, bronze, navy and just a few bright pops of pink, and blue.

Even the runway was almost completely dark, with only a spotlight highlighting each model as she walked. Perhaps the darkness  mirrors the economic times, but there was nothing tacky about Herrera's vision for Fall.  Elegant fabrics such as this off the shoulder, silvery gown, bare skin and backless gowns, and flowing but not fussy gowns, reigned. There were also layered looks with fitted jackets and sleek pants.

These are clothes that make any woman look powerful, rich, and elegant, and I loved the copper accents that were frequently used both for the hair, in belts, and in accessories and trims.  These, apparently, were inspired by ornamental components of the 18th Century. They looked spirited and modern. Also back-to-the-future were a lot of slim evening dresses were slim with mermaid hems, and cocktail dresses with below-the-knee lengths.

In you missed the Advice Sisters Carolina Herrera backstage feature, I am including this exclusive video that I made backstage at the Carolina Herrera show. It includes not just backstage interviews with M.A.C. Makeup Artist Romero Jennings, and Wanda Ruiz from Creative Nail Design, but also gives you that "front-row seat" for some of the actual runway show, plus my thoughts, after the show.

Backstage, at the end of the very successful show, there are always congratulations.  Carolina Herrera gives out hugs and accepts her well-deserved accolades!
