PORTS 1961 Fall 2009 Runway Show Fall Fashion Week 2009 -An Advice Sisters Feature (exclusive video) *all text and photos by Alison Blackman Dunham
Ports 1961 was established in 2004. Each season, the very talented designer, Tia Cibani, creates a theme focusing on a different culture or geographic region each season. For Fall 2009 it was the exotic Mughal courts of India and "Nur Jahan," a legendary beauty and an Empress of Persian Descent.
A Punjabi brass band, Red Baraat Festival! (the only one of it's kind in the States), led by drummer Sunny Jain, provided live, hypnotic music as the models walked down the runway. The clothes, inspired from Tia's recent Indian travels, featured regal colors of gold, saffron, henna red, ruby, jasmine white, moonstone grey, sapphire blue, Fennel green, and begonia pink. I liked the practical yet romantic fitted bodices with narrow waistlines ending in full, flowing hems. The attention to detail and the modern, wearable, but exotic clothes just look fun and elegant. There were lots of short, and some long dresses, many reminiscent of Indian Saris. The casually elegant achkan coats, slim choga day coats, cropped angarka jackets, fitted choli forms, dresses with asymmetrical closures, and traditional Salwar pants, were made modern and urban, featuring brocade satin, lace, damask, velvet, and other rich, luxe fabrics, but they still retained India-centric, details. These are pieces to invest in now, and enjoy for years to come.
Designer Tia Cabana is one of my all-time favorite designers, always bringing new, wearable, romantic, slightly edgy designs to adoring fans. She has plenty to do backstage, but of course, she also has to explain her concept for the Fall 2009 show to reporters...over, and over, and over again!

Two elegant ways to dress up this Fall (and note the amazing, two-toned boots)
There were a number of beautiful, India-inspired designs in vibrant colors...a true departure from past season's subtle and more somber tones, thankfully!
