CLEVER LITTLE BEAUTY FINDS: It's the "little things" that make life easier and more fun. Here are some of the cleverest ideas of the seasonIn our Summer 2005 review review we introduced Breath Palette Toothpaste $4.50/tube with an awesome 32 flavors to suit every taste--but there's even more! There is also a Mouthwash to Go Kit $7.00 containing individual containers of mouthwash to coordinate with the toothpaste flavors. They left my mouth feeling fresh, energized and clean, while I enjoyed a hint of flavor! The Breath Palette Toothpaste Kit $22.00 bundles five, full-sized flavors of Breath Palette Toothpaste together for gift-giving. I tried the"Sweet Tooth" collection: Vanilla, Bitter Chocolate, Caramel, L'Espresso, Pumpkin Pudding flavors. There is also a "Smoothie" collection: Fresh Yogurt, Monkey Banana, Kiwi Fruit, Strawberry, Blueberry); the exotic "East Meets West" with flavors such as Darjeeling Tea and Curry; and a "Zen" collection with interesting flavors such as cola, lavender. These are all authentic in taste, and utterly delicious! These products are popular in Japan, and are fast becoming popular with the American market. They are not designed specifically for children, but the flavors are so delicious that getting your family to brush better and more often might be worth the price alone. There are other benefits, too. All the ingredients are derived from natural herbs, including the flavorings and the products are sugar and alcohol free. It cleans teeth with ultra-fine micro beads which are gentle to teeth. Xylitol helps prevent plaque buildup, too. Try it, you'll love it! Redness getting you riled up? Get You're Bluffing $20.00 by Benefit and banish the red, instantly. This effective redness Concealing wand of buttermilk-yellow stick of cream blends with your fingertips for touch-ups, anywhere, anytime. For larger areas (eg. red chin) dust on some Bluff Dust $22.00 with the included powder puff. The soft, lemon-yellow powder (shows up neutral on you skin) evens out your skin tone, neutralizes redness, and illuminates your complexion. Use it under or over your makeup for more flawless skin, in and instant! When you've simply got to look bright-eyed, reach for one of these little miracles, also from Benefit: Ooh La Lift $18.00 is a wand of pink cream containing raspberry and botanical extracts, with pink, reflecting pigments. Apply three dots to that puffy, under-eye area and watch the magic transformation! Dark circles from too much worry and lack of sleep? Get EyeCon $26.00, a light cream containing orange and apple fruits & japonica leaf. We don't know the chemistry, but we do know the cream definitely fades dark circles and helps diminish fine lines.
OT Over Time is a new company founded by former Procter & Gamble employees. The market is the youth sector, but most of the grown men we shared Pit Defense Deodorant $3.49 and Deodorant/Anti Perspirant $3.49 didn't think the products were kid stuff, at all! They raved about the fun, scents, the eye-catching yellow packaging with bold, red graphics, and they deemed the products "highly effective." "Vertical Blast" is a clean watermelon-y scent while "Power Rush" is musky. These products were designed just for guys, so if you're a parent who wants to encourage your son to use a deodorant, these will do the trick. But beware--the chances are that you'll find Dad, and other family members wanting to use these, too. There are days when your feet just feel so hot, tired and sore that you can't go one more step. Give tired toes a quick blast of cooling energy with a great, new product: Cool Feet Airbrush Catwalk Heels $20.00 by ModelCo. Natural extracts of papaya revitalize, bamboo help soften, while chamomile soothes and the scent of peppermint, revitalizes--but the main thing I love about this product is the fine mist that is easily absorbed without having to touch or rub the skin, that delivers an icy cold blast of instant relief. This is a must-have for anyone who walks or stands a lot, or as a pampering thank-you to your feet for another day on the job! Out! Out! Shiny spots! Theres nothing more irritating than carefully applying your makeup, only to see spots of shine where you don't want them, not long afterwards. Save face (pun intended) by simply blotting away the "brilliance" with Blot Film $15.50/30 sheets by M.A.C. Cosmetics. A slim, cardboard envelope hold these thin, blue-tinted little wonders. The sticky dot on the top of the package automatically pulls out one sheet at a time, Press the sheet against your face and your spots will vanish! Another clever shine banisher is Voila! $15.00 by Napoleon Perdis. The plastic holder, which looks like a mini-wax-paper box, contains a roll of 23 feet of blotting paper that sucks up excess oil without disturbing your makeup. Take it wherever you go. Simply tear off as much as you want, press on face and Voila! shine is gone. Hunky Scott Barnes is not only a celebrity makeup artist with a great makeup line, he has some nifty beauty accessories, too. One we adore is a the Flipout Mirror, a business card-sized, slim mirror for purse or pocket that is a triptych with three attached mirrors to give you a three-dimensional view. You can see all sides, now! VISIT THE 'WHAT WORKS" ARCHIVES FOR COLUMNS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED E. I. Solutions is a new line of makeup and skincare debuting at Sephora and Sephora.com this September. We are fortunate to be able to review some of their products for you! One that I personally like is the Lip Primer, $28.00. This tube of sea green gel nourishes your lips with aloe vera, anti-oxidants, and botanical supplements while it helps keep your lipstick in place and reduces feathering. As long as you're going to fork over the cash for a lip treatment, why not make it one that keeps your lipstick looking lovely, too? Also worthy of note is the E.I. Long Wear Makeup Remover $20.00 4 fl. oz. The light and dark blue, oil-free, unscented, liquid, is infused with rose water for added hydration and comfort on your skin. The ingredients swirl in the bottle like a lava lamp. Fascinating but functional, because the powerful formula quickly dissolves even hard-to-remove makeup from mascara to lipstick. It looks so gentle you'll wonder if it works--but it does! Simply shake the bottle to combine the ingredients, apply to a cotton ball, and apply to skin, with no smudging, tugging or burning. Pevonia is known for spa-quality body and skin care, but sometimes it's what you put in your body that helps the beauty, come out. Pevonia Botanica gets into the tea-for-health connection with new Spalasium Holistic Vital-I-Tea, a set a four, beautifully boxed, holistic teas that can be sipped at upscale spas, or tried at home in a four jar sampler set (enough to brew at least a dozen cups of tea). Housed in square, mini-cubes of green glass with cork stoppers, these loose leaf teas blends are high in antioxidants, essential to good health inside and out. Each is very different in function and character: Vital-I Tea "Energize" is a spicy blend of black tea, cardamom pods, whole clove, cinnamon, ginger root, nutmeg and peppercorn that tastes as good as it smells. Vital-I Tea "Renew" is a fruity mix or orange and lemon peel, apple pieces, hibiscus, sunflower and rose petals, lavender flowers, black currants, and natural grape essence--while providing anti-aging benefits. Vital-I Tea "Slenderize" smells of cranberries, elderberries, black currants and rooibos "red" tea to eliminate toxins from your body. Vital-I Tea "Rejuvenate" is an herbal, exotic blend of Japanese sencha, Siberian ginseng, marigold flowers and passion fruit essence. These are exotic and make a unique and thoughtful gift for men and women. CLEVER HOUSE HOME ENHANCERS: It's the "little things" that make life easier and more fun and gift giving, successful..at home, too! Here are a few wonderful ideas to make your life easier, more satisfying, and more beautiful!
Sometimes linens and clothing just dont smell fresh, even though they are clean. Whether youre on the road or at home, you can easily freshen up fabrics with Sarah Michaels Timelights Linen & Lingerie Spray in Twilight $3.95 8oz. Does your lingerie smell like an airplane baggage hold? One spray of this lightly-scented product and it will be reborn! Use this multi-tasker to add a hint of romance to bedclothes, or spray lightly on the sofa if the dog has been sitting on it your guests will never know! We love the warm glow of scented candles, the slow and steady whiff of burning incense, and the immediate gratification of scented room sprays, but sometimes you need a longer lasting (and non-flammable) way to scent a room. Xela Aromasticks $35.00 8 oz, $60,00 16 oz contain a packet of slim, bamboo reeds that you place into a clear glass bottle filled with a scented, essential oil that has a round wooden top with a hole in the middle. Once the sticks absorb the scented oil, they spread it throughout your room in a long-lasting but not overpowering way. Before guests arrive, or for a quick burst of fragrance, simply flip the sticks around so the saturated ends diffuse scent into the room. We loved the new fragrance "Spice." This is an intoxicating mix of clove, cinnamon, vanilla and ginger-mmmm! Xela Aromasticks are also available in Invigorating Citrus, Calming Woods, Soothing Nursery, and Uplifting floral. These will make a great hostess or holiday gift, too. Treat yourself to a tiny bit of calm in a tin! Temple Balm $7.95 by LUSH cant eliminate all your stress, forever, but it helps you get a handle on jet lag, normal stress, and even fatigue -- in a flash! A pillbox-sized tin holds help -- a solid lime, lemon, grapefruit, rosemary and geranium scented "balm" to soothe and revitalize your mind and spirit. It is made with honey, water, mango butter, apricot kernel oil, and avocado oil. It sounds good enough to eat, but dontjust rub it on your pulse points and watch your motor start to rev up, again! Do your Fall clothes smell a bit musty from months in the closet? Perk them up instantly with just a few spritzes of nifty, anti-bacterial, odor-removing Fabric Fresh $10.00 8 fl. oz by The Laundress will perk up less-than-fresh-smelling fabrics from sheets and shirts, to sneakers! The Laundress comes in several different scents. We tried the "Classic" scent which is a sweet musk with citrus, and a hint of yang and sandalwood. There's also Cedar with spice and a hint of citrus; "Baby" (vanilla musk, bergamot & lavender) and "Lady" amber, citrus, green notes). TIP:There are travel-sized sprays as well to freshen an airplane seat, hotel sheets and blankets and whatever else needs a hit of "clean" - get one for your next trip! It's great to take the romantic glow and scent of candles when you travel. One way to do this safely is with the Zum Glow Candle in a Tin $15.00 7 oz/30 hr; 2 oz.; 12 hr mini $5.50 by Indigo Wild. These all-natural, generously scented candles are made of white soy wax, and have a lead-free wick so you don't leave a trail of black smoke in the air. The sturdy tin makes this a great choice for travel, whether you're lighting it in a luxury suite, or at a campground. There are nine sensuous scents that won't break your budget. We sampled "Lavender Mint," a soft minty scent with a hint of sweetness and "Rosemary Mint," an exhilarating minty herbal blend (with bits of real rosemary herb scattered on the top) that made us feel ready to party! My favorite is "Cinnamon," a classic, sassy spice that will remind you of the holidays to come. I also like the Zum Glow in a Glass $22.00 7 oz. This is the same high quality candle as the ones in tins, but these ivory-colored candles come in chic, frosted class votives that enhance any decor. I like "Frankincense & Myrrh," an exotic blend of woodsy and sweet spices that will instantly turn a boring boudoir, into a mysterious "Casbah." If you aren't into candles, but want to enjoy some of Indigo Wild's scents, try Zum Mist $10.00 4 fl. oz. A tin bottle with spray pump is full of 100% pure, essential oil to mist everything from your room, to your clothing to your sheets, to your skin. They have aloe for softening and soothing, and vegetable glycerin that functions as a skin conditioner. TIP:To make an essential oil scent last even longer, spray a bit on the light bulb in your lamp. As the bulb heats up, the scent will be diffused throughout the room! EYES: This season, go for deep, vibrant, jewel-toned colors either on lids, or (for the more timid) as mascara or liner. Strong, earthy and matte looks are perfect for Fall's seasonal palette, or be a bit daring with shadows that have glitter or shimmer.Deep, vibrant color carries style this Fall. Sue Devitt Studio melds these colors with the romance of Persia and Arabia into the "One Thousand and One Nights" collection. In August you can begin brightening your eyes with five new Eye Shadows $18.00 from this collection. The Silky Sheen formula is a sheer wash of buildable, shimmery color such as "Agadir," a gorgeous golden olive, "Ensa," soft ivory, or "Casablanca," a peachy tangerine. Line lids or create a modern, smoky eye with 'Alexandria, " a deep, midnight blue. The Silky Matte shadow is more intense. Try "Tan, Tan," a deep, `warm chocolate. Trish McEvoy is known for sophisticated, subtle colors that are easy to apply, and make every woman look fashionable. For Fall, the Simply Gorgeous Collection features Eye Shadow $15.00 in wearable neutrals. "Cafe Latte," for example is a rich, semi-matte, medium brown that is fantastic as a soft, shadow liner, or blended onto lids. A slightly deeper shade is "Sable Bronze," a shimmery bronze that is simply stunning, especially for evening. Pair it with a highlight of peachy, pearly "Glamorous Gold," which makes an elegant lid color, too. Classic signs of Fall include Shetland sweaters, tweeds, and a chic trench. Bourjois Fall 2005 collection has interpreted these timeless fashions into complimentary makeup colors. One that we especially love is the Trio Effect Lumière Eye Shadow $18.00 "Les Artistiques." A rich, matte violet and a slightly shimmery deep taupe, can be used as a lid liner or shadow, while a light, yellowed ivory balances the other two colors. For added emphasis, use the Two-Tone Crème Eye Pencil $10.00 in "Cafe." TIP: the new way to line lids is inside and out. Apply the cream shade to the inner rim of your eyelid, and use the coffee shade to line the lower lashes. Clinque has come up with a clever product that will be a must have for every fashionista and ends the frustration of reaching for a liner pencil, only to find that it is too dull to use and no sharpener is handy. The Clinique Kohl Shaper for Eyes $15.50 is a slim pencil with a sharpener built right into the cap. The pencil body is triangular, which makes it easier to grip and allows you to apply a thin, medium, or thick, line. The pencils are soft and blendable and slip on without any struggle. These are intense, sexy colors and all are gorgeous, but if we had to pick favorites we'd suggest the traditional "Black Kohl," or modern "Black Amethyst," and "Blackened Teal." Also petty are a pewter, taupe, deep brown, and deep blue. Those with sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers will be delighted to know these are 100% fragrance free, ophthalmologist tested, and allergy tested. While you are at the Clinique counter, get one of the new Colour Surge Eye Shadow Quads $25.00. Each slim, clear, silver-topped, mirrored compact holds four creamy, lightweight, silky, powder shadows with two applicators (sponge for smoothing, tapered brush for blending and contouring). There are several pretty quartets in Nude ("Teddy Bear"), Tawny ("Spicy," "Island Breeze") and Violet ("Polar Bear,: "Plum Seduction"). We tried "Plum Seduction," a violet-themed quartet of light, medium and dark colors that can be blended or used individually for lids, highlight, and liner. These are not the barely-there sheers of summer. They are soft but intense to create eyes with more color but not harshness, just right for Fall. We love changeable compacts that allow us to choose exactly the colors we want. Custom Compacts by Cover Girl are new and nifty. A slim, square, plastic Compact $2.99 has four magnetized holes in which to place your choice of colors. They pop in and out, easily but are secure by the magnets while in the case. The shadows are silky, sheer, blendable and long-lasting. Use just a little, or keep layering for more color. There are 14 choices of Custom Compact Eye Shadow Pots $3.49 each in a dazzling array of colors. Try "Tapestry Taupe," a deep, soft brown, and "champagne," a light warm ivory for lids and highlight. Top with Fantastic Lash Curved Brush Mascara $5.85 which gives you a generous "fan" of large, lush lashes, affordably. The brush nicely fits the curve of your eye so application is foolproof. It's gentle enough for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers, and lasts without flaking. Choose from "Very Black" or a black brown. We hope Cover Girl adds more colors! If you still haven't subscribed to the Advice Sisters Enews, click here: La Sienne is new to our review, and we are truly impressed with this new collection. A perfect trio for Fall eyes is Color Phase Eye Shadow 23.00. The luxe, gold-toned compact with clear lid holds a silky-smooth, luxurious and long-lasting powder pan with three colors in one beautifully coordinated for lid, liner and highlight. Perfect for the end of summer and all through the Fall is "Ivy," a bright pearly bronze for lids, eggshell for highlight, and deep green for liner. There are also pink/purple and taupe/mauve versions. The hottest color duo of the season might just be the Aveda Petal Essence Eye Color Duo $15.00 in "Azurite/Iris." The two-in-one color pan of powder shadow shimmers with jewel-like tones of shimmery teal and deep violet pearl that are trendy and still very wearable for day and evening. Both will work beautifully as a liner or shadow. More important, they are true to color and crease-resistant--especially important when you are applying deep colors like these. I personally love the new and amazing Mosscara $14.00 in Larkspur" that colors your lashes with a wearable, soft but deep violet while providing Aveda-high quality results. When music industry makeup artist Alison Padavan, created her own line of makeup called Rock Hard Cosmetics (new to our review this column). it seemed natural for her to create a collection that reflected makeup and color trends in the music industry. We want to report that non-rock stars will quickly warm to this exciting line. Lethal Lash $14.50 is a water based formula that is oil free, goes on wet and natural looking, dries in a flash, doesn't' clump, is safe for contact lens wearers, has deep, intense, color, but washes off easily with soap and water. It comes in Basic Black, but we hope that Ms. Padavan will make this wonderful, volumizing mascara in more colors. Meanwhile, the black is a must-have! We first reviewed Jouer in our Spring 2005 Column and we marveled at the plastic rectangles with peek-a-boo, mirrored tops. The units slide together so you can select just the colors and products you want to tote with you. We also loved the innovative, cream-to-powder products that go on moist and smooth. If you are already a fan of Jouer (or just want to try it) choose the Cream Eyeshadow $18.00 in "Chiffon," a sheer, iridescent ivory that gives lids or brow just a hint of pearly shimmer and is a welcome relief from too many dark or smoky shadows. Colors that stand up to rich earthtones on your agenda? Try the ten new shades of Prestige Eye Shadow $3.25. Slightly shimmery shadows come in clear-lidded, round compacts with a cross-hatched embossed design. My favorite lid look is "Cast Iron," a gorgeous, shimmery olive paired with a deep, dark green "moss" or deep teal "Indigo" as a liner or accent. Gold-flecked "Empire" is a pleasing, medium peachy-pink and "Chiffon" is a pretty, softened rose. "Caribe" is a soft brown that will work it's magic on everyone. Kanebo Eye Color Duo $28.00 features new, complimentary color combos that are rich, dramatic, crease-resistant and so beautiful to behold in their chic, pewter-y compacts that you imagine how fantastic they'll look on your eyes. For Fall, try "Mode," two squares of softened, jewel-toned powder so silky you'll think it's a cream. A deep plum (great for a liner or dramatic eye), is coupled to a universally-flattering, shimmery taupe. "Tea Ceremony,"just for Fall, pairs a powder lime green with a square of rich, sheer, purple "gel" that is amazingly easy to apply with fingertip or brush as a lid color, and with a thin brush, as a nifty eye liner. Sneak Peek: Are you ready to party? We received some advance samples of the Bourjois 12.31.2005 Party Collection. Glitter is back, in a huge way, for the holidays. The neat, clear lucite bottles with brushes attached to the tops of Suivez Mon Regard Loose Powder Eye Shadow $16.00 in "Étoile d'Argent," or "Or Pépite let you brush unabashedly bright, bold glitter on eyelids (or elsewhere--we dabbed it on lips and slicked on a gloss for shine). The intense, sparkling shimmer will lift your spirits and put you in a festive mood--but not until November, 2005 when the 12.31.2005 collection hits stores. Sometimes it's not just the product that is improved, but the means of delivery. That is certainly true with Lash Perfection Mascara $7.75 by the always high quality but low priced, Max Factor. The slim, tapered, IFX brush looks like a bunch of tiny, soft, spikes, designed to provide more control when coating lashes. The result is good coverage of color from root to tip without globs or clumps for lashes that look full and fantastic. It is best to ditch mascaras after six months, so as long as you're going to get a new one, try Rich Black, Soft Black, Black Brown, and Deep Blue. Or, get them all and change the color with your mood and wardrobe. We love products that give you two uses in one. The new, Laura Geller Line and Define $25.00 dual-ended mascara-liner combo eliminates clutter in your makeup bag and gives you two products for the price of one. Make your eye looks trendy with the "Olive" liner/mascara combo. The look is new, but daytime-friendly. TIP: for a "smoky" eye that is long-lasting and subtle (or if your liner isn't perfect) simply apply, then smudge with Q-tip or fingertips! Another nice, dual-ended, cream eye shadow and liner called Perfect Eye Wand $22.00 is from Ramy. The color is not black, not brown, but instead, a neutral, sophisticated, mahogany. This gel-pen version of the popular, Ramy, powder liner best selling powder liner, The shadow side has a soft, pearly taupe with subtle bronze undertones, and the liner side features a soft, blendable gel pencil to line a little, or a lot. This is perfect for travel, with a versatile color combo to go from subtle to smoky/sexy without having to lug lots of makeup around. Ramy's celebrity clients include Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie, Debra Messing and Renee Zellweger, but but he also works with cancer survivors and patients *Ramy's book about looking and feeling beautiful when dealing with cancer will be out shortly and I will be reviewing it in the Advice Sisters bi-monthly Enews (zine)Click here to subscribe *fill out the form completely to get your own copy. Giorgio Armani Eye Mania is an ultra-sophisticated quartet of shadows with colors enhanced by a golden shine. paired are two, complimentary, but slightly different shadow colors that create an intense, smoky eye, along with two contrasting ones that soften them for limitless looks. We tried "#1," which is inspired by the color of the Mediterranean. Inside the signature, round, matte black, mirrored compact are four strips of color. The top shade is a slightly shimmery, slightly greyed light blue, followed by strip of deep teal, followed by a band of very light, lemon yellow, and finally a small strip of grey. Three other sets that will work beautifully with all the latest Fall fashion are in shades of pink, brown or taupe. For more intensity and definition, line eyes with an Armani Eye Liner Pencil $32.00. We suggest #12, an amazing, hard-to-define mix of blackened plum and charcoal that will work with virtually everything! Bobbi Brown has created a limited edition Eye Shadow $19.00, for her limited edition "Clay Collection," that blows basic brown shadows right out of the way! "Desert," is a fantastic new color. The soft, matte, yellowed, neutral medium beige gives your eyes modern take that works with earthtones of all types. The shadow is luxurious-- silky, creamy powder . It resists creasing and stays true to color. We particularly like "Desert" it paired with a daring plum or deep chocolate liner and mascara. Run to get this shadow no, because it won't be here forever.
L'Oreal Paris Illumination Loose Eye Color $6.95 is new and nifty. The first thing we noticed was the handy, clear pot (so you can see what color you want) and the all-in one top/applicator brush that keeps application more precise and less messy. Fine powder with a high-pearl finish gives eyelids a luminous glow. This long-wearing foundation does a lot for just a little cash and it comes in 14 stay-true colors. My personal favorites are "325 Limelight," a sheer, sparkling, lime green that looks fresh and new with earthtones and tweeds, and "#840 Sunrise," a sheer nude that gives lids a better than bare sparkle (great as a highlighter or for a sparkling base, too) but there are 8 shades to play with than can be used solo, matched, or layered for a multitude of effects!
Another new take on the traditional earth tones of fall comes from another trendy leader in makeup, M·A·C Cosmetics. We suggest Pro Color Palette X4. Start with the compact ($3.50) that stores four individual shadows ($9.00 each) you choose, or get the pre-selected Eye Shadow X 4, in "Free to Be Eyes:4", a classy quartet of quietly softened low-sheen pearls: soft mint green, deep blackened plum (great as a liner) beigy-pink, and a trendy, soft, medium browned taupe. On the opposite side of the spectrum, get a rock-star vibe by glitzing lids with long-lasting Eye Shadow $13.00 in hard-to-define, browned-mauve "Banshee," with sparkling, high-frost glimmer, or "Say, Yeh," a rusty, pearly coppery-peach with yellow frost (both are from the "Rebelrock" collection. Maybelline XXL Volume + Length Microfiber Mascara $7.95 has a dual-ended wand that helps make your lash dreams come true! One end of the wand has a base coat, the other, a lengthening mascara. First, brush your lashes with the base coat. Then, apply one or two coats of color. The result? Long lashes that dont clump or flake, and color that stays put until you take it off (easily, actually, with soap and water). Trust Maybelline to find an inexpensive way to make your dreams, come true! If a natural, "wet look" is what you like, Great Lash Clear Mascara $6.15 brings you a clear formula that conditions and washes off easily. Its even safe for contact lens wearers. To compliment the seasons earth tones, treat yourself to a new shadow duo such as Maybelline Expert Wear Shadow Duo $4.35 in "Roundtrip for 2." This pretty pair features soft eggshell shadow and a beige-y brown. Both are creamy colors with a creamy texture for long-lasting, semi-sheer color. Create a look thats cool and classy with a new, Maybelline Expert Wear Eye Shadow Quad $5.95 or perhaps, one of the fun, Maybelline 8-Pan Eye Shadow Kits $7.70. All should quickly quench your thirst for lovely but inexpensive eye looks this season. "Sultry," is the main word wed use to describe the new, Smoke Out Collection by trendy and sophisticated Urban Decay. The colors are intense, but tweaked with a hint of metallic shimmer or iridescence to soften the edges. Depending upon how much you apply, and how you apply it, the Eye Shadow $15.00 (five sexy colors) are deep and jewel-toned, blending easily into softer tones that you can layer and even use wet for more drama, or as a liner. A standout is "Twice Baked," a coppery brown with a witty, iridescent touch to keep the color fresh. Following the plum trend, try "Purple Haze," a deep amethyst with iridescence that gives is a glamorous glow. For more definition and a finishing touch, add a coordinating Eye Liner Pencil $14.00 in Khaki, Midnight Blue, Grassy Green, or "Purple Haze" (this soft plum purple looks awesome with the Eye Shadow of the same name).
Napoleon Perdis (new to our column) is actually Greek, with stores in Australia and more recently, the United States. Fans of his makeup line include Terry Hatcher, Paris Hilton and Paula Abdul. Mr. Perdis, however, claims inspiration from Hélèna Rubinstein, who also began her cosmetics empire in Australia (in 1902) and went on to win the hearts of women around the world. Napoleon Perdis Eye Patrol Eye Shadow $17.00 comes in a dozen shades, and gets your attention with bright, saturated colors in a triple-milled, pressed powder shadow that is hypo-allergenic, mineral oil-free, and crease resistant. The colors are intense but blendable. We tried "Private Noir," a deep cocoa with golden glimmer, which makes a wonderful liner and produces a modern, smoky eye. We'll be keeping our eyes out, for more Napoleon Perdis products! We are great fans of Pop Beauty, the fun, hip makeup line from London. We especially their versatile Eye Cake $19.00. Five, coordinating, silky, chic, long-lasting colors are striped across one generously-sized, round, powder cake-in-a-tin. Apply each shade alone, use the darkest shade as a liner, or blend them together for customized color. For Fall, we like "Mocha Eyes" with warm, rich colors that are perfect with earthtones. You get a light, camel glow, a tangerine/copper, burnt brick, a browned taupe, and a deep, dramatic, brown shimmer. There are a dozen, silky, long-lasting color combos in all. Get a few and get the fun of infinite eye looks, all season! There havent been a lot of blue shadows out lately. A shame, really. Happily, the Blue Bayou Collection from Lola has a standout Eye Shadow $18.00 called "Blue Bayou" thats blue, but not too. Its a modern light blue or a metallic blue, depending upon how you apply it. We love the fresh, iridescent/metallic sheen and the easily blend-ability. Apply a light touch for a wash of shimmer blue, or pile it on for retro fun. It's a nice change of pace when you want relief from deep earth tones, plums, and smoky eyes. |
LIPS: Wine-themed reds and pinks, berries and plums are perfect with Fall fashions, but if you deep colors too daunting, there are plenty of pretty, feminine earth tones and peachy-toned colors, too. Shimmery glosses are hot, with a bit more color and a little less glimmer than this summers' sheers. For full, sexy, lips, don't forget to add a new, "lip plumping" lip product to your makeup bag! Bulkier fabrics and deeper colors require more substantial makeup colors. If you prefer sheer color and shine, we recommend Sue Devitt' Studio's new Mini Lip Glosses $18.00 from the "One Thousand & One Nights" collection. Each slim, lip gloss has essential oils that nourish and heal chapped lips as the provide shimmery, gold-glimmered, long-lasting shine. Our favorites for Fall include: "Shiraz," a shiny, sheer, sparkling raspberry; "Taza," a burnt amber with a golden glitz, and "Manama," a sensuous burnt gold that will perk up a fading tan in a jiffy! There is also a silvery ivory and a shimmering blackberry that work particularly well over your favorite lipstick. The colors are long lasting and they make sun-parched lips feel new, again. M.A.C. We also like warm, coral-y "Luv-4-Ever" with enough pink so it won't clash with blue-toned colors. For mauve lovers, "Jazz-Y-Razz," is a deep mauve made sexy with high shine from the silvery-flecked top coat. These lip stains are very long-lasting but not a bit drying. These are just fantastic--and we love the bullet shaped, shiny, silvery cases. We hope that Biotherm keeps making more and more colors because were hooked. E.I Solutions Plumping Lip Gloss $18.00 comes in six shades of primarily pink and red (and a "Clear," too). We like the substantial, clear, wanded tubes and the light, green, apple scent. This product naturally plumps lips with a soft tingle (not a burning sting) and it protects and moisturizes with Vitamins C & E. The pearly tints are sheer and shimmery, leaving lips with pouty, long-lasting lasting shine and a bit of color. Our picks are "Spicy Cinnamon," a peachy spice that will go with all your earth-tones, this Fall, while "Soft Kisses," is a cheerful, cool toned berry. For more definition or a natural, matte, lip look, use E.I. Solutions Lip Enhance $16.00. The classy, gold-toned, dual-ended pencil has a good lip brush on one end, a swivel-up pencil in a natural rosed-beige, on the other. It's clever, it works, and we love it! This gloss gives lips a hint of color, lots of moisture, and a tingle (thanks to organic ginger and capsicum oil to stimulate your lips' own collagen and create a temporarily fuller, pout). The "Fiery Red" leaves a hint of red shine that looks super-sexy, but there's also a hot pink, a cinnamon, Hot Cocoa, and "Chestnut" (my personal favorite), to make lips look full and natural, with just a hint of non-shimmery, shiny, sheer color. For even more "va-voom," add a coat of juicy, super-shiny Glass Ultra Lip Gloss $15.00. It's super-wet-look featuring a bit of the scent it's named for. L'Oreal claims this is "zero-transfer," and actually, it is! The lipstick won't rub off easily (best to use an oil-based makeup remover) nor does the glossy top coat compromise it's wearability. Amazing, but true. My favorite is "#530," a soft, warm rose of medium intensity that will flatter most everyone, but in al there are a dozen new, fashion-forward colors to choose from in every color category. NAILS: Nail color plays a major role now. Deep, dramatic, plums, wine colors, classic reds, clear berries, and nearly black browns are being shown on runways, but pales, glittery formulas, and metallics are always popular, day and evening.Even though the summer shine is not high in the sky, your nails will still glisten and glow with shimmery pearls if you use a feminine, new nail polish by Stila $10.00. Slick on n "Fly-By-Berry," a soft, medium berry with a hint of rose, for a universally flattering color that works on everyones fingers and toes. It has enough color to coordinate beautifully with the deeper tones you will be wearing this Fall but it's not harsh or over-the-top, deep. We think it is a perfect day-to-evening look that takes you from the office to a special event, perfectly! Jessica's "Vineyard" collection is the newest Nail Polish $6.00 by Jessica Vartoughian, whose high quality, high performance products and hundreds of colors have won raves from celebrities and The Advice Sisters, alike. The colors in this newest collection are named after grapes and are all intense, deep, wine, plum and deep berries. "Spiced Shiraz," for example, is a deep raspberry with with a coppery glimmer, so it doesn't look garish on warmer skintones, while "Chilled Chambord is the cooler version. "Cabernet Crème" is a deep grape with a golden shimmer," while "Midnight Merlot," is a non-shimmery, cooler version. In the red family, "Berry Bordeaux," is a non-shimmery, cool, berry red, while "Vineyard Pinot" is the shimmery. golden-flecked cousin. All are quick drying, long lasting, and chip resistant. Notable is the suspended top coats, which means that the bottles never need to be shaken (or stirred) and the glitter won't fall to the bottom. It will stay suspended, affording you tons of nail bling with each brushstroke. Brilliant! China Glaze, new to our review this column, is a company recently acquired by American International Industries. Their other brands include Andrea, Ardell, Body Drench, Gigi, and a host of other popular products. We hope to review more of their products in future What Works Beauty Review Columns. Long for true couture on a modest budget? Put the Givenchy imprimatur on your Fall look without spending a fortune. Vernis Please! Nail Lacquer $14.00 by Givenchy gives you a master designer's take on new, now, nails. A fresh take is a stunning, bright, apricot with flecks of iridescent, coppery shimmer, simply called "#138 Incandescent Apricot." We especially like this multi-dimensional color with the rich fabrics touted this season. There are three additional new shades are: Metallic Night (#139), Electric Light (#140), and Magnetic Violet (#141). All come in a chic, clear cube of clear glass, topped with a black rectangle embossed with the Givenchy logo. This affordable little splurge is not only tote-able for touch-ups, the polish is top drawer. Sure, it's shiny and long-lasting as youd expect, but ingredients such as provitamin B5 strengthen against splits while making nails appear super-smooth and resist breakage, which is a good thing. Use 1-2 coats over base coat or treatment products. Follow with a topcoat for sealing benefits. Wait 1-2 minutes and apply Elizabeth Arden Speed Spray Nail Dryer. Essie Nail Polish $8.00 has won our hearts season after season, always producing high quality products that reflect the latest trends. For Fall, Essie takes a cue from the catwalks, again. The new Essie collection colors are primarily dark and intense, but the smooth, shiny, chip-resistant formulas make application a breeze. Try a warm, coppery shimmer such as "Over the Knee," a very dark brown with a hint of glimmer or "Deep Pockets," a super-shimmery, pure copper. "Sole Mate" is a very deep, rich purple/wine, and "Foot Loose" is a fun, blue-based, raspberry. We also liked "Thigh High," a very bright garnet with a hint of metallic that looks especially tempting on toes. Not part of the Fall collection but still stunning are "Eighteen Carrot," a shimmering antique gold and (for something avant-garde ala David Bowie), paint your nails with a dark-as-the-ocean, shimmery blue called "Aruba Blue." For less obvious bling, "Steppn Out" is a new, medium-sheer, light warm-pink that puts you in tune with today's pinks and berries, without going overboard As a change of pace from deep, dark nails, go light and natural with Le Vernis Multi-Eclat Nail Colour Natural Nail Perfector $16.00 by Clarins. The bling comes more from a dewy shine than all-out glitter, however. There is nothing better than loose, shimmer powder that is self-contained and easy to apply. La Sienne's Bronze Powder Pump $22.00 not only dusts a soft, bronze/bold glow onto your face and body, it comes in a handy, powder in a tube with attached brush and even comes with it's own, clear plastic tote bag. It's easy to apply wherever, whenver, and do it precisely and neatly. There are non-shimmery versions of loose powder in this line, too. Diamond Cream $35.00 is a new, dewy-cream gel from Make Up For Ever that creates a sheer, luminescent finish on face or body. We like the tube/pump applicator and the super-fast-dry non-scented formula. Most of all, we like the dewy and natural glow that you get from a teeny bit of this exciting product. We tried #4 Flesh" which gives a sheer, dewy shimmer to skin, but there are six other colors including white, porcelain pink, blue pink, terra cotta, and even a copper "#6" and a gold "#7." TIP: this product is great on it's own, but you can also mix it into foundation or body lotion to give these products new life and make your skin, glow. Loose powder "bling" fans will like Shine on Powder $25.00, an iridescent, loose powder that uses synthetic mother-of-pearl of varying sizes to reflect the light. There are four shades: Pink Porcelain, Amber, Caramel and Flesh. We tried "#5 Amber," a shimmery copper that will look super-sexy on tanned skin (or faux tans). TIP: Use this over your foundation to help it last longer, even out your skin tone and create a more flawless finish. Use a large brush or powder puffa little bling goes a long way!
