HAIR - We're starting with products for your hair and scalp, because tthe top of your head is the first thing the sun hits (unless you are wearing a hat). Your hair and scalp can be damaged by sun, wind, chlorine and other environmental factors. The following products protect, cleanse, style, moisturize, and help you handle tough summer hair problems.

Nearly all our reviews of FACE STOCKHOLM have been for their exceptional makeup products, but they also have four exceptional, professional formula hair care products that contain botanicals to nourish, soften, shine, and volumize. FACE STOCKHOLM Volumizing Daily Shampoo $16.00 and FACE STOCKHOLM Volumizing Daily Conditioner work together to tame limp and unmanageable hair. The unscented, beautifully colored ice-blue shampoo and it's partner, the conditioner, quickly and thoroughly cleaned our tresses and made them soft and luxuriously full.  We then added a bit of clear, blue-green Styling Gel $16.00 for control. Our style "held" without feeling weighed down or sticky.  By this time, our frizzies were significantly tamed, but before we ventured out into the humidity,  we added a spritz of Volumizing Hair Spray $18.00 which we smoothed any rough spots. We cheered when we checked in the mirror and spied shiny, bouncy, smooth, and manageable hair that really stands up to summer!   Could that really be our hair?  YES!

When we were contacted by some of our reader about Alterna Enzymatherapy Hair Care, we were curious. We tracked them down (it took a while), and they graciously sent us a few of their luxurious products, which are favored by movie stars, fashionistas, and anyone who wants beautiful hair. The first thing you notice is the distinctive bottles. The Alterna Caviar Shampoo and Caviar Conditioner $19. 25 10.01 oz and Caviar Conditioner $23.00 12 oz feature tall, slim, shapely violet-colored bottles with silvery lettering. Inside, there is caviar, a source of Omega-3 fatty acids, and nutrient-activating enzymes along with something called "Age Control Complex" that helps your hair stay youthful and protected from environmental saboteurs.  Safe for all types of hair, you can read the fine print yourself, but the bottom line is that Alterna makes impressive products. The Caviar line made our hair silky-soft and shiny, as if we had paid a mint to go to a salon. The rich products  moisturize, re-vitalize, and nourish hair against aging and they really do what they claim!. If your hair has been weakened by coloring and you don't want to damage it more, Alterna HEMP SEED Shampoo (see photo) and Conditioner 10.01 oz $17.25 10.01 oz  will cleanse and moisturize without stripping hair. We love the look of the shampoo, in an elegant tower of sheer yellow plastic and the conditioner in a thin, round yellow plastic disk with tall neck that looks like a full moon. Gentle enough to use every day, these products efficiently and effectively cleanse, moisturize and protect chemically-treated hair without over-drying or stripping the color. Our reviewers said that their hair instantly felt softer, stronger, and more  "elastic" to combat breakage. As a finishing touch for dry, fried or damaged hair, spritz Caviar Rapid Repair Spray $23.99 (with patent-pending Age-Control Complex)  to immediately transform hair that looks like straw, into hair that is soft, shiny and healthy-looking. We are used to trying lots of products - it's amazing how well just one spritz made our dull, brittle, hair look -- and you can use it more than once a day to continually reinforce shine and softness. Shampoo, style, dry, spray - you'll look beautiful!

Bobbi Brown Beach Fragrance has been wildly popular since it's introduction in 2002. Fans of this fragrance, rejoice!  Bobbi Brown Beach Leave-In Hair Conditioner with SPF 15 $15.00 is here, and it's great. It's a leave-in conditioning treatment in a tote-able tube, that absorbs easily, and smoothes and moisturizes summer-fried hair as it protects against the sun. Better still, it will scent your hair very lightly with the "Beach" which is perfect for summer - a light combination of driftwood, neroli petals, dune flower, dianthus, sea spray, and jasmine.

It's embarrassing it is to look in a mirror and realize that your shoulders have a "dusting" of well...umm..dandruff.  In the old days, dandruff shampoos that had a prayer of being effective could also smell horrible and dry out your hair.  Times have changed..a lot! Head and Shoulders Dry Scalp Care 2 in 1 $4.49 with pyrithione zinc  gives your treats the flakes but also leaves your hair soft, shiny, and manageable in just one step.   This is particularly great in the summer, when you're "rushing" and don't want to take the extra time to condition.  Dry Scalp Care 2 in 1 formula contains a high level of moisturizing ingredients that gently protect your scalp's natural moisture balance. This shampoo is also pH-balanced and gentle, so you can use it every day, even on color-treated hair. The light scent will ensure that no one knows you've used a treatment shampoo.  Oily hair can have dry scalp, too.  If your flakes are freaking you out, try Head and Shoulders new Soothing Lotion for Dry Scalp $4.29. It's a leave-in lotion that helps moisturize and prevent dandruff, between treatment shampoos. Designed with African Americans in mind (who may have complicated hairstyles that prevent them from washing their hair frequently to avoid hair damage), we think that it's a boon to anyone who doesn't want to wash their hair every day but still wants to keep flakes, at bay.

The new, Nourishing Oasis Shampoos and Conditioners $2.39 each from popular Alberto VO5 smells so nice right out of the bottles that you don't want to use them up fast. Luckily, the generous 14.5 fl. oz bottles will last you a while.  Designed as aromatherapy products as well as effective hair cleansers and conditioners, the scents (there are four different ones) are released and magnified when the products are combined with warm or hot water, making a mundane chore into a true pleasure. We tried "Soothe and Smooth with Honey & Almond." It smelled divine, is safe for color-treated hair, tamed the frizzies, and generally made our hair look and feel just great.

You take care of your hair with a regular shampoo and conditioner routine. One day you look in the mirror and you see dry, damaged, hair.  Now what?  You can wear a hat, or help it to heal itself. If you're got seriously damaged hair, you need a seriously good product to help heal it. Try a deep-conditioner such as Kanebo Intensive Hair Mask $45.00. This product helps to re-hydrate and nourish severely damaged hair with an all-natural, ingredient exclusive to Kanebo, which closely resembles the natural lipids in hair.  Apply the mask to your hair, and it will effectively it's lipid content to a normal, healthy level.  What does that means for you?  Better, stronger, healthier-looking hair.

We were first introduced to remarkable, Neutrogena Shampoo in high-end hotels and cruise ships. We didn't know about  Neutrogena Anti-Residue Formula Shampoo $5.60 6 oz.  but we found that it swiftly removes dulling residue from hair, caused by conditioners and styling products. Used once a week,  your hair will be clearer, shiner, better.  We liked the rich lather and subtle scent. This is safe for all hair types. Now that we know, we'll be adding this to our hair care regimen. You might want to, as well.

Sun can dry out your hair and make it brittle. Before you venture into the sun or go to the pool or beach, make it a habit to spritz dry or wet hair with Jean-Marc Maniatis Paris Sun Defense Hair Mist $14.00 which is like a sunscreen from UV-rays - for your hair! Your hair will be soft, protected, but not "greasy." After a day at the pool or beach, wash your hair with After Sun Repairing Shampoo $9.00 which is enriched with palm oil to thoroughly rid your hair of dirt, sand, and salt, while moisturizing and counter-acting the damaging effects of the sun. That may seem to be a tall order, but you've got a  super-hydrator that leaves hair soft and pampered. A bonus is that the shampoo makes it easy to de-tangle so you're not tugging and causing more breakage.

Sick of flyaway hair? Take action and use Phyto Pro Wet Gel $18.00 with myrrh extract. The gel will shape and control hair with maximum hold, but without getting greasy or too heavy. It also provides a great shine to make your hair look even better.  When you're attempting to do a new style or a formal  up-do, it's best to call in the professionals. Phyto Pro Sculpting Gel #8 $18.00 will hold your hair in place but still make it look natural, for as long as you need it to. The gel also has myrrh extract, which helps add a beautiful luster. Finally, give your hair a "sunbrella" with Phyto Plage Hydrating After Sun Mist $20.00. Yes, it's pricey, but it makes your hair look and feel marvelous while protecting, hydrating, and strengthening it, ..and you can't put a price on that, can you? Spray this clear liquid on your damp or dry hair and you'll see instant, brilliant, light-reflecting shine. It also de-tangles, and provides softness that doesn't make your style go limp. If you want great hair, it's definitely worth it!

Even though the prices are really low,  Apt. 5 has a certain "coolness" factor that can't be denied. This also goes for the new hair care line. For summer, Apt. 5 Moisture Shampoo $5.95 is great for dry, damaged, and heat-styled hair. The  Conditioner $5.95 revitalized our dull, straw-like hair.  We really liked the results - clean, soft, healthy-looking hair that just looked beautiful.  These are simple, good, products at reasonable prices.  Reviewers were also impressed with Apt. 5 Strong Hold Gel $5.95, an eye-catching, plastic tower of golden, glimmering gel containing sunscreen as well as titanium dioxide and iron oxides to reflect light for high-wattage shine, while also providing serious styling control without stiff or sticky residue.

PROTECT YOUR FACE:   If you want to look like Demi Moore or Heather Locklear in your "later years," start now.  Use moisturizer and sunscreen, daily. Today's products work to reduce sun damage, and provide anti-aging and moisturizing benefits.  Your skin is unique, so purchase products that work well with it. Re-apply them, often.  All creams and lotions fade, over time. A man's skin  need serious skin and sun-care, too. Our male reviewers (even first-timers) told us that once they started using skincare products, they realized how much better their skin looked and felt. Now that they know how great their skin can look and feel, they have enthusiastically added new skincare products to their daily grooming routine.

Kanebo Sensai City Day Defense Emulsion $95.00 is a  serious treatment to help prevent premature signs of aging, and it also does double-duty as a light moisturizer (with apricot oil). More importantly,  micro-powder-sol, a water-based solution that disperses micro-particles of titanium dioxide, provides a wide spectrum of UVA and UVB SPF 23,  protection. This lotion absorbs with lightening fast speed and only the faintest scent, so you can apply other products, quickly, and be on your way.  You can use this silky lotion to protect and enhance your arms, shoulders and décolleté, too.

The eyes are the mirror to the soul, so the old saying goes. If yours look tired and the skin underneath them is dry and irritated, wishing won't make change.  If you've never used an eye cream before, or aren't happy with your current one, now is a great time to try Advance Stop Signs Eye SPF 15  $29.50 by Clinique.  It does double-duty, protecting your delicate eye area with zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and an organic sunscreen to guard against UVA/UVB.  It also helps repair existing damage, and improves the appearance of your under-eye area with skin brighteners that virtually erase little lines and make you look more alive and younger, too.  That's a lot to ask from an unscented, pink cream -- bit it delivers.

We have always appreciated the high quality, cutting-edge products of Prescriptives. We reviewed Prescriptives Flight Cream way back in our 2001 Holiday Column.We honestly didn't think we'd ever find a cream for very dry skin that we liked better. Now, perhaps, we have. Prescriptives has introduced Super Flight Cream $35.00, which keeps skin moist, even under the most drying conditions (eg. an airplane). The literature provides all sorts of technical names for ingredients, but the bottom line is that this is a superb, rapidly absorbed, non-greasy cream that stops dehydrated skin cold in it's tracks, while reducing flakes and (dare we say it) even wrinkles.  Another great new product is Flight Mist $20.00, a pick-me-up-in-a-pump-spray for whenever and where-ever you skin feels dry and dehydrated. Prescriptives suggests spritzing this one over the Super Flight Cream to lock in the benefits, but we liked it just as a little treat for our face, throughout the day. However you use it, use it, you will!

For those who prefer a two-in-one product, the Hydra-Balance Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 6  $35.50 by Clarins is a   foundation/moisturizer that protects, minimizes fine lines, and provides a reasonably opaque, natural-looking, glowing color. Among it's good-for-your-skin ingredients that calm, moisturize, and regenerate are Echinacea, mallow, and sea fennel. That's a lot, in a little tube. This is a great product for busy women who want to beautify, protect, and preserve, quickly and easily. Hydration-Plus Moisture Lotion $41.50 by Clarins is a fast absorbing, light moisturizer with SPF 15 that feels great on your skin.  It's built for hydration and has numerous ingredients that help trap and retain water - essential for your skin. It's more than just a multi-purpose sun screen and facial moisturizer, however.  Use it in your eye contour area, and as a mask (leave it on for 5-10 minutes, remove with toner, and you're good to go).  Since it's in a tote-able, plastic tube and performs so many serious skincare functions,   this is a product you'll want to use for travel, as well as at home. We also loved Clarins Stick Solaire Ultra Protection SPF 30 $22.00 that lends a higher SPF to nose, lips, ears and other sun-sensitive areas. The chubby lipstick-style case that swivels open at the top and cleverly has a loop and peach-colored cord.  For summer, we added our to our key chain. It's always ready to apply whenever we felt the need. 

To protect your face this summer without breakouts, we suggest using sun screens that are formulated just for your face.  One to try is Orange Peel  Moisturizing Face Block SPF 15 $14.00 by Bath & Body Works, which contains natural orange peel, green tea, and calendula extracts that, combined with SPF-UV protection, will shield your face from the sun's harmful rays, while moisturizing and protecting against aging, too. This product looks peachy in the tube, but blends on all skin types. We liked it's fast, non-greasy feel.  We know it's for faces, but when we smoothed a bit on our hands, they looked and felt better (and were protected), too.  For sun-sensitive areas such as your lips, eyes, and ears, Orange Peel Moisturizing Eye & Lip Block SPF 15 $15.00 is a chubby sun screen stick that is formulated with staying power to protect those area, too.

We love tinted moisturizers. They're perfect either under your regular foundation, or alone, for a natural look wherever you go. The Tinted Moisturizer by Laura Mercier $38.00 is one of the best. It's sheer, adds just a hint of color that makes skin look better than bare (but not "made up") and it has a generous 20 SPF to protect against UVA and UVB rays. The palefaces tried "Porcelain" which is very light, but there are five shades in total to suit most everyone.  The product smoothes on easily, even on dry skin, and doesn't feel greasy. It also didn't' turn orange on our skin when we heated up. Try it and you'll be a fan, too!

Sue Devitt Studio by celebrity makeup artist Sue Devitt (who works with the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Christina Ricci, Julia Stiles, Liv Tyler, and Hilary Duff), is one of our faves. Her 70% Triple Seaweed Gel Foundation $38.00 slides on like a luxe, oil-free, yet silky, dream, leaving your skin looking smoother while it moisturizes and nourishes. The pump bottle keeps fingers clean, and dispenses semi-sheer liquid foundation, loaded with good-for-you vitamins and SPF 10 that even those with sensitive skin, can use.  It's a great product that helps your skin to look better and stay younger, longer. We also loved  Sue Devitt Studio Silky Blush $20.00 that gives every complexion color sexy color and a subtle, appealing glow. You'll get a believable, flattering blush that lasts and won't turn orange in the heat.Our hands-down favorite was "Koh Samui" which melds pink brown, and a hint of plum into a slightly shimmery rose/tan that is hard to describe, but added an amazing and credible blush to every tone of skin.  "Los Angeles" is a flattering tangerine/apricot .  "East Hampton," is a sheer, girly, matte pink to flatter a tan or add drama to a very pale complexion.

Laura Geller Make Up Bronze – N- Brighten $35.00 is an oil-free corrector and bronzer in one. Pop open this mirrored compact and you’ll see a raised mosaic dome of pinks, whites and browns, designed to create a subtle sun-kissed glow. . This bronzer gave us the healthy glow of a tan, without the potential of wrinkles. We liked the fact that we could use very little of the product and still achieve an “in the pink” summer look in seconds.

We're reviewing Virgin Cosmetics in this column for the first time.  Entrepreneur extraordinare Richard Branson's is more than just air travel (as if you didn't know). Virgin Cosmetics is Britain's answer to Avon, BeautiControl, and Mary Kay, offering more than 500 high quality, modestly priced products through a glossy, attractive catalogue. The sales are accomplished through outside sales consultants and  23 retail shops throughout the United Kingdom. If you aren't planning a visit to  the U.K. any time soon, stay tuned...we are hoping that Virgin Cosmetics will soon find their way to U.S. shores. Meanwhile, find a friend overseas, and get these awesomely-great products shipped to you!  Our picks for summer include Virgin Vie Outdoor Wear Moisturizer with SPF 15 16.50 GBP or approx. $29.19 USD, a lightly scented cream that soothes, smoothes and really protects. Virgin Vie Perfect Balance Foundation SPF 25 14 GBP or approx. $24.77 USD in four shades (light to medium), neatly dispensed in a handy,  pump container. We liked the demi-matt finish and the way it smoothed on quickly, evenly and dried lightening fast. Ditto Virgin Vie Outdoor Wear Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15 10.00 GBP or approx. $17.70 USD in four colors (light to medium) that evens out skin tone and adds a bit more color than some of the tinted moisturizers we've tried. We loved the portable tube and fast drying product that made our face look better than bare, but not sticky or oily. Bravo, Virgin!

Sonia Kashuk Hydro-Tint SPF 15 $11.99 gives your face sheer color, while moisturizing, and protecting from the sun's harmful rays. It's just another good reason why you should take the time to apply a beautifying face product, every day!  It's very rich - particularly great for dry and/or mature skin. The shades will suit most except the deepest complexions. It's more than a tint, less than a foundation. ..just what we were looking for. If you want more coverage, Sonia Kashuk Perfecting Liquid Foundation comes in a wide variety of shades and gives your face a nice matte look, while still managing to be lightweight. We loved the way it evened out our skin tone and gave us a healthy, happy look.  No one wants to look like a ghost when summer rolls around. For a shot of color, try Sonia Kashuk Cheek Sheers.   We tried "Sunkissed"  for a coppery glow. "Beach Bum" gives you a sweet, feminine pink flush; "Sundrenched" is a must-have for a rosy cheeks; and for a fresh, peachy tint you can't miss with" Summer Girl." Reviewers also fell in love with Sonia Kashuk Cleanser's light, lemon fragrance and the way it gently removes dead skin cells, rejuvenates your skin and makes you feel "glowy." Tiny beads that scrub away leftover makeup and dead skin cells. It can be used up to three times a week to keep your skin clean and clear. Very important when you’re running around, in the hot sun.

We really love mineral products for their all natural   composition. New to our review this column is Emani Professional Cosmetics. Established in 1998,  Emani products are made from pure, crushed minerals, are environmentally conscious, ethically produced, and are free from harmful chemicals and animal testing. Emani crushed minerals contain   titanium oxide which provides broad-spectrum UVB and UVA protection.  Even people with very sensitive skin can use these products. We tried the Emani crushed minerals foundation $19.00  which comes in seven colors from light to bronze. It dusted on with a semi-matte finish with just a hint of glow, and gave our skin a finished look. You can even use these as an under eye concealer (use a tone lighter than your foundation shade). You don't need a lot and they'll last a long time. We hope to review more Emani products in future columns.

M·A·C Cosmetics are always coming up with new, innovative products.  We have rarely reviewed a foundation by this amazing company, however.  This column, we're delighted to review M·A·C Select SPF Foundation $22.00 This non-greasy,  water-based liquid foundation comes in an astounding, 21 shades (we tried "NC 30," a warm, light-to-medium, beige). Reviewers loved the  medium coverage that covers with a matte finish, without making your face look too "done."  If you are seeking a beautiful, high-quality, foundation that lasts and protects your skin with SPF 15 all day long, you've just found it!

New to our column is Sasha Cosmetics. These yellow-based cosmetics are specifically for women who have yellow-based skin (many Caucasian, and all Asian, Latin and African women). Wendy Fitzwilliam, Official Spokesperson for Sacha Cosmetics, wore this brand when she was  crowned Miss Universe, 1998., but you don't need to be a beauty queen to feel like one. There are a dozen Foundation shades from light to dark,  in four different color groups. Find your shade, and you will also find a list of coordinating products for your "tone."  We tried the foundations. The Cream Foundation $22.00 is very opaque, providing full coverage easily and quickly, but it still stays put without feeling like "greasepaint. The Cream to Powder Foundation $30.00 feels light as air, but also full coverage. Both would be great for covering problem skin or for those times when you want formal makeup.  The Liquid Foundation $20.00 is slightly more sheer which makes it ideal for everyday, but still provides good coverage. Our favorite product is the Loose Face Powder $22.00 which gives a semi-opaque polish to a bare face,  and adds the final chic touch to a full-face foundation. This line has more color cosmetics and skin care, too.  We hope to review more, in the future.

CG Smoothers SPF 15 Tinted Moisture by Cover Girl $6.95 comes in light to medium, or medium to dark. It covers slight imperfections, but it is sheer enough to satisfy even the most "bare is better" fans.The lightweight formula won fans among our reviewers who dubbed it one of their new, favorite, products. It slides on easily, stays put, and if you set it with powder, looks "polished" without being overly "done." It has good-for-your-skin ingredients that even help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. For under $7.00, you really can't go wrong choosing this as your new, summer "face" product.

Fantasy Mint Wash $3.00 from fanciful, fun, BeneFit is full of good-for-your-skin ingredients such as soy, aloe, peppermint, eucalyptus, and chamomile. Squeeze some of this pink cleanser out of the tube, later with water, and wash off. Before you can even think about it, your face feels totally clean and soft. The zingy scent will perk up your morning, get your ready for the evening's activities. Help rid your skin of dirt and makeup with Honey..Snap Out of It Scrub $23.00. This almondy-scented facial scrub has apricot oil, oatmeal, vitamin E and, of course, honey, to gently but thoroughly moisturize and exfoliate. Leave it on for three minutes and it does double-duty as a facial mask - clever, and quick!

Eau Thermale Avènue Tinted Extreme Compact SPF 50 $16.00 gives your skin amazing coverage and a healthy, bronze glow, in one simple step.  The Cool, White compact with orange lettering looks like you just picked it up in Saint Barths. Titanium and zinc oxides as well as anti-oxidants provide an unscented, water-resistant, 100% mineral sunscreen that gives the highest SPF protection we've seen, for not a lot of cash. WOW! It's an easy way to look healthy and stay healthy, all summer (and Fall, Winter and Spring) long! We are impressed. We think you will be, too.

It’s always nice to pamper your skin, and June Jacobs Cucumber Green Tea Toner $32.00 makes it easy.  It’s a soothing toner that works well for sensitive and all skin types. The toner is PH balanced, has anti-oxidants and botanicals like ginseng, rose hip seed, jojoba, grapefruit, neem and other goodies. We loved the way our skin felt, and found it easy and nice to incorporate it into our daily skin care regimen. Our reviewers report that it's a definite winner.

A MAN's skin needs protecting just as much as a woman's does, but until recently, few facial products were readily available exclusively for men. Neutrogena's line of men's facial products are created to suit specific skin types and needs. Two that reviewers loved are Neutrogena Triple Protect Face Gel  $6.99 which sooths and heals irritated skin and helps defend against aging, and Triple Protect Face Lotion SPF20 $6.99. This product packs a powerful protection to save a man's skin from the sun's damaging rays.  The three-in-one approach which soothes, moisturizes, and affords serious protection from the sun,  is perfect for most men, who aren't used to using a lot of different products. Neutrogena is making men true fans of skincare...and we're glad!

When we think of NIVEA, we automatically think of quality skin care at affordable prices. The new line of NIVEA Visage Q10 Plus Products are impressive. They offer "skin friendly" hope to maturing skin and are a boon to the budget-minded. There's nothing better than being able to soothe, moisturize, rejuvenate and protect against the sun's rays with SPF 15,  in one step. Q 10 Plus Wrinkle Control Day Creme SPF 4 $10.99; Q 10 Plus Wrinkle Control Eye Creme SPF $10.99, Q 10 Plus Wrinkle Control Night Crème $10.99; and Q 10 Plus Wrinkle Control Lotion SPF 15 $10.99 do triple-duty as protectors, beautifiers, and anti-age creams. There is also a NIVEA Revitalizing Lotion Q10 for men $8.99 that also has SPF 15, too. These are not "cold cream" wrinkle agents of yesteryear. The modern formulas are light, easily absorbed, and multi-task. For those who don't need wrinkle protection (just yet) there's NIVEA Visage All Around Protection Creme or Lotion SPF 15 $8.99 each . We absolutely adore products like these, which absorb easily without any greasy fee; and are even suitable for sensitive skin. These won't clog pores, so use them to protect and moisturize your skin all year long.  NIVEA also has an entire line of products which are keyed to a man's skin types   (mild, sensitive, and cooling). This is hypoallergenic, won't cause breakouts, and it's   paba-free.  We think it's great beauty "find." If you are seeking a new, summer foundation, Neutrogena Visibly Even Natural-Look Makeup SPF 20 $11.75 is a perfect partner, providing a lightweight, lasting, product in ten shades. We liked the look, and although we didn't test it long enough to report, but the company claims that with regular use (16 weeks) this foundation will reduce blotchy redness while it works to minimize the effects of future skin imperfections due to sun damage, too. 

M·A·C Cosmetics Cream Colour Base $9.50 is a great multi-use product to pop in bag, tote or suitcase. You can layer this sheer cream over foundation, moisturizer, or powder, or just wear it directly on bare skin to give it life, without a formal foundation look. Start with a little to add a glow, add more, if you want all-out punch! Two from the new Salsabelle collection include sexy "Sundrenched," a limited edition yellowed-pink that will perk up pale skin, add a sexy glow to a tan.  "Salsabelle," named for the collection Make a tan even better with a bright sheer coral red limited edition, is a bright, limited edition, sheer coral red that makes a tan even better or adds serious drama to pale skin.

Not ready to commit to a full-blown tan? BonneBell Sunblush Bronzer $4.99 in  "Sun-Kissed Copper" goes on like a foundation, transforming your pale skin into a golden--not orange!--glow. And if you want to go all-natural the next day, the bronzer can be easily washed off.

Bourjois and fashion designer Betsey Johnson have teamed up to create a summer collection (inspired by the designer's house in Mexico)  that's glamorous and sun-worthy. To perk up a protected, summer complexion or punch up the radiance of a self-tanner, add a touch of Bourjois Pastel Teint Doré $17.00 on your cheekbones, nose, forehead and chin. You'll get a wearable, sun-kissed look without the skin damage. "#72 Cuivré" is a peachy (not orange) tone, great for pale to medium complexions. Use the deeper but still believable" #68 Doré" to enhance deeper complexions or a dark tan.

This Spring we reviewed BeneFit Georgia $26.00 a sinfully-perfect peach blush that is lightly scented with the delicious fruit. Breaking with tradition, we're suggesting it again..just because the peach blush with matching peach-handled brush was good for Spring, perfect for summer to flatter a tan or give pale skin the glow of a proper Southern belle. LOVE YOUR LIPS - Lips are a focus in every season, but in summer, harsher environmental factors such as sun, sand and wind make covering lips more than just a vanity.  Many of the products below contain SPF, moisturizers and even anti-age ingredients.  Make sure your lips are covered completely, whether you choose a shimmery. shiny, or tinted gloss, or full coverage lipstick.

We love Laura Mercier's luxe Lip Kisses $19.00 for their chic, sleek, slim, silvery tubes containing eight vanilla-scented, silky, moist, sheer washes of summery color. Most of all we love the SPF 15 protection!  give your lips a touch of the summer sun, ranging from browned-pink "Nude Beach, to bronze-y "Sizzle"  to "Heat Wave," a deep berry. A tip from Laura, herself, is to coat your lips first with Laura Mercier Lip Balm SPF 15 $20.00 and then apply the color wash of your choice. The lip balm is a clear gloss with grapeseed oil, green tea extract, vitamins A, C and E, and other good for you things that moisturize and protect so your lips are better than "au natural." It also has "Maxi Lips," which make your lips immediately look more moist and plump, and, over time, firmer and better defined.

BeneFit LipGloss $14.00 looks like any other wanded gloss, until you try it. You'll soon see that the gloss is light as air, and has the most amazing, sexy, apricot-lychee scent. There are a dozen shades. Our top picks were "Thigh Highs" a sheer, pearly, light pink, and "wink," a shiny, sexy mauve. Unleash the lip lover in you...get one and you'll want to re-apply -- even if you don't have to.

Color and shine go hand in hand in Apt. 5 Lipshine Wands $6.50. A substantial, clear, faceted tube contains super-shiny gloss and opaque color to color lips, without feeling sticky. We tried "LG-07," a bright, clear pink that flattered everyone, pale or tanned. Mauve "LG-09" perked up the palefaces, pronto!

For pale complexions we suggest "4," a pretty beigy-brown,  and #11," an shiny wine that will turn heads.  For deeper complexions we choose    "6," a shimmery, bronze-y brown and "8," a bright, golden orange (tops to flatter a tan). For gloss lovers, there is also Bronze Mania trio of shiny, super-silky gloss in squeeze tubes in universally flattering shades that can be worn alone, over a lipstick, or mixed together for your own, signature color. "Natural Pink #6" is gives you a hint of pearly pink with high shine. "Bronze #7" treats lips to a tint of slightly metallic bronze, and "Rosy-White #8" is an amazing, slightly iridescent pearl that would enhance any lipstick you slicked it over.

We really like Maybelline New York Wet Shine Diamonds Liquid Lip $6.75. Sheer, shiny color is flecked with subtle bits of glitter that go all out and glimmer in the sun, to make your lips look sexy and shiny (with just a hint of color). Perfect to wear alone or pair over one of your favorite lipsticks is "Bring It On Baby."  It looks like cotton candy in the tube, goes on with just a hint of pleasing pink and a subtle, silvery glimmer.  Ditto "Purple #175 Loud and Clear Lilac" that has a very slight mauve color that we particularly liked over last season's mauve and berry lipsticks. Go "better than bare" try the hot, new "Hip Hot Summer," a riot of parti-colored glitter in a clear, shiny base that makes you lips feel festive and soft.

Can a lipstick stop the clock and make your lips look fuller and smoother while protecting them from the sun's rays and providing a 24-hour conditioner... for just $8.00? Yes! Avon Beyond Color Plumping Lipstick With Retinol SPF 15 protects, nourishes and re-texturizes your lips and plumps them up, instantly. We really did see and  feel softer, smoother lips with reduced lip lines. Better still, your lips continue to improve with continued use of the lipstick. We loved the fact that this one comes in twenty pretty colors in Shimmer,Cool, Warm, and Neutral . We tested " Party Pink Rose," a sheery shimmery pink that looks good on just about everyone, and can be worn over another lipstick to make it even better. This product is just a must-have in every woman's purse!

Makeup artist guru Laura Geller's Make-up Studios Sundew Lipgloss $14.00 is an irresistible shimmery bronze. Swipe this on (it comes in a handy wand) and he can't help but notice your way better than natural, glimmering lips. This could become a favorite, summer accessory.

Cover Girl WetSlicks $4.99 give you lots of shine, for just a few dollars.We loved the hi-wattage shine coupled with the soft, soothing feel of a lip balm. There are a dozen+ shades- you just can't go wrong.  One reviewer said she thought the scent reminded her of a rich, cake batter-yum! Our favorites? Try the limited edition, sheer pink "Hot Tropic" or "Shellshine," a soft, sheer, pink with gold shimmer. 

Want to really flatter a tan or make a dramatic statement? Like purple, wine, and burgundy but want to lighten up a bit for summer?   Morgen Schick Pillow Lips in Fig/Sweet Nectar $14.50 has a deep but sheer burgundy lipstick on one end and a very sheer, shiny, purple gloss on the other that has shimmery glimmer and lasts a long time (without feeling like your lips are glued together). 

Our first real "lipstick" was actually a clear, unscented, BonneBell lip gloss. Smackers® Clip 'N Go $1.95 takes us a long way from that plain, old gloss. This sport balm clips on your wrist, shorts (or whatever) with a stretchy sport band. Inside the colorful tube, there's a creamy-soft, nicely scented (not overly sugary) gloss that leaves a slight sheen, so your guy can use it too without feeling too "girly" about it.  Best of all, it has a whopping SPF 24 to protect your lips!  We tried "Slamdunk Strawberry," (there's also "Vanilla Volley). Perfectly wonderful to tote and use anywhere when you want to moisten, protect and beautify your lips. ..and a great value, too. For those who want more shine, Vita Gloss O2 $3.95 gives you what you crave - shiny glosses that moisturize with vitamins A,C, D & E   in six sheer shades and yummy scents. We tried the clear "Raspberry Grapefruit Squeeze." For more color, try BonneBell Lip Lites $3.50. We tried Metallic Mocha,"a silky, moist, chocolate scented, gorgeous glossy nude that our contact at BonneBell said looks great on everyone. She was right!

Tony & Tina's Transformer Lipcare Palette $25.00 called "Earth Harvest" has six, sheer, shiny,  universally-flattering, glosses in shades of red, orange, plum, wine, and pink, packed with loads of good-for-you-lips ingredients. They're housed in a  chic, business-card-sized, silvery, case that contains a dual-ended (and useful) lipbrush. The glosses are slightly scented,silky, moisturizing, indulgent. A great kit for summer, travel, a gift..anyone, anytime.

Clinique Superbalm $10.50 in "Bronze Spice" is like a whisper-sheer bronzer for your lips that also provides deep hydration and a dewy (not super shiny) finish. We love the unscented, silky gloss and also it's plastic tube that is the perfect choice for boat, beach or travel. There's also Mango, Raspberry and Grape.   If your lips feel dry and chapped, or you just want to give them a sexy pick-me-up, tote this one in your purse!

Prestige Jet Stream Lip Gloss $5.95 comes in a sleek, click-it pen with brush that dispenses high shine, fruity-flavored lipshine with sheer color. These are reminiscent of much higher priced products by another one of our favorite companies, This gloss is "tacky" so it sticks, even if you are swimming or doing other physical activities. It comes in many colors, but we tried two names after summer drinks: peachy "Bahama Mamma"  and pink "Fuzzy Navel."

Natalie Bonelli is a multi-talented singer/songwriter and a makeup artist who cleverly named her lovely PersoNatalie Lip Glosses $17.00 after songs on her 2003 CD "Glisten-Listen" (which is quite good, by the way). A portion the proceeds from sales goes to support the Renfrew Center, a facility dedicated to the education, prevention, research and treatment of eating disorders. The glosses are packaged in petite, silvery, slim-line compacts that remind us of another, hip,  young-at-heart line. Inside there's cute mirror and mini-brush accompanying a generous square of shimmery, super-shiny, long-lasting, non-sticky, gloss. There are nine shades, but our three faves are. "Dreams," a flattering, sheer, shimmery melon; "Letting Go"  a opaque, metallic, berry; and "Lucky" a light, girly, pearly pink.

M·A·C Cosmetics Lip Lacquer $16.00 gives you lips color and a shine reminiscent of patent leather, but it's not really a gloss or a lipstick. Rather, it's a long-wearing lip statement! For summer, from the Salsabelle Collection, pale colors make bare lips much more than merely glossy. "Poco Pink" is a medium pink pearl with shimmer that looked nice on everyone. "Tongue in Chic" is a sheer, baby pink iridescent. "Bueno Beige is the light peach version, complete with subtle golden shimmer. Simmering and simply gorgeous! Traditionalists can join the pale trend with limited edition Lipstick $14.00. "Nada," is a vanilla-scented, nearly clear white with a hint of pink that looks startling in the tube, shimmery and pretty on lips. "Rio Babe" is a shimmery, peachy tan that also looked amazing on everyone. Or ditch that dark red lipstick you've been wearing and replace it with "Chica-Boom." The soft, pastel shade is sure to leave you feeling pretty in pink. You can't go  wrong with one of these trendy, fun to wear, colors.With the sun's rays beating down on you, it's easy to develop chapped lips.  MAC Tinted Lip Conditioner $10.50 MAC's Tinted Lip Conditioner provides a stylish, simple solution--offering SPF protection while giving you a non-gooey mouth. "Fuschia Fix" is a sweet pink tint, great for a tan, or to punch up cool, pale lips..  

Purchase a new, sheer, sophisticated,  Color Surge Bare Brilliance Lipstick $13.50 by Clinque and it may be the one you continually reach for in your purse, this summer. We adored  the high-shine, sparkling sheer wash of color that comes in a whopping, 14 shades in tones of nude, red, pink and violet. We tried "Pink Beach" a shimmery rose, with a   Super Shaper $12.50 in deep, "Sheer Rose," for definition around lips without a harsh, unsophisticated "line." Moisturizers such as grape seed oil and shea butter hydrate, condition, and smooth lips, even when you're in the sun. Wear this one alone for a sporty, natural look or apply over another lipstick to give it shine, and a new look.

Neutrogena Lip Boost™ SPF 20 Intense Moisture Lipstick $6.99 combines skin protection, moisturizer, and lip color into one, simple step. These tame dry lips with a much better than bare, silky, lightweight semi-opaque lipstick that contains aloe, glycerin, avocado & apricot kernel oil . Choose from four neutral shades (we tried the pinky-beige "Sheer Natural-04") and you won't want to go, without.

EYE-CATCHING SUMMER EYES:  Whether you're dressing up for work or a special event, eye makeup finishes your look and helps to frame your features. Alas, some of your favorite products may "melt" in the heat and cause eye irritation.  If you're going to be in the heat, test your eye makeup first, and avoid any unwelcome "surprises."We suggest that you choose water-resistant or waterproof products whenever possible, and apply them with a lighter touch.  Look for products that have SPF protection, too. 

Kanebo Eye Color Duo$28.00 in "Clear Blue" will definitely add a marine note to your look.  The clear, light blue shadow reminds us of the sandy bottom of the ocean at water's edge, the dark blue liner/crease shadow is a dead ringer for the deep, North Atlantic. The shadows are silky, true-to-color, and have staying power -- even in the summer heat. Finish the look with Kanebo 38°C Silk Performance Mascara $21.00 in brown or black. This luxe mascara is touted as the world's first thermo-sensitive mascara, meaning that when it comes in contact with water warmer than 38°C (100.4°F) it softens and glides on, like a glove.  It also has crystallizable silk fibron, which helps curl, strengthen, shine, moisturize, and protect your lashes. We really liked the slim,almond-shaped mascara brush, which easily and quickly colored every single lash, making our eyes look incredible in just one stroke.

New to our review this column,  Rimmel Play it Cool Touch Shadow $3.97 in "Chill It" is a shimmery seafoam green that we all tried, loved, and wanted to wear. The cutting edge product that comes in ten pretty colors, glides onto lids smoothly and grabs hold to stay true to color, crease free, and long lasting even in the sizzling summer heat. We added a coat of Rimmel Endless Length & Lift Mascara $3.97 in rich, dark "Jet Black" to add a waterproof, finishing touch.

Tony & Tina's colors get prettier every season!  Available soon (August/September) is the Color Frequency Eye Shadow Quads $32.00. Bold, intense shadows add life to eyelids. There are four combos, but we tried "Source Energy" with it's an eye- catching green with hint of glitter, a soft, shimmery, silver-grey, a stark, white matte, and a startlingly-pretty black with green glitter.   These are so versatile for lid and liners. You can use them wet or dry, mix and layer, or wear them solo. The silky shadows go on smoothly, stay true, last a long time, and contain Roman chamomile (to de-puff tired eyes), and Vitamins A, E and C (to protect, preserve and rejuvenate). "Kohl" literally means "to brighten the eyes."   To brighten yours, a limited edition kit called Internal Wisdom $28.00 brings you six sexy, smoldering.mini Herbal Char'Kohls: Radiant (magenta), Youthful (turquoise), Voice (baby blue-reviewer's favorite), Trust (pale yellow), Progression (black), Strength (sky blue) - and a mini Herbal Eye Mascara in black, plus a travel-sized mascara - all in a signature, silvery, compact. Use as a liner or smudged as a shadow. Great for travel, too!

Neutrogena Soothing EyeTints $8.99 is more than another shadow cream, it's a multi-purpose wonder. It applies from a little jar, leaving a tingly "cool" feeling that lasts, depending upon your body chemistry, for up to an hour.  It also soothes, and brightens eyes, and reduces puffiness. Applied to bare lids, it leaves a subtle sheen, but it does double-duty as a base, under your favorite shadows, to protect against fading and creasing. There are two shades (we hope they introduce more). We tried the slightly pink "Petal Shimmer-02" (there's also "Honey Shimmer," see photo).  We love this one!

Apt. 5 Eyeshadow Duos $4.00 offer a wide variety of color choices, for not a lot of cash. Our pick for  summer is "SD-14," a tempting sheer pink and a  stark white. Both can be used as lid colors, or highlighters, or mix them together to create your own, signature tone.   Great for travel if you can't be weighted down with too many color choices.

Clinique Touch Tint for Eyes $14.50 gives lids a sheer wash of color on the eye that is nearly bare, but not quite, so you can wear it with casual clothes and not look too "made up."  We liked the ease of application from a tube, which makes is perfect for a weekend away. We liked the limited edition "Citrus Fizz" for summer - it's a golden peachy tangerine that looks festive and summery, tan, or not.   In a pinch, you can use these as a base, too.

If you want to have fun applying your eye makeup in a quick-as-a-wink, sweep, try Maybelline New York Roller Color $6.50.  A rollerball at the tip dispenses sheer, glimmery colors in rainbow shades that lets you easily apply color...and go!  Since they're self-contained and don't need an applicator, they're the perfect travel or purse pal, too. Our favorite for all complexions is the new for summer "Blue Surf," a sheer, turquoise that reminds us of a glimmering sea.  We also like the white-iridescent "Give it a Whirl Pearl," and the browned-pink "Cast on Pink." If you're more adventurous, "Bright on Orange" and deep blue "Skate Til Midnight" would be fun, too.

M·A·C makes great powder Eye Shadow $16.00. We have reviewed a number of them throughout the years, but we never tire of their trendy, remarkable colors that allow you to express yourself, no matter what your personality or age.  For summer, M·A·C sent us two limited edition colors:  "Guacamole," a medium-deep green that looks particularly great on brunettes, and "Casa Blanca," a limited edition yellow that is so pale it almost looks ivory. We liked it for a lid color, a highlighter, and even applied wet, as a modern take on eye liner (it looks particularly great with the green shadow). Experiment. Don't worry - the colors are so pretty you can't really go wrong no matter how you apply them.

We were eager to try Emani Convertible Colors $8.50 per color - 22 shades of eye shadow that you select in a sleek, silvery, 3pc or 8pc kit. Healthy-sized rounds of pressed powder color can be used wet, or dry. We tried a light ivory, a soft brown, and an apricotty-beige. All applied smoothly, stayed true to color and didn't upset even the most sensitive eyes.  Once you try a mineral makeup, you'll realize why more and more women are choosing to add them to their makeup tables. Emani is definitely a mineral makeup line you will want to try.

FRAGRANCES FOR WOMEN AND MEN:- When you are active or in the sun, your body temperature rises and your skin chemistry, changes.  Heat and sweat can "sour" the fragrance you love when it's cooler, and some may irritate your skin, too.  We suggest giving your heavier, colder-month favorites a vacation in the refrigerator, and indulge in a lighter, fresher, easier-on-the-skin fragrances for right now. To find your best "fit" for summer fragrance, "test drive" it for a few hours, first.  Once you are certain that it reacts well to your unique, body chemistry, go back and purchase it.

Clarins Eau Tranquility 3.04 Fl. oz $43.50 epitomizes a summer fragrance.Spritz on the deep turquoise-colored scent, and the mix of aromatic plant extracts and essential oils will give you an immediate sense of well being and a tranquil feeling. This is aromatherapy at it's best.  Let it sit a minute, and enjoy the light, clean, scent that has a hint of floral (but it's definitely not "girly"). Several men who sniffed this one proclaimed it "unisex" and sprayed in on themselves. There are lots of good-for-mind.body/spirit ingredients, but the basic notes are Florentine Iris (to soothe), Provencal Basil (to revive and refresh) and Cedar Wood (restores balance). This is a fragrance that translates differently to your own, unique body chemistry, so it can be your signature and be original, every time you wear it.

Perfect for July 4th is Lady Caron by Caron. When Ernest Daltoff, founder and "nose" of the House of Caron fled Nazi aggression in Europe in 1939 and sailed past the famous Statue of Liberty to safety in New York, he resolved to create a fragrance to commemorate that moment. In 1998, Mr. Daltoff's vision was realized. The bottle is a curvaceous circle, embossed with the head and shoulders of the Statue of Liberty, topped with a lucite "spire." The amber-colored fragrance is long lasting and remarkable. Top notes of Magnolia, Absolute Jasmine and Neroli mix with middle notes of rose, raspberry and peach and bottom notes of oak moss and sandalwood. The result is a fragrance that is complex, sensual, and substantial. This is not a "sport" fragrance but it can stand up to summer heat. Make this one your signature, and you'll love it every day, all year.

So many people told us how much they love the sexy, unique scent of Bobbi Brown "Beach" (that really does make you feel like you're having "fun in the sun") that we were delighted to learn that there are more products with this same, sensational, scent. Bobbie Brown Beach Sunscreen Spray SPF15 $15.00 6.7 fl. oz is another new and nifty way to wear this coveted fragrance, while protecting your skin from the sun's damaging rays. Reviewers loved the chic-looking, simple, plastic pump bottle and the non-greasy, "Beach" scented sunscreen with good-for-your-skin vitamins, that absorbed quickly and left just a hint of scent to enjoy . There's also a limited edition, "Beach" scented, square soap called Sand Bar $15.00. It actually contains sand,  to gently exfoliate skin as it cleanses, leaving skin lightly scented, soft, clean and smooth.  These products are an affordable indulgence for you, and a great gift for a weekend hostess.

Creative Scentualization Perfumers Summer Palette $33.00 spray 1 fl. Oz particularly interested us because it's a line of 33 single note fragrances (that are presented in sweet, color-coded, sheer bags) that can be worn alone or layered together. We tried a classic - a musk base note called "Clean Musk."Our verdict? The scent was clean, light, perfect for summer (and we think a lot of men would like it for themselves, too). This scent is pretty, alone and, if you are daring, mix it with other single-note scents to make one that is uniquely your own.  If you don't want  to wear a scent that's too overpowering, go with the passionate "Tropical Fruit" scent, for something a bit more romantic, go with "Gardenia,"  and get a touch of 1940s retro glamour.

Celine Dion is striking songbird with a voice that makes even grown men, weep. The first fragrance named for her Celine Dion Eau de Toilette Spray 1.7 fl. oz $32.00 by the famous fragrance house of   Coty is delicate yet sensual. As with her song, this fragrance is also a personal expression of florals, musk and woods --  Nectarine, Peony, Waterlily, Mimosa, Tahitian Gardenia, Cucumber Flower, Amazon Orchid, Heliotrope, White Musk, Guaiacwood, Australian Sandalwood, and Vetiver.

Rimmel London is new to this review, but certainly not new to us. We discovered this chic line of makeup way back in the swinging London of the 70's. London Cool $12.87 1 fl.oz took us back to those days, with a feeling (and a price) that is nothing short of "retro-mod."  A cube of turquoise colored acetate envelopes a clear, circular, glass container housing a marine-turquoise colored fragrance that looks as tranquil and refreshing as a glacier. The fragrance is subtle, fresh, light, slightly fruity.  It's not only a perfect choice for summer, but won't break your budget, either

Sonia Kashuk's fragrances are surprisingly good for budget-minded products and a great find for all seasons. We like the simple, "no-frills," rectangular, clear bottles  For summer, a good way to lighten up is with Sonia Kashuk's Fragrance Mist $9.99, 8 oz)  or Eau de Toilette Spray $9.99 1.07 fl. oz.  We tried " No. 4 Bergamot, Waterlotus and Qunice," and we loved the feminine, fruity scent of bergamot peel with citrus, herbal, mossy, musky and floral influences and what We realized was a touch of white tea. We also loved the slightly spicy, bitter grapefruit scent of "No. 2 Yuzu Ginger and Tuberose,"  For those who prefer florals, "No. 1 Gardenia,"    is feminine and romantic. It isn't heavy or overly sweet, with a hint of green citrus blended with gardenia and rose, and  bottom notes of sandalwood and musk   "No. 2 Tuberose," is a modern, fruity-floral with a heart of tuberose. "No.3  Freesia,"  is a light scent with a freesia core, and notes of white linen, fresh green,  watermelon and juniper berry.  All the fragrances are very light, so you can spritz with wild abandon and still not overwhelm.

Even if the men in your life aren't fragrance-savvy, they will know that you think they're something special when you present a superb, designer treat to them. This scent, popular in Europe, has a sturdy, shiny, dark grey box holds a stunning, sleek, matte, grey tower with soft-touch spray top containing Eau de Toilette Spry 3.04 fl. oz, and a  2.06 oz deodorant stick scented with this dressy,  sophisticated, woodsy-spicy-citrus blend. It's sexy and masculine. It works for every day and special occasions. We think this would be a perfect fragrance to give your groom to enhance a wedding day tux, too. This is a modern classic!

RPM Eau de Cologne $17.50 2.5 oz by Avon (a promotional partner of the Indy Racing League) will set your special man's heart racing..even if he isn't a race car lover. Top notes of citrus mix with middle notes of  white cardamom and cool pepper to create a fresh, crisp scent that works well on virtually every man.

LITTLE HELPERS:  Little things can make a big difference in your well-being and image, especially in the summer when you're likely to be more active and want to spend less time dealing with beauty problems.   Some of the following products are clever in their design, others , have formulas that can make a world of difference to your summer beauty routine. For another quick fix, try Clinique Self-Sun Body Quick Bronze Tinted Self-Tanner Mousse $16.50 that takes you from pale to golden in under an hour. If you like self-tanners, this fragrance-free, tinted mousse,  is a cinch to use, and produces the perfect bronze shade. For face, City Block Sheer Shimmer SPF 15 $15.50 in "bronze" will give your face an Oscar-worthy "glam look," without having to spend a week in San Tropez (or damage your skin). Best for those with medium to deep complexions, but quite dramatic on palefaces, too.

Tired of frizzy, out of control tresses when what you want is board-straight perfection?   This summer, consider ditching the flat iron and trying the new, EasyStraight Hair Straightening System $29.99. They are fun and festive for special summer events (eg. weddings) too. Make Summer a time to feel free and express yourself. These products are loads of fun.  No summer beauty "wardrobe" should be without a couple!

Super-shimmery loose powders in 10, iridescent shades can be used dry (for an overall dusting of shimmer) or wet, for seriously emphasis. Medium-pink "Powder Puff" looks lovely on cheeks, shoulder, hair. Stunning, silvery 'Miss Moon" makes a superb evening eye shadow (or mix a bit with lipgloss or moisturizer for a shimmery effect). Another favorite is 'Mint Julep" which takes green shadow to another, much more glam, level. These are cute, reasonably-priced, and think of the possibilities!

We reviewed Scarlett Cosmetics Casino Collection in our 2003 Holiday Column but it makes such a nifty gift for a weekend hostess or a bridal or baby shower (or just for yourself - why not?) and the colors are so perfect for summer, that we've decided to   re-review.  A set of lipstick and highlighter arrive in a clear plastic envelope filled with "money."  Inside, there's a browned-pink lipstick $21.00 called "Lucky" with a cap of stacked, red dice to warm pale lips and flatter tans with a nearly nude look.  There is also a golden glimmed, shimmery pink pressed powder facial highlighter $21.00 called "Chroma" that adds a subtle glow when your skin hasn't seen the sun for a while, or to flatter a tan, and it is cleverly nestled into a faux poker chip!  It's a sure bet that this set is a real winner (pun, intended)

Virgin Cosmetics has quickly won our hearts over completely.  For summer we loved the In the Sunlight Couture Colour Collection 15.00 GBP or approx. $26.54 USD which we quickly nicknamed "four to adore." Four mate and metallic eye shadows arrive in a sleek, bronze-colored case with nice mirror and dual-ended eye/lip brush. The shadow colors are sumptuous, sunny earth tones to warm lids, while shiny pink, red, beige and bronze lip glosses are mixable and matchable alone or with other lip products. We also loved the new, In The Pink Couture Colour Collection 15.00 GBP or approx. $26.54 USD in an equally attractive pink compact containing the most feminine shades we've seen in a long time.   Two cheek colors are sheer, poppy pink and frosty beige (they look super, together), two silky lip glosses in pink and apricot, and four pearly, girly shadows for eyes (grey,gold, silvery-white, and pink).

If you can't choose just a few Caboodles Nailpaint Nail Colors $2.99, all then of  them will still cost you less than $30.00! Shiny, brilliant, long-lasting polish is yours for pennies per coat. We tried two sherbet-colored shades - "Double Date" is a slightly pearly, very wearable, soft melon which we think would look fabulous peeking out from strappy sandals. "Just Cuz" is a pretty,  slightly pearly, cotton-candy pink. Both would look great on pale skin if you're avoiding the sun, or super-bronze, (hopefully accomplished with an artificial tanner.

Pale nails are particularly good when you're busy and don't have time to bother with chips and nicks. Bourjois brings us Very Vernis Nail Polish $9.00 in two sheer, shiny, long lasting shades that flatter virtually everyone ." Very Vernis Champagne Irisé " is a luxurious, shimmery, golden beige (think special occasions like weddings as well as everyday) and "Very Vernis Beige Paris,",a nearly-there wash of shiny, beige color (great for a French Manicure, too). 

What can just $1.97 buy? High tech nails! The folks who developed lycra (yes, the stuff stretchy clothes are made of) produced a special grade of lycra for Rimmel Lasting Finish Lycra Wear Polish to produce a product that not only looks good, but is flexible enough to last for days without chipping and cracking (ours did, and stayed shiny, too). There are already an astounding 31 shades, including nine new ones for summer.  "Tequila Sunrise" is a bold, shiny, coral that definitely flatters a tan, and would make a great special event color for toes, too.

We love faux nails, especially in the summertime when we're too busy to waste time waiting in salons, or for our polish to dry. Revlon NailStay Maximum Wear Glue-On Nails $7.99 are a more sporty, shorter length and stay true for up to two weeks.  If you have trouble applying dark colors that need to be very precise, your pick will be "Runaway Ruby,"  standout, true red nails that look perfect the minute you apply them.

"BLING!" for your fingers and toes is how reviewers described Maybelline New York Wet Shine Diamonds Nailcolor $4.12.   "Tangy Tangerine" is perfect for summer pale or tan. It's a sheer wash of color infused with flecks of golden glitter that look sparkly, and even more so when hit by the light of the sun. Light up your life with "Punched Up Pink" containing bits of silvery glitter and one of the sexiest hot pinks on the planet. Go ahead, light up your life..but hurry - these colors are available for a limited time.  No time for a proper manicure? Express Finish Nail Color $4.12 goes on quickly, smoothly, and dries to a high shine before you can finish your iced latte. There are so many colors to choose from, but our choices are "Tangy Tangerine," a true tangerine with a slightly pearly finish, and deep, bold, metallic "Purple Punk" which would definitely dramatize a tan. If your nails are weak ForeverStrong + Iron $4.12 will give them support, while making them look beautiful. Slightly glimmer, deep bronze "Cocoa Power" is our top choice for beauty, even if your nails as already strong. 

This year we're choosing either subtle, nearly nude nail polish colors, or going bold with bright pinks, purples and oranges. As a no color look, or the base for a French manicure, long wearing Apt. 5 Nailpolish $4.50 in sheer, light as air pink "N-32" is a great choice.  We also like the feminine, opaque white-beige "N-03" which looks startlingly sexy on tanned toes. These polishes come in a wide variety of great color, apply smoothly, dry fast, and are a great value, too.

Nailene Nutri Strength™ and Nutri Hard™ $4.99 are great products that help your nails make it through an active summer. Not to be shallow, but the first thing we noticed weren't  the ingredients that help boost the hardness and strength of your nails -- instead, we were drawn to the clear tops of the bottles containing beads of grey, gold & pearl or faceted clear crystal with purple,green or black middles. Inside these pretty bottles are serious products that work fast, and well. Nutri Strength instantly fortifies weak nails against breaks and splits with biotin, calcium and titanium Crystal Hard  features zinc, keratin and iron to pump up the resistance of thin, weak nails.

Sonia Kashuk Nail Polish $3.49 has   of-the-moment colors that rival some pricier brands. he polish is chip resistant and long lasting.  For summer, we like a quartet of pinks (in various finishes), that will make fingers and toes picture-perfect.  For a nearly-nude look, "Clean Machine" goes on shiny and smooth, leaving just a suggestion of pinkish-ivory behind. "Pink Tutu: is a super light, girly pink blush with just a bit more color, but nothing too bold. "Sugar Cube" gives you a lovely tint of iridescent pink. "Lotus Lover" gives nails more coverage and a deep rose, shine. For a real red we suggest "Ruby Red." Purple lover will like "Passionate Plum," a pretty, mauve-ish shade with a hint of shimmer. Love lilac? Swipe your toes with adorable "Violet Rush." Your toes will thank you

Summertime is all about cute shoes and feeling flirty all over. After being hidden all winter, your feet may need extra help in looking their best. We tried LATHER's Eucalyptus Foaming Foot Scrub With Pumice $18.00 and realized that there is a "higher power!" The product is amazing. We followed the directions and in just minutes, our feet looked summer fresh and ready for the barest of sandals. Built-up calluses and rough spots were gently eased away by the rough pumice scrub. The scrub has a nice light fragrance-nothing medicine-y or heavy. We really couldn’t believe the difference --even in just one use. It’s a foot's best friend.

Apt. 5 has a spa-inspired bath line (who knew?) that allows the budget-minded to enjoy spa-like tranquility, at home.  There is a moisturizer, bath & shower gel, and fragrance mist.  We tried the Bath & Shower Gel $7.99 in the "Forest Zen" fragrance. The cool, refreshing, green liquid in a plastic pump bottle made us feel as though we had entered a fragrant pine forest, and our skin was quickly cleansed. We felt very pampered, for pennies! Men would like this fragrance, too.

Caswell-Massey 23% Shea Butter Soap $7.00 4.5 oz bar is not only a high quality product, but one you can enjoy as a little indulgence, all year.  The generously-sized bar has a high concentration of rich oils and creamy lather to  make sun-stressed or dry, itchy skin feel better and look better, instantly. The soap is available in three scents but we tried Calming Lavender, which smelled richly of the coveted and calming herb, and felt particularly right after a long day at the office, a big night out, or coming back from the beach.

We flipped when we saw the Aromatherapy Candles Travel Set  $18.00 by LATHER. A large silvery tin holds six 1 oz mini-candle tins, two of each generously scented in peppermint, clove, or lavender. They're made with pure essential oils in a soy based wax that burns for approximately five hours, each.  Just Adorable! This is the perfect gift for a hostess, a bride-to-be, or just for yourself. They're too cute to wait for travel. Buy a bunch and make your boudoir, magical, tonight! LATHER Almond Shave Cream  $19.00 smells good enough to eat --  but don't -- it's  for shaving, only.  A generously-sized 5.25 Oz. jar of almond-scented, non-foaming cream goes a long way. Reviewers raved about the way it offered a close shave, and left skin feeling moist and pampered.  We think it's a great gift (coupled with a luxe razor) for Father's Day, but once a woman tries it, she'll want her own jar (better buy several) . 

The LUSH Bridal Bouquet Bath Bomb $4.65 is the "must-have" accessory of the season for a bride-to-be, for a his/his shower, or for the women in a wedding party. A floral scented heart is bursting with parti-colored "confetti" and contains sweet orange and lime oils to banish tension and stress. Give one to a jittery bride and get one to de-stress yourself. You don't necessarily have to hear wedding bells to have one on hand for the next time a romantic spa night is necessary!

Neutrogena Body Clear Wash $5.99 8.5 oz is heaven-sent for anyone who experiences breakouts on chest, back or shoulders. Even if you're not usually prone to body acne, it tends to be more common in the hot, summer months when you're using more lotions. This clear, subtly-scented, orange liquid cleanses gently and thoroughly, and contains aslicylic acid to treat body acne, without turning your skin into a desert. It's a treatment for your body while you wash. Quick, effective, inexpensive, indispensable!

Good, clean, fun takes on an entirely different meaning. Fan the flames of romance (or just impress a summer love)  just by opening a sexy, musky-scented, soap! This tempting trio of bath soaps also makes a reasonably priced bridal shower gift, too.

Maxwell's Apothecary Smooth Shave $17.00 is another reason to be glad you're a "Dad," this father's day.  Our male reviewers loved the scent and the way it made their skin feel soft, while allowing them to shave close,  fast and comfortably. They also liked the refreshing sage, spearmint and rosemary. Maybe your special man thinks he's not worth a high-end shaving product (he is, of course) so this is a luxury that any man will appreciate. Ladies, you'll want to borrow this one, too.

Archipelago Botanicals Monogram Candle Collection $25.00 looks elegant on public display, and makes an impressive gift and comes in 24 fine fragrances. Even before you get it out of the keepsake box (a cream-colored cardboard square topped with a pretty, "crystal" knob) you know it's special. Inside, a gracefully fluted column of clear class holds a strongly scented ivory candle with a simple letter on the front. The letter itself give a hint of the essential oil used  (24 in all). Burning time is approximately 60 hours. Our ("V" for vanilla and freesia) smelled intoxicating right out of the box. We also loved the Signature Series Soy Wax Candle $20.00 5.25 oz in   "Bergamot Tobacco" that comes in a natural, cardboard box decorated with a metal, signature medallion (also rapped in a band around the candle) that looks like an ancient coin. There are dozens of scents and styles to choose from. With 50% natural soy that burns longer and cleaner than regular paraffin or beeswax, the strong, spicy scent in our candle seemed just right for a sultry, summer evening rendezvous.

The men in our lives loved J/A/SÖ/N  6-in-1 Beard and Skin Therapy Shaving Lotion with Jojoba Beads $6.60 They looked a bit blank when we explained that it's loaded with aloe vera gel (for a close, friction-free shave). and that massaging jojoba beads gently lift the hair shaft and exfoliate, for smooth, soft skin.  They didn't' realize that it is PH balanced and soap and propellant-free. What they did learn,   is how much they liked the handy pump bottle, the light, citrussy-scent, and the way this product felt during and after shaving. Now, they're hooked!

Sharps Barber and Shop Kid Glove Shave Gel $8.00 5 fl oz will make with its tingly menthol scent. Leave it on your skin for 30 seconds (that’s when the moisturizers go to work) before shaving and enjoy a nice "tingle."  Our reviewers found it easier to shave around their sideburns because this is a clear gel that doesn’t lather up. Razors glide easily for a closer shave as well as a moisturizing treatment from olive oil extract, rosemary, aloe and grape extract. Sharps Barber and Shop Kid Glove Hydrating Gel  $18.00 5 fl oz. contains goodies like Arnica Montana Flower, Gotu Kola, Wheat gluten, aloe and glycerin. We liked the non-greasy feel, and the way it healed and soothed our skin after shaving. You won’t notice it on your skin, but your face will feel the difference.

Their sophisticated, new line featuring eight unique scents,  is called "YC"   We tried the olive-green colored YC Candle $4.99 1,02 oz or $12.99 6.1 oz. in "Fig & Olive,"a surprising, refreshing melange of jasmine petals, hyacinth, spearmint, citrus and fresh green fig leaves. This candle burned slowly, scented our room quickly, and left us with a luxe feeling. We also tried the YC Fragranced Stone Potpourri $14.99 10 oz jar. We liked the clean lines of the clear glass tumbler, and the softly-scented, rose-colored "stones" that contain the fragrance. We tried  "Redwood Cedar," a pleasing, subtle mix or wood with fruity touches such as Red Raspberry and Anjou Pear, and vibrant maple leaf accents. This would be a great hostess gift, a perfect touch in the guest powder room, too.

DEODORANTS - DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT ONE:   This is a new category for us.  We realize that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but being well groomed and looking great also includes personal hygiene. Humans sweat (as do all mammals) to eliminate waste products from our bodies through the pores in our skin. Sweating is means of temperature regulation, too. Evaporation of sweat from the skin surface has a cooling effect. In Western society, however, the smell of heavy sweat isn't considered very desirable, and wetness on clothes, even less so.  Here are some products that will work to keep you fresh and dry, even when the mercury rises. Find the one that suits your needs, your budget, and your personality.

Tranquility Deodorant Spray $19.00 by Clarins has a hint of Eau Tranquility fragrance, and a deep-turquoise color, making it an attractive addition to your bathroom or dressing area as well as a really nice way to handle odor. We tried it on sticky, urban streets, a dance class, and when we were really nervous.  It really does help to regulate perspiration and keep you dry, while still being gentle on your skin. The fragrance is for women, but frankly, we think some men would enjoy using this one, too.

Weleda Deodorant Spray $8.50 is natural, easy to use, dries immediately, and comes in a variety of scents We tried "Sage." This " deodorant with sage oil, lemon juice and plant extracts,   felt cool on our skin, and smelled deliciously fresh ("like newly-mowed grass" one reviewer said) and will appeal to men, too. There's also a lovely, wild rose fragrance.   Not a lightweight at all - just a few spritzes of this colorless, all-natural liquid kept odors at bay, all day (and night, too). This isn't an anti-perspirant, however, so if lots of wetness concerns you,  use this one as a body spray!

You say you want strong, lasting, odor protection in an effective antiperspirant that's invisible on your skin? Not an impossible task for Secret Platinum Invisible Solid Antiperspirant/Deodorant $3.79 2.06 oz This well recognized product has time release technology that consistently releases scent to keep odor away, while it stops wetness. We got "Glacier Mist"  to review (which we thought actually smelled " fruity"), but there's also Mystic Rain, Ocean Breeze, and Powder Fresh. The solid stick goes on smooth, dry and we are happy to report that after a hot, sticky day, we were still "protected."

Avon never ceases to amaze us. Their Skin-So-Soft Hair Minimizing Roll-on Anti-perspirant Deodorant $3.00 does what you'd expect -- effectively minimizes wetness and odor, but it goes one step further -- it has skin-so-soft- smooth complex to help your underarm skin stay smoother, longer so that you don't have to shave so often!  A fresh, marine-inspired scent and no visible residue make this one something you'll want to try..and love.

J/A/SÖ/N  Pure, Natural and Organic Deodorant Roll-On $5.00 is mild and 70% organic, but it still provides long-lasting protection. We like the large, easy applying, rollerball top, and the refreshing, aromatherapy scents (we tried calming lavender, refreshing apricot, and light Aloe Vera). Both men and women who would prefer a product that contains botanicals of flowers, plants, vegetables, and herbs, instead of something concocted in a test tube, will want to give one of these a try, this summer.
