It was definitely Winter outside, while I was writing most of the reviews below. But recently, I saw the green tips of crocuses coming up, even as the snow fell on them. It reminded me that Spring is almost here. This early Spring (March/April) What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column gives you an idea of the colors and trends you'll find right now, or very soon, in all your favorite stores. When the seasons change, it gives you a new opportunity to refresh you mind, spirit, and body. Some of these reviews have links to a larger review (many with photos and videos) that appeared first on the Advice Sisters Blog. I am including portions here, with a link back to that blog post, because these reviews couldn't fit into a two column format, and I wanted to make sure you still got all the details on these products. Please share your favorites on Twitter and other social networking media. You can find me on Twitter @advicesisters and Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/alisonblackman I look forward to hearing your thoughts! Happy Spring! -- Alison Blackman Dunham aka. BATH & BODY BOOTY:
Natural beauty products are hot. The Purist Soap bar $7.00 by Portico is chic, and cheap with organic shea butter and organic olive leaf extract, has aloe leaf juice, grapeseed oil, olive leaf extract, pomegranate extract, shea butter, sweet almond oil and glycerin. What it doesn't have is anything bad to irritate your skin, such as What it does not have is: parabens, artificial color, propylene glycol, mineral oils, silicones, or detergents and of course. Portico products are also not tested on animals. The pure, white soap bar is very moisturizing and it has antioxidants. It's good for everyone, but especially those with sensitive skin. There are several different scents in the Portico line, including the one we tried: cucumber & grapefruit. This . This particular scent isn't fruity or sweet, but a more elegant, astringent scent that will appeal to men as well as women. We also liked the Amber and Olive Wood and Blood Orange and Jasmine scents. Neither is too obvious, or too fruity or floral. The Revitalizer Body Wash $16.00 8.5 fl. oz that we tried in the other two scents didn't foam up too much, but cleansed, nicely. Certified organic ingredients including aloe leaf juice, and extracts of linseed, olive leaf, white tea, grape seed, and jojoba, plus glycerin, sodium PCA, and Vitamin C, help moisturize, soothe, condition, protect, and provide antioxidant bennies. The Nurturer Cream Body Wash $18.00 8.5 fl. oz. has all of the above, and avocado oil which is extremely moisturizing, and soy protein t0 strengthen hair and skin. Our skin felt softer, less dry, and clean, of course! The Amber and Olive Wood scent seemed to me to be a sensual, gourmand, but my other reviewer disagreed. She thought it was more clean and masculine. We agreed that the Blood Orange and Jasmine was a bit more feminine, but not too "flowery." We also both agreed that these Portico scents have just enough intensity. We also agreed that these are an affordable way to enjoy spa-style bath & body products that make daily life just a little more satisfying. The Advice Sisters have reviewed (and loved) many products from Whish, including their Shave Crave and Shave Savour, both of which come in yummy scents with luxe, skin pampering formulas. But now our skin is craving something else: a great exfoliator. Luckily, Whish makes one of those, too. Their Sugar Scrub $38.00 12 oz. is a jar of non-greasy, good-for-your-skin, with moisturizing ingredients that exfoliate with brown sugar, raspberry seed, bamboo powder, and organic sugar cane. But it also moisturizes with organic shea butter, organic raspberry butter, and organic aloe. Vitamin E extract and organic avocado oil renew after you've dealt with those dead, skin cells. For those who care, the product is also gluten free (I don't suggest you ingest any, even though it smells good enough to eat), and paraben, sulfate, TEA & DEA, and petrochemical free. It is not tested on animals and it's made in the USA. All that's is great, but the main purpose of a sugar scrub is to exfoliate. This one is nearly solid in the plastic jar, so it won't drip and make a mess all over your tub or shower. Smooth it on where you need it and it stays put, with scents of pomegranate, lemon grass or almond. It doesn't feel harsh, or gross, either. Well worth it! I "Whish" for more from this excellent brand!!!
Hands, Nails & Feet:
Everything old eventually becomes new again. That is definitely the case with Boots Original Beauty Formula products. These old time formulas were discovered in the Boots archives, going back to the mid 1800's. The outer packaging features soft rose-colored cardboard with white and black "apothecary" style labels. These just make you feel pampered, even though they're not expensive. One of my favorites in this line for bath & body is the Boots Original Formula Lavender Hand Cream $7.99 1.5 oz. The white "ointment" style tube with screw cap contains a lovely, light, quickly absorbed hand cream (enriched with Lanolin--a natural, super-moisturizer) that does what it is supposed to: hydrates and smoothes even dry, irritated skin. I am also a fan of the rose-scented Boots Original Formula Cuticle Oil $7.99 .4 fl. oz. A non greasy cuticle oil delivered in a glass bottle with rubber stopper/dropper has jojoba and rose oils to soften, hydrate. soothe, and help stop cracking and peeling. If you are trying to get your nails to grow long and strong, having cuticles that are healthy and can be pushed back, is essential. The rose scent in this product s light, but makes this product a lot nicer to use than those with "chemical" smells. Simply apply one drop (with the dropper top) onto each nail bed and massage it in until it is absorbed. You can massage the rest into your hands, too. The Advice Sisters also reviewed the Lavender & Rosemary Body Lotion (another of my go-to faves) on the Holiday What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column.
When I think of the word "hemp" I think of rope, but it has lots of other names, including: cannabis, marijuana, bhang, ganja, hashish, etc. Most people think of cannabis as something smoked for hallucinogenic effect, but hemp is actually used for many other things including the production of paper, rope, twine and cloth (did you know that the original Levi's jeans were actually made from hemp?). You can eat the seeds as a high-protein grain, turn it into a tofu-like cheese substitute, or use it pressed to make oil for pants and varnishes. In this case, it is blended with botanicals and oils that help nourish your skin and leave it effectively hydrated. Perlier, known for it's excellent and very varied collections of bath and body products, has three nifty new items in a Hemp Nail Set $24.50 for nails and hands, featuring Hemp with Rosemary Oil. After a cold, dry Winter, when skin and even nails are dry and tired, the Perlier Hemp products can really work some magic. I love the Hemp with Rosemary Oil Restorative Hand Cream 5 fl. oz. The rich and creamy lotion comes in a green flip top tube with black and white accents, and a "leaf" that is unmistakably a cannabis leaf. It's so "cool," even guys will want to use it. The ingredients include intense hydration thanks to hemp, borage, soya and sunflower seed oil, and Vitamins B, C & E. The cream has a light, slightly herbal scent, and it absorbs very quickly into your hands, turning claws back into silky paws! The Cuticle Oil .27 fl. oz. is also excellent. It's a no brainer to apply some around your cuticles every evening from the roller ball bottle. Healthy cuticles helps your nails grow faster and longer. Even guys don't like the feel of dry, cracked cuticles, so don't be shy...share! The kit also comes with a really cute, slim, Kermit-green manicure set with six, essential tools for well groomed nails: nail clipper, dual sided buffer, metal nail file, cuticle scissors, and a dual-ended "pusher" (wrap with a small bit of cotton to gently push back cuticles. It's a fantastic value, a wonderful gift, and a little treat for yourself.
I have always liked Sally Hansen products. As a budget-minded brand, they've really stepped up their image and now they're not just high performance, they're really trendy, too. For example, the Complete Salon Manicure $4.75. It has all 5 steps of a manicure in one bottle. There's base coat, strengthener, growth treatment, color, and top coat. All you have to do is pick one of 42 shades, use one coat, and you're good to go. Even the shine is self-renewing! Even better, Sally Hansen products nourish your nails, with a patented "Vita-Care Technology" that offers long lasting wear, more shine, and nourishment your nails will love. Sally Hansen products are also Toluene, DBP, and Formaldehyde free. I tried "Gray by Gray," a blue-gray that's good, night or day! One coat, applied with Sally Hansen's large and well-formed brush tip, works wonders. The bottle also has a circle of rubber to grip so you don't slip. Genius! I'm also a fan of the quick and easy, tote-able Color Quick Chrome Pen $7.95 that let you Click and coat with an all-in-one nail polish "pen" with brush tip. These also have Panthenol and anti-oxidant Vitamins A, C, & E to condition nails plus a UV Protector to help keep color fresh and true. Now there are new colors to love, such as "Purple Chrome," a frosty lilac that will make you feel like Spring is here, right now. TIP; Keep your manicure looking fresh with a coat of Nail Shine Miracle Top Coat. If your nails are not as healthy as you'd like them to be, Sally Hansen also has new products to nourish them, without color. Continuous Treatment Continuous Treatment GROWTH Formula $8.99, for example, is a bottle of base coat (or use on bare nails) that has an exclusive, blue algae formula to lock in nourishment for 10 continuous days, with a patented time-release technology. This product has a patented, "Vita-Release Technology" Formula that releases those vitamins to your nails--and you don't have to do a single thing! I also like the innovative, 14 Day Nail Shield $6.99/16 strips is so easy to use, there are no excuses for bad nails anymore! These have an adhesive polymer strip technology that sends the treatment right to your nails. The pretreated, sheer color strips bond to nail so you don't even have to add polish. Get them in three, sheer shades to help your nails look better now and grow longer for the future. I like "Sheer Blush," a very soft nude, and my nails never looked better. Press, shape, and you're on your way to healthier nails that look professionally done for up to 14 days! The product is a bit pricey since it's a one-shot manicure, but they last, and they're easy, and they're great for travel. Well worth the price.
It’s Spring! Stash those berries, plums and blackened everything colors, and make nails look blooming new, with colors that take their cue from nature. The Shades by Barielle Wildflower Collection Nail Colors $8.00 feature six Springtime shades that look like a bouquet in, and for, your hands. I think of the four blue and two pink/peach shades as blossoms and stems. Even better, three of these beautiful shades will give 100% of their proceeds to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, if you purchase them at http://www.ocrf.org./ Go to the Advice Sisters Blog and get all the details! Wear Nail Essie Polish $8.00 from Essie's ART of SPRING Collection, and you'll feel like the Easter Bunny has just landed! The six latest shades are very feminine and pretty, and a perfect antidote to the dramatic but deep, blackened palette of Winter. Several coats of each will give you a touch of a Spring bouquet, right now. The collection is: Pop Art Pink, a sheer chiffon pink (for "Ballet Slippers" fans); Lilacism, a creamy, clear lilac (the perfect Easter Egg color and it works well with the end-of-Winter wools, too); Neo Whimsical, a romantic, warm, creamy, slightly faded dusty plum; Van D’go, a yummy, light melon that looks like it has been whipped with cream; Tart Deco: a light coral that looks ripe and rich, and just bright enough; Red Nouveau: a smooth, chili pepper red that is just a bit brighter and warmer the red for warmer weather. I've been a fan of Essie for years. Their polishes are 3-free –No DBP, formaldehyde, or toluene. The colors range from classic to trendy, and they apply easily and wear well. They're one of the top choices in salons and spas, everywhere. TIP: for a longer lasting manicure, Essie suggests using a base, like "First Base" Base Coat and top coat, like "Good to Go!" The base coat prepares the polish to adhere, and the top coat seals in color. Wait 2 minutes in between color applications so that the polish can set. A few days later, "Shine-e" will refresh polish to a top shine finish
MAGICAL MAKEUP:
September is Ovarian Cancer month, and October is Breast Cancer month, but Cervical Cancer is another potential killer of women that you should know about. The good news is that Cervical Cancer is preventable if diagnosed early (e.g. with regular pap smears). There's also a vaccine that is suitable for young women ages 9-26. Celebrity Makeup artist Debra Macki has created an Eye Shadow Palette $36.00 in support of The Yellow Umbrella Organization. TYO is an organization that helps empower and educate women about cervical cancer, so that fewer will continue to die from the disease. The trio of silky, powder shadows consists of universally flattering tones created with saturated mineral pigments that are fragrance, talc, and paraben free. The colors were inspired by Monaco: a medium nude shimmer, a warm, pink-ish, medium plum, and a deep, purple/blue with starry gold sparkle (makes a great alternative to black, brown or grey in a smoky eye, or as a liner). Macki knows her stuff, and she's created eye shadows that blend beautifully and will make you feel glamorous. But you won't just look great. You can also feel great, knowing that 80% of the cost of your Debra Macki palette will directly support The Yellow Umbrella. Why not get one for Mom for Mother's Day as well as one for yourself? I n the past, The Advice Sisters raved about Pur Minerals Correcting Primers in Green (to offset redness and discoloration) and Peach to cover under eye circles, age spots, dark spots, freckles, and uneven skin tone). Now we're giving thumbs up to the Colour Correcting Primer $31.00 1 fl. oz. in "Natural." This version is white in the glass, pump bottle, but clear on your skin. When first tried it on the rougher skin on the back of my hand, I couldn't see any difference, but I could definitely feel it. The side with the primer was silky and smooth--a perfect "canvas" for applying foundation and other products. Even healthy skin gets flaky and can be bumpy at times and a primer not only smoothes out these imperfections, it helps your makeup last longer. If you don't need a primer with color corrector, this is the must-have for your beauty routine this season. FYI: these products are free of talc, chemical dyes, petroleum-based oils and fillers. but they have Titanium Dioxide (antioxidant and protective) and a naturally fragranced, silicone-based formula that works on all skin types. I personally love these and think you will too. These exceptional performer are well worth the little bit extra.
Whenever I try cosmetics by Givenchy, I know they're going to have a "wow!" factor. For Spring 2010 Givenchy does not disappoint! Givenchy has not only created a large collection of prisme powder shadows, blush, bronzers, and foundation, but they have also tweaked the already luxurious compacts they are housed in a new, clap & slide” mirrored compact for the face products (the lower drawer slides out to reveal the very use able powder, brush, with soft, wide and contoured bristles). I am hooked! The collection is beautiful, and varied. For example, there are a whopping, 16 new quartets of color in chic, square, black mirrored compacts. What makes these super-special is that the four colors are not just the same color in different intensities, they have different formulas: matte, light pearl, intense pearl, and "sequined" (super-shimmer) formulas. You can use one, two, three or all four. In fact the paper insert in the box shows you easy, "paint by the numbers" looks for day and evening that you can make with just the one palette. You will have a hard time choosing just one as they're all beautiful: 01 Showy Black; 02 New Look Mauve; 03 Hip Grey ; 04 Must-Have Blue; 05 Stylish Green; 06 Chic Coral: 07 Fashion Pink: 08 Fancy Coffee: 09 Modish Brown: 10 Smart Nude: 11 Dressy Indigo: 12 Casual Khaki 13: Trendy Plum 14 : Elegant Taupe: 15 Couture Beige; and 16 Signature White. ...this is just for starters--there is so much more. Check out my extensive review with photos, on the Advice Sisters Blog.
Back in 2004, The Advice Sisters introduced readers to Scott Barnes Body Bling $48.00 4 fl. oz. As I recall, this was one of the first "faux bronzers" I tried, way before the plethora of fake tanners that you can't wash off. Self tanners have become more sophisticated, but I still don't like the idea that once you apply them, they are stuck on you until they wear off. I like Scott Barnes Body Bling because it will give you a better than bronze (with shimmery, gold highlights) "tan" that sun can't realistically, or safely, provide, and moisturize your skin as well. This products lets you "go for the gold" temporarily, until you wash it off. I like the way it smoothes on easily, and stays put without rubbing off on your clothes. The color is medium to deep bronze (depending upon how much you use). Nearly every actress baring skin on the red carpet wears some sort of faux bronzer/skin enhancer and Scott Barnes's client list includes Kate Hudson, Jennifer Anniston, Lil Kim and JLo. For those with lighter skin, there's Body Bling Platinum (a pearl base with champagne highlights) TIP: shimmery, body bronzer on less than perfect legs hides imperfections, and makes going without pantyhose ala. Michelle Obama, prettier.
The FACE Stockholm Spring 2010 collection to share with you. It is available now, and includes an ethereal look that virtually anyone can wear. The focus is on soft roses for cheeks and lips, metallic copper and soft browns for eyes, with the surprise of an inky, navy eyeliner. The Spring 2010 vision is a supernatural force in the Swedish countryside that works to create an airy but earthy look. Check out the review on the Advice Sisters Blog Back in December 2009, I attended a Sassy City Chicks Shopping Event and met Eve Pearl. She is not just a personal make-up artist to the Today Show's Meredith Vieira, she is also a frequent on-air guest and expert, performing make-overs and providing make-up and beauty advice. Eve Pearl has her own line of cosmetics, including a unique, Salmon Concealer $35.00 that comes in light, medium, dark and tan salmon -- but not ivory or beige. Peachy tones neutralize dark blue undertones, and the color really makes sense when you see it in action. Your dark circles are diminished, and you avoid ashy, white-ish "raccoon" eyes that you can sometimes get from an ordinary concealer. The creamy concealer is full coverage, and literally blends itself into your skin with your fingertips (you can use a brush or sponge, too, of course). It is good for all skin types, and has antioxidants such as AstaReal®/Astaxanthin. Eve Pearl's literature says that among the many skin benefits is support for skin at the cellular level, with no harsh chemicals, contributes to the reduction of hyper-pigmentation, and more. That's a lot to expect from a concealer, but Eve Pearl definitely knows what she's doing. There's a lot more to discover in this line, including more products I reviewed on the Advice Sisters blog, and a how-to video. I and hope you'll check out that post, too. I am a fan of Clinique mascaras. I went to a Clinique event last year where they showcased a whole lot of them. And, now, there is one more: High Lengths Mascara $14.00. This new mascara has a curved "willow" wand applicator that follows the natural contour of your eyes, allowing the wand's "fine toothed comb" to grab every lash at the root, making lashes look longer and fuller. The wand is quite long and slim, and incredibly easy to use. I was able to color all of those tiny little hairs in just one pass. If your lashes are light, you will be amazed at the difference! I also like the lightweight formula that is a combo of soft waxes and a light thickener for flexible texture. The lash-softening formula conditions, thanks to ingredients such as sodium hyalauronate, panthenol, and pantethine. Even better, contact lens wearers and those with sensitive eyes can enjoy this new mascara without trouble. This new mascara is available in black and black/brown. It is smudge resistant, long wearing, and fragrance free. If you're seeking a new mascara for Spring...spring for this one! And add some "lift!" to your brows, with Clinique's Instant Lift For Brows $15.00. This brow filling powerhouse has a pencil on one end, a brow bone highlighter on the other. The wax-based, powdery-cream brow filler glides over brows and deposits color where you need it to fill in sparse pieces in soft blonde, soft brown, or deep brown. The brow bone highlighter is a universally flattering champagne/pink to brighten the eye and create the illusion of a lifted brow (makes you look awake, and fresh). Apply it directly on the brow bone, and blend it up and outward. It really makes a difference. The water-resistant product is also fragrance free and ophthalmologist tested.
N.Y.C. Color is one of those drugstore brands that constantly surprised and delights me. They line features trendy colors and formulas, with super-affordable price points. The newest collection, created by makeup artist Mathew Nigara, really lets you create runway-ready looks at home, with products that cost less than a sandwich! My favorite product is the Extreme Lip Glider $3.99 that comes in a squeeze tube with slant tip as small as a Slim Jim, with color that's sheer, shimmery, and in 10 fabulous shades. It is so great, I want All of them. I loved the products so much I wrote about them in detail on the Advice Sisters Blog. Please read the entire review.
Larenim's slogan is: "all mineral makeup is not created equal." For example, their Dusk Til Dawn $15.99 Loose Powder Primer called "Sheer Perfection" is directed towards people with acne prone and/or oily skin. This powder looks white in the shaker jar, but it’s clear on your skin, providing anti-microbial and healing properties, while helping to blot excess oil. The product is so super light and puffy, you need a large, puffy, kabuki brush to grip it and distribute it onto your skin. Simply "sandwich" a light dusting of the product between two layers of Larenim Foundation. The key ingredients of Kaolin, Zinc Oxide, Water Processed Green Tea Extract really help people who simply cannot manage makeup without oily breakthrough. At night, brush on Dusk til Dawn Recovery $20.99. This shaker jar of loose powder minerals has also has Kaolin, Zinc Oxide, and Green Tea Extract, plus Kigelia Africana and Niacinimide, offering antioxidants and support for blemished, flushed and/or aging skin. There’s also a Dusk til Dawn Fresh Facial Detox Masque $17.99 2 oz., good for all skin types. Mix the dry minerals (with water or apple cider vinegar) as you need it, and avoid products that dry out or encourage bacteria. The ingredients are few, and natural: bentonite clay, water processed green tea extract, and zinc oxide help to pull out impurities in your skin. If your skin is dry or sensitive, you might only want to use it once a week or less, but everyone else can enjoy this 15-20 minute masque more frequently. Larenim also has a very impressive color collection, but that we didn't try, but I’m guessing they’re quite good.
The Beauty in Bloom "Glambox" by Smashbox $68.00 is a limited edition box of beauty with all the items you need to make your newday & night looks, "blossom." Kits like this are not only great because the colors are coordinated for you (no false guessing) and there are how-to instructions so you can really re-create the look you want. But they're also a great value. If you purchased these items separately, they would run you much more! What's in this Beauty in Bloom, GlamBox? Simple answer: a lot! If you want to know all of the details, please visit the comprehensive review on the Advice Sisters Blog.
USER-FRIENDLY FRAGRANCES:
Wrapped With Love Hilary Duff Eau De Parfum $38.00 1.7 fl. oz. is a tempting fragrance from youthful and chic, celebrity. The pink-tinted juice starts out loaded with fruits, including iced honeydew, mandarin, Sicilian blood orange and mangosteen, but a heart of plum, violet, white lily and mangosteen blossom, and a bottom of gourmand notes such as vanilla bean, raspberry, a hint of musk, and a very yummy, significant white chocolate mousse, temper it quite a bit. It's like flowers and candy, and love, all mixed together in a very petty package, inside and out. There's an eye-catching, vibrant pink carton with lime green with gold and green accents sprinkled on the box like delicate "flowers." Collectors will covet the elegant, faceted glass bottle with braided gold-rimmed top) with peridot and pink sapphire accents (Ms. Duff did have a hand in designing the bottle). My personal favorite piece is the hexagonal, peridot plastic diffuser cover, with the bar cap representing warmth, joy and optimism). This scent is sexy but light, youthful, but universally appealing. It isn't absolutely new (it launched in 2008), but it's still a great choice for Spring. FYI: The original With Love, Hilary Duff is one of my faves. too.
Britney Spears, in love with the "circus story" she created for her (then) tour, and hopes that Circus Fantasy, the fragrance she created with Elizabeth Arden, would convey some of that excitement in bottled form to her fans. Launched in August 2009, Circus Fantasy Eau de Parfum Spray $35.00 1.0 fl. Oz; $45.00 1.7 fl. Oz; $55.00 3.3 fl. Oz by Britney Spears is eye catching from the brightly colored outer carton in bold red, yellow and blue, to the inner bottle, a pearly, light blue orb studded with red rhinestones, a neck wrapped with a blue, metallic, studded "chain" and a clear blue plastic bubble over the spray diffuser. Like the packaging, or a three-ring circus under the "Big Top," there's a lot going on in this fragrance. It starts out with a bang with lots of fruit: Top notes incorporate juicy raspberry zest and apricot blossom. The heart announces itself fairly quickly: notes of blue peony along with lotus and red sweetheart orchid. So far, I'm loving the "performance." But base notes including vanilla, musk and violet candy overpower upon drydown, leaving the feeling of cotton candy with little to support it. Like the original Britney Spears Fantasy, and Midnight Fantasy, Britney Spears fans will love anything she puts her name to. But even non fans who are young-ish, will find the lighthearted scent, appealing on it's own merits.
I thought M by Mariah Carey had the most beautiful perfume bottle of the year, when I reviewed it back in December 2007. Others have followed. The latest in my search for beauty inside and outside the bottle is, Mariah Carey Forever Eau de Parfum $65.00 3.3 oz.. This very feminine scent has a flacon worthy of Jean Harlow, or another goddess from the Silver Screen. In fact, the advertising shows a very glam Ms. Carey lounging in a 30's style, white satin evening gown. The perfume takes it's name from a 1996 Mariah Carey song. The fragrance itself is nearly clear, developed by perfumer Olivier Gillotin. It's an elegant and significant (mostly white) floral fragrance, with notes including: neroli, lotus blossom, dewy green apple, tuberose, gardenia, white musk and exotic woodssage. I'm not a floral fan and watery, white florals don't generally appeal to me. In this fragrance, the white florals come on strong at first, but dry down to a more subdued, sensual, floral that stops shouting and shows itself in a ladylike way. It is the bottle once again, that captivates me as it will, collectors. It's something you'd see on a deco dressing table. The craggy, asymmetrical block of glass has a golden neck with the name delicately engraved on it, and it's topped is topped by a spire of clear, faceted plastic rising to the sky. The outer packaging is hot pink trimmed in soft, gold metallic, embossed with a classic, art deco design. If you want to feel glamorous, Mariah Carey Forever is waiting for it's closeup on your skin!
When All You’ve Ever Wanted, a new fragrance by Helena Rubenstein (inspired by Demi Moore), was released, I knew I had to try it. Demi Moore is the ultimate "Cougar," with a hunky, much younger husband and an actress who never gives up. She works for her beautiful body, and her fame. All You’ve Ever Wanted is an intoxicating, empowering fragrance, created by Carlos Benaim and Dominique Ropion. This fragrance really grabbed me. So much so that I wrote more extensively about it in an Advice Sisters Blog Post you should read.
Orchids are wild and beautiful, and often, rare. Now a new celebrity fragrance, Pure Orchid by Halle Berry $28.00 1 fl. oz. for Coty, attempts to bottle that beauty. This limited edition scent embodies the exotic beauty of the woman that inspired it and the exotic beauty of the flower for which it is named. The scent, designers by perfumers Rodrigo Flores-Roux & Christophe Raynaud of Givaudan, have done a great job --especially for a modestly priced product. The fragrance is officially categorized: "sensual floral woody." But it starts out sweet and fruity. My nose zoned in on vanilla, even though it isn't listed in the notes. In any case, it's the Masdevallia Orchid that makes the scent, enchanting. As the scent dries down, there is an interesting mix of notes. Spice and woods and creamy notes mix with the usual, ladylike ones. The actual notes are: top notes: crisp Italian Lemon, Papaya Nectar Fizz and Jungle Cactus Flower; Mid Notes: Masdevallia Orchid, a touch of Blackberry Crème Concentré and subtly sweet Star Anise; and, bottom notes: Giant Sequoia, Patchouli Leaf, and Tonka Bean providing a sensual and elegant base. Although this celebrity fragrance is modestly priced, like an abstract painting, you see more and more in it as you spend time with it. I also love the carton, designed by Lutz Hermann with purple, metallic accents, and a large head-and-shoulders photo of Ms. Berry. She is the star, and only a light wash of a photo of an orchid hints at what might be inside. I love the lilac-tinted glass spray flacon. designed by Jane Tarallo. It is a re-imagining of the original Halle by Halle Berry fragrance bottle; a heavy glass low rectangle, embossed with a pattern that looks like flowing of ocean waves and sand, all done in shades of purple and silver (supposed to evoke the distinct colors and luminous feel of twilight).
Not long ago, I reviewed Flora by Gucci and fell in love with the generation-spanning, ladylike fragrance that was inspired by Gucci's iconic, Flora pattern (originally in a silk scarf specifically designed for Princess Grace of Monaco in 1966--still used today). When you first spray Gucci Flora, there is an immediate smell of fruit mixed with flowers. In fact, the top notes are citrus and peony. But when these notes are mixed with the heart of rose and osmanthus flower, you get a whiff of something fruity and light, with a hint of rose. Wait just a moment more, and that fruity floral is countered by the velvety, leathery aspects of the osmanthus. The base is a sensual but not heavy blend of sandalwood and patchouli (signatures of the Gucci fragrance world.). The result is a modern, playful floral that has a hint of sensuality. When I smell Flora, I want to dress up in a cashmere sweater, or dress up and go somewhere special. Gucci Flora has a superb Body Milk $45.00 6.7 fl. Oz and a Shower Gel $38.00 6.7 fl. oz. that both are packaged in striking, hexagonal, plastic bottles with hexagonal caps. Like Her Serene Highness Princess Grace, the elegance in these products is a cooperation between the designer, and the wearer. It's ladylike, sophisticated, and lovely.
I reviewed two fragrances from Dolce & Gabbana on the that came out right after I posted by last What Works column. If you love roses, you can enjoy a thoroughly modern homage to the flower: Dolce & Gabbana Rose The One. The original Dolce & Gabbana The One fragrance is a favorite of mine, gourmand-like, creamy, and delicious. This new scent, however, is light, and has a fruity friendship with the rose. You'll smell roses, but there are complimentary notes that enhance, and entice. The actual top notes are pink grapefruit manadarin and cassis. The heart is peony, lily, lychee and Bulgarian rose. The drydown has a hint of vanilla, musk and amber. The sophisticated blend is light enough for day and romantic enough for evening. What I like so much about Dolce & Gabbana Rose The One is that it is essentially a floral with fruit, not just rose, even though the star note is Bulgarian rose. Read more about Dolce & Gabbana Rose The One. AND: I felt an immediate sense that Spring is here, when I tried the sunny, Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue By Dolce & Gabbana Pour Femme. The happy, uplifting fragrance is categorized as a fruity floral, inspired by the Mediterranean. Top notes are: Sicilian cedar, granny smith apple, bluebell, (sunny Sicilian Summer) Middle notes, bamboo, jasmine and white rose, bottom: citron wood, amber and musk. I tried the Refreshing Body Cream, a perfect pick me up for dry, Winter weary skin. You can't help but feel confident that the product will not only smell good, but silken you skin, when you touch the light blue, velvety surface of the outer carton-- soft as a whisper. The baby blue color and soft touch reminds you that you are a lady. But if you like the scent, there's also a men's version, although it is heavier on the woods and a bit more tart on the top notes. Beyoncé Giselle Knowles, also simply known as "Beyoncé , is a talented singer-songwriter, record producer, actress, dancer, choreographer, model, video director and now....fragrance creator. Her first fragrance, Beyoncé Heat 30, 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum ($39-$59.00 is a fruity floral with just a touch of spice and woods. It's feminine, but not "girly." Beyoncé explains: "My fragrance is a unique expression of a woman's powerful sensuality. The scent thrills and enthralls, drawing you in. At the same time, it is elegant and feminine with an air of mystery. Want to know more about Beyoncé Heat? Read the Advice Sisters review on the Advice Sisters Blog. |

BEAUTIFUL, HEALTHY HAIR:
In the Winter 2010 What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column, The Advice Sisters introduced readers to Kairos, a unique line that creates unusual hair care products that can do something special -- treat acne as well as keep hair shiny and clean. The kind of products you use can have a big impact on your skin as well as your hair, causing irritation or worse, breakouts. One product that I think is very good and benefits all skin types is the Kairos Heat Protectant Clear Style Thermal Spray $26.00 8 fl. oz. The clear liquid in a plastic pump bottle smells lightly like Lily of the Valley (to my nose, at least) or perhaps, a light floral bouquet. It's actually very pretty. The liquid isn't sticky and dries fast and clear. But what is really supposed to do is protect against damage from heat styling, while leaving hair shiny and soft. This is does, beautifully. I noticed Panthenol, and lavender and tea tree leaf oils in the ingredients, along with smoothers and shine enhancers. All good stuff. You'll pay a little bit more than the average for this protective spray, but if you have skin issues, the cost will be minimal and the benefits, bountiful. It's a good heat protective spray no matter what skin type you have, so certainly "share" this product with just about anyone.
Chocolat (without the "E") Special sounds like an ice-cream parlor treat, but it is the name of a hair care treatment line by NuNaat. The chocolate tinted bottles with gold lettering caught my eye. The line is from Brazil, popular with Latinas and also popular, I’m told, in France. But the company is in Brazil, and uses a variety of natural ingredients, mainly found in the Amazon Forest (obtained through ecological processes and sustainable development, which helps to generate income for the local communities and contributes to the forests preservation). If that’s not enough to make you feel friendly towards Chocolat Special, note that the Creamy Chocolate Shampoo $6.49 8.4 fl. oz. really does contain cocoa butter and brazil nut oils as two of the key ingredients. Both of these ingredients are highly emollient and help reduce frizz and boost shine. Those with slightly coarse to coarse hair will also like the Chocolat Special Antifrizz Treatment $8.49 5.2 fl. oz, that’s activated by the heat of your dryer. The product helps to smooth and keep frizz at bay until you wash your hair again. It isn’t greasy and it is easy to apply from the flip-top plastic tube. The only thing missing is a chocolate scent (there isn’t any scent at all). The products are a bit unique, but they’re not at all pricey. You can visit the web site http://shop.nunaat.com/en/ or go to the web site and put in your zip code to see what local stores are carrying Nunaat. If you have hair that needs taming, NuNaat could be right for you. Everyone loves babies. They're cute and mini-sized. You just can't help wanting to pick them up and hold them, whether they're boys or girls, puppies or kittens, or heat stylers. Yes, I DID just say "heat stylers!" Conair has created three new "baby-sized" tools to style your hair that may not be as cute and cuddly as a baby or a kitten, but you will not be able to resist picking them up! There's a Conair MiniPRO Curling Iron $17.99; a Conair MiniPRO Compact Hot Rollers $19.99; and my favorite, the Conair MiniPRO 2-in-1 Ceramic Styler $29.99. These mini-sized tools are a must-have if you need to touch up on the go, or if you travel. And they're not just affordable, they have all the accoutrements of their larger sisters. Each has dual-voltage, and heat-resistant travel pouches (cute ones). They have actual on/off switches that are lighted, so you know if they're on. And they heat up fast: 90 seconds for the rollers, 30 for the curling iron and ceramic styler. One of my favorite flat irons is the full sized Conair 2-in-1 Ceramic Styler. Now there's the You Style 2-in-1 Ceramic Styler MINIPro Flat irons straighten your hair, but this particular one has outer edges that are curved, so you can create curve ends, waves and even curls, just by twisting your wrist one way or the other. The MiniPRO Curling Iron is red, and it's the most amazing mini I've ever used, with a 1" barrel with ceramic technology. Simply wrap small pieces (about 1") around the barrel, hold for 20-3- seconds depending upon the type of hair you have, and the tightness of the curl you want. It is so affordable, you can keep one for home and travel (even if travel is just to the gym) and one in your desk at work for last-minute touch-ups. But for traditionalists who love a hot set, Conair offers a MiniPro set of hot rollers, with both the base and rollers colored lipstick red. There are ten rollers in three sizes: four small, three medium, and three large. An internal pouch in the case houses ten wire roller "pins" to hold the rollers securely. The rollers also have "starter strip grips" to help you grip hair and roll up more easily and smoothly. The entire unit in the case is only about the size of two decks of playing cards. Amazing! You can see why these baby-sized products are too tempting to ignore. They give you almost instant results, cost less than dinner, and they're by Conair, so they'll give you the quality and performance you want, for years. I'm smitten!
FACE FRIENDLY PRODUCTS:
Define Vitamin A Resurfacing Treatment by Cosmedix $74.00 1 fl. Oz is an unusual cream with a licorice/caramel scent. With a special blend of gentle acids and 2% AGP Complex, Define is designed to push the activity of the skin to a very powerful, but not "painful" exfoliating (the company calls it "remodeling") level. This treatment includes Vitamin A and it stimulates collagen and elastin production (while mildly hydrating your skin), as it eliminates a dead, dull, dry surface that can make you look older, and tired,. When you look at the ingredients, you will see a lot of positive things, including a number of well proven exfoliating acids, along with hydrating oils and botanicals. One interesting ingredient in Define is AGP Complex, an alternative to Retinol that doesn't irritate skin like Retinol can. AGP Complex is unique to Cosmedix. This cream is rich, and it really coats your skin, so I'd suggest using it at night, or when you're not going to be wearing foundation. But we like the idea that one little jar helps you gently exfoliate, hydrate, nourish and help make skin more youthful while you sleep! We like the smell, too. If you like the way a product looks, smells, and feels, you are much more likely to use it. What can we say? The think Define has the right stuff! When I was a teenager and suffered with pimples, I took some comfort knowing that they wouldn't last forever. By the time I was a grown woman I'd never break out again! Well, now that I am an adult, I realize" "never say never." Yes, I still break out, because everyone breaks out (from hormonal changes, stress, or diet) now and then. Luckily, the company that got many of us through those pimply teenage years has something new, slim, easy and affordable to zap zits. Clearasil Ultra Pimple Blocker Pen $9.99 08. oz. is easy to tote in your makeup bag. It has an angled tip to dispense a clear gel right onto a pimple, any time you see one starting to form. The 2% salicylic acid gives you what you need to fight acne, and you don't have to do much more than just dab it on a few times, to see pimples, retreat. While product reviews can be highly subjective, I tried this one on a large, "underground" pimple that was shaping up to stick around for days. I applied a bit of this Clearasil pimple blocking gel to the area right away, and then again that night, By morning, the pimple was nearly gone. This product is easy, affordable, and impressively good! Sponge products were originally formulated by a doctor for the care of his pregnant patients, but obviously, this high end line has found it's way into the hearts of others. Sponge uses hand blended botanicals, and each cream has a base of first pressed extra-virgin olive oil to promote firming, anti-oxidant and overall health benefits. The company uses organic and wild-crafted ingredients which are naturally extracted by boiling the plants, herbs and flowers to particular temperatures and times, based upon the maturity and the region in Greece it was grown in. This helps to retain the highest amount of nutrients and vitamins. Sponge is also environmentally conscious in their production practice and in their packaging. Let me cut to the bottom line: I was impressed with the products, and thought you would like to know about them. I don't generally review tiny samples (all that The Advice Sisters received) because I genuinely believe that a good reviewer needs to look at the product holistically, from the outer carton to the bottles, and you need enough of the product to try it more than just once (especially if you have more than one reviewer critique the sample). But how could I resist reviewing a line called “Sponge? I enjoyed the Galaktoma Somatos (Body Milk) $65.00 100 ml with St. John’s Wort and peppermint, plus healing, smoothing, moisturizing olive leaf. St. Johns Wort helps soothe your nerves when brewed in tea, and it also helps calm stressed skin. The peppermint cools and soothe your skin. The Body Milk also moisturizes your skin and has anti-inflammatory anti-irritant properties. You can really this product enveloping your skin as if in a cashmere blanket. Apply it right after you’ve bathed, while your skin is still moist, and reap the most benefits. and reap the bennies. We also were impressed with Krema Imeras Day Cream $65.00/50 ml. This rich cream has lime blossom, sage and rosemary as key players. Lime blossom is known to improve the elasticity of your skin, while it hydrates and nourishes. Sage helps enhance skin tone, helps to brighten, and to calm and heal, Rosemary improves circulation and works to relieve dryness. This herbally scented cream is rich –a little goes a long way. It made our skin feel soothed and smooth. There are many other products in this unique and luxurious line. They do have an upscale price tag, but they're not out of the realm of reason for those who expect a lot from their skin care and who care about “green” products with aromatherapy benefits. Be assured that they may be a bit hard of your wallet, but they're be super gentle on your skin! Sponge is special…and worthy of your consideration I can't help loving products that work while you sleep. It makes the process so effortless. Clinique Youth Surge Night Age Declerating Night Moisturizer $38.50 has exclusive ingredients that help “decelerate” the signs of aging. If you're a pessimist mist, you probably consider the fact that our skin starts to age the moment we are born, but Clinique isn't saying you're going to turn back the hands of time to toddler-hood. What this product can help you do is help slow down the process (decelerate) it. There are so many ingredients in this super-rich night cream, I gave up writing them all down. But the main thing to know about Clinique Youth Surge Night Age Declerating Night Moisturizer is that you'll be getting a myriad of ingredients that will help your skin repair itself, while it diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. There are powerful antioxidants, too. This cream works over time, so don't expect a 60 second miracle. But you will find that the cream absorbs completely, and quickly, leaving your skin feeling moisturized and full of "hope." It's also fragrance free, allergy tested, non acnegenic. Clinique makes great skin care, and this new product does seem .like a good choice for anyone who hopes to protect and nurture their skin, while fending off the aggressors that can age it. What you can’t see can benefit you, so if you're looking for a way to keep your skin looking younger, longer, this new cream, we think, gets a thumbs up! I discovered Kerestin Florian at the annual Fall media event, hosted by Spa Magazine. One of their products I really like is the Oil Free Daily Defense SPF 50 $48.00 1.7 fl. oz. I know that many people (and I raise my hand as one of them) are reluctant to use a daily sunscreen unless it is a multi-tasker that streamlines their beauty routine as well as it protects their skin. This oil, fragrance and paraben-free product has significant anti-aging benefits (as well as those you get from shelter your skin from the sun's UVA/UVB rays). It is lightweight and very moisturizing, and has a broad spectrum, non-whitening, water-resistant sunscreen SPF 50! The multi-tasking comes from anti-aging powerhouses pure Vitamin C and Co-Enzyme Q10, all in a sheer, matte finish. What you can’t see CAN harm you, and this SPF 50, anti-aging, mattifying protector has all you need to help you skin be the best it can be. The key ingredients: 10.5% zinc oxide, micronized for maximum invisibility on skin during application with 7.5 % Octinoxate; Vitamin C+ COMPLEX to boost collagen production and enhance structural skin support ( 50 times more active than standard Vitamin C); and anti-inflammatory. UBIQUINONE to offer strong antioxidant protection in the form of Co-Enzyme Q10. Impressive! To me, the most important thing to consider when choosing a product with SPF is how much protection it offers, and how pleasant it is to use on a daily basis. If you don’t like the way a product feels or smells, you aren't going to use it. This product is pleasant to use, but the SPF 50 is high enough to really protect your skin. The added bonus is the many anti-aging ingredients, for year-round benefits. The slim, soft, sided tube with pump is also easily portable. TIP: Apply this one about 30 minutes before sun exposure.

Not too long ago, The Advice Sisters reviewed a book called: Being Simply Beautiful, by Helen Noble. The book offers simple tips to stay young both inside, and out. BELACREMA® is a skin care line, also by Ms. Noble, with only two products: The One Creme, and The One Masque. I tried The One Cream $100.00 1.7 fl. oz. This pricey (but multi-purpose) cream in a simple, white, plastic jar multi-tasks so you don't have to load on eye cream, and night and day products. It simply works as the "one" cream you need for day and night. That couldn't be simpler! The product is made in Switzerland using ingredients with no harsh chemicals, dyes, or fragrances. Noble based The One on a "family secret" passed down through the generations, going back more than 100 years. BELACREMA® is a synergistic blend of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. There may be some secret ingredients, but the first couple on the jar include: water, sweet almond oil, lanolin, glycerin, and petrolatum, with antioxidant Vitamins E, D, and A at the bottom of the ingredients list. It is difficult to know how any skin cream will perform for everyone, but I have to say that the rich, easily absorbed cream has helped to keep my face from feeling dry and itchy so far this Winter, and maybe, just maybe, it's a bit more radiant than usual. This is the one cream I keep reaching for, lately, In three words: I like it! I am a big fan of Pur Minerals color cosmetics products (see "Magical Makeup in the left hand column") My first experience with their skincare was positive, but with some reservations. Tone Up $37.00.5 fl. oz. is an intensive, anti-aging treatment for eyes, that firms, lifts, and smoothes the eye area. Overall, I liked it. The clear liquid in a small, glass, pump bottle feels refreshing and light on your skin, and it doesn't bother you with any fragrance. You can definitely feel it tightening the skin, and it did de-puff, and lighten dark circles. But the ingredients are a mystery, and that does bother me. Pur Minerals does tend to care about using good stuff in it's products, but why not share at least a few, key ingredients, or advise if there is anything in this product that could be a problem for certain skin types. The company says the key to this product is "two breakthrough, clinically-tested ingredients and a proprietary mineral complex," but alas, I couldn't even get a clue what's really in the product. That could be challenging for someone with very sensitive skin. If you aren't sensitive to anything and are looking for a luxurious eye product that does a lot, this one is a good choice.
BEAUTY & FASHION HELPERS:
Is it wrong to love socks? Maybe not, if they're the Castaway Crew Socks from Gold Toe $15.00/3 pr. It's the cuddly softness of the spun rayon with spandex that has got fans. hooked. The socks fit sizes 6-9, and are 74% Spun Rayon/25% Stretch Nylon/and 1% Spandex, but they're softer than combed cotton. The crew length (8.5" from the heel to the top). is a versatile one. They cover more than just your ankles but they are not so long that you are stuck wearing knee-highs when you don't need that much coverage. A reinforced heel and toe helps longer wear. The socks also have a flat toe seam for added comfort inside your shoes. There are plenty of prints and colors to choose from. My 3-pack included a medium light blue, pure white, and a striped combo of blue & white. For just a bit more pampering, and for the cotton lover, I suggest the Gold Toe All Day Comfort Sock AquaFX $18.00/3 pr. They are pima cotton, with moisture control to keep your feet dry and comfortable, even if it's hot going on the pavement. The All Day comfort socks have the same, low profile elastic top as the Runway Crew socks, and they are the same length (perfect pants length). But these are 65% pima cotton, 32% aquaroad nylon and 3% spandex. If you've ever been on your feet all day and your feet like they're sweating so much you can't wait to go home and toss your shoes across the room, you'll appreciate these even more. They come in basic white, or colors, such as the mauve-ish "Winterberry," perfect for Spring!
As Spring approaches, you might want to consider accessories that not only look good, but do good, too. One accessories company that has affordable, chic and "green" accessories, is the Andean Collection. The company features jewelry made from natural ingredients, including tagua, pambil, açaí, huayruro and jabon. In addition to being paid fair wages, the artisans (mostly women) that create lovely jewelry for The Andean Collection also share in the profits as partial owners. For Spring 2010, color is a must-have, and so my favorite new accessory to add a pop! of color to anything is The Andean Collection's Acai Rope Necklace $39.00. It is a one-size fits all, super-long rope of seed beads that can be worn long, or wrapped several times. I love the turquoise one because it is such a sophisticated, go-with-everything color, but the beads also are dyed electric purple, fire (red), terra green (deep green), wine, and polished natural (bone). One strand looks impressive, but get two or three different ones, and wear them together for a true, statement piece. Açaí (ah-sah-EE) seeds comes from the Açaí Palm from the rainforests of South America. My necklace came with a small tag telling me that the artisan who made my necklace was "Nancy," and that she lives in Ecuador. What lovely thought and a great gift idea, too.
Warmer weather is here, and there's no hiding under bulky sweaters and coats. Luckily, new body shapers can make you look sleeker and slimmer, in an instant. One of the brands with a lot of variety, is Sculptz®. They have shapers that compress is varying degrees to tighten your tummy and rear, and slim your hips and thighs. If you want a piece that does more than just push the flap in where it belongs, try leggings with a brightly colored tunic top. Sculptz Control Top Leggings $40.00 come in Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large and in five gorgeous colors, from basic black and chocolate brown, to emerald (called: "shaken not stirred"); and red., copper, purple and plum, all with cute names. But the control top is enough to keep your mid-section flatter without feeling like a vice, It's 70% nylon, 30% spandex, with a cotton lined gusset for comfort. The luxe and silky, 70 denier fabric is opaque enough that these can be worn on their own with a dress, tank, tee, sweater or tunic, but they're not so heavy you can't wear them now that it is Spring. Pop on a pair of cute flats, and you're ready to roll!
While smelling good by wearing scent is an option, it's just as important to actually smell good (or at least not smell bad). FACE Stockholm's Chrystal Deodorant $9.00 3 fl. oz. is a natural deodorant, free of harmful aluminums, parabens, and chlorohydrate, that is good for anyone, man or woman, who wants an all-natural way to keep body odor, at bay! This deodorant combines pure mineral salts with chamomile to provide gentle, long lasting (up to 24 hours) protection. Most "crystal" deodorants don't last so long, but this one neutralizes bacteria to prevent odor, not cover it. For those who can't stand those icky, sticky products, this one will delight with a clear, clean, non-staining, non-sticky formula. You won't even know you have it on until you realize it is working! And it isn't just natural. it's also fragrance free and hypoallergenic. I like the clean, frosted plastic rollerball container--classy and simple. It's pricier than the drugstore brands, but consider: instead of buying "hers" and "his," you can both share this one!
The Card Cubby portable pouches cost less than $20.00 and are about the size of a small makeup bag (ou could use yours without the card inserts, just for toting small items like keys and lipstick). But what they're meant to do is keep business cards and coupons, organized. Color-coordinated, alphabetized index cards that fit perfectly inside the Card Cubby, are included. There are so many ways to use this clever accessory. For example, events, where the exchange of business cards flow like an endless river. But you can also use it for organizing discount coupons, frequent buyer cards, and those little plastic gift cards that always seem to be somewhere else, when you want them. A snap closure and clear, ID window on the outside means you won't have to worry about losing these valuables. The Card Cubby comes in 16 designs and colors in smooth and pebbled pleather" (so it's "green" too) -- CLEVER! I am very nearsighted, and I wear glasses. I've never been able to adequately apply liquid eye liner. But when I discovered flat liner brushes that let you apply powder "as if" it was a liner, I fell in love. To get the line right, however, flat liner brushes have to be held at an awkward angle to get the powder between your lashes on your lash line. Now, I’ve discovered a new, angled eye liner brush that makes application of a perfect powder lash line, much easier. The GloAngled Eyeliner Brush $15.00 by Glo Minerals is bent at a slight angle, so you can apply powder shadow with the brush right in front of where that color needs to be. It is so simple, and yet, so effective I don’t know how I ever did a decent job without it! GloProfessional brushes are made out of natural animal hair, and are 100% cruelty free The experts at Glo Minerals suggest that you apply a cream eyeliner into the lash line first, then follow to eye shadow to set the cream liner. Either way, you’ll find that you can make a perfect (and fast) line, every time. This little tool is my latest "must-have" and well worth the money.
Recently, I got a new, slim, iPod Nano. And now it is safely nestled into a RockBoom Speaker iPod Case $24.99 by RockBuds. The case is a "clamshell" type, slim enough to keep the Nano from sloshing around, but it does something more: it plays your music out loud. Plug your smaller sized Mp3 player into the built-in, 3.5mm jack and everyone can enjoy what you're listening to. The slim, zippered case literally fits in the palm of your hand, and comes in a couple of prints (camo for unisex, floral on black for the ladies -- called "chicboom") and in always-chic, black. The speaker quality is surprisingly good, with no distortion even at higher sound levels. You'll be delighted with it, as long as you're not expecting concert hall quality sound. And, even if you don't care to use the speakers most of the time, a hard-sided case is just a tiny investment to protect your much larger one.
Everyone knows that fruits are good for the body, but they're also good on your body! I don't mean that you should literally wear fruit, of course. I'm suggesting a hot, new watch: Fruitz watches srp. $225.00, by Philip Stein. Fruitz is a new collection of sporty and colorful watches named after the fruits that inspired the line (e.g.: Watermelon, Coconut, Blueberry, Mulberry, and Papaya). They make a fun fashion statement on their own, but they do something more than just look pretty. Fruitz watches tell time, make a fashion statement and oh yes...they do something else: they offer wearers a sense of well being. The watch employs" Natural Frequency Technology," that "works within the beneficial key frequency of 7-9 hertz, which encompasses the chief resonant frequency of the natural earth." The explanation is going to get more technical from here, so please read the entire description on the Advice Sisters original Blog Post. But here's the point: the Philip Stein web site claims that, in studies, people have reported having better sleep, less stress, clearer focus and better concentration, when wearing Philip Stein watches. I think the watch has a calming influence, although maybe just looking at the watch reminds me to stay calm. In any case, the collection is really gorgeous--full of color just lovely for Spring. Even if you don't feel a heightened since of well-being, you will generate fashion envy. I've gotten lots of admiring glances from mine, the "Mulberry" -black rubber band, white face, black and silver accents).
Nahui Ollin is known for unique products made out of recycled materials. The "fabric" is a woven checkerboard of labels, most often unused soda can labels and candy wrappers, bought from a local factory in Mexico near where the designer, Olga Abadi, lives. Even the fittings are recycled materials, such as leather and suede. Each bag is hand-made, with the larger ones requiring hundreds, and sometimes, thousands, of labels. No two bags are alike, so whatever you get, it's a bona fide original. An inexpensive but fun accessory is the Coin Purse $20.00, perfect to carry small essentials inside a larger tote. If you only carry a few items, such as a credit card, lipstick and keys (and maybe for a condom for planned or unanticipated, romance) it's a perfect party bag. It would also make a memorable way to package a smaller gift. Once you get one, you'll want more, for sure! FOR THE GUYS:
Rapper and entrepreneur, Jay-Z’s Rocawear brand has a user-friendly fragrance that won't just appeal to the hip hop crowd. Rocawear X Diamond Celebration Eau de Toilette $50.00 1.7 fl. oz.; $65.00 3.4 fl. oz. is a unique, sophisticated blend of swagger and savvy.. Top notes include Himalayan Goji berries, pomelo and lime. Mid-tones feature grand lapsang souchoung and eucalyptus with black amber. Bottom notes include sensual guaic and cedarwood. A deep, chocolate colored outer carton is accented with a huge, silver, metallic X in bold and shadow. The bottle inside makes a powerful statement. The rectangular bottle is completely covered with a bold, brushed silver metal that reminds me of a monolith as in "2001 A Space Odyssey." There is nothing to mar the smooth surface other than a large X and "Rocawear" emblazoned on the front. Even the spray diffuser is recessed into the top. You'd think the bottle would be heavy, but the metal coating is actually very light. As to the scent, it's got more sweetness and fruit than I expected, probably from the top notes. But upon drydown, the tea and other notes take their places, making this a distinctive scent that feels masculine, but not in the traditional woodsy/citrus genre. Men who are seeking something "manly" but different, will find this modern, expensive-smelling, bold scent, to be a good choice! Binaca AERO Blast $2.49 isn't just for guys, but I'm willing to bet that it has gotten so many guys through that "first kiss" jitters and first time business meetings, that it's a "must-have" in every man's pocket. Binaca hasn't changed much, it still combats bad breath, but they've changed the packaging. You don't have to shake those drops out of a bottle anymore, and the slim-sized sprays literally blast the good stuff into your mouth and onto your tongue, so you can get cool, fresh breath, quickly and discreetly. Three flavors" peppermint, spearmint, and cinnamon, are appropriately housed in white spray tubes with graphics in blue (peppermint), green (spearmint) and red (cinnamon). Actually, these remind me of dri-erase markers, or big crayons...colorful, but not crazy. Each "canister" contains 250 sprays of breath freshener, and they are sugar free and calorie free. Binaca suggests "double-misting" with more than one flavor. Could be fun, but one spritz is still enough to put the kibosh on bad breath. I have also found that it counter-acts dry mouth...great before you have to go and give a speech. And, while Binaca doesn't actually suggest using their breath spray as an appetite suppressant, once you have a strong taste in your mouth, you are less likely to crave that brownie left by well-meaning co-workers in the coffee room.
There are just some scents that immediately smell like a confident, sexy man. One I've just discovered is Bigelow Barber Cologne Elixir White No. 1585 $19.50 2.5 fl. oz. The bold, black box with silver and white and red accents looks rugged. Inside, there's a ribbed, silver bottle with black spray diffuser top that reminds me of a flask. The white label has a red "1585" that reminds me a bit of the lettering on a mug shot, and there's a silvery logo for Bigelow in the shape of a shield. If you're getting the idea that this is not unisex in any way, shape or form, you're right. C.O. Bigelow's Elixir White 1585 is a scent for a man's man, blending crisp and clean notes of bergamot, grapefruit and mandarin with peppery wood spices. The resulting mix is green, fresh, and exciting, with a hint of pepper coming through on the drydown. It is downright sexy....guys will love it because it reminds them of classic "guy" scents, but it's not "old." It will make women want to snuggle up close, and it is the scent they will associate with falling in love...with you! I can't believe how affordable, but how nice this scent is. There is also Elixir Blue and Elixir Green, and the scent is available in a Hair and Body Wash, too.
The Advice Sisters web site and blog offer impartial, up-close-and-personal product reviews, conducted by expert beauty & fashion reviewer, Alison Blackman Dunham. If other opinions are included in a review, "we" (instead of "I") is used. My Review Philosophy: This beauty, fashion and cosmetics review column is called "What Works" (not what doesn't). I want to direct you to what I think are great products, not denigrate those I didn't like (but you might love). All beauty reviews are subjective. It's my responsibility to describe products in a way that offers information, but allows you to use your own, good judgment about whether to buy it or not. I have tested thousands of products and that gives me a strong background on which to base my comments, but in the end, the decision to try something is yours, alone. A Signature Approach Many online publications and blogs find it easier and more economical to just post photos and press releases of products "as if" they have actually used them, or offer their readers canned reviews someone else has written. The Advice Sisters only post original reviews and comments about products I (or another, qualified, adult reviewer) have actually tried, This approach takes much more time and effort, but it is what distinguishes The Advice Sisters from a lot of others. I know you appreciate the difference. A Note About Compensation: I never have, and never will, write about products using just high resolution photos and press releases, without experiencing the product "in person." These type of "faux" reviews add to the junk and clutter on the Internet, without offering anything substantive or new. In order to write real reviews of real products, however, I use samples provided by a company or a public relations firm. There is no way I could write valid, responsible, up-close-and-personal reviews without them. Sample products and services are not nearly "compensation" for the tremendous amount of effort it takes to write genuine reviews, nor do free samples influence my experienced opinion of products in any Advice Sisters content. I do not use "advertorial" (paid content) and, when I choose to include paid advertisements, they are clearly identifiable.
