Springtime bring so many special occasions: Mothers' Day, Father's Day, graduations, and weddings, just to name a few. Great GIFTS FOR MOMS:
Epilators are one of those "little things" that can make a big difference in how you look. They're beauty helpers that remove unwanted hair on various parts of your body. They remove hair at the root, so your skin is not only smoother, it stays that way, longer. In the old days, epilators worked, but they hurt! But now, Remington, already well known for hair removal tools, has created Smooth & Silky $59.99. This is a 2-speed, two-head, epilator that works on face and body. It has 42 tweezers (for larger areas like legs and arms) and 12 precision size tweezers on a head that removes hair from smaller areas like chin and bikini line It removes hair close, and fast. And the result is smoother and hair-free skin for longer (up to 6 weeks). The entire unit is ergonomically designed to hug the curves of your body. You can use it corded, or cordless. It comes with a little pouch to carry it in, and a 2-year warranty. There was still a bit of a "pinch" as the hair was removed, but this epilator works so fast, you don't have time to be annoyed by it You might think a facial mask isn't a gift idea, but it is, when it's the Phyto-Black Lift Lifting Mask $65.00 2.5 fl. oz. by Shu Uemura. This mask is a luxury that any woman would appreciate. This fresh & herbal smelling, gel-like mask, contains tightening polymers and soybean extract for tightening and smoothing the skin while improving elasticity and fighting against wrinkles. Not to worry, the mask is clear, not black. Key ingredients include: black tea ferment (firms, densifies and detoxifies the skin of impurities); black sugar complex (boosts collagen production while visibly reducing fine lines and wrinkles); litchi shell extract (neutralizes oxidative stress which can accelerate the aging process); Deepsea water (a Shu Uemura signature ingredient, a clean and pure water rich in minerals that helps to naturally provide moisture to the skin); and pro-xylane™ (boosts synthesis of certain GAGs in order to lift and plump the skin while retaining ample moisture. it also has a collagen boosting effect enabling skin to smooth away fine lines and wrinkles). I tried this as I do most products, on one side of my face, first. It looked smoother, fresher, and definitely smoother after just one use. The mask is so pleasant, easy to use, and fast, and you can use it up to 2-3 times a week if you wish. You can feel it tightening as the minutes go past. Although it's meant to be used in tandem with other Shu Uemura Phyto-Black products, it still does a good job on it's own. Simply take a small (cherry size) amount of mask and spread it evenly on your entire face avoiding the eye areas, Wait 3-5 minutes, then tissue or wipe off the remaining mask. Blend in whatever is left, and follow with your hand and (ideally) follow with Shu Uemura products, or your own moisturizer and serums.
Twist & Pout $7; $9.50 w/Lip Clip attachment, is a colorful little orb that look like an oversized marble. Use it as-is, or add a silvery lip clip with a lobster claw clasp that lets you clip the ball to your purse, or belt loop, backpack, or whatever. These colorful balls are not just for show -- they hold a special secret. The containers twist open to reveal a silky, orange-scented and flavored lip balm. The balm is initially sealed with a plastic pull cap to keep it fresh and soft. Once you dip your finger it and smooth it on your lips, you'll see that the clear gloss feels moist, but doesn't look overly shiny (so guys can share it with you). It is, in essence, high quality oils, butters and SPF 20 UVA/UVB protection, along with the natural, citrus flavor. The balm really does hydrate fast and in the end, the cutest packaging in the world won't make me give it high praise, unless the product it contains is equally stellar. When it comes to Twist & Pout, it delivers on all counts! There are tons of cute designs in themes to suit everyone. The company introduces eight new designs every 120 days to reflect the season, and also whatever is trendy at that moment. There are even a few tinted glosses, also with SPF 20. TIP: if you plan to use a lot of different twist and pouts, one Lip Clip will lift off one cap and fit onto another. et a bunch for yourself, and toss a few to mom, and friends, or get them as shower favors (and watch the smiles)! Get a bunch for yourself, and toss a few to mom, and friends, or get them as shower favors (and watch the smiles)! There's nothing better than great makeup tools. They help you apply products more easily, efficiently, and better. But when you're considering a new set of makeup brushes, why not consider making them eco-friendly, too? Gerda Spillmann, known for a nice line of anti-aging cosmetics and Swiss skin care, now has a five piece Makeup Brush Set $24.95 with handles make of eco-friendly bamboo and synthetic bristles made of (cruelty free) Taklon. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet and it also produces more oxygen than a forest of comparable size, It also helps to prevent erosion. Bamboos is degradable, and will regenerate on it's own. It can be grown without pesticides, herbicides or chemicals. What a wonderful plant! Gerda Spilmann's all natural bamboo make-up brush set contains 5 of the most commonly used brushes: Blush Brush ; Eye Shading Brush ; flat powder Eyeliner Brush ; Lash and Brow Groomer ;and a Concealer Brush. They all have full-sized handles that fit neatly into long pockets sewn into a soft, natural colored hemp and cotton brush roll. The set is perfect for travel, and works really well with a Gerda Spillmann cream to powder foundation and cream blush. This set is surprisingly inexpensive ($4.99 per brush) but the brushes are nicely crafted, with generously sized, nicely shaped heads that are solid on the handle bases thanks to recycled aluminum "ferrules." You can't go wrong with this for yourself, and it makes an impressive, thoughtful gift, too.

For a lip gloss lover, there's nothing more lovely than a new collection of colored glosses. The Naked Beauty Lip Gloss Collection by Smashbox will wow you even if you're not crazy over color! Eight, mini-sized, vanilla-scented lip glosses with wanded tops give you just enough product (0.4 fl. oz.) to slip into the teeniest purse, and you'll still have enough sheer gloss to last a few weeks or months, depending upon how much you use it. The glosses for the most part deliver just enough color so you know you're wearing some--but they're still pretty sheer, This well edited selection has just about every color you could ever really want: buff (creamy light peach); Sunkissed (shimmery brown); exposed (creamy light pink); bare (barely there flesh); nude (shimmery nude), naked (shimmery champagne) pure (Creamy rose) and natural (creamy rose). The glosses are luxuriously silky. The set is nicely boxed in an ivory cardboard display with peek-a-boo window showing the glosses all lined up, inside. Who says great things don't come in small packages!
Several years ago, I wandered into the gift shop on a cruise ship, and discovered Bijoux Terner's ten dollar wonders. Bijoux Terner sells trendy accessories: watches, handbags, evening bags, shawls, scarves, belts, sandals, jewelry and more and everything is just $10.00! Fashionable items that cost less than a sandwich and a soda? It didn't seem possible, but it is. In fact, Bijoux Terner is not just sold on cruise ships and airports, they also have some franchise stores as well. If you haven't seen Bijoux Terner displays in an airport, or perhaps in a shopping mall, you have been missing one of the best bargains in fashion accessories. The company's claim to fame is the one, low price, and while you won't find super-premium quality, for $10.00 you can't go wrong. With wedding season coming up, why spent more than $10.00 for an evening bag you may hardly wear again? Read more about Bijoux Terner on the Advice Sisters Blog.
Caldrea specializes in luxurious, fabulously scented, aromatherapy products, with an extensive line offering everything from candles to household cleaners, to hand lotions, to household gift sets. The earth-friendly products use plant-derived ingredients and natural essential oils. They're also biodegradable and not tested on animals. The company has an upscale collection and just recently introduced a more modestly priced "Essential Collection" available exclusively at Target stores. The dozens products in the initial collection (home ambience, and home keeping) are similar in formula to their pricier line, but with different packaging and scents: Home Ambience: Citron Ginger (grapefruit, ginger, and basil): Water Lily (jasmine and cedar leaf); Pomegranate (cassis, rose and palmarosa); White Birch (sandalwood, lemon, and parsley); and Cypress Leaf (cypress, sage and violet leaf) and home keeping: Olive Oil (coriander and cedar leaf); Herbs de Provence (rosemary, thyme and sage); and Citron Ginger (grapefruit, ginger and basil). The more upscale line has a new scent with real, unisex appeal: "Sandalwood Riceflower." It's a classic chypre, featuring a citrus accord with subtle floral notes and sophisticated woods and white moss. Just like a fine fragrance in a perfume bottle, Caldrea’s Sandalwood Riceflower starts with top notes of bergamot, riceflower and mandarin. The heart is floral: lavender, rosebud, and cedarwood, and the drydown has sandalwood, patchouli and amber. The smell is spicy, with just the merest hint of herbal-lavender and a lot of sexy woods. The best part is that if you love it (and I really do) you can get it in a dizzying variety of products. I’ve noticed that in the past few years, even though guys are still claiming they’re not all that interested in skincare, they seem to get very excited every time I present a new, scented hand or body cream (guy: how is that not skincare?). Check out both collections for great gifts for girls or guys!
Lolita went out on a girl’s night out with some dear friends in 2001 and, as the story goes, she thought the glasses they were drinking their cosmos from, were boring. Boring glasses inspired her to start hand-painting and selling unique glassware out of her basement. The designs commemorate special moments and personalities in life such as this wedding goblet. A cute touch is that each has a drink recipe or little message, on the bottom. The variety of products is dizzying! The Lolita line also includes a new textile line of PJs, Robes, Aprons, beach towels, bath towels, bathroom accessories, outdoor party ware, soy candles...and more. You've just got to visit the web site (see The Advice Sisters May/June Shopping Guide) and check out all the special things that will make your special mom, smile. Ready for flip flop weather? Switch Flops $32.00 to $42 (and $10.00 for additional pairs of straps) by Lindsay Phillips lets you take one pair of flip flops and create a totally different look every time you wear them. The original Switch-Flops has velcro lined straps so you can pull off one design, just stick on another. There are three different shoe styles, four different colors, and more than 60 different straps to choose from. Choose a wedges, flats, and/or a kitten heel. If you love them, you can even get them in kiddy-sizes for your children. But now there are Switch Flops like the Jordi srp. $24.00 with a decorative snap "button" on the top. It comes with a plastic dome studded with rhinestones, but you can get different ones for as little as $12.00. Simply pull one off, and snap a different one, on- the heavy duty snaps stay snug! And, of course, in the original SwitchFlop Designs. Read more and see more on the Advice Sisters Blog.
The Motormouse $49.95 is seriously cute. It is available in red, silver and black. This little car drives me absolutely wild! It makes even a dull day, more fun, and makes a perfect gift for mother's day, father's day, a new grad, or for just about anyone You may be wondering whether it's a real car, well, not really! It's a cordless, computer mouse that cordless computer mouse, although it is inspired by the Porsche 9-11. The 2.4g wireless mouse with 1200DPI optical sensor glides over a mouse pad, fits in the palm of your hand, and has luxe features like rubber wheels with silver trim, headlights and taillights and a trunk that opens (the "trunk" is where you put the two, AAA batteries that fuel the car). The unit comes with a small receiver you plug into a USB port on your computer. There is no software, no wires, and no start-up at all. Simply plug in the receiver, put the batteries in the Motormouse, and you're ready to "hit the road." You even get an energy saving, specially coated mouse pad and a velvety, drawstring pouch (the "garage" for your car when you're not using it). This is great for moms, dads, grads, anyone!
Yak Pak handbags, totes, messengers, backpacks and
accessories, are really affordable, with most under $35.00. But
that doesn't mean if you chose a Yak Pak you'll be sacrificing
quality. All the bags are very well appointed, rugged, well finished (no
frayed edges or cheap hardware) and the styles are trendy. You even get
a lifetime guarantee.
FABULOUS FRAGRANCES:
"Hot" and "fever" seem to be
buzz words for designer fragrances these days. Getting
in on the sexy vibe is Avon's U by Ungaro
Fever Eau de Parfum $34.001.7 oz / 50 ml. a sequel
to U by Ungaro for her and for him by Avon, that
the Advice Sisters reviewed in the
Fall 2008 What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review
column, Ungaro Fever for Her, moves the original
fragrance to a more sensual level. The outer packaging
is a peachy, graduated, peach metallic, subtly embossed with
the Ungaro logo of conjoined “U’s”. The
fragrance, developed by Honorine Blanc, a Master
Perfumer at Firmenich, has top notes are raspberry,
mandarin, and Chinese osmanthus, with a heart of lychee
flower, rose absolute and white honeysuckle, and a drydown of
sensual notes including sleek amber, patchouli, sandalwood and
sensual musk. The fruit shines through in the beginning
as expected, in U by Ungaro for Her, it was the florals
that peek through as a surprise in the drydown. In Ungaro
Fever for Her, it's the spices mixed with just a tiny nod
of the flowers, in the drydown. This is a sensual,
spicy, very feminine scent, but it's not so heavy you can't
wear it in the daytime. Even the clear, glass bottle exudes
sex appeal: a very curvy, draped column of glass shaped
like a woman's body, allowing the peach tinted juice shine
through, making the bottle almost a mannequin for one of
Emanuel Ungaro’s sophisticated, couture dresses. I like
the scent...a lot. Avon has done such a good job
of attracting world class perfumers and designers to create
sophisticated fragrances for men and women that are actually,
affordable. This one smells like it should cost much more. And
it's well balanced, neither too heavy, nor too insignificant.
This will be a new favorite for 20 to 40-something woman who
wants to show her feminine side, but still be powerful.
It would make a wonderful mother's day gift, or a special
fragrance just because.
CK one Summer $44.00 Eau de Toilette
spray 3.4 fl oz/100ml is a bright and happy fragrance, a succulent
blend of citrus in a citrus orange and yellow bottle. It
begins fresh and fruity with top notes of pear, mandarin and kaffir lime
leaves. The heart is light and watery: violet leaves, crisp verbena and
water lily. But the drydown is a surprise: a light touch of vetiver,
patchouli and cedarwood that instantly subdues the fruits and flowers,
making it more masculine in feeling. This scent makes everyone
happy. The CK One Summer bottle reminds me of an old-time elixir
bottle, with a spray diffuser presented alongside the bottle and not in
it. This bottle has been re-imagined from the original CK One,
for summer, with a coppery top and gradated packaging of orange and
yellow, along with a sun glare graphic design on both carton and
bottle, reminiscent of the sun's rays. CK One Summer is a
limited edition that is perfect for Mother's Day, Father's Day, a new
graduate, or for yourself as a light, Summer scent. But like
Summer, it's only here for a short time! Stock up now.
Eternity by Calvin Klein has gone
through many different versions since the original was introduced in
1998. The original is a blend of spice, flowers and exotic fruits,
combined with patchouli and amber, but for Summer 2010, the fragrance
lightens up. Calvin Klein ETERNITY Summer
Eau
de
Parfum
spray 3.4 fl oz/100ml is $54..00, re-imagines the spicy scent as a
light, watery floral that still has that signature hint of spice and
"spunk." It opens with tangy notes of grapefruit, ginger and passion
flower, but the floral, mid notes are almost immediately apparent: a
beautiful bouquet of water
florals
with pink peony, freesia and
muguet.
Nicely blended into this mix are a subtle mix of musks, white amber and
driftwood. Eventually, the scent becomes more fruity floral again. It
has a light touch, but it also has staying power - pleasing, luxurious,
and perfect for daytime. For women who like their scent to stick around
but want the effect to be subtle, will adore this new, limited edition,
What hasn't changed is the ETERNITY signature
flacon
with "T" shaped all-in-one top and spray diffuser that feels substantial
and nice in your hand. The outer packaging, however, wears it's Summer
clothing: a background featuring a scene of pink and lavender
ocean waves, lightly enveloping the sand. The soft pink and lavender
color palette is supposed to remind you of the light at sunrise. The
same on the bottle, makes for a pretty display on your dressing
table. It makes a lovely Mother's Day gift, or a nice choice for a
bridal fragrance.
Original
Chloé has always been one of my favorite scents, ever since a
former love secreted a bottle into the pocket of my raincoat when I
wasn't looking. The gesture, and the scent, has always enchanted me. But
Chloé has re-envisioned itself with new product since that time.
An exciting, new idea for Chloé is a trio of "splash" fragrance
colognes called "Eau de Fleurs" $103.00 US/each.
They are perfect for casual and warmer weather wear: Capucine
(nasturtium), Lavande (lavender) and Néroli. They're not meant for shy
dabbing on pulse points. Splashes are light, so you can layer
them, and splash them with enthusiasm. I love the bottles: large chunks
of clear, rectangular glass that let the tints of the "juice" shine
through (Neroli/gold, Capucine (green) and Lavande (light lemon). Each
bottle has the name "Eau De Fleurs" and the fragrance, in black letters
on the front. Each is topped with a shiny cube of silver metal into
which the Chloé logo is embossed covering the spray diffuser.
Even the outer box is elegant and modern, but minimalistic: a clean,
hard-sided, white cardboard cube, marked only by a wash of beige for the
embossed, Chloé logo in the front (and even lighter in the back
of the carton), and the name of the fragrance in a small, black, letters
on the front.

If you want to give someone special a
stunning, designer original, you can't do better than Balenciaga
Paris Eau de Parfum Eau de Parfum 1.7 oz: SRP $95.00 and a 2.5 oz: Eau
de Parfum Spray $130.00. Even the creamy, outer carton is chic. The
clear, glass bottle has four facets, and is gently curved --a "bell
jar" that is elliptical, not round. It is the perfect place to capture
the pale, amber "juice" of the fragrance. on the top is a collar of
ivory with the fragrance's name in small, black letters, and atop it, an
ivory ball that looks like cracked marble. The flacon is swathed in a
black, drawstring bag, making it a precious jewel. Like the packaging,
the fragrance, developed by perfumer Olivier Polge is also
elegant but modern. This fragrance is classified as a "floral chypre" and
features violet leaves, cedar and patchouli. The floral notes of violet
and carnation are the standouts, but there is a hint of peppery spice
and even, a powdery aspect, in the drydown. I couldn't get a total
breakdown of all of the notes, but basically there are: top notes of
pepper and green notes, a heart of floral notes (violet, Violet leaves,
carnation) and base notes of woods, plus some musks and patchouli. There
is a lot that is familiar but with new twists. The vibe is fresh
and green, and with the additional of the base notes, mystery and
modernity in it, too. This is a lovely scent, and it's worth the
investment if you're seeking a new signature!

HEALTHY, STYLISH HAIR HELPERS:
Bouncy hair and hair with lots of texture
is seen on every runway, and on red carpets. But to get those
looks, you need the right products. Redken has a trio of new stylers
that help re-texture your hair to make these looks, happen. My
fave is the Wool Shake 08 Gel-Slush Texturizer $17.00 3,4 oz.
It gives you volume at the surface, where you really need it.
The product name got my attention and love, before I ever tried it (I
mean, who doesn’t love wooly sheep)? The “slush-like” gel comes in a
plastic, pump bottle. It needs to be shaken (not stirred), When it
leaves the bottle, it becomes a gel that adds extreme volume and
texture, without being sticky or hard. Also inspired by the runway and
to compliment professional cuts is Matte Sponge O5 $17.00 1.7 oz.
It's a blue tinted “sponge-like” product in a jar that adds separation
with a roughed-up finish, to make even “mom hair” look more edgy. All
you need is a tiny bit of this product, smoothed throughout dry or
damp hair from roots to ends. And for a better blow dry, and bouncy
volume, there’s a new Redken product in a flip-top tube: Velvet
Gelatine 07 Cushioning Blow-Dry Gel. $17.00 3.4 oz. Smooth it on
damp hair and…blow dry for bouncier hair. The light gel will simply
melt into your hair, giving you a much better blow dry with bouncy
hair you might not believe is really yours! All of these bring out the
best in your haircut, and in your look! Sebastian’s Volupt line volumizes,
without making your hair crazy/wild. The collection includes a shampoo,
conditioner, and Volumizing Spray featuring “Cushion Particle
Technology.” Without getting too technical, this is the fusion of
two polymers (Sipernate, and Microthene) that work together to create
volume that's soft, and not stiff ( no "helmet head," here). The
shampoo and conditioner are both 3.45 fl, oz, and are packaged in
unusually shaped columns of plastic, with flip-top caps. The Shampoo is
in the black bottle, the Conditioner, in a white one, That may
seem like a little thing, but some people really don't see well in the
shower (I have accidentally, and more than once, squeezed conditioner on
my hair when I meant to pick up the shampoo). Color-coding the
bottles makes it even easier to know which one you're picking up.
The spray gel (actually, it's a clear liquid gel) is of course, an
after-shampoo product that you can use at the roots only as a root
boosters (the way I'm using it), or all over. These products can
all be used daily. I thought they were good, although volumizing
isn't something I choose to need every day. But if you do,
these products will do the job--up to 75% more volume than without
the products claims the press literature. I didn't measure it,
but if you're looking for volume and bounce, and softness....you've
found your trio of must-have, treats!
Conair Infiniti Instant Heat CS33 Ceramic
Hair Straightener srp. $59.99 has everything you'd ever want in
a flat iron, and then some. That's a pretty bold statement, but I love
this tool! While there is a model with
1" plates (CS31TX- $54.00) the Model CS33Fx $59.99 with large, 1 1/2" wide
plates won me over, since it really works well for long hair, or a lot
of
hair, or both. The 100% tourmaline coated, ceramic plates glide easily
across hair and reduce stress on your hair follicles, while infrared
energy protects your hair and adds shine, while reducing frizz. The
flat iron has a silver, ergonomic grip, and extra long, floating
plates that head up fast in four heat settings, all the way up
to a very hot, 446 degrees TIP: don't use high heat
settings without a protectant spray. This flat iron bulldozed it's way through my
thick, frizzy, hair like a steamroller, flattening it in one
pass (and thereby avoiding additional heat damage). The lighted power switch and heat
control settings are on the side, easy to access and to see. There is
also an auto on/off in case you leave the iron on (this is a major
plus)! You get a professional style swivel line cord and a five
year limited warranty, plus a soft-sided heat pouch. I am really
impressed with this flat iron. Even better, instead of boring old
black, mine was in deep, shiny fuchsia. The 1" model is in beautiful
teal. What more could you ask for? I'm also crushing on the Infiniti
by Conair Professional Nano Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron $24.99
(PHOTO)
in amber, black, amber, purple and teal, and in four barrel
sizes from 3/4" to 1 1/2." I tried the large, 1 1/2" size, that
makes soft, loose waves and curls, and also did an awesome job of
turning the ends under on my straight, long layers. The nano
tourmaline ceramic technology helps keep hair soft, shiny and
frizz-free, and four heat levels from 310 degrees to a high of 395
degrees means there's enough power to work with any type of hair, even
wigs. The handle has a nice, silvery grip, and the controls light up,
and are on the front, where you can see them easily, The unit comes
with a plastic "cone" that is a protective heat shield, so you can
safely leave it on the counter or floor after you're done, while it's
cooling off. There is a pro-style swivel cord and more importantly, an
auto on/off in case you forget and leave it plugged in, and on.
You'll get a limited, five year warranty, too. And if you need a new
hair dryer, the Conair Infiniti Cord Keeper Tourmaline Ceramic
Ionic Hair Dryer $34.99 comes in beautiful colors: amber, red, teal and purple. This
1875 watt dryer not only dries hair fast, the tourmaline ceramic
technology works on hair molecules from the inside as well as the
outside, helping to dry your hair super-fast. Because the drying
process is fast, it is also gentle to hair and minimizes heat damage,
while keeping hair less frizzy and silkier. Sounds too good to be
true? Well, it isn't! Other benefits are the cord that
retracts into it's handle (who wants to have cords lying all around)?
There is a cool shot button to seal in a style, a remove-able filter
for easier cleaning, 3 heat and 2 speed settings, and controls that
are easily marked and viewable right on the handle. You'll get a
nozzle and a diffuser nozzle, too. The dryer is a bit weighty,
but since it works fast, you won't be lifting it that long. This is
definitely a good, pro-style dryer, and the colors make it even
better. All of these hair tools are rugged and well made. They look and perform as if they were much more expensive, but they are all
so amazingly affordable. Treat yourself, and at these prices,
you can afford to give mom a gift of one, two or all three, as well.
I didn't know that L'Oreal had a
green initiative, but their Serie Nature line of hair care
products from L'Oréal Professional are designed to minimize the
effect of products on the environment. Who Knew?! And isn't it great?!
There are four different collections, consisting simply of a shampoo,
and a hair "Masque" (conditioner). All the products in this line are
infused with naturally derived ingredients, and targeted to specific
hair types. The products don't just protect the environment around us,
they protect your hair, too. I like the packaging: recyclable and in
some cases, made with recycled materials. If you want to support
"green" initiatives, and you want natural products, this is a line
you'll want to know more about. I tried almost all of these products,
and blogged about them.

The H2Pro Presto Flat Iron
$180.00 is seriously impressive! There are plenty of flat irons
out there with great, ceramic plates and nano-technology to help
smooth, silken and shine hair while reducing frizz. And there are flat
irons that reach 450 degrees so you can style hair quickly without
causing serious heat damage. But the Presto Turbo Style 1 1/4"
Presto Flat Iron from H2Pro has all of that, and
more, to really make it a standout. For starters, it is 1 1/4" wide,
not the standard, 1". If you have a lot of hair, and long hair, this
"little bit extra" make a big difference in the ease and efficiency
with which you can style your hair. This H2Pro Flat Iron also has a
turbo trigger,--a "power shot" for an extra burst of powder when you
need it, for quicker and more precise styling. Every time the Presto 1
¼" Flat Iron is clamped, this turbo trigger is released. It's
pretty amazing! There is so much to talk about that I
suggest you take a moment to

Really coarse and curly hair needs special
TLC. Luckily, Mizani products are targeted to the
needs of naturally curly hair. Their True Textures addresses the unique
characteristics of each curl type, with specific products to meet
individual needs, such as moisture, frizz control, and curl
definition. Apparently, curly hair grows in spiral, ribbon-like structures that
inhibit natural oils from reaching the ends, making the hair dry,
fragile, and less shiny than other types of hair. The True Textures
line by Mizani has a triple-action, "Curl Care" complex that adds
moisture and helps make this type of hair more bouncy, and protected
against breakage. The line has five products. I like the sulfate
free Shampoo $16.00 8.5 fl. oz; that is color safe and keeps hair
feeling soft and light, It also detangles, very well. Ditto the
Curl Replenish Intensive Moisturizing Masque $18.00 that
makes a great, weekly treat and treatment for very dry hair. If you
want a multi-tasker there's the Cleansing
Cream Conditioning Curl Wash $14,00 8.5 fl. oz. It's a mild
cleanser with conditioner built right in. It was gentle, and effective,
and good when you don't need as much heavy
duty conditioning, but still want some. There are also two styling
products: a Perfect Curl Defining Cream Gel for loose curls and waves,
and a Moisture Stretch Curl Extender for coiled to extremely
tight styles to define highly textured strands so that each
spiral looks shiny and touchable. Obviously, this line has a specific audience
of people who have naturally curly hair or multi-textured hair.
Dry hair doesn’t always look healthy, and
it can be flyaway and hard to manage. But Nexxus has a few
products that can help turn dry hair around. For example, the
Nexxus Salon Hair Care Humectress Hydrating Treatment $14.99 5.5 oz.
is a once-a-week treat. Use it instead of your normal conditioner, and
help really replenish moisture and help to strengthen dry hair, It has
oils and avocado and honey extracts, to deep condition, and help
reduce breakage, while fighting frizz. The rich cream feels luxurious,
and has a fruity scent, but the real bonus is shinier, silkier hair
that looks great and won't feel coated. If you also crave a volumizer,
one I like that protects and strengthens with the heat of your hair
dryer is Nexxus Thermal Volume Volumizing Heat Protection Mousse
$10.55 7 fl. oz. The pump top is curved and spiked like a talon,
dispensing a host of great for your hair ingredients including
NEXXUSSPHERE technology. This provides time-released
nutrients, antioxidants and UV protectors, offering up to 80% more
volume for up to 24 hours. Extracts of blueberry seed, grape
seed, and lyceum fruit, plus passion flower oil, silicone and
conditioning agents and silk amino acids, help make volume, happen.
After about a day, my hair felt a bit heavy, but the volume was still
there. I liked the Sleek Finish Frizz Taming Silkening Lotion
$10.55 3.2 fl. oz. bottle in a pump bottle even better. A
pea-sized amount on wet hair, worked through and then styled with a
brush and blow dryer, makes for smooth and shiny hair/ On dry
hair, you can fight frizz by rubbing a pea-sized amount between your
palms and then running your hands through the under layer of hair,
them smoothing the surface. Use just a little (I used too much and my
hair needed a wash sooner than normal) and enjoy the same ingredients
as in the Volumizer. As pro-style products go, these are effective, and affordable! Streekers $10.95 is a truly
temporary hair color that adds pops of color to your hair --but only for
the moment. It washes out with your next shampoo, so you can get wild
tonight, mild, tomorrow for work. Lipstick-style tubes with sponge-tip
applicator tops, dispense yellow, purple, blue, orange, yellow, red,
green, ultra violet, and even pink color that you just "paint" on. You
can use it over hair styling products like mousse, gel or wax, and even
hair spray. Even better, you'll be able to brush your hair after the
product dries, and it won't flake off or stain your clothes. But when
you want to remove it, simply shampoo...and it's gone! There are so many
possibilities for these, from bridal parties painting a "highlight" that
goes with the bride's color scheme, to kids wearing school colors to
prom. Add a few strands of color, or more, and make a statement
you won't have regrets about, later on.
If you want to make a big impression with something
really small, try Bling Strands, tiny shreds of
light-reflecting, metallic, polyester fiber not much thicker than a
human hair, that bring bling to your hair in a whole, new way. These
glittery strands become a part of your hairstyle, and can last for a
few hours (until you remove them) or for a few days or weeks, until
they finally fall out with the hair strands they're attached to. Once
they're attached, you can shower and shampoo with them, even use a
blow dryer or flat iron (up to 400 degrees). There
are 30 colors in brights and pastels. On the Bling Strands Web Site
*see the Advice Sisters Shopping Guide on Page Two of this Column,
you can see all the available colors, watch a video about how to
affix bling strands, and there's also a gallery of looks to inspire
you. It looks complicated, at first, but all you're really doing is
tying in each Bling Strand with knots, to one strand of your
own hair. You can do this yourself, although it can get pretty tiring.
The best way is to have an extra set of hands, so enlist the help of a
friend, or have your stylist put them in, professionally.

FOR THE GUYS:
Put your best face forward with the Remington 8-in-1 Personal Grooming
System (PG-360) $19.99. This isn't just any groomer, it
has every "bell & whistle" he might need: wide trimmer, fine trimmer, and 16 different comb lengths to
precisely tailor facial hair. It also stays compact and ready for use
in it's own, nice stand. Our male reviewer said it was not only so
efficient he didn't have to run the groomer over his face (or head)
twice, it was super-quiet. He reported a close shave without any
irritation, too. When you're using an electric shaver,
that's really important, especially if you don't use any shave
products or shave oil (made to be compatible with electric shavers),
Add to that an ergonomic handle that our reviewer said allowed him to
have a comfortable, natural grip that didn't tire him out.
Remington has created a grooming system that every guy will love.
It's a practical and coveted Father's Day gift (every guy needs to
groom his beard some time). This one is affordable, and yet,
excellent. He will look better and streamline his otherwise
routine, grooming chores.
The gift of good skin is something he won’t re-gift or return. Kyoku

special guy the opportunity to know what women have learned long ago:
looking great isn't just "luck." This company makes products just for
guys, using traditional, Japanese ingredients, inspired by a town
where most residents have long life and exceptionally great looking
skin. It's the way, the path...to great skin! You can buy
products separately, but pull out all the stops and get him the
Kyoku

Gift Box $120.00 As you can see from the photo at the

out. The re-useable,
magnetic, hard-sided, matte, black , cardboard box folds upon on each
side to reveal a quartet of full sized skin care products (at 20% off
their individual prices), to give him an easy to use, effective, skin

originally reviewed Derek Jeter Driven by AVON in our
November 2006 What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column
, We were fans back then (or the man, and his
scented toiletries and cologne) and now we're happy to review
Derek Jeter Driven Sport Eau de Toilette $22.50 2.5 oz. by Avon,
The fragrance starts with top notes of mint, lemon zest, and
juniper, followed by crisp apple, and herbal rosemary and sage
leaves. The drydown is very classic and masculine: cedarwood,
sheer musk and sandalwood. The fragrance is classified as a woody
green fougère, and it really has a light, clean, fresh, manly
scent. What I like so much about this one is that it isn't
for young hipsters, or their dads...it appears appropriate for any
guy at any age. The outer packaging is a simple , dark blue,
with "Driven Sport " emblazoned on the front in bold, medium blue
letters. The bottle itself is a rugged, slightly elliptical
rectangle, with "Sport" embossed across the front, and "Derek
Jeter Driven" on the bottom, right hand side of the bottle.
The cap is a smooth, simple, light and dark blue. The effect
is neither too chic, nor too old. By the way, the cologne,
really lasts. One spray and he's good all day.
Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey's second
collaboration with Avon is called Patrick Dempsey 2
$35.00 2.5 fl. oz. "Unscripted" was Mr. Dempsy's first
scent, and the herbal, clean fragrance was a hit, even with who
didn't care in the least about the hunky actor. Patrick Dempsey
2 is also light and clean, but more oriental citrus and
spice, than herbal. The top notes are: mandarin, saffron and
nutmeg, followed by mid notes of spiced wood accord, green fig and
citrus. The base notes (and they're fairly airy on the nose) are
olibanum, patchouli, guaicwood and skin musk. The soft, brown
outer carton and brown glass bottle (with a hint of sage green)
have a shape that is supposed to reflect strength and intimacy. To
quote Patrick: "2 is about possibility. It represents the
intimacy and strength of two individuals coming together with
endless possibilities." Whatever, Patrick! What you
need to know is that! Patrick Dempsey 2 will appeal to guys
as well as their ladies, and this everyday fragrance smells
delicious, and it's affordable. Spring for the shave gel,
moisturizer and face wash for Father's Day along with the cologne.
Redken for Men Clean Spice 2-in-one Conditioning Shampoo $12.00 10
oz. was a surprise for our male reviewer, who initially said: "all
shampoos are alike." Guys don't generally get excited about
shampoo, but this one did get that reaction! This is a 2-in-1
conditioning shampoo that is enriched with scalp and hair benefits
such as fortifying protein, and essential wood oils. Our guy
said he smelled: chocolate and key lime pie, but the aromatherapy
notes are actually: cedar wood, sandalwood, red woods, polished
leather, and sparkling ginger. Little things mean a lot to guys. The
directions suggest massaging the product into scalp and hair for a
minute to get a building sensation of warmth. Our guy didn't notice
this benefit, but he loved the formula, reporting that foamed nicely
and washed clean without any residue. This is a guy who normally
wouldn’t use conditioner, but he noticed the results and didn't have
to do anything extra. The conditioners helped to strengthen hair and
keep frizz under control (yes, guys get it, too) but amazingly, the
product didn’t make hair greasy as the day wore on. He even mentioned
the copper colored plastic bottle with black, flip top lid that he
said made it easy to identify (among his significant other’s wide
array of bathroom bottles). The product is geared towards
sophisticated business types who want luxury and aromatherapy in their
daily routine, and joins Redken Mint Clean (for active and
sporty), and Redken Go Clean (for laid back and easy going).
Any one (or all three to satisfy his various moods) make a great gift
PCA SKIN’s medical grade products incorporate the high tech

color additives, synthetic fragrances, harsh alcohols, comedogenic
oils and other known sensitizers, so they’re great for sensitive skin,
and for people with specific skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis,
hyper pigmentation, rosacea and fine lines and wrinkles. There's a line
of products just for men: PCA® MEN,. It is a edited
collection of products. One that our guys gave two thumbs up to is the
Total Wash Face & Body Cleanser $18.00 6 fl. oz. . The black,
flip-top tube holds a nicely foaming face and body cleanser to keep
his skin smooth, clear and free from irritation caused by shaving. Our
guys liked the light scent, and the foam (why do guys always associate
something that foams, with “it’s working”? ) He may be enjoying the
product, without realizing that it also has real skin benefits:
antioxidants and antibacterial ingredients blended with gentle
cleansing agents, that create an effective yet calming wash suitable
for all skin types. Some key ingredients include Aloe Barbadensis Leaf
Juice and Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil to soothe and
moisturize. *note: the photo here doesn't show the new packaging
which is a more traditional, flip tube instead of this rounded one.

MAGICAL MAKEUP:
Get Your Bronze On is a lovely collection of makeup from Elizabeth
Arden to get your glow, this Spring and Summer. The collection has a

helps to even out my complexion. It comes in four shades and has lots of

check out photos and details on the Advice Sisters Blog The key to long lasting lipstick and well defined
lips is a great lip pencil. A good one, applied in a
complimentary tone to your lip color, defines your lips, and keeps
color from feathering into those tiny cracks and crevices around
your lips (never a good look). Applied under your lip color,
it will not only make your lipstick last longer, it can also
subtly change the tone. For example, a brown pencil under red,
makes it warmer. A beige pencil under a pastel, softens the color
even more. Shu Uemura has great cosmetics,
What could be more exciting than Paris in the Springtime? If you (or that special "mom") longs to be " dans Paris romantique," perhaps the next, best thing, is to have a collection of Paris-themed baked eye shadows from Bourjois, from the limited edition, exclusive-at-Ulta, eye shadow collection, called: “Rendez-vous a Paris" srp. $14.00. French artist and illustrator Nathalie Lete, has created gorgeous, full color, romantic scenes of Paris on the top of the now-iconic, Bourjois compact, illustrating eight, specific attractions in Paris. They are mini-postcards that you can carry around with you and wear (so cute, and so chic!). Included among the eight new colors are: Beige Rose with a little snippet of the map from the Rue Honore featuring a creamy beige eye shadow perfect for Spring pastels. I also love: Noir Precieux, a purple-black shimmer with a view of the Seine, Beige Rose a nude highlighter with a view of Paris, central in a fanciful “map”, Argent, a blue/grey iridescent with the Opera Garnier on the lid, and Violet Absolu, featuring the Place Vendome. All of these work well with all complexions and eye colors, and., of course, they’re long lasting and stay true to color -- lovely to look at, great to use, wonderful to wear. TIP: tie a bunch of these pretty eye shadows into a silk scarf (French, of course) and give mom a very special treat on her special day. Add more "chic-ness" (think: Liz Taylor in Cleopatra), with one of the blackest, sexiest liquid liner "pens" ever: Liner Feutre $17.00 features a thin, soft-tipped sponge/brush tip that lets you "paint" a thick or thin line that will last for hours. Finally, frame eyes with a fantastic fringe, with 1001 Lashes Mascara $17.00. This inky-black mascara is applied via a patented, double helix brush that looks like a kinky spring, with a dozen rows of short and long bristles that evenly every one of your lashes. The formula has natural waxes, vitamin E and C, and it's gentle enough to be used on sensitive eyes. You can't beat it!
Some women dream of the latest "it" bag, but me, a confirmed makeup-aholic, I dream of the latest, face in a case palettes. A new one I love, is Skinn by Dimitri James Face in A Case Little Black Book of Look SO Pretty Collection $45.00. Inside a long, wallet-sized moc-croc, shiny black compact with magnetic closure, is a treasure-trove of high quality cosmetics with everything (and I really mean, everything) to make up your face: a translucent powder. two blushes (pink & peach), two concealers with moisturizing, shea butter (warm a cool medium), a dozen lip colors from red to brown, two silky, shiny, lip glosses (clear and sheer pink), a dozen eye shadows in matte and metallic, blue to brown, and two gel liners in black, and navy, plus three applicators and an interior mirror! The colors are blend-able, and intense. Even better, the products are talc-free, and feature anti-aging, collagen-boosting peptides to help your skin look better and be better! In my book, this is a fabulous kit! It's a delight for those who love color, but it's also a great gift for a woman who travels. and for "Mom" on her special day. This kit is affordable enough to get one for yourself, and it will be a great investment in good looks for year round!
I love Avon's lipsticks. They keep coming up with even more unique, high-tech products that look good, perform well, make everyone woman feel pretty and impress, for less. For example, their Ultra Color Rich Mega Impact Lipstick $8.00 offers bold, bright, incredibly rich color. The silky lipstick arrives in a voluptuous, shiny black tube with silver collar. Inside the lipstick is faceted like a chapel window, to make application precise. The formula delivers incredible color thanks to Avon's "Chromapixel Technology, reflecting light and enhancing shine to amplify each shade’s true hue, and iridescent pearls, that make lips pouty, not "pearly." The lipstick is also kind to lips with a moist feel. If that isn't already enough for your money, the formula also gives you some daily protection from the sun's damaging rays, by offering SPF 15. There are 10 shades from pinks and red, berry, wine, plum, coral, mauve, nude, and mocha. These colors are intense, but easy to wear. There will be more than one you want...and at this price, you can afford them! They're a steal! Mark Cosmetics always manage to take the trends and translate them, for less. For example, the Hook Up Super Color Lip Gloss $6.00 gives you pretty lip color with lots of high shine. The press literature says the product gives you full coverage, but we think it's more a semi-opaque formula. It will give you more color than a gloss, but it is less intense than an opaque lipstick. This gloss is fragranced with spearmint oil, and has conditioners to help keep your lips soft. It is available in five colors: Fever (red), Pop (pink), Thrill (brown), Wild (plum) and Rush (coral). That's enough to cover you (pun intended) for all the warmer months ahead. Of course, since this is a "hook up" item, you can choose another color to stick on the other end of the black, hook up piece, or add another hook up item as you wish *available May 19, 2010 Also debuting this month (May 21, 2010) is a nifty Eye Primer $8.00. We love this! The sheer, tinted, creamy, eye primer comes in light to medium, or medium to dark I love, love, love this! The primer can be used on lids, or under eyes, or in place of a favorite eyeshadow, for a natural look. Even better, used under your fave eye colors it will help them to last and stay fresh all day, and prevent creasing. The product is fragrance free, oil free, and allergy tested. I have freckles on my eyelids which always muddy whatever color I want to apply. Both of these conceal the freckles very well without being sticky or heavy. The light to medium can be used as a highlighter, and it brightens and helps keep light colors true. The medium to dark helps dark shadows to stay put (I like this one as a nude for my lids as-is, too). Both can be used to conceal dark shadows, and they smooth on with a fingertip. They're definitely must-haves you'll want --sure to be sell-out for MARK, so get yours asap!
Instant Age Rewind® Radiant Firming Makeup Srp. $9.99 by Maybelline debuted as a sneak peek around holiday time, but this creamy foundation with SPF 18 is perfect for now through the Summer months, too. There is Goji berry and caffeine to visibly improve the condition of your skin, while you get some firming action. Even better, the product comes in light, medium and dark in a dozen color choices. I am not a fan of liquid foundations in screw top glass vials, but I'll make an exception for this foundation, because I really like the semi-opaque to full coverage formula, and the way it evens out your complexion without any extra effort. I could feel a slight, firming effect, and even better, the foundation is super light in feel, thanks to a water-in-silicone formula. Micro pearls give a radiant (not overly dewy or shiny) glow, and the Vitamin E plus whatever other magic Maybelline works, keeps this foundation from fading away, all day. Personally, my all time favorite (and Fashion Week must-have) is Maybelline's Instant Age Rewind Eraser srp. $9.99 (photo). The delivery system is a plastic, click-it with a "micro-corrector applicator", a sponge dome that gives you an all-in one-clean way to apply the product. The Eraser is also protected with an anti-microbial system. Unlike most applicators, you don't have to wash this one to clean it, just wipe off excess foundation with a dry tissue. But the foundation, in a dozen color choices, wows me. It's semi-opaque, lightweight and smooth. The applicator smoothes imperfections on skin's surface, while a "treatment" of a super-concentrated formula with Goji Berry and Collagen) tightens & improves skin elasticity. SPF 18 Sunscreen helps protect skin from sun damage . The foundation lasts for hours as-is, all day and into the evening, if you use a primer, first. It is amazing, and affordable, and my new go-to whenever I know I'll need to look my best without the ability to touch-up. If you're one of those people who just refuses to wear sunscreen on a regular basis, wearing a great foundation or tinted moisturizer with SPF is a must-do. A great product that makes your skin look wonderful, lasts a long time, won’t turn colors, and has SPF 15, is Clarins Everlasting Foundation SPF15. It lasts up to 15 hours! The creamy, liquid foundation comes in an extremely attractive, rectangular glass bottle with pump top. But the product inside is the star: a creamy and blendable foundation with a moistly matte formula that looks a little bit luminous, not greasy, not dry – the perfect finish! It comes in five tones from fairly light to fairly dark. The formula has a plant based "micro patch" that seals in moisture, and helps keep your skin looking nice all day long. It has 100% natural minerals shield your skin from UV rays and help maintain the foundations even texture, leaving a flawless and incredibly supple finish. The Cream #104 I tried was perfect for my light but freckled complexion, being neither too light and ghostly, or too orange or dark. It just blended with my natural skin as easily as could be. The foundation doesn’t feel sticky on your skin, but it really does last, even when the humidity is high. I didn’t wear it for a full 15 hours, but it wore it long enough to know that is long lasting. In fact, you will have to wash your face well to get it off! It won’t clog pores, it’s allergy tested and good for all skin types. The overall look, applied with fingertips, is semi-opaque, which is fine for everyday. But if you use a foundation brush or sponge, you can make it even more matte and polished for date-night out. It’s a foundation for all seasons and all reasons! This everlasting foundation may just become your everlasting favorite! When the grandsons of makeup legend Max Factor combined to create a professional line of cosmetics, Smashbox Cosmetics was born! I've been a fan, for years. One of the things I love about the products is that many of them are multi-taskers. For example, High-Lights/Creamy Cheek Color from Smashbox's Naked Beauty Collection. One half of the compact is a shimmery, nearly nude highlighter to add a natural glow wherever you put it (eyes. lips, cheeks), and the other side has a creamy rose colored blush that can also be used on lips. When you first touch the product, it feels slippery, almost greasy, but it applies like a gel, blends beautifully, driest to the touch in a flash, and the color will stay put, and true, for hours. The product is solid in the compact, but literally melts on your fingers (or sponge applicator), You can blend it into a natural, beautiful sheer, or make it more intense with more layers. It's perfect for nearly all skin types and complexions and all you need to apply it is your fingertips. It's a super product for travel, This duo has got you covered! Rimmel is celebrating it's 10th anniversary as a cosmetics brand in the United States by embossing a crown logo onto its products, showing its U.K. heritage. Rimmel has also picked ten young girls to be America's Rimmel "royalty." They are the "Rimmel 10 Girls," and their task is to promote Rimmel products, and "the London look," to consumers. I tried a number of new products, including the Sun Shimmer Maxi Bronzer for Face and Body $7.99 that is packaged in a large, round, compact with a clear top, Most bronzers don't stay true to color, but this one, in three shades of light, medium and dark, does. If you can get a bronzer that doesn't make you into the great pumpkin, you've got to grab it!! I also liked the Rimmel Lasting Finish Blendable Blush & Highlighter $4.99. The regular blush comes in four universally flattering shades. "Pink Rose" can be applied with a light touch on pale skin, or with a heavier hand for deeper tones, and it'll look nice on just about everyone. The Blush & Highlighter $4.99 comes four shades that include two deeper, browner ones. You can use one stripe of color to color, one to contour, and one to highlight (it product has light-reflecting mica for a luminous glow) or just swipe your brush across all three for a lovely, slightly shimmery, blush color. TIP: for a natural blush, be sure to swirl your brush around all colors to blend them, so you don't end up with a striped look. Of course, there's mascara, nail polish, lip products (LOVE Moisture Renew Lip Colour SPF 18 $6.79 with hydrating polypeptides, Hyaluronic acid and natural collagen plus Vitamins A, C and E). NICE FOR NAILS:
The Duri Spring/Summer 2010 “Paparazzi” collection of Nail Polish $5.00 0.5 fl. oz. bottle may not get you a modeling contract, or even a front row seat at Fashion Week, but it will get your nails, noticed. All of the Spring and Summer colors have celebrity-relevant names, but what makes the collection particularly note-able is that it veers away from the traditional pastels, pinks and corals of summer, and focuses on bold, nontraditional colors with different formulas including sparkly blues and teals, opalescent purples, metallic orange, yellow, green and magenta, and a shiny, steel grey. This Brooklyn-based company also make their nail polishes, DBP-free. I didn’t try all dozen colors in the Spring and the Summer collections, but I tried a few. Curious? Please check out the details on the Advice Sisters Blog.

If you just want the nail prep, base and top coats, you can get them in a three-piece Kit $28.00. Save money and time, do it yourself, and do it fast!
FACE Stockholm's "three-free" Nail Polish $12.00 has no DPT, no Tulene and no Formaldehyde. You'll like the luxurious finish and the fact that these won't chip unless you really work your hands and nails..hard! The colors are rich, intense, and apply beautifully. And I can't help but love the chic, rectangular, bottles that showcase the beautiful colors within. Face Stockholm doesn't provide cute-sy names for it's shades. They label them simply, with numbers. New shades run from classics #106, a rich, deep, creamy coral, and #124, a bright, clear, warm red, to more trendy colors like a teal (#104), an Easter-Egg opaque lilac (#104), and a bright, creamy, Spring Green (#123) with sheer iridescence, deep color, glitter and treatments to take you from classic to edgy with just a few brush strokes.
BEAUTY'S LITTLE HELPERS:
All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage $25.50 is a rollerball pen that dispenses an oil-free, non-irritating, allergy tested, fragrance free, ophthalmologist-tested gel serum to treat your delicate, under-eye area. Roll the surgical steel rollerball on your under-eye area from inner corner to outer corner just twice and feel the cooling tingle. It is not only a way to distribute the gel serum, it increases micro-circulation and helps reduce fluid. The formula also helps to keep skin around your eyes, smoother and more translucent. The unscented gel absorbs quickly, and can be used morning, night, and as needed throughout the day. You can use it layered with other skin products and under/over makeup. This Summer it will help cool tired eyes, but no matter when you use it, the result is a nice pick me up. Usually I try product like this and wonder: what were they trying to do? But not with this one, Clinique got it just right and it really works! These days there are a lot of products that nourish lashes, because great eye lashes frame your face and enhance your eyes like nothing else. One that we love from Shu Uemura is Lash Repair $22.00 that does more than just hydrate, nourish, and repair lashes. That might be impressive enough, but not for Shu Uemura! This (invisible) treatment also acts as a lash primer, to help strengthen lashes and eyebrows while it helps act as a mascara base, so you get full, thick, and shiny lashes. Once you try it, you won't want to be without it!
Prevage creates a huge amount of buzz, every time Elizabeth Arden ads another product to the line. Elizabeth Arden recently announced the launch of another PREVAGE® Face Advanced Anti-aging Serum with Idebenone $155.00 1.7 fl. oz. with a "new & improved" deliver system. *just so that you are not totally confused: In the USA, Prevage Face Advanced Anti-Aging Serum has just replaced Prevage Anti-Aging Treatment. The product's star ingredient is still Idebnone, a very powerful antioxidant and the only one to receive the highest EPF® rating of 95 out of 100. It can act on all three levels of free radical damage, working deep within the surface layers of the skin to restore skin cells. But the new Prevage® Face delivers the Idbenone to your skin in a new way that advances its protective, preventive and corrective benefits. The formula has been re-engineered to help create a reserve within the skin to release protective and corrective benefits when and where needed most. Is this truly a miracle or just hope in a jar? The Advice Sisters wrote a detailed report on this new product, and you'll want to read all about it on the Advice Sisters Blog. If you're like most people, your foundation looks fine when you apply, it, but as the day wears on, everything from facial movements to weather and stress, can make it streak, fade, get shiny, or dry out. Skindinavia has six different types of Makeup Finish Mist $19, 4oz - $29, 6oz - $39.00. I tried the 10 Years Younger Makeup Finish. This oil-free mist keeps makeup fresh for up to 16 hours, A couple of spritzes helps to diminish the appearance of lines and wrinkles, reduce makeup slippage into pores, lines, wrinkles, or scars and help you avoid having to touch up so frequently. This particular mist also adds a bit of luminosity without shine, shimmer or sparkle. It's formulated with an ACB30 Thermal Control Blend to control the surface temperature of your makeup, so it resists drying, fading, and creasing. It also has CHO89; a color dispersing technology that helps you blend your makeup and correct imperfections even after you've applied it. The mist is formulated for sensitive skin and is dermatologist and allergy tested (and never tested on animals). You might wonder why you need this extra step, but if you want a fresh looking, made-up face all day or evening, or if you don't have time for touch-ups, you definitely want at least one of these mists. Our makeup lasted, and lasted...and lasted -- even those we tried with a creamy formula. We didn't test the other mists, but from B=bridal to hot flashes, dancing to oily skin, there's a solution for you from Skindinavia. We look forward to reviewing more products from this interesting line. I love products that are a little bit different. One that I recently tried that was actually fun to use, was the Steam Activated Cleanser by Biore $7.95 5 fl. Oz. I was immediately attracted to the clear, plastic bottle with light green pump top, showcasing the clear gel infused with tiny green "beads." When I pumped out some product, I also liked the light and uplifting, citrus scent. But it’s not just the energizing aroma that is good. This facial gel cleanser works with the steam in your shower to help deliver a deep cleansing experience that detoxifies your skin, and cleanses your pores, without irritation. The steam Activ beads (those little green things I noticed in the clear gel) have a cooling, mint extract, and the clear gel lifts away dirt, oil and makeup. Green tea leaf extract provides the antioxidant bennies, too. I liked the way the product foamed, and my skin felt truly clean without being dry or tight. Even better, this product is soap, sulfite and paraben free, and it won’t clog pores. Attractively packaged, fun to use, effective, safe, and kind to your skin – what more can you ask for in a facial cleanser? This is a little indulgence you can afford! Perlier Extreme Regonovive Hydro-Zone Serum $50.00 1.6 FL. oz.. is a long time for a product that moisturizes with inspiration from the desert rose, a plant that can live in total dryness for long periods of time and “resurrects” itself into a rose shape when moisture is available. The thick, non-greasy, odorless serum is dispensed from a light blue and white, plastic, pump bottle that has a metered dose, so you can’t over or undo-use. In all honesty, I thought the dose was a bit too much, but when I smoothed it over my face and neck, it seemed just about right. The product is enriched with trehalose, the formulation captures water and releases it to skin. Other key ingredients include some of the most potent moisturizers around: Hyaluronic acid, vegetal polysaccharides, soy extract, coconut oil and silicone powder. This product is good for all skin types, and you can use it as a base for your other products. I generally can’t test the efficacy of skin care long enough to report on results, but this one gives you an instant silkening you can feel and see—like the desert rose, I felt my skin “blossom.” It instantly felt smoother, softer and had a more lively glow. That is impressive. If you want a skin-loving pick-me-up that appears to make a difference without waiting for weeks, give it a try. Breakouts can ruin the look of healthy skin, but PCA Skin Acne Gel $40.00 1 fl. oz. works alone, or with two other PCA Skin products (Blemish Control Bar and Clearskin antibacterial night cream), to combat acne and breakouts. The Advice Sisters tried the Acne Gel. It is housed in a clear, plastic bottle that showcases the amber-tinted product, dispensed from a black pump top. It has an adult appropriate, 2% salicylic acid that helps to gently dry up zits as a spot treatment, while reducing oil production to discourage further breakouts. You ca use it once daily, applying a thin coat to effected areas. The light scent and invisible formula makes it great under makeup, too. These are not inexpensive, but acne can ruin your confidence not just as a teenager, but as an adult. If you can afford the cost of these products, you can help banish blemishes and go about your day without a second thought. Not too long ago, a woman who needed a disposable razor for travel, was faced with using a man’s product, guaranteed to rip her legs and underarms to shreds. But these days, women have options. One that I really like is the Schick Quattro for Women $7.39/3 razors that is not just easy to use for a smooth (and safe) shave, it’s affordable. The product doesn’t look or feel like those wimpy, thin disposable razors guys put up with, either. These have colorful, plump, curvy handles that are ergonomically designed with and rubberized for a sure grip. The design allows the razor head to lie flatter against your skin, for more maneuverability. The compact, pivoting head follows a woman’s body contours for a close, long-lasting, shave. Nestled into the blade cartridge (made in Germany by Wilkinson Sword, if you’re wondering), are nestled four, thin blades moisture strips enriched with an aloe and duo vitamin complex. You can get these in three varieties: ultra smooth, sensitive, and ultra smooth limited edition colors (not available until July/August 2010). And while you're thinking about what women want and need, why should ladies use a man's shaving cream? Doesn't make sense! One I really like is Skintimate Moisturizing Cream Shave $3.99 8 fl. oz. It doesn’t even look like a guy would want to use the curvy, ergonomically designed bottle with a plastic, flower shaped pull-up top. The product is a non foaming, fruity-floral scented, and moisturizing, shave product. There are three different types to choose from: Revitalizing is the newest. The rich, creamy formula is infused with exfoliating "pearls" and verbena, olive butter, soy, and antioxidant white tea. There’s also a formula for dry skin with the goodies in the Revitalizing Formula plus soy. There’s also one that’s extra-gentle–a dye-free cream that gives skin extra protection from nicks and cuts. Since I’m a klutz with a razor, that's the one for me! Read more on the Advice Sisters Blog
BEAUTIFUL BATH & BODY:
Now that warm weather is here, people who crave a safe, golden glow will be hitting the bottles of self-tanner (as if you haven't already been doing that all Winter, too). But to get a really smooth look, you need to prep your skin and make it as flaw-free as possible. Exfoliation...that's the first step and the secret to a great (faux) tan. Perlier Melograna in Mediterranean Pomegranate $25.00 6.7 oz. is a great body scrub that actually has good for your skin ingredients. For example, the oil from the seeds of the pomegranate offer anti-oxidant bennies, including Vitamin C. Studies have apparently shown that Pomegranate seed oil also stimulate keratinocyte proliferation, which sounds scary, but it's good" it promotes regeneration of the epidermis (the outer layer of your skin). The micro-granules in this creamy product slough off the dead, dry skin cells and imperfections you don't want on your body, even if you're not using a self-tanner. Use it regularly and your skin will be soft and glowing, and really feel much smoother, but it won't be red or irritated! By the way, it really doesn't smell that much like tart pomegranate, but the fragrance is fresh and super-light so guys will like it, too. Another plus is the clear, plastic, flip top tube that lets you dispense the thick, creamy exfoliator without efficiently and cleanly (sticking your finger into a jar of exfoliator, when you're already wet, can be messy), While an exfoliator might not seem like a perfect gift, this one is effective and luxurious. Package it with a great, pomegranate scented soap, a pomegranate candle, and a great new CD and it makes a perfect Mother's Day and couples shower gift. How could you not love products named "Seed"? A young couple wanting to make lifestyle changes, began working with a microbiologist in Boulder, Colorado, to create a natural brand of skin care that is enriched with the benefits of grape seeds. Grape seeds have tons of antioxidants and essential fatty acids that help promote healthy skin. The products are touted as 100% natural. When you look online, you can see the entire list of ingredients for these products. I really liked the Nourishing Body Lotion $8.99 8 fl. oz. in "Invigorating Citrus Thyme." A simple, clear plastic pump bottle holds a fragrant lotion with grape seed oil, green tea extract, and shea butter to hydrate, soothe and condition your skin. The citrus is energizing, and strong with just a hint of fresh, green notes. The lotion sinks into skin quickly, without being greasy or sticky. There's also a "Restful Lavender Sage" scent which I didn't try, but I'm willing to bet it is lovely, too. I also tried the Grape Seed Enriched Moisturizing Body Soap $4.49 4.2 oz bar, featuring natural seed exfoliants (in unscented but both soaps come in Invigorating Citrus Lime, too), and a nicely lathering, Conditioning Hair Shampoo $4.49 3.5 oz bar. (in Invigorating Citrus Thyme). The former exfoliates gently as it cleanses, and was pleasant to use. I'm not used to shampoo in a bar form, but with travel in airports restricting the amount and size of liquids you can bring onboard planes, I'm more interested than ever in solid shampoo. This one has that lovely citrus/green scent, and also Panthenol Pro-Vitamin B5 and fruit seed oils to add shine, softness and restorative properties to hair. My only complaint (if you want to consider it as such) is that the pear-shaped bar doesn't have a waterproof carrying case for travel. Even if your body is not a "temple," and you don't care about "all natural," the price is reasonable, and it's definitely a line to get to know!
I love the scent of almonds, and also of cherries...so Jergens Original Scent Dry Skin Moisturizer $4.49 10 fl. oz. (other sizes available) with Cherry-Almond hydrators, made me look for dry spots on my body so I could slather on just a little bit more. Yes, it does remind me of an easier time when "mom" bought one product she knew, loved, and trusted, and used only that. You get a lot of your dollar: a good moisturizer that doesn't feel greasy, and the aromatherapy bennies of that luscious scent! It's that scent that makes me want to moisturize more often. But this isn't a purely nostalgic product, it gives you that instant "ahhh" for your skin, that lasts for hours (the product claims up to 24 hours right on the bottle--but I didn't test it that long). The product is inexpensive, effective, and simply, great in every way. I can choose tons of moisturizing products. This is the one on my nightstand! Who says drug store brands are boring? Not Caress! They keep coming up with new, exciting, effective and fun products that won’t blow your budget. Now there are several more products perfect to soften skin and offer spa-style at beer and peanut prices. Caress Whipped Soufflé Body Wash $4.49 15 oz. comes in the same, plastic. teardrop-shaped bottle as their Exotic Oil Infusions, with a flat, flip-top bottom to let it stand sturdy in your tub. It comes in Blackberry Cream or White Peach Cream, developed by fragrance experts at Givaudan, just as if they were pricey perfumes. These have the highest level of moisturization from Caress’s collections, yet there is no greasy feel. You get just pampered and lightly scented skin. My personal preference is for less fruity fragrances, but that’s a personal choice, not a reflection on the very nice product. Also new is a Caress Velvet Bliss Body Wash and Beauty Bar $2.99/2 bars; $4.99/ 4 bars; $6.49/6 bars; $7.99/8 bars. These solid soaps give you a luxurious bath and shower treat, without the high cost. They have a blend of blackberry and vanilla essence that is slightly tart and energizing. And the soap works just as effectively to give your skin the same, luxurious, silky feel. They lather well and for the price, you’ll be enjoying bath time a lot more. There are lots of other Caress Bath and body products that I like, including Velvet Bliss, a Silkening Body Wash $4.49 18 fl. oz. that also comes in solid Beauty Bar soaps and has among others, the same Blackberry and Vanilla scent. You can’t go wrong with any of these products…boring? I think NOT!
The Advice Sisters web site and blog offer impartial, up-close-and-personal product reviews, conducted by expert beauty & fashion reviewer, Alison Blackman Dunham. If other opinions are included in a review, "we" (instead of "I") is used. My Review Philosophy: This beauty, fashion and cosmetics review column is called "What Works" (not what doesn't). I want to direct you to what I think are great products, not denigrate those I didn't like (but you might love). All beauty reviews are subjective. It's my responsibility to describe products in a way that offers information, but allows you to use your own, good judgment about whether to buy it or not. I have tested thousands of products and that gives me a strong background on which to base my comments, but in the end, the decision to try something is yours, alone. A Signature Approach Many online publications and blogs find it easier and more economical to just post photos and press releases of products "as if" they have actually used them, or offer their readers canned reviews someone else has written. The Advice Sisters only post original reviews and comments about products I (or another, qualified, adult reviewer) have actually tried, This approach takes much more time and effort, but it is what distinguishes The Advice Sisters from a lot of others. I know you appreciate the difference. A Note About Compensation: I never have, and never will, write about products using just high resolution photos and press releases, without experiencing the product "in person." These type of "faux" reviews add to the junk and clutter on the Internet, without offering anything substantive or new. In order to write real reviews of real products, however, I use samples provided by a company or a public relations firm. There is no way I could write valid, responsible, up-close-and-personal reviews without them. Sample products and services are not nearly "compensation" for the tremendous amount of effort it takes to write genuine reviews, nor do free samples influence my experienced opinion of products in any Advice Sisters content. I do not use "advertorial" (paid content) and, when I choose to include paid advertisements, they are clearly identifiable.
