Advice Sisters  FALL 2010 "What Works" Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion Review Column  by Alison Blackman Dunham

To My Readers: As you read about what's new for Fall, 2010 in this Advice Sisters "What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion Review," you'll see that the format has changed. Instead of a huge column and a page of purchasing links, I am now offering a short introduction to each review with a photo and a link so you have the option to click through if you want to learn more about a specific product. No more scrolling down page after page to find what you want! Once you're at a product review, you will get a comprehensive description, a full review, and price and purchasing information. This user-friendly approach will help you read more, with less effort.

In the nearly two decades that I've been writing online, a lot has changed. Once there were only web sites, and no smart phones, blogs, or social networking. But now all these things are available. They let me connect with more people, more often, and more efficiently. If you read the Advice Sisters Blog, you know that for several years I've been posting reviews and reports on a daily basis. Each post is automatically and immediately broadcast to the Advice Sisters Blog Feed, Twitter, FaceBook, LinkedIn, MySpace, and the Fashion & Style widget on Widgetbox. I am also now writing for the Examiner.com as the "NY Cosmetics Reporter" and The National Luxury Lifestyles Reporter. These posts are also linked and easily accessible.  There is just one "Advice Sister Alison" and a lot to write about!  It just makes sense to streamline this column. I hope you agree!

You can leave comments about the new format, or anything I write about, on the Advice Sisters Blog (and re-tweet posts as well), and also on the Advice Sisters Forums, or you can send me an email. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. In addition, I invite you to follow me on Twitter ( @advicesisters ) and FaceBook, or subscribe to the Advice Sisters Blog Feed.

Fall is one of The Advice Sisters favorite seasons. It's "back to school," shorter days, a crispness in the air, and the anticipation of the holidays to come.  This column focuses on for women and men,  and also all those "little things" that can help make life easier, more beautiful, and more fun.

All About Makeup

The Advice Sisters first reviewed Scarlett Cosmetics back in our 2003 Holiday What Works column.  I remember being impressed with this boutique brand. I knew great things would come from the founder, Scarlett Messina. Scarlett recently resurfaced, and suggested I try her Tantric Mascara, billed as the "world's first sex-proof mascara."  That opened my eyes, literally, as well as figuratively!  secretly tested this mascara at Fashion Week in NYC and makeup artists raved about it. Tantric Mascara has "tubes" that adhere to your lashes and stay until you wash it off (with traditional makeup remover, or just soap and water, and a little bit of "friction").  What makes it so different is that it isn't made with fibers that can drop off and irritate sensitive eyes (like mine), and contact lens wearers. If designer clothes aren't in your budget this Fall, the good news is that there are other, more affordable options to wear the creme de la creme, such as,  Armani.  For example,  For Fall 2010, Giorgio Armani is debuting three Rouge d'Armani Lipstick in “nocturnal” shades, inspired by the deep blue tones of night. That doesn't mean that the lipsticks are black or "goth" -- far from it. The rich, lustrous color will give you the defined, deep lips from the Fall runways in a mostly-matte formula. Lips will look full of saturated opaque color without shimmer, but lips will look moist, not dry. Read More

Armani Beauty has also launched an exceptional Lasting Silk UV Compact Foundation SPF 34 to help you be a winner in the "face race" for skin that looks flawless, but is also protected from the sun's damaging rays. This new solid foundation in a two-tiered, mirrored compact, has the mattifying effect of a powder, with a natural luminosity, but it also provides lightweight coverage. The powder arrives in eight shades, applied with the foam applicator that fits neatly into the bottom part of the compact. The foundation is simply smashing. Read More

If you're thinking of getting some new and upscale makeup for Fall 2010, you'll want to consider some of the trendy, wearable and truly luxurious products from Givenchy & Guerlain.  The Advice Sisters attended a special event called "Passport to Beauty" Passport to Beauty," featuring some of the launches for Guerlain and Givenchy. There are lot of great items to consider. such as the Givenchy Le Prisme Eye Shadow Quartets in this photo. I wrote about the newest Givenchy & Guerlain cosmetics launches on the Advice Sisters Blog as a sneak peek but now they're available in stores.  Read More

I love it when I discover a product that makes you feel good and helps you look good. PeaceKeeper Cause-Metics new 95% USDA Certified Organic YUM Balms fit the "great all around" category. In their slant-tipped squeeze tubes, these lip balms have just a hint of tint, and they look like the "Jelly" type sandals everyone wears to the beach. And, like the jelly sandals, the thing that grabs you is the clear, bright, shiny colors. But they do more than just shine your lips. They moisturize with delicious ingredients that are good for you: organic shea butter, gluten-free Vitamin E, red beet and cabbage juice, Goji berry, pomegranate, and sea buckthorn. If it's important to you, the fact that Yum Balms are not tested on animals, and don't have harmful chemicals, are a huge plus.  Read More

My Philosophy: There's nothing nicer than a new eye shadow palette, with colors that flatter, that are silky and blend-able, stay true to color, last a long time, and of course, multi-task. You should expect nothing less from the eye shadows you select this season. New to Philosophy (the brand) for the Supernatural Makeup collection are three "windows to the soul" eye shadow palettes. The four, coordinated shadow work overtime to make you look good. You get three shades of gorgeous mineral powder to color your eyelids, and or the crease, and for shimmer effects, plus a long-wearing, wet-to-dry powder liner. Each mirrored compact also includes a mini applicator shadow/liner applicator. Read More

I have fallen in love with one lipstick:  the new for Fall 2010 NARS "Rouge Basque." The name was inspired by the red brick and inside cover of a book from the Basque region of the French countryside. This is a deeply pigmented, red brick color, in a moistly-matte formula that looks more like a stain than a regular lip color.   You don't  have to have fair skin and freckles to love it, but if you are one of those people for whom red/orange is harsh, and most other reds are disturbingly bad with your skin, Rouge Basque is lipstick salvation! Did you enjoy the bronzed look of Summer? Weep not for its' passing, as  FACE Stockholm plans to keep those earthy, warm tones going right into Fall. The poster girl for this new collection is, fittingly, a Swedish pop star called “September.” According to the singer: “Wearing makeup is more than just making myself look pretty, it's about art. It's a way of expressing myself and creating my own fashion."  The collection is well edited, beautifully coordinated, and arrives in the shiny silver cases that make it look so elegant. Read More

As a child, one of my biggest joys was getting a new box of Crayola crayons. . They were so beautiful, grouped together by color tones in that big, cardboard box, that I never wanted to actually use them and ruin the points. If you have also always been dazzled by color, you will feel like a kid again when you see the new, 120 color Eye Shadow Palette from BH Cosmetics. This new, 3rd Edition (I tested the 2nd edition, too) 120 Color Eye Shadow Palette comes in a shiny black, mirrored compact containing colors that are custom-designed to work together to create literally, very look imaginable for summer into fall and into the holiday season. In the first level tray, there are a lot of warm, earth tones, including a lot of corals, peaches and oranges and some yellow-toned greens.  Some of the colors are pretty interpretations of traditional eye shadow colors, and others will inspire you to go out of the box with fashion, and have fun! I have long been a fan of Korres cosmetics. This Greek company has it's roots in the oldest homeopathic pharmacy in one of the most revered and ancient places on earth: Athens, Greece. Korres products are environmentally friendly and use active natural extracts with antioxidant and skin-transforming benefits. That good-for-your-skin philosophy and formulas are coming to one of the sexiest lip products I've found on the market today: the Korres Raspberry Liquid Lipstick It has a patent leather shine that silkens and moisturizes. But this lipstick-in-a-tube is also a great for your lips,  antioxidant-rich natural product. Read More

One of the things about the dawning of a new season, especially Fall, is the chance to re-imagine your image with new colors, new clothing, new style. An easy and affordable way to add something new to your look, is with makeup. Elizabeth Arden's Fall Collection features lovely and wearable colors to enhance, update, and improve your look, such as this awesome, Color Intrigue EyeShadow Quad in "Sueded Browns" and a luxurious,  Color Intrigue Effects Lipstick $19.50. This one, in Cranberry Cream, is the type of deep, dramatic red that every woman needs in her lipstick wardrobe. Read More

Pur Minerals makes one of my all time favorites products: excellent Correcting Primers. and I'm very excited to be able to present Pur Minerals two new collections that launch in September:  "Earthly Treasures" and "Heavenly Delights (in the photo)," plus a useful new iPhone App. Read More

FABULOUS FRAGRANCES:

'

I don't think I've ever smelled a fragrance from Giorgio Armani that I didn't like. Each is distinguished and stands on it's own merits Now, Giorgio Armani has created a new scent called Acqua di Gioia, literally translated to: "water of joy." This is not the same fragrance as the awesome Armani scent for men called Acqua di Gio (which the advice sisters reviewed in June 2006). This is a women's scent, and it just launched in June 2010. Who says fragrances can't be affordable and fun? Demeter Fragrances have  250 different scents in their "Fragrance library," and over dozens of single-note fragrances in a variety of themed collections. They have florals and fruits, and other traditional scents, but they also have dozens or really weird and unusual ones definitely not made in nature. For example, my husband's favorite Demeter Fragrance is called "Crayon." He keeps a bottle on his desk at work, maybe to remind him that all work and no play, is not a good thing. There are candy hearts and Necco inspired scents, and even some like dirt and celery. Even better, these scents are truly affordable. Read More

At the Passport to Beauty event where I tried products from Guerlain, Givenchy, Acqua di Parma, Pucci, Kenzo,  and more as a sneak peek. Hopefully I will have a chance to consider some of these new fragrances, launching this Fall, in greater detail in future posts such as the re-designed bottle for Shalimar, by Jade Jagger. For now, here is my sneak peek. If you are considering a new fragrance for Fall, you will want to Read More

Paris Hilton Tease is Ms. Hilton's latest scent. Like Madonna, Paris adopts a new persona on a regular basis. Her fragrances do seem to mirror Paris's image du jour. For this latest scent, Tease, the vibe is Hollywood Glamour, Marilyn Monroe style. As Paris matures, her style seems to get more flirty and sexy. Nothing has subdued Paris! Developed by Perfumer Steve DeMercado of Fragrance Resources (who also created Jessica Simpson’s new scent, Fancy Nights), Tease feels very young and playful. It isn't trying to be uber-sophisticated. Paris Hilton is quoted as saying: “I want to give women permission when they wear this fragrance to tease their man with all that flirting allows.” Tease, may succeed where words fail. Even the most dense guy will know you’re tempting him if you wear Tease--he'll know it even with his eyes closed. Read More

Jessica Simpson's latest fragrance,  Fancy Nights, is the third is a series of "Fancy" scents for Simpson. The presentation is lovely. Fancy Nights is a feminine floriental scent. It's not light and girly, but it's not "grandma" either. I think it reflects where Jessica is in her life right now. She's older and more mature than when she was first in love and married to Nicholas Lachey and her first fragrance line, Desert, launched. That collection was full of sugary sweet, "edible” fragrances that was all flirty girl. Even the first of the "Fancy" trio was a creamy, gourmand scent, geared to an audience probably about the age that Ms. Simpson was when she launched it. Fancy was created by perfumer Alexis Dadier of Mane, developed with Parlux Fragrances and the Camuto Group. Fancy Nights, is not "flirty girly" but is more sensual --a woman's floral.  Read More

Good things are worth the wait and that's the case with Liz Earle Botanical Essence No. 1. This the  first fragrance from the line.  Liz Earle is an English company, but they worked with Jean Charles Neil, an expert nose and distinguished French perfumer, who hand-crafted this complex scent, working with the team at Laboratoire Monique Remy in Grasse, France (Grasse is known as one of the most celebrated perfume producing regions in the world). One of the things that makes Liz Earle Botanical Essence No. 1 so special, is that it has over 98% of its formula directly derived from natural ingredients from a virtual United Nations of countries.  Read More

FALL FASHION ACCESSORIES:

To some, this may look like just a bunch of pretty bangles, but they're not quite just bangles. These are Alex & Ani bangles. Carolyn Rafaelian, designer and creator of the fantastic Alex and Ani jewelry line, has a following of celebrity fans so long, I can't list them all, but stars that have worn Alex and Ani include: Sandra Bullock, Carrie Underwood, Sir Paul McCartney, Kerry Washington, Ashley Tisdale, Miley Cyrus, Jessica Simpson, and Vanessa Hudgens...just to name a few. Now you can not only get some of these luxe bangles for yourself, you can design them just as you want them through the Alex and Ani Web Site's newest online feature, the ‘Create Your Own’ Bangle Bar. So luxe! So chic! So you! The neat thing about this new, online feature, is that you can design the number and type of bangles you want in a set. Each bangle has the clever, expandable bracelet design Alex and Ani is known for. It has a patented, sliding mechanism instead of a clasp making each piece adjustable, so you have a customized fit. Select your bracelet set from a variety of vintage beads and finishes for the bangles, and then if you wish, add some pretty charms. I added a fancy, gold metal beaded bracelet that needs no additional adornment (there are colorful beaded versions, too). If you're on a budget. Read More

here is nothing worse than getting dressed up and wearing a killer pair of shoes, that ends up being just that...killers on your feet! Andrea Padilla, the designer of Spare Soles, wanted an affordable, portable product that she could turn to when she needed to kick up her heels, but kick off her heels, too. The result was a fold-able ballet slipped that not only zipped into a makeup-bag-sized pouch, but with a pouch that could transform into a handled tote bag, too! I've seen fold-able ballet flats before, but never one that could be put into a tote and with a pouch that turns into the tote, itself. That, is clever! Read More

SKINCARE

I have always liked Avon products, especially Anew. While other companies put high price tags on cutting edge technology, Avon seems to provide the same,. or similar, or better, nearly close to those launches, and at prices anyone can afford. That line started out with one, impressive, anti-aging product, and now has morphed into many others. One of the newbies, exclusively Avon Clinical, is Avon Anew Clinical Luminosity Brightening Serum. This is Avon’s first topical serum, and it features and inject able-grade skincare. The product information says it provides “an at-home option to a dermatologist laser!” They say it “instantly makes your skin look brighter and more even toned.” Furthermore, Avon claims that 80% of women saw the look of dark spots dramatically diminish and 100% of women showed more illuminated skin with visible reduction in fine wrinkles, over time (that appears to be about 8 weeks). Ever since I was a little kid, I have been fascinated by...foam! I used to love to make a lot of lather with soap bubbles or shampoo, and play around with it. Now that I am an adult, I find that I still love beauty products that foam. A new Facial Cleanser that satisfies my craving for fun and foam, while it does good things for my skin, is the Foaming Facial Cleanser by CeraVe. Designed for normal to oily skin, this cleanser gently removes dirt, oil, and most makeup, and helps to minimize an oily T-zone (if you have it, you'll find that the shine is worse during the hot weather). But while it removes all the things you don't want on your skin, it replenishes the things you do want. Read More

Luxury shaving cream in nice scents with skin-loving properties are all the rage, these days. Shaving products are a simple thing that can enhance your day, or perhaps, dry out your skin, assault your nose with chemical smells, and put you in a bad mood! Pure Silk Moisturizing Shave Cream by Barbasol has some nice benefits that women will love. For starters, the Pure Silk Moisturizing Shave Cream features 7 different scents, including "peaches & cream" for sensitive skin. Shaving creams can range from less than a latte, to more than lunch in cost! But inexpensive doesn’t mean cheap or bad. Pure Silk is enriched with aloe to soothe and moisturize, and it protects against nicks and cuts. Read More

How can you not love something called "Peace Soap"?Peace Soap, by Kiss My Face, it is not just an all natural, liquid castile soap touted as having 101 uses, it is also a nice, if indirect way, to help give peace a chance in this conflict-riddled world. Kiss my Face donates 10% of all profits from their Peace Soap to benefit Seeds Of Peace. This unusual organization brings teenagers together from opposite sides of a conflict, such as Israelis and Palestinians. The teens get a chance to learn (and live) with one another, in an attempt to humanize the "enemy" and bring about understanding, and hopefully, eventually, peace. Peace Soap is a castile soap--a product that has been around a long time--natural and simple. The Grassy Mint Peace Soap I tried (there are three others: Lavender Mandarin, Lemongrass Clary Sage, and Pomegranate Acai). Read More

The Body Shop always has been healthy and "green," but their new, Nutriganics line is their latest, certified organic skincare collection. From cleansers to toners to moisturizers, and masks to serums, these products will entice anyone who is interested in green and natural products. My favorite is the Foaming Facial Wash. I love the rich, frothy feel, and the fact that air is pumped into the product means you will also get more mileage out of it, per bottle. The product has Community Trade organic babassu oil from Brazil , to help smooth and revitalize your skin. Organic mallow flower from Switzerland and Community Trade organic sugar from Paraguay moisturize and soften. Essential oils and natural fragrances combine to create a slightly earthy scent. The bottle states that 99% of the ingredients are of natural origin, and 12% of the total ingredients are from natural farming. Read More

BATH & BODY:

When money is tight, it might feel like a must, to give up splurges, but Sotfsoap has just introduced three new body washes that cleanse and moisturize, and cost less than a sandwich! Nutri Serums Mineral Extracts, Body Butter Mega Moisture Heavenly Vanilla, and Black Orchid &Velvet Hibiscus. I tried the Black Orchid & Velvet Hibiscus, which is available at mass retail and grocery stores nationwide right now. The bottle, with nicely fitting flip top, is shaped like a tapered bullet. the plastic is clear so you can see the pearly, lavender-tinted liquid, within. There's a nice purple label with a photograph of black orchids, making the presentation look elegant (no "no frills" packaging to make you feel deprived of luxury). Read More

When I think of body butter, I usually think of it as being all business: something to soothe really chapped, itchy, dry, gross-looking skin that really need a huge amount of moisture-stat! But body butters these days are not just super moisturizers, they're really luxurious, with novel scents and non-greasy formulas that make moisturizing, actually fun!. In the past, the Pacifica body butters were packed into jars. The great news is that now you can get them in colorful, flip-top tubes. This makes it much more portable. Also, you don't have to stick your fingers into a jar, possibly contaminating the products and definitely sullying your fingertips! I tried the Hawaiian Ruby Guava Body Butter, in a hot pink tube with gold flip cap, and a hibiscus graphic. The tart fragrance was uplifting and lasted quite some time--perfect if you want something pretty and scented on your skin after a long day at the beach or pool, but not quite as significant as Eau de Toilette or Perfume. Aloha nui loa, Pacifica (very much love, Pacifica)! Read More

HAIR HELPERS

Your choice of a new blow dryer or flat iron should not just be about efficiency (although that is always a very important decision when choosing a hair appliance), but also the intrinsic pleasure of having something lovely to look at. The Ed Hardy Vintage Collage Hair Tool Line fits the description of great to use, and gorgeous to look at. The collection features a Professional Styling Iron and Blow Dryer, literally covered with the colorful, tattoo-style designs of Ed Hardy. I got a chance to test out the Ed Hardy hair dryer (I didn't try the flat iron so I'm focusing my comments on the hair dryer alone, but I'm sure the flat iron is equally amazing). Mine has the "Love Kills Slowly" design (so cool, it is a work of art even if you didn't ever turn it on and use it). You can see how great it looks in the photo, above. This Ed Hardy Vintage Collage Hair dryer has all the bells and whistles a pro would want, and it is excellent quality, but it isn't a toy -- it delivers pro-style results. Still, if you are just at do it yourself at home type of person, you'll find it to be user friendly and very efficient --but it's the shiny black case with a riot of colors in Ed Hardy's tattoo style, that makes it super special. Shu Uemura Art of Hair stylist Conrad Dornan recently teamed up with V! Magazine and model/student Coco Young for a cool video interview titled, “Hair Play.” In the video, Coco Young reveals what she's been up to lately, talks about her favorite movie (The Eyes of Laura Mars with Faye Dunaway) and about a photographer she really likes (hint: it isn't me...at least not yet!). Conrad created a few Fall worthy looks that you can see on the video, and re-create at home using Shu Uemura Art of Hair Products such as this awesome, Shu Uemura Silk Oil Camellia Smoothing Fluid. See the Video & Read More

The newest trend in hair appliances are to make these boring, but necessary tools, look like works of art. While I'm a huge fan of the Remington Frizz Therapy Flat Iron (really, really, really love this flat iron), a decorative hair dryer or flat iron shows your personal style, and makes using that tool, more fun. Remington Cool Style Hair Dryers and Flat Irons, for example, come in a wild and fun variety of polka dots, animal prints. a pink floral, and a light pastel plaid. But don't be fooled by the cute designs. The hair dryer, for example, is a powerful, full sized, 1875 watt dryer. You might expect to pay a lot of money for this dryer, but the suggested retail price is just $19.99-- incredible! The flat iron, impresses, too.  This is truly, affordable glamour!  Read More

It might not be a revolution, but Scunci has an Evolution! It's the name of a new line of hair accessories made of a unique, stretchy, gel material that makes the elastic smoother, and more comfortable to use than traditional hair elastic bands. The Evolution pony elastics and hair bands are super-stretchy and pliable, offering Scunci's famous "no slip grip" to keep them in place. You can get them for less than lunch (approx $3.50). The ponytail holders come in packages of 14 of brights (red, orange, green, blue, purple and black) or more subdued tones (black, teal, purple, mauve, and grey). The thin hair bands are about the width of a linguine noodle, and come in packages of four: black/pink/grey/clear or lime green/turquoise/black/pink. These are perfect for keeping your hair off your face, especially at the gym, and for travel.  Read More

You can have the best hair style and the best color in the world, but if your hair is dull, dry and lackluster, you will ruin the effect. While you may not be able to completely reverse the damage you've already done to your hair this Summer, you can mitigate it , and make it look better. A product I've recently tried, that really makes a BIG difference, is RUSK Deepshine Lustre Shine Enhancing Lusterizer. This little miracle comes in a sea blue, flip-top tube, and you can use it on damp hair, or as a shine enhancer and silkener for dry hair. The creamy, light blue cream smells like a marine floral (fresh) and it actually is formulated with moisturizing marine extracts including Rusk’s unique Marine Nutrient Complex. Read More

A few months ago, in the serious heat of the Summer, I attended an event at which eco-friendly, celebrity hair stylist Patrick Melliville and staff was offering blow-outs (very much needed in the humidity and heat), along with the chance to try new, Aveeno hair care products. The new, Aveeno Active Naturals Hair Care Collection is infused with nourishing wheat complex, to replenish moisture that may have been lost (making your hair look dry, frizzy, and unmanageable). There are a variety of affordable, effective products in four basic categories: Shampoo, conditioner, Leave In and Styling products. I have become a real fan. Read More

A hair dryer is something we generally take for granted. Most of us own at least one, and once it's in our home, we just forget about it's features, or the fact that like any technology, hair dryer improvements continue to make themselves available to the general public. There are some real plusses that come with the Infiniti Pro by Conair™ 1875-Watt Salon-Performance AC Motor Styling Tool. It may have you seriously thinking about ditching your old dryer, and getting this new one. The Infiniti Pro by Conair™ 1875-Watt Salon-Performance AC Motor Styling Tool, got my attention right away, not just because of it's bright, orange color, but also because this particular hair dryer has power, and neutralizing ions that that seal the hair cuticle. The 1875 watts gives you a lot of power to dry your hair fast (because you have better things to do than sit all day and wait for your hair to dry), thanks to ceramic technology. But it also means that you will get softer, smoother hair, with less frizz and more shine. Read More

Major chain drugstores these days have taken some of their own, and modestly-priced products, upscale. For example, CVS already has the excellent skincare line, Lumene. When I visited my local CVS store recently, I noticed Bioluxe, a hair care line, exclusive to CVS. It is created for people who want salon quality products and results, but without salon quality prices. The collection features products that are infused with natural ingredients and are especially good for dry, damaged, limp, frizzy or color treated hair. Salon professionals helped develop the products, and road test them. The Bioluxe Professional Collection of Shampoos and Conditioners feature several different product types to address the needs of a variety of hair types: Read More

JUST FOR GUYS:

I have always been wild for the products of Indigo Wild, a company that specializes in all natural products that are enticingly scented My favorite have always been the moisturizing goat’s milk soaps (called Zum Bars) and room sprays (called Zum Mists) that you’d want to use not just to mask an odor, but to enhance the atmosphere of a room. There are 31 different scents, all made with 100% pure essential oils...and now two more: lemon-geranium, and frankincense-lavender The frankincense-lavender is a rich blend of mostly lavender, and also a lot of spice, The lemon geranium is uplifting and lemony, not too tart, tempered by the florals.  I admit that these are definitely NOT just for guys, but they are for everyone, and given that at least some guys leave stinky clothes and shoes lying around, I'm putting this ode to odor eaters in the Just For Guys section of this column. Indigo Wild makes plenty of other products for hair, skin, face, home that are also, a treat for everyone. Read More.

Kiss my Face has wonderful and affordable products are simple and pleasant to use. The fact that they're natural and organic (terms that are bandied about a great deal these days--you really have to look at the ingredients) and put their ingredients on the label, is nice too. The company uses potent and pure botanicals, natural vitamins and minerals, with most ingredients from renewable resources that are environmentally sound -- many of the herbs are grown or harvested by indigenous peoples, helping them preserve their way of life. The first Kiss My Face product I ever tried (decades ago) was, oddly their Shaving Cream. I loved the rich, creamy product, and the way it moisturized my legs. It's been a long while since the original bottle was offered, in a flip top lid. Now there are seven, scented Moisture Shaves: key lime, lavender & shea butter, peaceful patchouli, peaches & cream, cool mint, and vanilla earth, and unscented, available. The company also has great, foaming Soaps, with large, guy-friendly pump-tops, such as the Rosemary and Melon version shown in this photo. No they're not just for guys, but again, I think men are going to love the unscented shaving cream and the foaming hand soaps just as much, more as the ladies do.  Read More

NIFTY BEAUTY HELPERS:

Some genies come out of bottles, but Scent Genie is a bottle (with "magic" properties). Really, I'm not kidding. Scent Genie is magical--a little bit of genius, and a must-have for anyone who loves to wear scent, and take it with them.  Scent Genie will grant your wish to carry fragrance easily, quickly, and safely. In the old days, if you wanted to carry fragrance with you, the choices were slim. You either had to carry the bottle with you, risking breakage and seepage in your purse or luggage, or you had to transfer your precious scent with a dropper or a funnel into a smaller bottle or roller-ball. Either way, it was a messy way to go, and you probably lost more fragrance trying to transfer it into another flacon, than it was worth. But recently, I was introduced to Scent Genie, a refillable atomizer that makes carrying your fragrance easy, quick, and totally non messy.  The little, bullet-shaped atomizer comes in five colors (so the guys can carry one in a color that looks appropriate, or you can get one in every color and "color code" your own scents into them).  Scent Genie is even "green," since it is made from 98% recyclable materials and crafted from Aircraft Grade Aluminum, making it light and tough.

I thought I'd reviewed Degree Ultra Clear deodorant, anti-perspirant SRP approx. $3.50 2.6 oz. in my Summer, 2010 What Works column, but somehow, I can't find it and so I'm including a new review, here. I know I tried it, but the review, just isn't on the column where it should be.  What makes this product unusual, is that it won't leave white marks on clothes!  Now that Fall is here and you're more than likely to be wearing darker clothes, and those LBDs, you'll need this more than ever.  The product is a stick deodorant that (they say) smells like the scent of pure rain.  While I don't think it does, it has a nice, fresh, slightly floral scent.  The product reacts to your body, to stop odor and wetness, and that's what you really buy a deodorant/antiperspirant for. For those who have sensitive skin, I am listing the ingredients, because I have them:   Active: Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex Gly, Inactive: Cyclopentasiloxane, Stearyl Alcohol, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Ppg-14 Butyl Ether, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Fragrance (Parfum), Dimethicone, Polyethylene, Steareth-100, Sunflower Seed Oil, Bht. This Degree product is so inexpensive, but it could save your clothes, and your dignity.  Single ladies, put your hands up (without fear of white stains on your clothes)!

When I see clear, blue liquid in a bottle, I always think of water, and of glaciers. Of course, the latter is made from the former, so that makes sense. The new, Philip B Blue Spray is also made from water, and is will feel cooling and refreshing, and it's also, uplifting.  Just like a blast of menthol breath spray, this is a face/body spray that will also give you an instant pick me up. It's an herbal mist --a powerful blend of Menthol and pure essential oils of Peppermint, Lavender, Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Marjoram, Pine and Tea Tree. The spray looks cool, and it feels cool. It's perfect for a treat after a workout, or soothing sore muscles. Read More

There's nothing sexy about stained teeth. There are plenty of DIY whitening products, but they aren't really portable, convenient, and totally discreet. One that is, is Sparkle365™’ by NewSmile. The product comes in a slim, click-it pen with a brush tip, from which you apply a patented, minty-tasting formula that helps brighten teeth. No one can see it on your teeth, and you can't really feel it, either. But the liquid gel will work it's magic as you go about your day without a second thought about whitening your teeth. What Sparkle 365 does, without smoke and mirrors, is combine light refraction technology with a unique whitening agent, Sparkle365™ to help user get immediate relief from those nasty stains. As the hydrogen peroxide in the gel is broken down, oxygen acts upon the organic deposits on your teeth and oxidizes them into a lighter color. Read More

ABOUT THE ADVICE SISTERS "What Works" Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion  Reviews:

The Advice Sisters web site and blog offer impartial, up-close-and-personal product reviews, conducted by  expert beauty & fashion reviewer, Alison Blackman Dunham.  If other opinions are included in a  review, "we" (instead of "I") is used.

My Review Philosophy: This beauty, fashion and cosmetics review column is called "What Works" (not what doesn't). I want to direct you to what I think are great products, not denigrate those I didn't like (but you might love).  All beauty reviews are subjective. It's my responsibility to describe products in a way that offers information, but allows you to use your own, good judgment about whether to buy it or not. I have tested thousands of products and that gives me a strong background on which to base my comments, but in the end, the decision to try something is yours, alone.

A Signature Approach    Many online publications and blogs find it easier and more economical to just post photos and press releases of products "as if" they have actually used them, or offer their readers canned reviews someone else has written.  The Advice Sisters only post original reviews and comments about products I  (or another, qualified, adult reviewer) have actually tried,  This approach takes much more time and effort, but it is what distinguishes The Advice Sisters from a lot of others. I know you appreciate the difference.

A Note About  Compensation:  I never have, and never will, write about products using just high resolution photos and press releases, without experiencing the product "in person." These type of  "faux" reviews add to the junk and clutter on the Internet, without offering anything substantive or new.  In order to write real reviews of real products, however, I use samples provided by a company or a public relations firm. There is no way I could write valid, responsible, up-close-and-personal reviews without them.  Sample products and services are not  nearly "compensation" for the tremendous amount of effort it takes to write genuine reviews, nor do free samples influence my experienced opinion of products in any Advice Sisters content. I do not  use "advertorial" (paid content) and, when I choose to include paid advertisements, they are clearly identifiable.
