THE
ADVICE SISTERS® "What Works" Beauty, Cosmetics &
Fashion Review Column, JUNE 2006 by Alison Blackman Dunham
I've always thought that June was the most special month. The weather is warmer, but not too hot, and the flowers and trees are alive and beautiful. It's also the month for special events -- weddings, graduations, family get-togethers, and for those who celebrate it, Father's Day. Increasingly men are reading this "What Works" column, so it seems only fitting to focus on the guys, this time. And, we're also focusing on special event makeup and the best-of-the best products that will help you transition from Spring into Summer. To view previous "What Works" Beauty, Cosmetics, and Fashion Review columns, visit the "What Works Archives". And, as always, we value your comments. SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR THAT SPECIAL MAN:
Barcelona Bath & Body, new to our reviews, draws it's inspiration from the Mediterranean, with a nice line of soaps, room sprays, and candles. They believe that home fragrance should be about layering...combining products to create a harmonious feeling of scent throughout your home. We sampled the Grande Candle $24.00. It's made of hand-poured 100% soy wax (soy burns longer and cleaner than paraffin wax) with a lead-free wick (eliminates soot). "Grapefruit and Ylang Ylang" has a nod to citrus, but the overall effect is exotic spices. The goldenrod colored candle in a frosted glass votive with silvery top is a nice host/hostess gift,as well as a splurge for yourself of that special man. One scent men will especially appreciate is the "Coconut Bay Rum," (classic for men). We also liked the Room Refresh $19.00 8 fl. oz, a tropical blend of slightly sweet, slightly spicy with a hint of what we think smells a bit like warm vanilla rum. The simple, shatter-proof frosted bottle with a matte aluminum sprayer is perfect for travel and for gift-giving, too. We will be reviewing more Barcelona Bath & Body in our JULY column, so watch for it. Most men appreciate just how much scent can be seductive, especially to entice prospective partners, but if your special man is still clueless, he'll get the idea once he sniffs the beautifully scented Room Spray $28.00 by Malie Kauai! This company uses Hawaiian hydrosols that contain every element of the flower or fruit. We tried Coconut Pineapple, a universally popular summertime fragrance. Apart from the romance aspects of this one, men will appreciate the substantial glass bottle with golden top and sophisticated graphics featuring a border of pineapples, in brown, green white and yellow. Everyone will like the scent. it's light and pleasant--more on the pineapple side than coconut, and it's not too sweet or insincere! There's also coconut vanilla, gardenia and pikake. We'll be reviewing a Malie Kauai candle in our July/August column, so watch for it!
Bay rum is a timeless favorite for men's scent, but I never really understood what it was. The "bay" part comes from the distilled oil of a West Indian Bay tree, which is a sturdy evergreen shrub or tree of the Myrtle family. The "rum" part comes from the fact that in the good old days, the leaves were distilled in rum matured in wooden kegs. You can imagine that this is a manly scent! According to C.O Bigelow, their Bay Rum was the first fragrance ever developed by the company for men -- and that was in 1907! The C.O. Bigelow Bay Rum $39.50 of today is a woodsy, spicy blend of bay oil, citrus, and spices. It is surprisingly light and refreshing, and appropriate, day or evening. This is a true classic scent to please men of all ages. Acqua Di Gio by Giorgio Armani is a beautiful blend of citrus and marine scents, introduced in 1997. Now, just in time for the warmer months (and Father's Day), Armani introduces Acqua Di Gio Moisturizing Body Gel $28.00 6.7 fl. oz. The notes are mandarin, bergamot, neroli, persimmon, rosemary, nasturtium, jasmine, amber, patchouli, and cistus. Even men who normally don't moisturize, will be infatuated with this clear, clean, quickly absorbed gel, totally non-sticky gel that leaves skin baby soft, and generously scented with the Acqua Di Gio fragrance. This is a cool, light way to wear scent! Apply it, and your skin gets a refreshing, cooling sensation that men will love. The simple, frosted, translucent plastic bottle with grey lettering and dispenser cap makes it just right for travel, or after showering at the gym. Curious, I tried this product, too. I'm so loving it.... I only wish they made this moisturizing body gel for women, too! We have reviewed many perfumes by Caron for women, in past years. This column, however, for Father's Day, Pour Un Homme Impact Edition $250.00 100 ml is our focus. This classic Caron fragrance for men has a strong note of lavender, which makes it stand out from other men's fragrances. It has top notes of absolute of lavender (selected from over 100 varieties grown in the soils of Provence) and essence of vanilla, with a heart also of lavender and vanilla, and a base of musk and deep amber. Another distinguishing factor is that this fragrance is strong and powerful--you immediately sense it's presence and don't really notice any alcohol in it. We didn't get the actual bottle, but we're told that the green colored fragrance is housed in a curved glass and pewter bottle, and housed in a suede pouch with the Caron logo. It is made for a man, but I do see the possibility of a unisex quality here. After 100 years of producing the highest quality fragrances, Caron knows how to create a classic fragrance and make it stand the test of time. Pour Un Homme Impact will make a positive impact on the lucky recipient, and on all those fortunate enough to be close to him, too. We just reviewed BRUT skincare items in our April column, but we couldn't resist including two more Brut items that we didn't review --perfect if you're on a tight budget for Father's Day gifts and simply because men still love them! Brut Splash-on $5.00 7 oz. and Cologne $6.99 5 oz. There's that "essence of a man" (the slogan on every bottle) -- clean, light, and slightly citrussy. And, the familiar green bottle with with black and white label is one a man can relate to without feeling intimidated. The scent is not overpoweringly strong, but it's enough to be noticeable. We know some men use it as a cover-up after a workout or on a hard, hot day-without bathing--please do shower first! This is a true classic--at any price. We reviewed Curve Chill for Her by one of our favorite designers, Liz Claiborne, in our MAY column. Liz also created a men's version: Curve Chill for Him, Cologne Spray 4.2 fl. oz $49.50. I loved this crisp, refreshing scent..and so did my male reviewer. We got a sample, but the actual packaging is a re-useable black tin with blue lettering, and a frosted white bottle with black, light blue and orange lettering. Inside the bottle is the real prize--a simply wonderful scent! It's a clean, refreshing blend of citrus, bergamot, Green Tea and cooling White Pepper with bottom notes of Vetiver, Woods and Musk--masculine and modern. We think this one would appeal to any man for any reason...in any season --and especially in the warmer months and with casual clothes, when a crisp, light, refreshing scent is best. If you're seeking a great gift for a special man, or if you're a man looking for a new fragrance for Summer, you can't go wrong choosing Curve Chill for Him. Estée Lauder is known for popular women's fragrances, but the company also makes versions of some of their most popular scent, in men's versions. Two for now that we know men will love are Estee Lauder Pleasures for Men cologne Spray 1.7 fl. oz $35.00 3.4 fl. oz $49.50 and Beyond Paradise Men Cologne Spray 1.7 fl. os $39.50, 3.4 fl. oz $58.00. We received these products too late to include photos, we want to include them in time for Father's Day. Beyond Paradise Men looks fabulous before you even open the box--it's a soft rose, moving into clear blue, and up towards the top of the box dissolving into a deep, sea green. The interesting, pouch-spaed bottle also reflects these colors, topped with silver. Inside, the fragrance is described as a "prismatic wood." The unique top notes are at first fresh and tangy-fruit: eden's mist, Jabuticaba fruit and eden buchu, with middle notes of Mediterranean accord, a blend of lavender absolute, Provence sage, tarragon and thyme. The bottom notes soften this mix, with a sensual blend of Golden Melaleuca Bark, Eden Vetiver, Beach wood, oak moss, and patchouli. Lauder Pleasures for Men is of a different tone, entirely, from the cool, grey box with white lettering, to the simple, rounded square glass bottle with large, rounded cap. This woodsy-fresh scent is modern, and yet has all the elements of a classic. It is an elegant blend of citrus and herbs, just perfect for summer, mixed with herbs, spices and woods, and a unique, "sky air accord." To notes are citrus effervescence, nectarine, and sky air accord. Middle notes addan exotic bit of spice: pimento, coriander seed, red ginger, and the finale? Base notes of sandalwood, iridescent ebony, and deep forest moss. As one reviewer put it: "this is the kind of scent you'll want to get close to...very close!"
SENSATIONAL SCENTS FOR WOMEN:
Trish McEvoy Snowdrop & Crystal Flowers sounds like it should be a Winter fragrance, but actually, it is a perfect choice for warm weather. It's a super-light, white floral, just perfect as the mercury, rises because it enhances your body chemistry, and doesn't fight it. This romantic scent won't bowl anyone over from across the room. It is most effective when someone is up close (and isn't that why you're wearing fragrance, anyway?). The notes are White narcissus, snowdrop flowers and crystal musk. The Bath & Shower Gel $38.50 5 fl. oz is a nice way to enjoy the scent, either on it's own, for for layering. I adore the nicely foaming, effectively cleansing, scented gel that leaves skin pampered and silky.
Pevonia Botanica's skin care line just for men recently re-launched, with four products. Called"Spa Care For Him," These are an exciting option for men who understand the benefits of good skin care. They help fight aging skin, prevent razor burn, eliminate sensitivity and combat folliculitis. The bronzed, metallic, ergonomically- designed bottles look masculine and sleek on a shelf, too.. Our male reviewers liked the herbally scent of the Pevonia Botanica Easy Glide Shaving Emulsion $33.005 0z. They may not have realized that natural botanicals don't just contribute a nice and natural fragrance. The safflower oil hydrates, chamomile soothes and heals, vitamin E to repairs and nourishes, lavender calms, patchouli decongests, and lemon verbena cools. Although some men prefer a soapy, foamy shave, this silky lotion actually helps the razor to glide, making it easier to shave without irritation and leaving skin smoother and softer. The Soothing After Shaving Balm $40.001.7 fl. oz. is a luxe, super-light-feeling balm that's easy absorbed, reported reviewers. It keeps skin hydrated helps to combat free- radicals, diffuses redness and helps heal irritations. We let our male reviewers know that constant shaving might be a must do, but it can irritate (and age) skin. Then they also appreciated the natural ingredients, including: portulaca, green tea and ginkgo biloba. Our reviewers also gave high marks to the Aqua-Gel Foaming Cleanser $30.00 6.8 fl. oz. This gel cleanser, good for all skin types, has tea tree oil to soothe and calm, while soponario naturally foams and cleanses, and citric acid clarifies and lightens. They liked the lavender scent (calming!). Pevonia men's products are simple to use and accomplish, offer many skincare bennies, and a spa-like shaving experience, without having to use too many products. These will help a man smell great, look great, and feel great.
ZAR for Men by Indigo Wild is a simple, pure pleasure. Your special man will exclaim: "Oh, that's good!" when he experiences the spicy blend of citrus and sandalwood. The scent is citrussy as well as spicy, so it still works in the warmer months. We like the plastic bottle of Mens Aftershave Tonic $13.50 4.5 fl. oz with it's "grey label, and push button cap. Pure essential oils, aloe vera extract, witch hazel, vegetable glycerin, and other good-for-your-skin ingredients make shaving a pleasurable ritual, instead of a chore. There's also an all natural Mens Soap $5.30 3 oz that is scented with the satisfying spicy, ZAR fragrance. The ridged, beeswax colored bar has a goats milk base mixed with glycerin, essential oils, herbs, and natural colorings. Give ZAR, and you'll look like a big shot, without spending a lot. For more than 40 years, Guinot Paris has produced high quality products. Armed with this information, it's not a stretch to understand why the Guinot Très (that's "very" in French) Homme skincare line is not only effective, but a great choice for a man who cares about the health and appearance of his skin. The entire line comes in a gray plastic tubes with square, maroon labels and caps, and silver lettering--sophisticated and masculine. Our male reviewers tried the Facial Cleansing Foam $28.00 5.02 oz., a gentle cleanser that deep cleans with allantoin to soothe, chitin to soften and moisturize, extract of witch hazel (an astringent), extract of bio-ecolia (to rebalance) and menthol, to refresh. They liked the refreshing menthol feel, and the way and said it did a good job of cleansing face without drying it out. The Moisturizing and Soothing After Shave Balm $36.00 2.06 oz. is a luxe, soothing cream with a clean, light, woodsy scent that soothes and comforts skin, aprez shaving. It also hydrates and nourishes, with Vitamin E and other ingredients that give TLC to a man's face. The Facial Exfoliating Gel $30.00 2.5 oz. made just for men, makes his skin smoother, clearer, and softer. Silica grains exfoliate, Jojoba microspheres exfoliate, soften and moisturize, while extract of birch purifies and tightens pores and glycerin also helps to moisturize and soften. Used once or twice a week, this not only makes a man's skin look clearer and vibrant, it also aids the shaving of difficult skin. Everyone liked the clear, non-greasy, fresh-smelling gel and the fresh, invigorating scent. He'll find that it's so pleasurable to use, he'll use it more often. We like Weleda products, so we were particularly glad to learn that they have products just for men. The Weleda Shaving Cream $9.95 2.5 oz comes in a tube, and has a clean scent. Our reviewers reported a great, close shave, and soft skin, afterwards. That might just be due to the good-for-your-skin ingredients such as goat's milk, almond oil, and botanicals that help tone the skin and reduce irritation apres shaving. And, there's also a nice After Shave Balm $20.00 2.4 oz in a striking, cobalt blue bottle (but we wish they'd switch to plastic around the bathroom). It has a clean, clear scent, too. Extracts of organic chamomile and myrrh soothe skin irritation, while biodynamic aloe vera gel and organic jojoba oil moisturize. He may not know this, but he will notice how great his skin looks and feels after he's used these products. The Skin Tech Easy Shaving Foam $5.99 6.8 fl. oz, by Lumene (new to our reviews) is a surprise "find" for men, who want good skincare, at a very modest price. They truly were impressed with a low foaming shaving lotion in a can, that sets up a man's beard for a close, comfortable shave and can also be used as a daily cleanser. Our reviewers reported their faces were super-smooth and that shaving with this product made their razors, glide effortlessly. Scandinavian super-antioxidant pine extract helps to moisturize, condition, and protect his skin, even if it is sensitive. They also liked the Skin Tech Sensitive After-Shave $8.99 3.4 fl. oz. This light cream comes in a glass bottle (it probably would be better for the guys in plastic) and it is fragrance and alcohol-free. Reviewers reported that their skin felt great, and any redness or razor burn was quickly eliminated after applying this one. They were intrigued by the Deep Cleanse $8.99 3.4. fl. oz, a gentle exfoliator for men that also helps prevent blackheads and reduce inflammation of hair follicles caused by shaving. None had tried an exfoliator before and were a bit confused about how to use it, but we saw the results--glowing, clear looking skin that even they noticed. This line also has two moisturizers..both were tested, but not used long enough to draw any conclusion other than the entire line, used together, helped make a vast improvement in the look and feel of the reviewer's complexions.
HANDS, FEET AND NAILS:
The Summer 2006 Collection $8.00/each by Essie makes wearing sandals, even that more fun, as we can paint our nails with glossy, long-lasting, Essie polishes! The collection has cheerful colors that partner perfectly with the season's hottest trends. Shades run from soft and light such as "Spaghetti Strap," a light warmed pink, and "Bikini with a Martini," a gorgeous, sheer, opalescent, amethyst and moves into brighter colors such as "Infatuated," a saturated, glossy watermelon and "China Doll," a glam. shimmery, medium-toned lilac (Essie has a wedding collection of sophisticated nudes--see our MAY column, but I think this would make a beautiful color for a bride and her attendants, too). There is also "Calypso, a deep, blue-toned fuchsia, and Flirt, a bright crimson. These are all super-hip for Summer, but you will probably find yourself reaching for them as Summer fades, too.
Good things come in small packages..especially if it is a Glosswear Nail
Enamel Mini $8.00 by Clinique. These limited edition, .23 fl. oz
bottles of one-coat, non-irritating, glossy polishes come in six summer-worthy colors in
nudes, tawnies, pinks, and violets, that match Clinique's popular Glosswear
for Lips! They're small enough to pop into a bag for touch-ups, and
generously-sized enough to use for a couple of months. We love the easy application and
long wear that free up our time to do other things (besides get manicures). The colors are
lovely, but standouts are the ladylike "Kitten
Pink," a subtly-sparkling, beige-y pink that is universally flattering and would make
a pretty bridal color. Ditto "Cabana Crush," a deep, romantic
rose-flecked-with-gold shimmer. "Treasure," is a gorgeous, browned-pink flecked
with gold--perfect now and with a tan, later on. Ditto for "Sunset," a shimmery
copper-brown.
Pantina Nail Lacquer $3.00, designer for the "youth market" comes in a squat, rounded bottle with perky polka-dots on the cap, Inside, however, is a surprisingly, seriously good polish. There are only three colors (we tried "Cimora," a glossy, golden nude shimmer that looks like pure sunshine in a bottle), but they have UV protection, Vitamins C & E (powerful antioxidants to preserve and protect your nails), and a quick-dry formula that leaves nails nicely covered and shiny, fast! GREAT HAIR!: When we spied the cool looking hair accessories from Goody (new to our review this column) we couldn't help but exclaim, Oh! Goody Goody! The limited edition, Global Fusion collection (inspired by African, Spanish and Indian influences) will help you to feel fashionable even when it's hot and humid. This lovely collection, reminiscent of unique items from craft shows and trendy boutiques, are so modestly priced so you can afford a bunch! Everybody needs a hair band (thick, thin, and fabric) for Summer. They're easy to wear and always chic. They also hold back bangs and fly-aways. At over 2" the "Weaved Headband" $5.99 is your chic-est choice. It has tiny strips of brown leather are woven together for a basketweave effect that is casual and chic. The "Snake Skin Headband: $3.99 is the thinnest at less than 1/4" and made of sleek, lavender-tinted snakeskin--perfect for the office. We also like the romantic fabric headbands $3.99 (elastic in the back keeps them on) in sheer fabrics (ours was a soft taupe, with a small, removable flower pin attached). Also perfect for Spring to Summer are the Beaded Salon Clips $4.99-- pretty chrysanthemums of oval beads with round beaded centers in soft gold, charcoal grey or cinnabar, add beautiful accents to hair either with a spring-loaded small metal clip, or larger, on a ponytail elastic. Speaking of ponytails, sleek and chic ones were seen on the runways and are so right for the warmer weather. Glam yours up, instantly, by securing yours with a ponytail elastic with a large, silky Rose Flower $4.99 (ours had a dreamy, soft golden color that would be perfect for weddings and all sorts of romantic events), or a sexy, sheer, large organza flower with beaded center (ours was lavender). These have pinbacks so you can remove them from the pony elastics and wear them as a fashion accent on clothes, too. We will be reviewing more Goody hair accessories in our July column--watch for them! Clear Moisture Instant Polishing Prep $10.95 by Redken is a great new leave-in cutting, moisturizing, and de-tangling product for stylists, men, women...everyone! A few spritzes of the blue, plastic, tote-able,pump bottle dispenses micro-sized moisture droplets to provide maximum, even coverage of your hair with apricot oil, glycerin, and other nourishing ingredients while it detangles normal or dry hair. We liked the clean, light scent and the lightweight feel. The benefits are instant, and easy to see...soft. shiny, conditioned hair...without fly-aways or a shred of heaviness! If you like the sleek ponytail look, this will help contain those pesky fly-aways, too. This easy conditioner/styler tool is great for men as well...but be sure to ask him to share! We'll be reviewing more Redken from their UV Rescue line in our July column--watch for it.* enter our Spring Contest--you could win the entire Redken UV Rescue line--just in time for Summer! Drop Dead Straight $20.00 by Philip B. sounds downright dangerous, but what you'll actually find when you squeeze out a bit of this clear gel is that it's a nifty way to keep curly and/or wavy hair soft, sleek, and de-frizzed during the upcoming hot, humid summer months. Simply apply a quarter to a half-dollar sized amount of the straightening baume to clean, towel-dried hair. Work it into your hair in sections, from root to ends (I didn't, I'll admit--but I still got great results) and then immediately blow dry or wet style. My hair looked soft and shiny and perfectly controlled...and it didn't frizz up in that evenings' rain shower. The product information listed all sorts of exotic-sounding ingredients (eg. pure extracts of matricaria, althea, horseradish combine with squalane polymer) but what you really need to know is that is does a great job of making even usually frizzy, hard to handy, unruly hair, look shiny, tamed, and beautiful. You'll also be happy to know that this product washes out quickly and easily, without leaving memories of it, behind. TIP: for best results with any blow-out, use a round, boar bristle styling brush for best results. We first reviewed Ojon a year ago, in our Spring 2005 column. We gave high marks to these products, created with the palm nut oil extracted from the tropical Ojon Tree from the rainforest of Central America. The Ultra Hydrating Shampoo $18.00 8.44 fl. oz and Conditioner $22.00 8.44 fl. oz.gave our reviewers shiny, soft, silky, manageable hair scented with a strong, exotic, slightly spicy scent. The products make hair super soft and smooth, but not greasy. Now can buy a Try Me 5 Piece Hair Ritual Kit $45.00 --the perfect way to try out this luxe line (or give it as a gift-it is nicely boxed). The kit includes a 1.35 oz Restorative Hair Treatment, 2 fl. oz Ultra Hydrating Shampoo, 2 fl. oz Ultra Hydrating Conditioner, 0.85 fl. oz Revitalizing Mist, and an 0.85 fl. oz Shine & Protect Glossing Mist. As I already mentioned, the shampoo and conditioner won high marks. My personal favorite, however, is the Shine & Protect Glossing Mist, housed in a slim, portable, plastic pump bottle. Just one spritz, and my hair suddenly came to life, brimming with instant, gorgeous, dazzling shine. For those who have colored hair, this also works to protect and retain the color. I liked everything, to be perfectly honest. These are great products with an unusual and exotic scent. GREAT PRODUCTS FOR BATH AND BODY: Trish McEvoy #9 Blackberry & Vanilla Musk has been a fave scent of the Advice Sisters for years, now. For Summer, there's nothing better to add to your scent collection than a lavishly fragranced Bath and Shower Gel #38.50 5 fl. oz. The uplifting fragrance is bright and fruity, and just a hint of spicy. The lavish, foaming gel cleanses nicely, leaving skin pampered and with a veil of scent. It may have been made for a woman, but the sweet blackberry and vanilla touched with musk and white rose actually seem to appeal to men, as well (go figure!). We love the clear, square plastic bottle with black and silver top, that adds classic chic to any bathroom, too. Yummy yummy! New to our reviews this column is LaylaCoco. Men and women alike will love the fruity-coconut scents, reminiscent of a beach vacation! Layla Coco Pineapple Kiwi Body Scrub $15.00 4 oz. (photo) helps you to get rid of those dry, dead skin cells while shea butter, sugar, honey and Vitamin E leave your skin soft and smooth. It's gentle enough to use on a daily basis, and with that incredible scent, you'll want to! Everyone in your family, including those special men, will feel like moisturizing their bodies more often when they try the great smelling Coconut Milk Glycerin soap $6.00 4.25 oz bar. The thick, ivory-colored bar will be a big hit, and your skin will feel smoother than ever. For seriously dry skin (yours and his, try a finishing touch of Coconut Shea Butter Hand & Body Cream $30.00 8 oz, $18.00 4 oz. Shea butter is the thing for super-dry or chapped skin--even on heels and elbows. Unlike some shea butter products however, this cream smoothes on easily and absorbs quickly without leaving an oil slick behind. You'll get an instant lift for itchy, dry skin, and the coconut scent is divine (it's available in yummy pineapple kiwi and coco mango as well). TIP: apply this one as you're stepping out of the shower and your skin is still moist--the cream will attract moisture from the air, while pathenol and vitamin E help soften --even on feet and heels (remember, sandals season is here).

M.A.C. Cosmetics, coveted by
fashionistas of all ages, has two new collections, debuting this month:
"Lure," a shimmering look will help you turn heads at any special
event, while "Bait," features a creamy, subtle look that's perfect
for now through the Summer. We will be reviewing products from "Bait" in our
July/August column--so be sure to watch for them! The focus of the Lure collection
is shimmering colors that remind us of mermaids. Even the compacts are a dreamy,
sea-green, instead of M.A.C.'s signature black. Make eyes sizzle with Eye
Shadow $13.50 in six seascape shades in lustre, perle, and sparkle formulas.
"Mancatcher" is a pale lilac
with a frosted, purple pearl that works day or evening. My personal picks are "Idol
Eyes," a shimmery, silvery violet with gold lustre and "Sea Myth," an
off-white with pink pearl frost that can be used as a highlighter, or a lid color. For a
burst of color, "Aquavert" paints lids a pale yellow green with a hit of while
pearl. Add a thick, romantic fringe to your eye creation with a few coats of M.A.C.
Pro Lash $10.00 in "Coal Black," a deep, true black in a formula that
won't quit on you when you are ready for your "closeup."TIP:
this eye look is enhanced with the addition of a kohl eye liner such as Fluidline
$14.50 or with a shadow-as-liner, applied with a good Flat Definer Brush
(#212 $18.50) or a smaller, Angled Brow
Brush #208 $18.50 Long, sexy lashes are either something you're born with, or something you create with a great product..and one to try now is from Estée Lauder. Illusionist Intense Maximum Curling Mascara $21.00 is debuting this month. much to the joy of ladies with lashes that need a bit of help. A few strokes of the (almost magic) mascara wand made my lashed amazingly long, curly and luxe. It was truly amazing! My lashes looked and felt great, but just as importantly, they didn't feel sticky or weighed down with a lot of product, thanks to a cutting-edge formula. The brush is worth a mention, too as it made application super easy and smooth. I tried "Intense Black," a dark, strong deep color, no messing around! There is also an intense brown and an intense blue which I didn't try. It isn't a stretch to assume they're just as great. Late night? The Rest Assured Luminizing Wand $22.00 by Tarte is a great little beauty helper. One side of wand holds a soft, matte, nude-pink liner pencil to brighten bleary eyes (apply in the corners of your eye). The other side has a creamy, pearly, sheer pink highlighter wherever you need a bit of lightness (eg. lids, crease, under brows, and even dabbed on your cheeks). Both are long lasting and gentle to your skin. You may feel weary, but you won't look it.
Do you long for a change from pencil and liquid eye liners that force you to create a harsher, just-so line? Stila has a great product -- Smudge Pot $16.00, that will give you a multiple options. This is a intensely colored eyeliner/shadow in gel in a generously-sized pot, with a consistency slightly harder than a usual gel. You can apply it as a liner, either with a liner brush for a precise, long-lasting line, or smudge it with your fingers for a softer line or an all-over, smoky look. Reviewers reported that theirs lasting all day long, even when the weather was humid and heating up. TIP: be sure you use a good liner and blender brush with these for a more precise and easy application. Stila has great brushes, too! We tried "Copper Shimmer" which is new for Summer (it actually looks like a deep brown/plum to us) but the Stila Smudge Pots are available in 10 other shades as well. For a touch of romance, try one of the Floating Eye Shadows $16.00. A wanded tube holds liquid shadow that goes on wet and sheer. It blends and layers nicely, and dries super fast to leave shimmery, long-lasting color. We tried "Peach Splash," a light, shimmery peach that would be especially romantic for brides. There's also "Gold Dew, Pink Drizzle and White Mist." Enhance romance (well, romantic eyes, at least) with a unique, sheer, wet-look mascara not surprisingly called Wet Mascara $12.50. The blue (or green) mascara is a water-based gel that looks like a precious gem in the clear, spiral-wanded mascara tube. However, on your eyes, it gives your lashes a very sexy "wet" look, as if you've just emerged from a dip in the ocean or pool. The color is just ever so slightly tinted (no, your lashes won't look grass green or bright blue). I used green over a light brown--the effect is subtle, but definitely, inviting! A fun product that will lift your Spring and Summer eye look to another level--effortlessly.
Pantina is a nifty, new cosmetics company with a young-at-heart vibe, and prices that'll make you feel like you've gone back a decade or so. Their Spring Look Book $6.00 is a slim, cardboard compact with magnetic closure containing three shimmery cream shadows, and a split pan of two cream eyeliners. The products contain Vitamins C & E, and the cream to powder products apply easily and feel lightweight, not heavy or greasy. The fragrance-free formula means that most women, even those with sensitive eyes, will be able to wear these without worry. We tried the collection called "Be Jeweled," containing a silvery grey and blue, a shimmery, greenish brown, and a dual pan of eyeliner including a deep, metallic blue, and a classic black. The mini brush with sponge applicator and liner in one, is a nice touch. One new eye shadow is great, but 88 new shadows is a fashionistas dream! The 88 shade pro.pallet by Matesse $39.99 comes in a sleek, shiny, black plastic compact with (pinch me!) a whopping 88 small pots of intense powder shadow in shimmers, mattes, and perles, with colors ranging from white to black, with browns, greens, blues, purples, rusts, oranges, pinks, roses, apricots, greys and yellows in every hue you can think of. The colors are good quality, smoothing on softly and smoothly. Most are fairly opaque, but they're also blendable, for an seemingly infinite number of eye looks to last you a long, long, time! Matesse, the in-house brand of the Rickys chain of beauty-oriented stores, is known for cutting edge colors and products that make quality and high fashion accessible to everyone from celebs and stylists, to teens on a tight budget (and everyone in-between). This is our first review of Matesse products --we like! May and June bring us out to face the public, at all sorts of special events (eg. weddings, graduations, parties). A good source of romantic makeup for our reviewers is Black Radiance. You do not have to be a women of color to wear these products, and you'll be happy to know that the products appear to be cheap and chic! The Starry Eyes Collection $4.99 for example, is a compact with small interior mirror containing four long-wearing, creme to powder eye shadows. These iridescent shadows can be worn sheer for daytime, layered with more color and perle for evening. We tried Temptress" featuring two deeper shades for lid or contour (mauve and brown) and two lighter shades for lids and highlight (apricot-t-gold, and lilac). The look is soft, glam and romantic. There's also a "Seductress" collection featuring sienna, olive green, deep pink and pewter). The Limited Edition Shimmer Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner $18.00 in "Bronze Shimmer Ink" from Bobbi Brown may at first seem like a bit of a splurge, but this highly pigmented gel in bronze-y-brown, with it's subtle metallic shimmer, and the water-resistant, long lasting formula that fashionistas love, makes this one a must-have. The color glides on easily with a liner brush, without smearing or creasing, allowing you to make a precise line, or go for a smudgy, softer look. This new color is just divine--so right to compliment skin-kissed skin and so glam, any time you wish! For more Summer wear-ability, try the new, (and really nice) NO-Smudge Mascara $20.00 in either Brown, or Black. The innovative formula lengthens, won't clump or flake, is long wearing and water-resistant--perfect for June brides and when the weather heats up, but beautiful, any time you put it on and of course, it lives up to it's name--it won't smudge! We will be reviewing more Bobbi Brown Summer products in our July/August column, so watch for them! Du Wop is known for it's lip enhancing products, but they have products that plump up other parts of your face, as well, such as your eye lashes. DuWop Lashlacquer $18.00 is a dual-ended, buildable mascara containing a conditioning mascara on one side, and a water/smudge resistant topcoat on the other. What's nice about this mascara is that it is not only resin-free so it's good for sensitive yes, but the top coat (the one that helps make the product water resistant) sits on top of your colored lashes, so waterproofing chemicals are not sitting right on your lashes--just on top of them. This also makes the mascara easier to remove, so don't be afraid to customize the length and thickness with more layers! We liked the slim design and the three colors: "Brown Black; Plum Black; and Carbon Black." This product will be especially welcome in the summer, when the weather gets hot and sticky and can cause a non-waterproof (or resistant) mascara to run. This is one of our picks this month for a makeup bag "must-have!"
UNFORGETTABLE, ROMANTIC LIPS: In the summer, it's really nice to be able to to "set it and forget it" when it comes to lip color. One that works particularly well and is waterproof, is the Rise & Shine Lip Stain/Plumping Gloss $21.00 by Tarte. This dual-ended beauty tool is one to treasure. One side holds a pink lip stain that gives lips a naturally rosy tint (and it lasts, for hours). The other side holds a shiny, plumping lip gloss that has ingredients to stimulate collagen on the cellular level, making lips full and sexy. If that's not enough, the long wear and natural look means your romp through the waves will leave your lips as perfect as when you applied it. We think this is a must-have for your beach tote.
We love high-shine lip glosses, but sometimes they don't last, and some that do are so sticky they're uncomfortable to wear. Estée Lauder's High Gloss Lip Gloss $16.00 solves the situation with a patent-leather type gloss that lasts, but is comfortable to wear. Even better, the slim, squeeze tube of gloss has good-for-your-lips ingredients that moisturize and condition, while they give them a sexy gleam that lasts for hours. I love the 14 colors and the easy to apply, slant tip applicator. For Summer you can't go wrong with "Bronze," a neautral shot with gold shimmer that makes lips shine like gold, inside or out. We also like "Jewel," a deep berry (this one seems to have a bit more color) that stains lips with the sexiest, berry shine you'll find, anywhere. For a natural and warm glow, "Flamingo" is a peachy-pink that adds mostly shine and shimmer with just a touch of peach, and flatters palefaces to deep tans). This gloss mixes cutting-edge technology with the best of beauty-it's a sure winner--a must have!
We love Stila's high quality and always-chic lip colors and glosses, but this month I'm particularly excited about their Lip Glaze Sticks $18.00 that are slim enough to pop into a pair shorts or a tiny tote. While they are available in the same hues and Stila Lip Glazes, they're a bit more shimmery--yay! The chubby pencils are filled to the brim with soft, glossy, super-sheer, shimmery color that make lips look full, sexy, and better-than-bare. We tried "Apricot" which adds the merest tint of apricot to your lips, but there are a dozen sexy shades to choose from. You'll also get a plastic sharpener to keep yours in top shape. Another easy to apply and fun to use product that's perfect for warmer weather is Stila Liquid Lip Polish $20.00. A chubby, click-it pen with a brush tip holds a long-wearing, lip color and shiny gloss in natural-looking, classic shades that color and shine in one slick of the pen! Use it alone for a casual look, or slick it over a deeper color for shine and glam. I particularly liked "Bright," a limited edition bright pink. If you love Stila as much as we do, don't worry, we'll be reviewing even more Stila products in our JULY column...so watch for them! Reviewers couldn't get enough of Trish McEvoy Lip Color $21.00 in "Buff." This creamy, luxurious feeling lip color leaves lips moist and beautifully colored with a warm, glam, peach. And we also all loved the newest Lip Gloss $22.00 in "Sexy." A subtle, pinkish nude with shimmery highlights glows on lips, reflecting the light, and making this oh-so-sexy wet-look shiny gloss live up to it's name (sexy, that is). Even better, this simmeringly sexy gloss goes on feeling silky and smooth, and stays put? Rock it at the beach, the pool, the office...need we say more? Get your own copy of the bi-monthly, Advice Sisters Enews by Email CLICK HERE We love it when a compact is lightweight enough to lighten our handbags. One such compact is the Sultry Lips Collection $4.99 by Black Radiance. The lightweight compact has a see-through top so you don't have to guess what's inside. We tried Shades of Pink (there's a plum version, too) and loved the nicely sized rectangles of glossy color. There's a hot pink, browned pink, rose pink, and clear pink. The colors are shiny, moist-looking and smooth, applied with your own lip brush or the dual-wanded mini brush that has a liner tip on one side, a flat brush for applying color, on the other. Blend the colors together, or wear them alone. No matter what your skin tone, you'll love the glossy, sexy look.
Lure your fans, with a light and pearly Lipstick $14.00 from the M.A.C. Cosmetics "Lure" collection. All four of these are dreamy and romantic. "Stroke of Lust" is a lovely rose pink with subtle lustre that would be perfect for brides. I also like "Lure," a sheer, silky burgundy with a hint of shimmer. There's also "Goddess," a super frosty, pinkish beige, and "Pretty Please," a barely there, pearled pink. The "Lure" Collection features green plastic packaging, and the iconic black M.A.C. box is imprinted with iridescent, green lettering as well. The famous silky, wet-look shine Lipglass $14.00 adds a shimmery, shiny compliment (with a slight, vanilla-y scent) to the lipsticks and on their own. "Bait" is a stunner -- a cool, powder-light pink infused with gold glitter that diffuses the light and makes lips look sexy, full and sparkly. There's also a pinky peach, a bright magenta, and a frosty, milky white with red pearl.
Laura Mercier's Foundation Powder $40.00 gives the kind of full coverage you are craving..especially if you are attending a special event and you need your complexion to look flawless...and stay that way. This powder foundation goes on with a sponge either wet (for even more coverage than a liquid foundation) or dry (for good, opaque coverage) or a puff (to reduce shine and as a touch-up over other products) since both tools are included). Even those of us with super-dry skin liked the way this foundation looked and felt. There are seven shades to suit light, medium and dark complexions, in a variety of tones. There are only two words for this product: "simply sensational" (and worth the cost). We also think you'll want the Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder $30.00 in "Translucent" (for all skin tones) or Ivory, and Beige." This generously sized jar of loose powder contains French "cashmere" talc and a special, light-reflecting ingredient that gives your face a sheer, silky look and feel and a "soft-focus" appearance that minimizes fine lines & imperfections (and sets foundation and reduces shine, too).. If it's been a while since you replaced your loose powder, now is the time, and this is a great choice. There's nothing we like better than new products from Trish McEvoy--always chic, always high performance, and they always help us look great and feel great, too. For a dewy complexion, Face Shine $32.00 is a sure thing. This creamy, glimmery product gibes you a natural looking sheen that is truly romantic. We tried "London," a romantic, golden, sheer pink that would makes any complexion, special. But there's also a gold, and a tawny. These do not come in compacts...purchase the Medium Beauty Charger separately. TIP: Sweep this just on cheeks, or all over your face (even temples and forehead)-and add more or less and you like--experiment! A great concealer is a must-have, whether you're going for your "closeup" moment (eg. wedding or graduation photos) or you just want more flawless looking skin. Trish McEvoy's latest and greatest: Even Skin Concealer $35.00 comes in her signature, matte black compact. Two shades of creamy concealer quickly cover under-eye circles, skin discolorations, and blemishes, without breaking through when your body chemistry heats up. The colors are blendable so you can get just the right tone for your skin, at any moment. It's also enriched with chamomile to soothe, and comes in three shades, and extra coverage formulations. TIP: you can apply this product with your fingertips, but applying and blending with a brush (Trish McEvoy makes great ones) will give you more precise and even coverage.
Soft mid-tone pink with silver pearl Bobbi Brown Shimmerbrick has been popular ever since the first color combo came out on the market, a few years ago. Now there are five. For Summer, the new, Brownie Shimmer Brick $38.00 will be your must-have.Five different shades of luxurious, shimmery, pearlized pigments nestle in strips like a sunset, across a large, square, shiny black mirrored Bobbi Brown logo compact. Run a soft, blush or powder brush across all, and treat yourself to a sheer, shimmery, natural looking sun-kissed glow with layerable color that you control for more (or less) intensity. TIP: if you like the look of blush, or need a bit more color, this one will work well layered over both neutral and deep blush colors. You can also use these colors, row by row, for contour or even for an on-the-fly, eye shadow. This is one of those products that once you try, you'll be hooked! Shake it Baby! $6.00 by
Pantina is a shimmer face and body shimmer powder-in-a-brush. We love
these--they're a clean and neat way to apply and tote your special glow, where ever you
go. Just shake, the attached jar, pop up the attached brush, and dust on the
shimmer! We tried "Angel Shimmer," a sheer, white powder that adds the
perfect, special-occasion highlight/sparkle to cheeks. There's also a bronzing color and a
nude shimmer. Even better, this powder contains Vitamins C & E (antioxidants to
help protect your skin) and a very light and clean fragrance. The bottom of the powder
container screws off, so you could actually refill it if you wished. We loved this
one...and we loved the price...and we are sure you will, too.
Do you spend too much time in the sun, and now you're developing sun spots? You can fight back, with Laura Mercier's Flawless Skin Illuminating Brightener $68.00 1 fl. oz. This is a serious skincare treatment--a cutting-edge serum that targets the formulation of sun spots, while brightening and helping to produce a smoother, more even toned complexion. We can't tell you exactly how it works, but it is rich in nourishing, deep sea water, and the active ingredients help the product to penetrate deep into the skin, which, in turn, helps to prevent the formation of Melanin (which, in turn, produces dark spots). Apply to face, neck and décolleté after cleansing, and follow with a moisturizer, once a day. Another serious skincare plus is the Flawless Skin Renewal Serum. This one $75.00 1.5 fl. oz is for all of us who are exposed to air pollution, UV exposure, and an unbalanced diet. Why do you need this? Simply, because the active ingredients minimize surface pigmentation (we take that to also mean age spots) and it stimulates cell turnover and discourages the formation of wrinkles, while encouraging fresh skin cells to form. If you use this with a moisturizer, it is a one-two punch, allowing the moisturizer to penetrate deeper into your skin tissues. After cleansing, simply warm two to three pumps of Renewal Serum in your your hands, and massage into the face, neck and décolleté, then follow with your chosen moisturizer. We didn't use these products long enough to see dramatic results, but we can definitely recommend them. If there is "hope in a jar" Laura Mercier has found it and bottled it! If your skin reacts to products, your skin may be sensitive, even if it is also oily, dry, combo or normal. Luckily Aubrey Organics has a line of products specifically for people with sensitive skin. All of their products are completely natural--no synthetic chemicals of any kind are used in their formulas. The Travel A Go-Go Set $25.00 is a good way to discover the line. The kit contains 2-ounce bottles of Vegecol Facial Cleansing Lotion, Vegecol with Aloe Alcohol-Free Facial Toner, Vegecol with Aloe Moisturizing Cream, and a nice, 1 ounce jar of Vegecol with Aloe & Oatmeal Soothing Mask (*note- this is an exfoliating mask with little granules that help make skin soft and smooth--please remove it gently). We like the cardboard packaging with little plastic carry handle (there's a silhouette of a woman delicately carrying a handbag on the front of the "go-go" box). The clean- looking, white bottles with beige and green graphics inside, however, will appeal to both men and women. Medicalia was developed after four years of extensive research by Sylvie Hennessy of Pevonia Botanica, and her scientific team. There are a number of different lines in Medicalia, each serious skin care, and each addressing a specific skin situation (there are even lines with products for pre-operative and post-operative needs). Pump a bit of the liquid, Eye Makeup Remover $30.00 5 fl. oz onto a cotton ball, and you'll easily and quickly remove even stubborn makeup. After cleansing, dab on some Medi-Renew Eye Cream $63.00 1 oz. This gentle, unscented cream is a treat for your thin, sensitive and delicate eye area. It's got marine elastin, which helps to reduce fine lines and strengthen elasticity. We immediately felt the dry, tight skin under our eyes soften, and we knew we'd done a good thing. Men as well as women will like the simple, white plastic bottles with red and black lettering so we hope to review more of this line in future columns. If you get Medicalia products, be ready to share!
