If I learned anything from watching the Fall 2009 Fashion Week runway shows, it's that color is the must-have for this season. So this Advice Sisters Fall 2009 What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column is focusing primarily on what's new and trendy in Color Cosmetics and Fragrance for body and home. But you can't really do a great job without beauty tools, so we're featuring some of those, too. We have new suggestions for every budget. If you see something you like, go to The Advice Sisters® Exclusive What Works" Buyer's Guide where you can find access to products and purchasing information. Shop from home, save money and time, and even reduce your carbon footprint! MARVELOUS FALL MAKEUP - EYES: Last year, lips were the trendy focus (and they still are), but eyes and eyebrows are also going to be a big fashion story for Fall 2009. Here are some products The Advice Sisters think you might like to try:Clarins has developed a new mascara called Wonder Perfect Mascara $23.50 that may just be one of the most elegant mascaras I've ever tried. The mascara arrives in a substantial, oval-shaped, shiny silver tube with a nicely sized brush. Carnuba and rice plant waxes combine to volumize, lengthen and curl lashes, while Pro-Vitamin B5 protects and nourishes them. The color is intense and long-lasting, thanks to a high concentration of pigments (apply the wand beginning at the very base of your lashes, and get an eyeliner effect as well as colored lashes). Finally, a fixing polymer means your lashes will look lovely, longer. The mascara makes lashes longer, thicker and a slight more curled all in one sweep of the wand. And it's ophthalmologist and dermatologist tested so you can even wear it if you have sensitive eyes or wear contact lenses. One coat still washed off with soap and water. It comes in Wonder Black and Wonder Brown (both intense and gorgeous) but also in Wonder Blue. The blue is my favorite, not too light, not so navy you can't enjoy the flattering color. It's a changeup from the same-old, same-old, that will look trendy, not trashy. For Brows, Clarins has a new kit you'll want to consider: the Pro Palette Eyebrow Kit $35.00. Inside an impressive, silvery compact with large interior mirror are all the tools you'll need to style your brows at home no matter what color they are. There are three powder shadows: black, brown and blonde to mix, match, shape or emphasize your brows. You can use the two deeper colors as an eyeliner, as well. There's a nice strip of holding wax to keep your brows in place to use on natural brows, or after you're applied your brow shadow. If you have large or unruly brows, you won't believe what a difference just a dab of holding wax makes. There's also a strip of silky, flesh/pink shadow to use as a brow highlight. Also nestled into the kit is a mini tweezers, a mini eyebrow brush to groom brows, and a double-sided mini applicator with a slant tip and sponge tip. The entire kit is about the size of a pack of cards, but it will pack a lot of beauty and economy into it's travel-friendly compact. You won't want to travel without it, and you'll want it on your dressing table at home, too. Is $56.00 too much to pay for Eye Shadow? No, not at all, if it's the 5 Couleurs Palette in '#173 Night Butterfly" by DIOR from their Fall Look 2009 collection. This mirrored compact is an all-in-one wardrobe of colors that provides everything you need for Fall's trendy eye looks, at just a little over $11.00 per color. Even better, you get five plum-centric colors that help you create eye looks that range from mild and nearly nude for day, to sexy/smoky for night. The colors are in a perle finish, but two have just slight sheen: a deep taupe and a light violet, while a deeper purple and a dark wine, have a bit more sheen but still don't rival the shimmery shades of Summer. The diamond-shaped pan of deep charcoal/black powder is infused with a starry display of silvery glitter specks. A dual-tipped sponge applicator with thin and oval sponge tops, flank the sides of the compact. The luxurious powders are soft and blendable, intense, and easy to apply. Of course, they're long lasting and a joy to use. If your budget only allows for a little upgrade, you can still enjoy a new, DIOR Single Compact Ultra Smooth High Impact Eyeshadow $27.50 in a trendy shade like "#056 Argentic." This shade has a lovely, quilted embossing and a spray of silver glitter, but underneath is a pearled, pewter shadow that looks astounding on anyone's eyelids. Ditto "#486 Bronzy Night," pearled, deep bronze that can be won intense as a liner, or smudged out to a taupe-y bronze that makes warm skin simply glow ". Swipe or wipe one of these soft to smoky shadows on your lids, and blend well with a brush, for an instant update of a smoky eye that doesn't require hours of practice to get it right. These new colors are worth every penny --they're simply a "must-have." TIP: Brows are big this season. Dior's Ultra-Fine Precision Brow Pencil $28.00 in "Universal Brown" adds the definition to brows in seconds. Mine were nearly blonde by Summer's end, and not very noticeable but a few strokes and a quick blend of this twist-up pencil in an elegant, silvery case, darkened them just enough to make my brows stand out a bit and frame my face--an awesome enhancement that took no time at all. It's a step I won't ignore, again!
Revlon was founded in 1932, by Charles Revson and his brother Joseph, along with a chemist, Charles Lachman, who contributed the "L" in the REVLON name. The name is synonymous with fashion and beauty. If you're seeking a new palette of eye shadows, Revlon's ColorStay 12 Hour Eye Shadow Quad $6.99 in :Sunrise, Sunset" offers four of Fall's most popular colors in one compact: subdued shades of copper, purple, gold and mauve. The rectangles of pressed powder shadow are embossed with a diamond design that you can see through the peek-a-boo cover of the black compact. The color blends beautifully, even with a fingertip (there are two mini-applicators in the compact). While I didn't try it for 12 hours, the color stayed true and non cake-y all day long. That is a lot of ask from a product that costs less than lunch, but it delivers! There are 18 palettes in all, so you can afford to experiment! *this launches in October, so get ready to run and buy it then!
L'Oreal HIP High Intensity Pigments for Eyes $8.00 have been super-popular for several seasons, now. But for Fall 2009 they're launching a matte version with two shades of soft, blendable powder in a no-shine, no-shimmer formula that still offers bold color. Five new shades include: Animated "(medium blue and stark white); "Striking" (charcoal and bright yellow); "Dashing," (light peach and black); "Poppy" (brown a goldenrod) and my favorite for Fall "Perky," a gorgeous grass green paired with a deep blue-grey). There's a sponge-tipped application in the bottom half of the round compact with peek-a-boo lid that flips open (so no need to juggle the cap while you apply on-the-fly). These color combos were coordinated but if the duo seems too avant-garde (e.g. black and yellow or blue and white) just use them separately with other products. TIP: Eye Liner Pencils complete this look. Try HIP High Intensity Pigments Chrome Eyeliner $10.00 in black, silver, gold or violet and get a long-lasting, trendy, intense, metallic liner (I love the "Intense Violet" because this blackened violet goes with every color). Or, do a matte line with Extra Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner $8.49 in Black, Brown or Gray. This is a pencil that is extra creamy to create an intense, bold line in one stroke that looks like you did it with a liquid *it's supposed to last up to 16 hours and I didn't test that, but it certainly does stay put! If you love liquid liner but can't mange it well, this is the product for you! "Trendy" can work on a very tight budget. For example, the Metro Quartet Eyeshadows $3.99 by N.Y.C. New York Color It comes in two limited edition compacts, each featuring a rectangle of lid color and overall color, and longer strips of crease color and highlight. "Glamorous" has a pink and rose shimmer for lids, a deep rosed mauve crease color and a shimmery, silver highlight. ""Femme Fatale" has deeper grey and mauve lid colors, a berry-colored crease color, and a light nude highlight. The colors in these quartets are intense, and definitely "from the runway" and yet they average out to a mere dollar apiece! The packaging is a slim black rectangular compact with a clear window on the top, and each comes with a tiny, dual-ended sponge and brush combo. Small enough to fit into a makeup bag, these are a great find. TIP: finish the look with a swipe or two of Volumizing Mascara $3.99 in limited edition "Blackberry Brandy." The color is seriously wine-colored. Used sparingly (too much and you look like you have red-rimmed eyes) it adds a fun, avant-garde touch to your eyes. FALL LIPS: Bold, saturated color, especially in red or plum will be the easiest way to update your look. But nudes and sheers are another way to look modern, without having to resort to drama. Whether you adore gloss, or go more for opaque, saturated color, a few new lip products will perk up your look. Here are some of our favorites:
I love multi-tasking products, especially when it comes to color cosmetics. If I can tote one product that does at least two things, I can lighten my load and take a smaller purse, which also helps my shoulders and back. Stila Convertible Color $25.00 is a color-cream-in-a-compact that enhances lips and cheeks, equally. The non-greasy. sheer tint glows cheeks, but on lips, it provides opaque, creamy, lipcolor that rivals anything you'll find in a tube. The cute, round, mirrored compacts are embossed with girly flowers, and each is color-coded to the product inside. There are a number of (mostly) pink-oriented tones that draw inspiration from flowers, from deep Rose, to pink Petunia, to light, peachy, Gerbera, to bronze-y Camellia, and more to suit your mood and skin tone. A couple of these may be all you need for a week's worth of looks away, and at .15 oz, they're airport-friendly. Go for Fall's nude lip, or a bright, bold one, but you can't leave the house without lip color! Stila's Lip Enamel Luxe Gloss $36.00, launching in September, is sure to make a statement, no matter which of the six shades you choose.I like the brush/pen applicator, that lets you apply the intensely pigmented, bold, full coverage, long-wearing, patent-leather shine gloss smoothly and precisely. But this gloss doesn't just give "good lip," it can perhaps, actually deliver the feeling of happiness (who doesn't need more of that, these days)? The gloss contains rhodiola rosea, a botanical extract known to improve mood, working to optimize serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain. You'll also feed good about the conditioners and moisturizers with a blend of antioxidants, essential oils and phenolic compounds. I tried "Giggle," a neon-pink so bright it would make Barbie, drool, Yes, it really was intense, but you know what? I just loved it! Maybe it's the rhodiola rosea that makes me feel happy, but I am really excited about this gloss. Joy, Euphoria, and Ecstacy are other bold color choices (deep red. berry and plum). You can blot them down if the intensity and shine is too much. Happiness (light pink) and Nirvana (nude) are more subdued (In color, not intensity). You've got to get at least one!
Trish McEvoy is synonymous with "covet" for me, always. Their makeup is elegant, classic, edgy, or trendy, but no matter what the color or type, it's high-quality,high-performance, and with gorgeous packaging. I have the weakest spot for Trish McEvoy kits and palettes! But for now, for Fall, there's a Lip Gloss $22.00 that is just irresistable...and that's it's name: "Irresistable." The rounded, clear tube with silvery top has a brush tip for precise application. Before you ever open it, however, you can't help but ooh and aah over the sensationally shimmery, copper color of the gloss that is almost glittery, it is so full of light-catching particles. On lips, the minty-scented gloss adds a model-eque, "Milky Way" of starry, moisture-rich gloss. It makes even the dullest, driest lips, look amazing, with a sheer gloss of skin-flattering, glowy, bronze-y copper that works with any skin tone. You have just got to have one! Wear it alone, or over a Trish McEvoy's Sheer Lip Color $22.00. The new, all-shiny silver tube reveals a sheer wash of color that adds just a bit of tint, in a silky, moisturizing, pampering base that is also a "balm." There are currently nine of these lovely lip treats (mostly in pinks and berries), named after ritzy locales. Mine was 'LA," a true, medium peach that really flatters redheads and those with freckles. However, "Hong Kong" is a berry that works even better with Fall's palette. Back in June, I generated a flurry of excitement on the Advice Sisters Blog with a review of Huge Lips Skinny Hips by Purple Lab. The wanded gloss The lip gloss also has Vitamin B (to plump lips) natural lipids, meadowfoam and lemon peel oil (to hydrate and soothe), no parabens, a moist, long-lasting formula, and it will help diminish the appearance of tiny lines and lip wrinkles. The colors are natural intensity and the formula is not overly shiny, just moist. This gloss doesn't just beautify-- it also has Hoodia, a known appetite suppressant. No lip gloss is going to replace exercise and eating right, but if you apply a great lip gloss like this one, you may not want to mess it up with drinking and munchies at the next party you attend. The original six colors were Robinovitz's homage to her favorite icons and philosophies. Now there are two new ones: "Goji Berry Smoothie" (A shimmery, brown/berried plum so named for her favorite, antioxidant-rich breakfast drink) and "Limo to Lobby" (A perfect, cheerful, bright, sheer pink). TIP: In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, 20% of the proceeds will go to a triple negative foundation called Sealed With a Cure. Triple negative is a particularly aggressive strain of BC, if not treated properly. Blood oranges are yummy! Their small, orange skin reveals a rich, red fruit that has a taste unrivaled by any other citrus fruit. Perlier has captured a bit of that delight in an unusual, Blood Orange Fruit Gel Lip Gloss $19.95. An elongated, flattened teardrop-shaped plastic squeeze tube (with slant tip for easy application), showcases the deep rose color of a super-shiny, super-silky, lip gloss. This one, formulated with actual Sicillian blood oranges. The look is emollient and so silky! My lips felt fantastic after applying this, and they looked amazing, too. The nearly-clear gloss (there is a merge hint of orange/rose to it) coats unadorned lips with a patent-leather shine, but adds serious drama and dimension over your favorite lipstick. Even better, since this gloss has the flavor of the blood orange, you can treat yourself to the delicious taste, all year round. TIP: one way to make Fall's nude lip trend more user-friendly is to apply a shiny gloss like this one over the nude color--it makes the color-pop!
Click-it pens are the easiest, most portable, and travel-friendly way to apply lip color, but it's even better when the lip color is really nourishing. Clinique's latest is the Vitamin C Lip Smoothie Antioxidant Lip Colour $17.50. It not only has moisturizing shine and comes in eight fashionable shades, it has a blend of vitamins and antioxidants that can actually help keep your lips looking younger, longer. Key ingredients include a highly active form of Vitamin C (to help improve the look and feel of your lips) , shea butter and theobroma grandiflorum seed butter (for dryness and to add moisture). and antioxidants such as pomegranate (to protect lips against environmental stressors). The star is the trendy must-have power antioxidant, Acai Berry. If you use this lip product regularly, over time, it can actually help reduce the look of those fine lip lines, that can make you look older than necessary. The formulas range from opaque to shimmery. The color arrives on the tip of the click-it pen brush. I tried "#02 Nude-Tricious" a lovely, trendy nude that has just enough color and shimmery so lips look luscious, warm, and healthy, not washed out. The color is also buildable, and long-lasting. Other shades with "cute" names include: "Raisin the Bar;" Fig-a-Licious," "Rhubarbie," "Pink Me Up," Absolute Acai," "Mango-thon," and Goodness Grapecious. You'll find more than one of these, addictive! Modern lip looks for less are yours with the new Frankly Scarlett Collection from N.Y.C. New York Color. The hot reds, plums, and purples may be a passing fancy, but you won't feel bad putting these back in your drawer when it's time to try something new for Spring 2010. The Smooch-Proof Long Lasting Lip Color $4.99 is a dual-wanded tube with a color on one end, and a clear Seal & shine gloss on the other. The newest duos are "Red Stiletto" (a and "Frankly Scarlet." The former is perhaps one of the most perfect, universally flattering, bold reds I've ever tried. It is sexy and bold and everything you want in a movie star red, but it's not garish, goth, bloody or so cool warmer toned skins can't wear it. TIP: try the red without the shiny top coat that makes lips full, pouty and sexy, when you need a more conservative look. "Frankly Scarlett" is a deep, metallic mauve that also looks nice on a variety of skin tones. When you're wearing a deep color like these, a long-lasting, non-feathering product is a must! N.Y.C. New York Color has more traditional lipsticks, too Try "Berry Rich" for a deep, berried rose that works so well this Fall, or "Mousse," a shimmery, medium-deep nude. Budget-minded doesn't mean boring, Revlon's Super Lustrous Lipstick $7.99 is silky and luxe, even though it's modestly priced. The formula feels really silky and looks very moist on your lips, thanks to silk-enriched mega moisturizers and vitamins in Revlon's exclusive, 'LiquiSilk" Technology. Even better, Revlon doesn't disturb you with smells and tastes that you might not like. Their lipstick is fragrance and taste-free. There are 6 new shades that debut in October: Porcelain Pink, Ravish me Red, Fuschia Fusion, Va Va Violet, Berry Haute, and Choco-Liscious. All are intense and opaque - the style of the moment. Colors like Choco-Liscious (deep chocolate), Fuschia Fusion (bright fuschia) and Va Va Violet (deep violet) are dark, but you can pat them on as a stain. For those who are into the more nude look, Porcelain pink adds a shimmery pink to lips, but it's not a Summery pastel. This has more depth and intensity so it adds life to lips. "Berry Mauve" is a creamy, medium mauve that works well on cool complexions, and "Ravish Me Red" is a bold orange-red, but without any of the harshness or brassiness that makes lips look orange. You'll love them all!
MARVELOUS FALL MAKEUP - PALETTES & More: There's nothing better than a great makeup palette. The colors are coordinated for you so you can't get it wrong. They're usually a great value, too.
Stop by Misikko for a great deal on today's hottest flat irons like a CHI flat iron or from top brands like FHI Making a come-back into our reviews, Revlon has lots of fashion-forward items for Fall. One I particularly like is the Revlon Illuminance All Over Palette $6.99 that debuts in October. Created by Revlon's Global Make-up Artist, Gucci Westman. The packaging is simple but attractive: a pewter-y plastic rectangular compact with four clear "portholes" so you can see the colors: two for eyes, two for lips. The eye creams include a light peach and a shimmery, deep lilac that looks a bit bright in the compact, but it's so sheer you'll simply be applying a pretty wash of color. The lip colors are striking: a deep raspberry-red and a dark plum. These are intense, runway-ready colors, but if you're not into that deep, bold lip look, pat them on with a fingertip and you have a lip stain that is the easiest way to wear "dark" this season. This compact lets you "get the look" for less--it's a great choice. Women these days are always on the go. Busy women want to look beautiful, but they don't have all day to deal with products. beautyADDICTS, new to our reviews this column, say that their products are: "truly 'beauty made simple' – an elegant beauty system designed around the lifestyles, attitudes, and moods of today's women." They took a cue from the conventional "seasonal color story" and created four color groups of their own: GLOW, EXPRESS, MOTIVATE, and SEDUCE. I'm not quite sure how the names correlate with the color groups, but I tried the MOTIVATE group: Heather, berry, plum and pale pinks are the highlights of this palette. GLOW: features cool colors of lavender icy pink and cool bronze. EXPRESS: features buff/nudes, rose gold and bronze. SEDUCE features cool white, silver, black, grey, burgundy and ruby. I tried the GlimmerSheer $28.00 first, because I liked the way I looked: two halves of a circle, one shimmery, one clear, like gems. This is a multi-tasker. designed to highlight and luminize the eyes, face and cheeks. Each compact holds two unique formulas in complementary shades: Glimmer – a soft focus luminizing luster' and a crystal clear Luminizer. The shimmery highlight in a beautiful champagne looked great as a lid color, and made a stark, pearly, nude lip look. It also added just a bare hint of shimmer to my face. The clear Luminizer was stickier, best as a lip gloss or a clear, shiny eye gloss. Among the offerings in the Body Shop limited edition Pearlescent Makeup Collection is the Pearlescents Blush Trio $23.00. A round compact with a clear, plastic domed lid showcases a swirl of three blush colors that looks like modern art. There are two compacts, warm and cool: a "Warm Sunset," a warm peach, and "Cool Dusk," a cool pink. "Each compact has a slightly different pattern inspired by the decorative elements of nature. The blush itself contains moisturizing, organic cupuassu butter (from the seeds of the Amazon native cupuassu fruit), and Community Trade sesame oil (helps protect the skin). The look is sheer but buildable with enough shimmer to give your face a pretty glow, but not so much you feel like a club kid. You can use one color or a combo of two, or all three. I tried the cool combo, even though my skin is warm (as a reviewer, you don't always get to pick your color). I expected the cool pinks and mauve to look garish, but instead, I got a pretty, rosy glow that I love! These blushes are truly pretty...a must-have if you need a new blush for Fall. The Color Wheel Mosaic Blush Powder $4.99 by N.Y.C. New York Color, comes in two, limited edition colors: Scarlet Letter (bold berries and deep roses and mauves) and ""Plum Passion" (softer pinks, mauves and berries). Each clear, round, compact holds a generously-sized, oil/fragrance-free, pressed powder blush with chunks of four, complimentary shades. There's a slight shimmer, but it's not a "glowy" over-the-top look, and the powder is soft and easy to blend. The deeper compact is great for deeper complexions, and the lighter one will work on most everyone else. It's a way to update your makeup wardrobe even when you can't afford new designer jeans. The packaging is plain, but the product adds new life to your look. MARVELOUS BRUSHES, TOOLS & LITTLE HELPERS: Good brushes help you apply your makeup or fix your hair, like a pro. Even dime-store cosmetics, or simple hairstyles, look better when you've used the right tools. Once you invest in good brushes, cover them to keep dust and dirt out, and make sure they're not all jumbled on top of each other. Clean them often, with brush cleaner or a mild soap. Follow these steps for cleansing 1. Using warm water, dampen the hair on the brush. 2. Apply a very small amount of gentle soap, and lightly lather the bristles; 3. Rinse bristles until the water runs clean; 4. Reshape brush if necessary; 5. Lay flat on paper towel and dry overnight. Don't use a hair dryer to speed the process, you may ruin the brush!
Stila makes some of the best cosmetics brushes in the business. Here are some must-have makeup brushes (these are all from Stila) that you will want to add to your current brush collection: My favorite is the Eye Enhancer Brush #30 $32.00, a dual-tipped brush that gives you a two-for-one functionality. One end is softly angled to blend powder shadow from the lash line up to the crease. The other side has a rounded, pointed end to line beneath the eye and/or to add a "pop" of color to the center of lids. You can also use the pointy side as a detail brush, to precisely add color to the crease, or in the outer "V" of your lids, or for applying cream color in tiny bits. A classic shadow brush is the All Over Shadow Brush $22.00. The generously sized head of pony and goat bristles are gently graduated and tapered so that you can sweep and blend a lid shadow with almost no effort. The brush also lets you distribute the color smoothly and evenly. A good blush brush can help even a novice glow without an obvious "war paint" line of color. Stila's Blush Brush #1 $28.00 is a classic choice. Like the All Over Shadow Brush, this brush of dome-shaped and graduated black goat, lets you pick up and deposit soft and natural color to cheeks, without having to blend and push the color around. We gave this to someone who never applied blush before, and her results were as good as ours! For travel, a retractable brush that covers the bristles helps the brush stay clean and in shape. The Retractable Bronzing Brush #17 $26.00 with a soft, beautiful bristle of goat hair, blends powder bronzer evenly, giving your skin a natural glow that only a high-quality, well-shaped brush can offer. The metal case sheaths the bristles in a protective "cocoon," keeping it clean and in shape. The Retractable Powder Brush #31 $26.00 has a large head of super-soft bristles encased in a matte silver case. The head is shaped with a slightly tapered tip to allow a natural progression of blush onto your cheeks (instead of a straight stripe of color that lives a "war-paint" like look). TIP: Use this travel-friendly tool for blush, bronzer, or shimmer powder, too.
A primer is a must-have when you want your face to look it's absolute best, and stay that way for hours. And, if you're going to use one, why not make it multi-task as a moisturizer. And don't stop there, add SPF so it's sun-protective, too. Who's got a primer with all that? Stila does! Their Hydrating Primer SPF 15 $35.00 Hydrating Primer SPF 15 not only helps make your face a smooth canvas for foundation and other products, but it also has time-released skincare bennies. It helps hydrate and protect skin with Dermaxyl, for anti-aging and hydration, and time-released Hyaluronic acid spheres that plump the skin for a soft, moisturized feel, plus SPF 15 for daily use. The creamy lotion has a scent that quickly disappears, and a very light feel. If your skin is dry, you'll only remember you used it when your face still feels soft and moisturized, hours after you applied this. This works best for normal to dry skin, but no matter what your skin type, this product really helps foundation do it's job and look it's best. The 1.7 oz. silvery tube is travel friendly, too. This three in one product makes my list of must-haves for Fall.

FRAGRANCED ITEMS FOR BODY AND HOME: A great way to celebrate the change of seasons, is with a change of scent, chosen to reflect your lifestyle, as well as the season. Whether it's for your body, or for your home, there are plenty of options to suit every taste, and every budget:
The Summer is over, and maybe your skin is losing it's tan, and is a bit dried out from a season of sand, chlorine, etc. Caress comes to the rescue with a new Exfoliating Body Wash fit for a Queen, called Evenly Gorgeous 12 fl. Oz. It features burnt brown sugar and Karite Butter, enrobed in a pearly, glowing, golden bath gel that multi-tasks to cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize, so your skin has a smoother, softer, more even tone. You will also leave it softly fragranced with the slightly sweet and sensual smell of caramelized sugar. Who could resist that? The gracefully curved, plastic bottle with golden flip top is just $4.49 for 18 oz or $3.50 for 12 oz. Bottles. That’s a true bargain! And There’s a solid, Beauty Bar in two 4.25 oz. packs at $2.99 or 4-bars $4.49, 6 bars $6.49 and if you really need more, there's an 8-bar pack for $7.99. I've been fond of the caress line of body cleansers, moisturizers, exfoliators for the bargain price, but quality is in these products, too.
The best reason to purchase a fragrance is because you love the way it smells, but sometimes the packaging alone is enough to make you want the fragrance so much, you'll think about purchasing it even before you smell it!" That certainly was the case with the original Daisy by Marc Jacobs scent and several accessory items:: Daisy Eau de Toilette; Daisy Solid Perfume Ring and: Daisy Solid Fragrance Necklace . Launching this month there's a new version of the Daisy Scent; Daisy Silver Edition $88.00 3.4 fl. oz. Eau de Parfum Spray. The outer box is a shiny silver metallic cardboard, bordered in a pretty daisy chain of gold flowers. This outer box is chic and impressive, but there's something even better, inside. The front of the metallic glass bottle is unadorned, except for the words "Daisy" with "Marc Jacobs." The other side hasn't any writing and it looks like a sculpture. It is a bottle bouquet you can display anywhere in your home for a touch of whimsy (and a quick touch-up of the lovely scent). Created by Firmenich perfumer Alberto Morillas, this scent makes a statement, too.... on your skin. The Daisy Silver Edition features the same concentrated notes as the original, Daisy Eau de Parfum. The vibe is floral and feminine, but not overly sweet. There is fresh wild strawberry, violet leaves, and ruby red grapefruit, mixed with a floral heart of jasmine petals, violet petals, and gardenia. The florals, however, are tempered with a drydown of creamy musks, that leave you with just enough sensual notes to keep sniffing your pulse points. The scent is noticeable, but not intrusive. It's light and fresh: a modern floral. But it's not girly or grandma--it's chic and modern, with enough substance to work with heavier fabrics when the weather cools down. *more on the Advice Sisters Blog!

Aug. 15-18, 1969 were the days of Woodstock -- a rock concert so much more than just music, it was the moment that defined a generation. I don't know that The Body Shop created Love Etc... Eau de Parfum $29.50 1.60 fl. oz., $24.00 30 ml. to celebrate Woodstock, but the rainbow-colored pinwheel of hearts on the white, outer, carton, reminded me of Woodstock. Inside, however, is a tapered rectangular bottle of clear glass with a simple, shiny gold top. It holds a nearly-clear, light floral fragrance that will help you feel good and "let the sunshine in" no matter what you are wearing, or where you are going. The key notes are jasmine, with vanilla and sandalwood. You might think that's going to be sweet or incense-y, but the blend, created by Dominique Ropion, just feels light, and right for daily wear. The fragrance starts out feeling like a typical, fruity floral, but the drydown brings out the vanilla, and a hint of spice from the sandalwood. This Eau de Parfum is the first to include Community Trade alcohol made from organic sugar cane, fairly-traded and organically-sourced from sugar cane farmers in Ecuador who have been cultivating organic cane sugar at the foot of the Andes, for generations. It's a charming scent that will work for women of all ages. If you love it, you can add to your collection with a Body Wash $15.00, Body Lotion $16.50 and boxed Gift Sets $16.50. The Body Shop is also featuring a limited-edition perfume in its White Musk collection: White Musk Midnight Iris $17.00 Eau de Toilette. Like their Love Etc... Eau de Parfum. this scent isn't quite what you might think is, just from hearing the notes: bergamot and water lily, a heart of lily of the valley, clary sage, and Orris (the root of the iris flower--a note I adore), plus bottom notes of musk, sandalwood and tonka bean. The scent is floral in category, and it's inexpensive, but doesn't feel "drugstore.' it's the warm, creamy notes of the drydown that temper it with a hint of woods and spice and make it feel rich. And the opaque purple bottle with black cap and gold accents has recycled materials in it. The scent is light enough to wear in warmer weather, but special enough to wear when it's date night. In fact, the scent is sensual and easy to wear. If you love it, there's also a Sheer Body Mist $15.00, a Shimmer Body Lotion $16.00, and a Silk Shower Gel $15.00.
FALL FASHION ACCESSORIES: A small addition to your outfit can make a dramatic change for the new. This season, statement jewelry and accessories help make that LBD, or even a workday blazer, shine. You don't have to spend a fortune to get great fashion accessories. Continue reading, and you'll see what we mean!
One of the easiest ways to make a fashion statement, and "trendy" without spending a fortune, is with a new hair style. And an even easier way is to accessorize your existing hairstyle with "hair blind." Scünci has tons of affordable options. For example, their Satin Elastic Head wrap. These are super-slim bands of hair band-sized, stretchy elastic (*with Scünci's excellent, No-Slip-Grip rubberized bottoms to keep them in place). These grip your style, like iron, but they are comfortable and conform to any size head. The satin yarn won't dent or damage your hair, either. Wear one for a subtle band that keeps hair in place, or up to all six. However, if you space them out on your hair, you'll be re-creating a trend I saw more than once on the runways for Fall 2009. If you like to wear your hair up in a twist or ponytail, adding several bands of contrasting Head wraps makes it modern. These slim head wraps come in a range of colors: indigo, merlot, moss, sandstone, espresso, and basic black. The runway versions used just one color and many slim wraps, but I like the idea of mixing them up to match my outfits. TIP: Scünci can offer you an entire wardrobe of hair affordable items for various activities, that are trendy and easy to use, all under the Conair umbrella: Conair Sport, Scünci .Chic, and Elle Belle (via a licensing agreement with Elle, for a higher price point collection). Most of these can be found in your local drugstores and mass market retailers. You owe it to yourself to try at least a few!
During the great depression, when customers required socks that would wear better and last longer than ever before, Great American Knitting Mills introduced a sock with a gold reinforcing yarn sewn in the toe. This "durable "sock with the gold toe" is the GOLDTOE hosiery men have relied on ever since then. In 1983, GOLDTOE Moretz also introduced a women's line, followed by a boys line in 1986 and a women's tights line in 1992. With Gold Toe, Changing seasons is as easy as changing your socks! For example, The Aqua FX (ADC-All Day Comfort) Jersey Sock $18.00/ 3 pair in "Cabernet" (a rich, deep wine) is a perfect Fall fashion compliment. The socks a comfy, breathable, 65% pima cotton an, 32% aquraoad nylon, and 3% spandex. They're thin and silky, but substantial enough to handle daily wear and tear. They also have the iconic, reinforced, "gold toe." it's not just there for decoration. It really makes it tougher to push a hole through! For those who like knee highs and natural blends, the Eco-FIX Knee High $21.00/3 pair is a best bet. This silky, stretchy, over-the-knee sock (get the multi-stripe in deep rose, light pink, grey, black and plum) is not only super-trendy, but it's 33% rayon from bamboo, 32% aquaroad nylon, 325 cotton, and 3% spandex. The wide top is nicely ribbed and stays put. comfortably, without cutting off your circulation. For lounging Aqua FX Ultra Soft Polyester Shaker Stitched Sweater Sock $21.00/3 pairs is a perfect partner. These super-soft, chunky, ribbed socks look hand-knit, and come in cheerful colors light an emerald, Bright Green. They also have built-in moisture control so your feet stay dry and comfy whether you're walking, or sitting, or lounging. Socks are a little luxury and of course, a necessity, too. These are great choices that will have you walking smart, trendy and comfortable, all Fall and Winter.
FASHIONABLE FALL NAILS: Nails aren't just for opening soda cans! Color them with great, new, trendy colors, and make them a fashion accessory. Here are some for Fall that we really love! For Fall 2009, Shades by Barielle and celebrity manicurist Elle, actually asked a blogger to help them create some new, hip color. It must have been a very exciting opportunity and the dozen colors in this collection are beautiful and trendy- Good job! What's really great about this Shades By Barielle Nail Polish $8.00/each collection is the variety of colors and formulas --something for everyone, with opaque colors that have impact on your nails. For example, you can unleash your inner rock star with "Falling Star," a medium blue with hefty glitter or "Blackened Bleu," a slightly more see-through, blackened navy polish with sapphire sparkle . If you don't like glitter but do like shimmer/metallic, my picks are "Lava Rock, " a trendy blackened plum and my favorite color: "Polished Princess," a shimmery, cucumber green with copper shimmer that will have you humming: "hey little Cobra" because it looks like it's the perfect, sports car or surfboard color. But if you're seeking something a bit more subdued, there are heathery creams like Get Mauve-ing," a soft violet/mauve, or my favorite, "U-Concrete me," a medium, cream gray. I didn't try all the colors, but there's also: "Glammed Out Garnet," a ruby-on-ruby sparkle; "Pin Up," a tomato red shimmer; "Out-Grey-Geous," a silver shimmer; "Slate of Affairs," a worn denim; "Putt-E-On-Me," a classic clay, "Make it a Latte, " a chocolate cream with golden highlights. No matter which colors you choose, you'll have some of the chic-est nails in town.
If there's anything better than a great, new, nail polish in a trendy shade, it's one with a girly bonus, like Orly's Once Upon a Time collection. The colors are all creme, except for "Pixie Dust" and they're right-from-the-runway colors. Each bottle of Orly Nail Lacquer $7.50 comes a little, matching, jeweled charm dangling from a lobster-claw clasp. Attach it to your cell phone, or add to a charm bracelet or necklace, or whatever use you dream up. "Poison Apple," is a rich, rusted red that anyone can wear, because it's a neutral tone. It's softer than a bold red and more wearable. The polish comes with an enameled apple charm. Also trendy is "Prince Charming," a deep taupe creme that's a mix of grey, brown, and taupe *I didn't get a charm on this one...I'm betting it's a crown, but please let me know for sure, if you have this one. "Enchanted Forest" is a deep forest green creme, but it's not "blackened." A jeweled butterfly charm comes with this one. "Mirror Mirror " is a dove gray creme that is light, but not summery. It comes with a little, silvery mirror charm (how cute!). The one semi-sheer color is "Pixie Dust" that arrives with a jeweled fairy charm and a load of silver sparkle in the sheer, grayed-blue polish. It's a pretty party look and quite ladylike. I saved the best for last: one of the most gorgeous berry polishes I've ever seen is "Happily Ever After," with a cute "ruby" slipper charm. It's a true berry, creamy except for some subtle, hot pink shimmer. It's a perfect, shimmery berry that makes you sigh with delight! Orly Nail Lacquers are free of DBP and all traces of Toluene and Formaldehyde, and you'll like the rubberized, no-slip-grip caps, too.
For a great party look that take literally, seconds to apply, try N.Y.C. New York Color's Nail Deco $1.99 . This is a package of six tiny, nail jewels" in four different designs: green star, red heart, blue circle, and diamond teardrop." Simply stick one, two or more on your fingernails or toenails, seal with a clear top coat, and you've got a sparkling touch. They're not so large that they feel uncomfortable or look awkward. I like to think of them as "bindis" for your nails!
ABOUT THE
ADVICE SISTERS "What Works" Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion Reviews: The Advice Sisters
web site and blog offer impartial,
up-close-and-personal product reviews, conducted by expert beauty &
fashion reviewer, Alison Blackman Dunham. If other opinions are
included in a review, "we" (instead of "I") is used.
My Review Philosophy: This beauty, fashion and cosmetics review column is called "What Works" (not what doesn't). I want to direct you to what I think are great products, not denigrate those I didn't like (but you might love). All beauty reviews are subjective. It's my responsibility to describe products in a way that offers information, but allows you to use your own, good judgment about whether to buy it or not. I have tested thousands of products and that gives me a strong background on which to base my comments, but in the end, the decision to try something is yours, alone. A Signature Approach Many online publications and blogs find it easier and more economical to just post photos and press releases of products "as if" they have actually used them, or get paid for "advertorials" (reviews written in exchange for money). I only allow genuine reviews. That is, I (or a qualified reviewer) actually try the products reviewed. This approach takes much more time and effort, but it is what distinguishes The Advice Sisters from a lot of others. I know you appreciate the difference. A Note About Compensation: I will never formulate my reviews using just high resolution photos and press releases, without experiencing the product I am reviewing. These type of "faux" reviews simple add to the junk and clutter on the Internet, without offering anything substantive or new. In order to write real reviews of real products, I am using samples provided by a company or a public relations firm. There is no way I could write valid, responsible, up-close-and-personal reviews without them. In consideration of The Federal Trade Commission's latest initiative to monitor the validity of blogger reviews, please note that I do not accept "advertorial" (paid content) and any paid advertisements are marked as such. Sample products are not valid "compensation" for the tremendous amount of effort it takes to write genuine reviews, nor do samples influence my experienced opinion of products in any way.
