The Advice Sisters Daily Blog-Take a Look!

Whether you've been counting pennies all year, the holiday season probably means you'll be making some purchases. This special Advice Sisters "What Works" Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion Review Holiday 2009 column has especially re-designed to help you find the best beauty, fragrance, and lifestyle items on the market.  Find the things you want to give, to get, or to help make the rest of the year more beautiful and fun.

I  have done something new with this column. It is split into four distinct pages:  This page (Page One)  features holiday gift ideas.  PAGE TWO features fragrances for body and home.  PAGE THREE has beauty helpers and glamorous makeup to enhance your holiday looks and be more "merry & bright," including glam touches for hair, face, and nails. PAGE FOUR is our extensive, Buyer's Guide, with information and shopping links to let you shop online, for every single item featured on this column.  You can navigate back and forth between the pages by using the links on the bottom, right hand column, of each page.

A Number of the reviews have links to a larger review (many with photos and videos) on the Advice Sisters BLOG.  Click those links to get all the details on products and services that need more explanation than I can provide in this What Works column format. The Advice Sisters blog daily about products, services, and ideas that can help make like easier, more successful, more satisfying and more fun. You can also leave comments on the blog, and subscribe to it by email or in a feed reader.

I hope in some small way, that my Advice  Sisters Online Publications have helped you.  I'd love hearing your thoughts.

*in light of the Federal Trade Commission's initiative to deter blogger fraud, I have added an "About Compensation"  disclosure to my regular,  "About the Advice Sisters" box (it is lime green so you can't miss it). It's always  posted on this column on every single page. Please take a moment to read it. Thank you for your support throughout the year and I look forward to 2010!

Happy Holidays to You!

STOCKING STUFFERS Under $25.00

No matter what the season a great lip balm is a must-have for every member of the family. SoftLips Lip Conditioning Balms $2.79/each $3.99/2 pack by SoftLips is slim enough to fit into a tiny handbag or tight jeans. But it's the silky, nurturing balm with SPF 20! and novel, limited edition, seasonal scents, that make them coveted stocking stuffers and Winter lipcare must-haves: SugarPlum Berry with Cherry:  Sugar & Spice and Vanilla; SoftLips Winter Mint with Vanilla, Sugar Cooke with Cherry.  There are plenty of other year-round faves, too The flavors are subtle and not too "sugary."  The guys will even love them because they're fun to use, moistly-matte, and the scents acceptable for adults.  The cardboard backing has silvery snowflakes to make them even more gift-able. They're truly addictive!  Even if the sun isn't shining, your lips are always exposed to the sun's rays, and to wind and other "drying" factors and a lip balm helps soothe, protect, and heal. SoftLips taste so good and feel so great, you'll want to use them often. These little lip balms may be inexpensive, but they're top notch!

I haven't often given too much thought to plastic that goes into hair accessories, but I really should!  A great, "green" stocking stuffer for this holiday season (or anytime) is the Eco Collection by Scünci srp. $2.99.  This is a useful  collection of hair barrettes, and jaw clips in large and mini sizes, is created from 100% recycled plastic. The clips come in classic black and tortoise. You can't tell that the plastic is recycled, and they're sturdy and trendy. You can't ever have too many hair accessories. Give a gift every woman wants, and make it even better by giving "green."

Softsoap’s latest bath goody is their Nutri Serums Body Nourishing wash srp. $3.50- $4.50.The clear gel looks pretty in the dolphin-nosed, clear plastic flip top bottles, but what really makes these body washes stand out are the little beads of serum that are activated as you rub them onto your body. The product cleanses nicely, with good, moisturizing foam. These feel like expensive spa products, but they cost less than a large latte! This  Body Wash is available in two types: Restoring with Vitamin E, and Moisture Retaining with Omegas 3 & 6. Both have very light and pleasant scents that the entire family will feel comfortable with. Pop one of these under the tree (with a huge bow) -- they little, colorful serum beads look festive enough as-is, suspended like sprinkles or confetti in the clear body wash.

Fresh Minerals  is a line of cosmetics made with fine ground, or micronized minerals & inorganic pigments that exist in nature and that are treated or coated with other pigments to create different colors and effects. All their foundations and bronzer products offer an SPF20. The loose powder minerals are also water resistant, so they won’t come off with perspiration. Give someone a gift of the sun even if they're nowhere near it this Winter, with Fresh Minerals' Blazin' Bronze Kit $20.00.  It makes an impressive gift that is really affordable.   Packaged in an attractive, hard-sided cardboard presentation box with clear window and snap closure, are three items to make you look sun-kissed:  Loose Mineral Bronzing Powder (in "Bahama" and there is a lighter version, too);  Loose Mineral Luminizing Powder (pink and very sparkly--dab it on lids and lips as well as on cheekbones); and a nice, lightweight, retractable Brush housed in a chic, matte black case.  Also impressive, and a great way to introduce someone to loose mineral makeup, is The KickStart Mini Starter Kit $20.00.  Packaged in an attractive, hard-sided cardboard presentation box with clear window and snap closure are the essentials to a perfect complexions. You get a Duo Loose Mineral Foundation--there are five different duos The foundation is 100% pure, all natural, talc free, oil free, fragrance free, and non-comedogenic.  You also get a mineral based, vitamin enhanced, Smoothing Prep Primer (a gel in a tube) that helps makeup look smoother and last longer. If your skin is dry or rough, a primer really helps!  The kit also comes with a small Kabuki Brush -- a must-have for anyone who likes loose mineral makeup. Either kit will delight without making a huge dent in your wallet!

It has been a while since The Advice Sisters reviewed anything from Bourjois, but this makeup brand has been alive and well since 1863. Their baked eye shadows have been favorites of mine, for years. The powder eye shadows are silky, the color, intense, and the little, round compacts with interior mirror and cute, mini sponge-tipped applicators, the stuff makeup lovers dreams are made of. As a stocking stuffer of a little gift for yourself, you can't help but love the newest eye shadow collection called “Rendez-vous a Paris." Bourjois enlisted the creativity of French artist and illustrator Nathalie Lete, to festoon the cover of four special edition eye shadow pots with beautiful illustrations that celebrate specific places in Paris. Included among the eight new colors are:  Noir Precieux, a purple-black shimmer with a view of the Seine, Beige Rose a nude highlighter with a view of Paris, central in a fanciful “map”, Argent, a blue/grey iridescent with the Opera Garnier on the lid, and the one I tried: Violet Absolu, featuring the Place Vendome and a deep, iridescent purple that’s trendy, wearable as both as a lid color and liner. All of these work well with all complexions and eye colors, and., of course, they’re long lasting and stay true to color -- lovely to look at, great to use, wonderful to wear.

L’Oreal HIP Matte Shadow Duos $8.00/each are trendy and make fun fashion statements, as well as stocking stuffers.  Each round pot of color comes with a light and dark color to make eye matte but not dull. Try a color you might not have considered and enjoy a new look, for less . Perky," for example, pair a bright, grass green with a deep blackened green for liner or accent. "Animated," pairs stark white with a clear, deep blue. And I love "Poppy," a bold peach that looks warm and earthy, paired with a deep cocoa brown that can be used as a liner, or as part of a more modern, smoky eye look. Be a "big spender" and add a HIP High Intensity Pigments Chrome Eyeliner $10.00 in an intense, metallic, black, silver, gold or violet. You can't help but have fun with these!

I had a friend who recently confided that she wasn’t drinking red wine anymore, because it stained her newly-whitened teeth. But now there's something to help remove the stains that tannins from red wine can leave behind on your teeth: Boraccha Wine Wipes $6.95 /20 wipes or 3 packs for $18.00. They arrive in a lightweight, round, plastic container slim enough to pop into a pocket or makeup bag. Inside the mirrored compact are disposable, cloth wipes that you just run over your teeth after drinking your glass (or glasses) of delicious red wine. The little round wipes don’t smell wonderful, and they taste a bit salty, but they do the job. They have baking soda (neutralizes acids that can corrode enamel and make stain molecules, turn clear); Salt (a natural cleanser and antiseptic that helps remove stains and alkalinize the mouth to fight germs), Hydrogen Peroxide (has a mild bleaching action and kills bacteria and viruses in your mouth); Calcium (helps keep teeth healthy); Glycerin (to protect from additional staining), and orange blossom (an antibacterial palate cleanser and antiseptic also known to aid in digestion). We tried it, and liked the results, although we didn’t love the taste. But Wine Wipes are an easy way to make red wine, teeth friendly. It will make a clever stocking stuffer for anyone with bonded or whitened teeth, and for every wine lover, too.

Here's something that's truly affordable for yourself or for a little gift that also helps provide support for breast cancer research: Karen Neuburger Low Cut Sock - Pink Ribbon $7.00. This pure white sports sock is made of fine-gage micro velour and it feel super-soft and silky. The elasticized top is covered and soft so it won't dig or bind. There's also a tiny, pink ribbon at the top of each sock, to remind everyone who sees it that breast cancer isn't beaten...yet. It's a useful and thoughtful gift for survivors and supporters. KN Karen Neuburger® new to our columns, is known for comfort-inspired fashion apparel and home merchandise. In 2009, KN will donate $75,000 to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which is dedicated to preventing breast cancer and finding a cure in our lifetime. That's another good reason to purchase these and other "pink" KN items.

Perlier makes elegant, luxe products with beautiful scents. Their Red Apple Bath and Body Cream Set $15.00 is beautifully packaged and fun to use, but it's amazingly affordable.  The presentation is great: a clear, plastic sleeve that has a photo of a juicy red apple on it, binding together two rectangular, plastic bottles with white flip top caps, also  minimally adorned with just a small, round graphic sticker (with apple graphic) on the bottom. They look modern, and pricey, but this Bath and Shower Gel 6.7 oz,  and Moisturizing Body Milk 6.7 oz., are just $7.50 each!  The explanation of the products on the plastic sleeve are in Italian...so European! The red-tinted cleanser is apple-based, and can be used as a moisturizing bubble bath as well as a shower gel. The body milk is soft and creamy, and moisturizes nicely without being greasy or heavy. Both have a lovely, light, apple scent.  The little but impressive set is perfect for gift-giving, or for a little treat for yourself.

Lisa Hoffman skin care is fabulous, especially the awesome, travel-friendly skincare ampules that make toting products easier these days.  The products themselves are superior, but it's the single-serve packaging option that will have you running to stock up for your next, out of town, sojourn. We have reviewed the Lisa Hoffman Night & Day Skin Care Packette, but there's also a spa-worthy Lisa Hoffman Spa Shower Care packette, and a Daily Bath Care Packette $9.95. Both sets are lightly and luxuriously fragranced with aromatherapy delicious scents, a true treat when you’re on the road or after a long at at the office. These packettes make an affordable but luxurious gift idea, and a little indulgence if you are planning vacation. Read my entire review in detail on the Advice Sister Blog!   And I know I'm still gushing, but my idea of a coveted stocking stuffer  is Lisa Hoffman's Lip Moisturizer $24.95. It comes in a pretty, pink, metallic pump tube. It slicks on your lips like silk, scented with a hint of vanilla, plus super hydrating, vitamins A, C and E, olive, avocado and sweet almond oil to make your lips feel sexy, smooth and soft. Perfect for anytime, but especially as the Winter heat makes lips prone to dryness, flaking, and cracking. A must have if you love dark lipstick (intense colors show every flaw).

Nothing can ruin your holiday cheer faster than a winter illness. Keep your hands clean, even when you can't get to a sink to wash them with soap and water, with a good hand sanitizer. One I like is the new, eco-friendly Frais Hand Sanitizer $3.50 0.2 fl. oz; $7.00 1.7 fl. oz, $29.00 15 fl. oz.  The product is 100% vegan, made of all natural ingredients. The light gel feels refreshing and cooling on your skin, and  "Les Huit," the company's mélange of eight natural Australian-blended essential oils, creates a scent is as complex as a fancy perfume: a delightful, spicy, blend of ginger, tangerine, lemon myrtle, niaouli, orange, basil, grapefruit and cardamom. This is a green company, that not only has recyclable packaging, but it's sugarcane alcohol requires five to ten times less energy to produce than the corn alcohol used in other hand sanitizer brands. The company headquarters sources Green power such as wind and solar. Part of every purchase of the product to the Just A Drop Foundation, supporting water, sanitation and health projects around the world. Get the big bottle for yourself and your home. Gift the smaller-sized bottle (fits into any pocket or purse, and it looks so cute!)  into everyone's stocking. Better yet, tie a ribbon on a bottle for each of your work colleagues, and let the "Secret Santa" help keep them from spreading germs, too.

For those on a budget who want the high level, star-quality pampering, I suggest Rodial Glam Balm Wipes $19.00 25 wipes. These come in a re-sealable, soft-sided packette done in star-quality silver, so you feel glam, while you’re doing a boring chore of removing makeup and the day’s or evening’s dirt and grime. The paraben free formula is extra gentle to your skin, good for even those with super sensitive skin. It has natural bisabolol, Vitamin E, ProVitamin B5, and chamomile extracts, to protect and moisturize, while they get rid of makeup, sweat, and grime. I love the silver packaging and the gentle formula that feels special. For under $20.00 you can gift someone with the most luxe wipes around, and they’ll thank you for the next 25 days, at least!

Give stocking stuffers that are not only good for the entire family, but could save their skin. Shady Day Daily SPF 30 Wipes $14.00/pkg 15 come in a re-sealable, soft-sided packette that lets you take SPF protection everywhere. You can use them on face and body, and they will absorb quickly. The wipes have no artificial ingredients or synthetic fragrances, but they do have good for your skin Vitamins E, A, mango fruit extract, cactus flower extract and organic aloe vera to moisturize and protect.  The active ingredients are Octocrylene 10%, Octinoxate 7.5%, Oxybenzone 3%, Avobenzone 2% . Every member of the family should have their own, refreshing, SPF 30 wipes, and they're a must-have for parents of young children, who may be resistant to being slathered with greasy lotions. These broad spectrum wipes are efficient, effective, and so clean you will have absolutely no excuses for going unprotected ever again! TIP:  for maximum effectiveness and protection, apply the wipe 30 minutes before you go out into the sun.  Use another wipe and re-apply if you've been swimming, sweating, or towel-drying your skin.

This holiday season, delight all your young sisters, nieces, and young-at-heart friends with a unique stocking stuffer that will bring smiles of delight:  YoYo LipGloss Minis $2.99.  We originally reviewed the full-sized product our Winter 2009 What Works column, but the minis are maxi fun to use!  YoYo Lipgloss is a sheer gloss with lots of sparkle, and girly flavors like bubble gum, chocolate, green apple, and kiwi. The gloss is a paraben-free, shiny, sheer, silky, sparkle lip gloss (with just a touch of a lip-plumping tingle and color). It comes in a slant-tipped squeeze tube tethered by a clear plastic snap loop on a retractable housing. That has a clear, plastic clip, so you can clip to a purse or pocket,. or even your jeans.  The cord extends several feet so you and get your gloss, and go.  The cord will automatically retract when you let go. The idea will appeal most of young girls, but if you're the type that always seems to lose that lipgloss in your handbag, this gloss won't get away from you so easily!  You can change the glosses, and the styles of the retractable reels. Larger sizes are just $4.99.  The minis are on little cardboard backs, making them the best "Secret Santa" gift ever!

If you're looking for something  that celebrities already love, but at a price you can afford, try the eye-catching canisters  of loose tea from the Village Tea Company. Cameron Diaz, Khloe Kardashian, Fergie & Taylor Swift, among others, are already fans. Each tea is packed in 100% recycled and recyclable packaging, with 3 re-useable, cotton muslin bags for brewing the tea. Each package has a "just for fun" limerick, and of course, instructions on how to brew tea. I  liked the Sweet Grace Vanilla Rooibos Tea $12.95 3.88 oz. (makes 35-40 servings) with South African Rooibos (a non-caloric, naturally sweet caffeine free herb) full of antioxidants and it's caffeine free. Try it as an after-dinner drink, or as a relaxing treat anytime. I was also very impressed with the quality of the rich, aromatic Royal English Breakfast Black Tea $13.95 4.6oz (makes:40-45 servings). I've had plenty of EBT in my life, but this one is particularly black, rich, and fragrant, thanks to tea leaves from Sri Lanka,.  use the colorful, 100% recycled container after the tea is gone for holding makeup brushes, pens, or even jewelry! You can re-use the muslin tea bags, too!

During Fashion Week, I went to the CVS Pharmacy Reinventing Beauty Editor's Lounge, and got a chance to see a myriad of beauty products that make CVS a one-stop shopping experience for fashionistas. The pharmacy also offers a 100% money back guarantee on all things beauty, so if you don’t love what you purchased, you can bring it back for a full refund--for any reason. CVS is a good placed to go to get budget minded gifts and stocking stuffers, Aside from favorite brands like L’Oreal, Sally Hansen Garnier and Maybelline (just to name a few), they have skincare from Lierac, Burts Bees, and Kelemata, and  they also have their own brands such as Essence of Beauty (bath and body potions in several different scents--I loved the Essence of Beauty Hand Cream $5.99 3.4 oz in Jasmine Ginger); and  Lumene skincare (the Time Freeze with Anti-Aging Arctic Heather $21.99 will help to banish puffiness and dark circles -- just slide it under your eyes whenever you need a cooling pick me up–real bennies within a half an hour), and Mission Skincare, with a really great Ultra Hydrating Lip Protector $3.99 with SPF 20. The sliver slant tipped squeeze tube is great for guys, too. There are also tons beauity products and accessories, and things to get for the guys in your life. Stop by your nearest CVS or visit their web site

Stocking stuffers that are useful don't necessarily have to be boring. Take the Brow Beauty Bubble $20.00 by Tweezerman.  Inside a round,re-useable clear plastic compact is a mini-sized magnifying mirror (it holds fast to any smooth surface or another mirror, with three suction cups) in girly pink,  and a matching mini tweezer.  It's available in a pattern of pink with white stars, or white snowflakes. The entire set can fit into the palm of your hand, but it packs big brow benefits!  Tweezerman's high quality tweezers offer precise plucking ability and hand-filed tips that grab hair without pain. The entire kit is tote-able, but I keep the mini-tweezers in my makeup bag and the mirror, at home attached to my bathroom mirror. It's a really lovely gift for anyone who wants to tweeze, with ease!

Gifts $25 and up:

Netbooks are the latest computer craze -- small, easy to use, and economical. Yes, Netbooks are nifty, but you still have to protect them as you would any computer. I have a full carry case for my Netbook, but sometimes I want something lighter and sleeker with just enough padding to keep it safe from jolts and scratches. Targus makes a number of high quality cases for computers of all kinds, but their 12" Slipcase with Accessory Pocket weighs just .55 lbs, with a 11.7" x 1.5" x 8.3" interior laptop compartment. It will fit any Netbook computer up to a 12" screen. It is super-slim, but has just enough padding to keep it safe in a car, or a desk, or in a tote bag. The black, neoprene zippered slipcase  is accented by a rugged, yellow zipper on the outer storage pouch, perfect for a mouse, portable hard drive, cable, USB sticks, or other items.  If you know someone who has just gotten a Netbook, the unisex design makes it a perfect gift for him or her. And, the company offers a lifetime limited warranty. For a high-ticket gift, get them the Netbook and the Targus Slipcase (or another case that Targus offers for Netbooks).  That's a truly impressive gift

These days, things that are inexpensive, easy and fun make life more bearable. While finding the time for fitness may be challenging, I've round a company called "FitnessUwear" that could actually help you get your fitness goals on track, without trying too hard: Banglz ($24.95-$27.95).  These are  wrist and leg weights with velcro closures, covered in cute patterns and colors. You simply wear them, and get some resistance action going, just by going about your busy day.  Read the entire review on the Advice Sisters Blog.

Handbag holders don't just hold your bag off the floor (away from dirt), but they also help keep it safe where you can see it,  Superstition says that if you put your handbag on the floor, you might become poor, but it's more likely that if you leave it on the floor, someone might snatch it and take your credit cards,  iPhone, etc. Spring Street's Handbag Holders $30.00 not only make useful gifts, but they're a must-have these days. Handbag holders are metal hooks with a decorative top (on a soft,  felted bottom) that rests on the table, while the bottom part holds your handbag in the air, under the table. Once you've used one, you'll wonder how you ever did without it! And there are practical reasons to use a handbag holder, too.  Keeping your bag suspended in the air also keeps germs away.  They're fun to use, and a sure-fire conversation starter.  My favorite design is the 'Royalty Charms' Handbag Hanger, featuring glittering clear and aurora borealis rhinestones on a silvery crown.  I also like the girly, Martini Cocktail holder, featuring a silver martini glass encrusted with pink and AB rhinestones, on a hot pink enamel background, a lasting flower, with the teal enamel flower with light blue and AB rhinestone center. Nearly every woman uses a handbag on a daily basis. These days, handbags can be big investments-- you've got to take care of them! A handbag holder is perfect for every princess on your gift list and they're also a one-size-fits-all gift.

In 2005, The Advice Sisters reviewed a really cute face-in-a-case set, by Pixi. A lilac-colored slimline compact no bigger than a credit card that held everything you might want for an evening out. The London-based Pixi has affordable products, now available at Target Stores, as well as the company web site. One new product, created by Swedish makeup artist Petra Strand and her two sisters, is the Eye Beauty Kit $28.00.  A lime green, credit-card-sized compact holds a whopping eight different eye shadow, plus a dual ended applicator with shadow and liner bristles. The colors compliment, contrast and countour in nearly endless combos, with layerable formulas that let you wear a sheer wash or color, or (when used wet) an intense lid color or liner. All wear well and stay true to color. All are shimmery, although some are a bit more so with little bits of glitter.  The shadows have good-for-your-skin Vitamin E, aloe vera, pearl extract (for luminousity), natural mica pigment, and dimethicone to make application, smooth.  Three different sized pigments are in these little rectangles of fun, for maximum light reflection. You can get them in thirteen different color sets!  I tried "Muse,"  with four light and four dark colors:  opal green gold, olive gold, emerald green, deep olive liner, gold with glitter, mermaid green, moss green gold, bronze gold.  You'll feel like a star using these--they're just that much fun.  Get one for a  makeup lover, or turn someone into a makeup fun with these kits. More importantly, they are good quality makeup that will give you lots of looks, for a reasonable price.

Jewelry is always a welcome gift, but Kameleon Interchangeable Jewelry makes one gift into many!  The pendants, rings and bracelets are in sterling silver, and they have interchangeable "jewels" in precious stones, crystals, and cubic zirconia. You can collect different  "jewel pops" and literally change the entire look of your jewelry in just seconds.  The jewels literally pop in and out of the setting so you can switch between a couple of hundred jewel pops.  Pop one out with just the pressure of your finger or the specially designed jewelcap, and gently push another jewelpop in. They hold securely with a rubber stopper.  The initial frames range in cost, depending upon the one you choose. I tried and open, round pendant that looked modern and tasteful.  It's just $35.00.  The glittery, pink sparkle crystal jewel pop I tried is just $25.00, and an opal-esque jewel pop called "Daydreams" is just $30.00.  These are unique, clever, and fun. They make a great gift, and you can continue to add jewel pops to your Kameleon Jewelry wardrobe as you go along.  You can also use the jewel pops in other Kameleon pieces. For example, you can use the same jewel pop you might have used in a pendant today, in a Kameleon ring, tonight!  All the company's packaging materials are made to be 100% recyclable and instead of the traditional jewelry box, pieces come in origami-style puff pouches with eye-catching purple and green designs. All you need is a small gift card and you're good to go!

Don’t let holiday revelry hurt your feet! Get, and give,  the Foot Petals Luxury Kit $39.95. The round, zippered, plastic, carry case is striped like a carousel with black lines, and inside you’ll find everything essential to have healthy, happy, comfortable feet, even if you’re standing or dancing all night in  stilettos. You get a 3.8 oz. Bottle of vanilla-scented, Sweaty Pedi, which keeps your feet feeling fresh by absorbing perspiration and protects against blisters. A package of 3 pairs of Tip Toes, cushions that help keep your feet from sliding forward in strappy sandals and pumps, They’re made from PORON performance urethanes, that help to prevent calluses from forming, and protect bones and tissue in the sensitive ball of foot area. You also get a set of Heavenly Heels and Strappy Strips, the former helps keep heels from slipping in and out of shoes (you can also use them in the front of backless mules to keep them on your feet), and to avoid blisters. The  8 Strappy Strips are thin bands with sticky backs that you can put on the strap of sling backs, or anywhere on a shoe where you need a little extra padding. This bag of comfort is ready for gift giving but you’ll need one too, unless you’re wearing nothing but sneakers!

There's nothing more unique and fun than wearable art --especially in the form of great T-shirts. Skrapper’s first venture brings artist William Quigley’s paintings and work into the world of fashion with a collection of luxury T-shirts designed by his partner, designer/photographer Katie Theofilos. The Tee-shirt line, Skrapper, was hatched in 1999, when William was asked to paint a boxer for his close friend. The result was a series from 1999-2009 where Quigley painted over 40 boxers, learning the history of the sport through each painting. In his eyes, the intellectual, physical, financial and emotional challenges between boxing and painting created the Skrapper credo. In 2008, his neighbor, photographer and designer Katie Theofilos, interpreted 20 years of his struggles, loves, passions, and images into a brand. Skrapper T-shirts are a collective reinvention of Quigley’s artwork, featuring luxe fabrics and styles that you'll want to show off as walk-able, wearable, works of art.  To see more, visit the Advice Sisters Blog

Love Jewelry? A great shop online find is jewelrypayless.com. This company sells jewelry online lls jewelry online that is high quality, but amazingly low in price. The pieces are inspired by some most expensive styles on the market, but in real gold with genuine stones, they'd be unaffordable for most people. Jewelrypayless takes these designs and makes them accessible. None of the items I reviewed were over $70.00, most were a lot less.  For examples, these Tiffany Inspired Etolie CZ Silver Earrings are sterling silver with sparkling cubic zirconia stones for $29.99 The real deal in 18K gold with diamonds is over $1,700. For the trendy girls, there's a 14K Gold Plated Silver Tiffany Inspired Ladies Sevillana Ring $32.99, designed with the "O" circle made with black precious onyx gemstones in a pave setting that looks very similar to Elsa Peretti's Sevillana ring for Tiffany, but actually, this one is a lot more interesting. The substantial band is 14K yellow gold plated over solid sterling silver. The color combination of this ring gives this ring a modern look. When you move your hand, the stones, twinkle. People will think you spent a fortune for it! There are ideas for men, too, such as a  Black Rubber Cord Necklace w/ Stainless Steel Clasp $14.99 3mm Black rubber cord necklace with solid spring clasp in 316L stainless steel. This rubber and steel necklace will never tarnish. Available in three lengths: 16", 18", and 20". The black leather color and the contemporary steel spring clasp is a perfect fit for you pendants, too. See more and read more on the Advice Sisters Blog.

Good things do come in shiny, silver packages, especially if they're from Rodial, a company that delivers targeted treatments to specific skin concerns, with anti-ageing and firming ingredients. For example I find it very hard to resist the allure of Glamtox SPF 18 $125.00 1.7. fl. oz. I love the movie star quality of the packaging. It comes in a shiny silver box with cool white lettering, and, inside, there’s a slender, shiny silver pump bottle that looks so glam, you might not realize that inside is a super-powerful anti-aging lotion. The light cream has a powerful cocktail of active ingredients, including micro-injected Hyaluronic acid (to plump up skin), Myrrh extract (also to plump up skin and give it a glow), collagen peptides (help to relax expression lines and repair underlying connective tissue. All Rodial products have a star ingredient: pomegranate ellagic tannins, working to boost collagen and provide high quality antioxidant protection. While the cream has been heralded by some as an alternative to Botox, I can say that it will help to tighten up your skin. Thanks to muscle freezing, wrinkle filling, properties, you might just start to see a better looking you in the mirror pretty soon. You can feel the product immediately tighten your skin (not unpleasantly so, but the firming action is definitely there)..and you will be protected with SPF 18-good enough for daily wear. If you want to treat yourself (or someone special ) to a great moisturizer that helps you to look younger and feel better, you can't do better than Glamtox.

Full figured doesn't mean fat. You can be huge on top, and slim at the wait (think:Pamela Anderson). Maidenform  makes bras for every woman, but they have some for bigger-breasted women that look good, feel good, and fit fantastically well! ....and while we're talking about um..."big"...even "Pamela" can use a little help to look sleeker under clothes. Flexees makes some body shapers for women of all sizes (many are designed so you can wear your own bra with them). These work well, but won't pinch your body or your budget too much!  Give yourself a gift this season and get intimates that look good and feel good, too.  *this is a very comprehensive review with photos, please read it on the Advice Sisters Blog.

Not every skincare item is gift-able, but luxurious products that constitute a splurge, certainly are.  For example, Erno Lazlo’s TranspHuse Night Serum $190/00 1 oz. may be one of the most luxurious ways to combat the signs of aging, while you sleep. Even the packaging is luxe and dramatic: A shiny black carton with white lettering looks clean and unisex.  Inside. the pump bottle with shiny black cap has a clear outside wall and inside, a shiny black core.  The serum inside, however, is clear. It contains a high concentration of glycosaminoglycans and the polypeptide MATRIXYL 3000 to stimulate collagen production and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Meanwhile, gatuline expression inhibits the formation of new wrinkles caused by stress-induced facial micro-contractions that happen while you sleep. There's a light, lavender scent to relax you. Apply it to clean skin and then follow up with a favorite moisturizer. This reparative and firming treatment won’t take the place of a face lift, but it could help delay/reduce the signs of aging without resorting to more drastic and expensive, means. If you are close to someone person who is really worried about looking older, this makes a thoughtful and impressive gift. It also helps to know that Erno Lazlo's clientele was a list of society belles and celebrities including:  the Duchess of Windsor, Gloria Vanderbilt, Doris Duke, Greta Garbo (below left), Lillian Gish, Paulette Goddard, Audrey Hepburn, Jacqueline Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe.

GIFTS JUST FOR GUYS:

Ecko by Marc Eko Eau de Toilette $65.00 3.4 fl. Oz, $49.00 1.7 fl. Oz is a stunning fragrance from the outer packaging, to the bottle, to the scent. The designer, Marc Eko, says this new fragrance is like a wake-up call a reminder that you are alive."  Indeed, the immediate, energizing smell of grapefruit is evident, and makes you feel happy.  But, upon drydown, Ecko by Marc Eko becomes an intoxicating blend of musk, masterfully mixed with florals and citrus. The scent is masculine, but more young and "metro" than macho. The top notes of chilled ginger and white grapefruit, are mixed with a hint of white incense and energized musk, plus cool green violet leaves. Clear Harmony Noise Canceling Headphones [NC1000CH] $299.99 with LINX AUDIO™ are definitely not just for men, but so many guys feel the need for their own "space," and peace and quiet, I'm putting this gift suggestion is the "GUYS" Section.  However, since I got these headphones, I hardly want to take them off (and I'm definitely not a guy)!  Clear Harmony's headphone technology was originally developed for a new generation of top-of-the-line hearing aids, called Linx Audio. It alters the audio signal to make it easier to hear frequency words or notes and increases the perception of volume, without actually having to increase it. Linx Audio reduces distortion, filters out undesirable sound, while providing the ability to hear full, rich base notes and clear, high notes .The headphones are nicely made, with a 5' audio cord featuring a sliding volume control/mute button, so you don't need to remove the headphones to really hear outside sounds. The ear pads adjust well to fit even smaller or larger head, very comfortably. They fold up into a hard-sided, clam shell type zippered case with interior mesh pocket to keep extra batteries (along with the 1/8” and 1/4” Stereo Adapters and the audio cord). These headphones are amazing, and make a very impressive gift. Read the entire review with all the technical details, on the Advice Sisters Blog.

Shaving items are a classic man's gift for the holidays, but Jack Black's men's grooming products are super-luxe and make an impressive offering. For example, our male reviewers love the  Jack Black Beard Lube Conditioning Shave Cream $15.95 6 fl. oz.  The luxe cream comes in a deep blue tube with black flip-top lid. It's a multi-tasking shave product:  a  pre-shave oil, shave cream and facial skin treatment all in one.  It does a lot of good things for his skin, but he doesn't have to deal with anything new or difficult to get the benefits. The formula's key ingredients include macadamia nut oil, jojoba oil and glycerin, to provide a lubricating, protective cushion against his razor. Phospholipids help bind moisture to the skin and support the natural skin barrier.  The formula also penetrates, pre-shave, to soften whisker growth, and hold moisture in, so his razor glides easily. It also refreshes (with peppermint, eucalyptus and menthol) for an a smoother shave with less razor burn. This clever cream has a unique, see-through texture so he doesn't have to blindly cut through tons of soapy foam-- that's especially good if he wants to shave his side burns, moustache or head. All he needs is a quarter-sized amount--and it won't clog his blade either. The product is fragrance-free, colorant-free, dermatologist tested, and vegan. Pretty amazing...and a great gift!

Another luxurious shaving product that men will love...a lot...is the Hydra Therapy Shave Cream $25.00 3.5 oz. by Erno Laszlo. It arrives in Erno Laszlo's signature white tube with black flip top. It looks sophisticated and also, unisex. Inside, there's a treat for his face: a deluxe formula that is enriched with glycerin, essential oils, plus vitamins C and E. The rich cream has a very light, clean scent. It moisturizes, softens and protects skin, and our reviewers were very happy about the close shave they got, and the way their skin felt soft and smooth (without irritation, cuts, or knicks). This shave cream is good for all skin types so you can gift it without fear that you've gotten the wrong thing. Want to really impress a special man this holiday season?  Buy him a new razor and a tube of this wonderful shave cream.  It will make an impressive and useful gift, and his skin will look and feel better than he ever thought possible. A little pampering goes a long way towards making a man thinking more seriously about the benefits of good skin care, too.  Once he sees how much better his skin is, he will be hooked. Erno Laszlo (the company makes lots of other great products just for men, as well.

Do you want your special guy to have amazingly soft and kissable lips?  You know he won't go all out and get what's needed, but you can give him a great, luxe, gift of Elizabeth Grant's Caviar Line Treatment for Lips and/or  Soleil Smart Lip Protection SPF 15.  These products are not just for men, but I think men will find the idea that you want to protect their lips, very romantic!  You know most men don't think of these important things, like protecting their skin, so they're a perfect gift for the guy. TRUST ME--these are unisex--benefitting  women as much as (or more)  as the guys!  Elizabeth Grant  products (photo)  all contain "Torricelumn™" a natural substance used to treat heal wounded skin. It is  extracted from the fronds and within the pods of kelp. The kelp pods keep the seawood floatingo on the ocean's surface, allowing them to absorb sunlight, photosynthesizing oxygen, the source of life and energy. The seawater absorbed by kelp is similar to human plasma, allowing users to get benefits from sea vitamins and minerals, too. The Caviar Line Treatment for Lips $35.00  .10 fl. oz comes in a shiny black and gold box. A black "click-it" pen with gold accents has a slant tip that dispenses a melon-scented cream. It softens the appearance vertical lines and wrinkles. Use it a couple of times a day,  but see a difference within 30 minutes of application!  Key ingredients are natural, regenerating Caviar, and Peptides blended with Torricelumn™. Soleil Smart Lip Protection SPF  $15.00 .33 fl. oz. arrives in a copper and gold box, in a slant-tipped copper tube with gold accents. The lip cream smells a bit fruity (but not girly) and moisturizes while it protects against the sun's damaging rays. Key ingredients are Torricelumn™ plus shea butter, chamomile, and aloe vera to soothe and heal. These are products he will want to use.  I can't think of an easier, more pleasant way to improve the look, feel and texture of lips--his--yours--anybody's!

You can never have enough lip balms, and the Lip Balm #! $8.50 by Kiehl’s Since 1851.  is a  unisex favorite.  But there's more than just the original,  with cotton seed oil and sun protection SPF 4, to make lips soft and moist. There's pear,  cranberry, and mint, and some new flavors including; coconut, mango and vanilla. All arrive in a simple, white tube with black lettering, and the clear gel formula leaves lips soft but not super-shiny. I have personally seen both men and women grabbing handfuls of these lip balms to use themselves, or, perhaps, pop into gift bags at holiday time. Everyone loves these, girls, guys, grandmas...everyone!

Peppermint is the ultimate pick me up. Now Redken has created a multi-tasking Mint Rush Hair & Body Wash $14.00 6.8 oz. Our reviewer loved the product, saying it was easy to use  and he didn't have to think about how to use it, and also, it felt good on his skin.  A great skincare product is a great way to get men of all ages to consider taking better care of their hair and skin. Mint Rush Hair & Body Wash comes in a cool, green tube with an all in one cap that twists open and closed in one movement, and  sits solidly on the the shower or tub.  The star ingredients are peppermint and menthol,  to energize skin and hair, and wake him up on those cold "I-don't-want-to-get-out-of-bed" mornings. Glycerin and Vitamin E moisturize the skin, while protein helps nourish both skin and hair.  The product has a balanced PH level to clean, but won't dry out his skin.  The guys loved the fresh scent and energizing, cooling feeling of the cleanser. Give him his own bath and body multi-tasker, and you're giving a guy a great way to enjoy better looking skin and hair without even trying!  You might find yourself sneaking a bit, too. Our reviewer wanted to know more about what else Redken made for men. Now that could be a holiday miracle in your home, too.

BATH & BODY GIFT IDEAS:

LUSH Cosmetics has the cutest, most deliciously scented products, and they're all natural with an expiration date, when it was made, and who made it, right on the item. Although 65% of the products they sell in LUSH stores are unpackaged, they also have some ready-to-give, wrapped gifts that delight, without depleting your wallet.  The Buttercup Gift Set $9.95, for example,  is sinfully scented with vanilla and honey. and good-for-your-skin ingredients that soothe and moisturize.  This cute set comes as you see it in the photo, in floral wrapping with hot pink raffia ribbon and a gift tag that tells you what's inside: a fabulous, Butterball bath bomb that makes your tub into an oasis, and a Honey I Washed the Kids soap with soothing aloe vera that works even with sensitive skin, and honey, bergamot and orange fragrance.  Who could resist?  I also like the vegan Blossom Gift Set $11.95. The box is covered in gift paper featuring blue, white and pink cherry blossoms (or maybe, snowflakes). Inside is a white, Sakura bath bomb scented with .Jasmine and mimosa. It smells like cherry blossoms!  You also get a  small, delicately scented, floral, Lily Savon soap. It's a palm-free soap base, made from a mix of Rapeseed, Sunflower and Coconut Oils, and  featuring notes of lily, gardenia, jasmin, ylang ylang and neroli.  These are wonderful, unique "thank-you" gifts to have on hand, and you don't even have to wrap them!  Keep a bunch for "just in case," and for holiday hostess gifts, too.

Upper Canada Soap & Candle Makers, new to our column, has been in business 40 years, producing 2,000 bath and body products, candles, soaps, and specialty gift ideas for women, men, and children. If you're looking for a little pick-me-up or thank-you gift, you can't go wrong with one of the products from their Naturally Collection conditioning line with botanical extracts, all-natural ingredients, oils, and mineral complexes specifically chosen for their known skin benefits.  Each of the 10 products in the Naturally Collection are also free of parabens, mineral oils, and synthetic dyes for skincare. There are five fragrance choices:  Wild Mint Lime;  Cranberry Moro Orange,  Press Olive Avocado,  Sweet Vanilla Fig, and  Warm Honey Nectar. We really liked the Hand & Body Lotion $12.00 12 fl. oz. in an attractive, brown "apothecary-style" plastic pump bottles.  Ours, in Cranberry Moro Orange, was tart and uplifting, and made our skin immediately feel hydrated with a smoothness that lasted for hours.  We also tried the Body Butter $12.00 6.4 fl. oz. in Press Olive Avocado in a brown plastic jar with paper overleaf depicting olives and avocados (yum!) and a thick, whipped cream that smelled lightly floral with a hint of citrus (not so girly the guys couldn't use it too).  All of the products in this collection are bargain-priced, with none over $15.00--but they look like they cost a lot more.

Looking for something to give to new parents that they can enjoy themselves, as well as use on the baby? California Baby’s Calendula Everyday Lotion $11.49 6.5 fl. I have always been a huge fan of Philip B.'s amazing skin, hair and bodycare.  But there's one in in particular that I covet:  The Chocolate Milk products.  I know these will  appeal to men and women, boys and girls, young and old. Once you see the beautifully boxed Chocolate Milk Gift Set $62.50 of Chocolate Milk Body Wash & Bubble Bath 11. 8 Fl. Oz.; and Chocolate Milk Body Creme 6 fl. Oz. you will clap your hands in glee like a little kid! The products are so sinfully delicious, it will take you back to school, and those little, waxy cartons of chocolate milk that we used to drink through slim, little straws. But the products are for adults, with serious, effective ingredients to nurture your skin, including: cocoa butter, oat protein, wheat amnino acids, and moisturizing aloe, and glycerin.  Read more about this gift set, and other Philip B gift ideas, on the Advice Sisters Blog.

Boots is one of my all time favorite bath, body, and skincare brands. Just about everything they offer makes even everyday beauty rituals feels special. Fort the holidays, they’ve packaged two large (8.4 fl. oz.) products in a large, square, pink, white and black gift box with Victorian style graphics to make it more classic. The Boots Original Formula Gift Set $24.95 provides authentic formulas from the Boots archives. Inside the box, in glass, apothecary style bottles with old-time black and white labels, are a lovely bath foam scented with Bergamot and Clary Sage, and a glass bottle with black plastic pump of an excellent Body Lotion, scented with Lavender and Rosemary. Both of these products are original beauty formulas from Boots, a company that was established in 1849! The bath foam smells uplifting and slightly spicy thanks not just to the bergamot and clary sage, but also spicy cardamom, orange, neroli, and rose. The gel turns into a pampering, aromatic foam that soaks away the cares of the day, without drying or stripping skin o moisture, The Body Lotion, in a plastic bottle with black pump top, has relaxing lavender and rosemary to refresh. It's lovely and efficient. The set is impressive, but it won’t set you back a bundle.  This is a great gift!

Buy the Charity Pot $20.45 9 oz. by LUSH, and help charities do good deeds while softening skin.  This very emollient hand and body cream comes in a black tub looks like a little flowerpot...cute for gift giving. But what really make the idea, blossom, is that every penny of the retail price (excluding taxes) goes directly into a charitable fund to support animal rights, environmental protection and humanitarian concerns.  Each pot informs the user who the pot, helps, right on the lid! The Charity Pot the Advice Sisters received, for example, will help support the Seneca Babcock Neighborhood Garden in Buffalo New York. Helping others another do great things for good causes will make you feel even better about spending, and giving,  this holiday season. If your skin is dry, the natural oils and fair trade cocoa in this product will moisturize and soothe away all traces of discomfort and dull skin, immediately. It does a world of good for your body too. The fragrance is festive and spicy: ylang ylang, geranium and marigold essential oils. The icing on the cake?  It's vegan, so you can gift it to everyone!

I have a friend who loves bath and body products, but everything irritates her sensitive skin. She's the perfect recipient of Glowology Simply Divine for Sensitive Skin $45.00, by Noodle & Boo. The gift set comes a girly, ink and white box with white floral graphics, and a cute, black "Bow" wrapped around the bottom of the box. Inside, there are two, 7 oz. must-have indulgences for sensitive skin (or any skin type): Heavenly Honey Wash, and Lovely Body Lotion. Heavenly Honey Wash smells soft and a little bit like honey, with nourishing milk protein, almond oil and clover honey, plus Organic calendula and white tea to soothe skin. The wash contains natural antioxidants vitamins A, C and E. The Body Lotion is the companion product, with the same fragrance and ingredients, to soothe and moisturize skin. Both come in plastic, flip top tubes with blue caps and girly pink floral graphics, and both are clinically-tested and hypoallergenic. The set makes a luxurious and welcome gift for girls who love pampering but whose skin, rebels against certain ingredients.

I love a two-for-one, especially at holiday time. Agoodnightkiss offers a great Tub Tea Gift Set $24.00 featuring a great tub tea, and a complimentary (and pretty) massage soap, all in one festive package. A special holiday blend has European sea salt, jasmine, grapefruit, sweet orange, sandalwood an bergamot all working to soothe and relax aching muscles. Each of the 5 large sachets of tub tea has herbs, extracts, antioxidants, vitamins and botanicals. The package is red and white, like a candy cane! After about 15 minutes soaking in the tub, you will feel ready to go out and dancer the night away, or at least get a good night's sleep. It's a perfect little gift for a work colleague, or as a little treat for yourself.

Vaseline is already known for good quality, effective, and affordable products, but now they've just launched one that's really amazing. Their latest product, Vaseline® Sheer Infusion™ with Stratys-3™ 6.8 oz. bottles $6.25, and a $8.99 13.5 oz. pump , is the only lotion that moisturizes across all layers of skin. It really gives you high-tech moisturization, at an amazingly reasonable cost! The key thing that's new in this product is that the lotion absorbs into all those layers of your skin, so none are neglected. The product works a bit like a trapeze, suspending the moisture on the top level as well as the other layers, so your skin is hydrated from the outside in, and the inside, out. *The Advice Sisters Blog has all the details on this new, cutting edge product, including a video.

One of the quintessential scents of the holiday season is gingerbread, spicy, warm, sweet, and comforting. Now Dionis has translated this wonderful scent into a line of limited edition bath and body goodies, that will quickly get you in the holiday spirit. These affordable products are high quality, housed in plastic containers and jars with bright red and white labels, featuring gingerbread people to add a cute touch. The Moisturizing Body Lotion $9.99 8 fl. Oz. (in a clear plastic pump bottle) features nourishing goat’s milk. The lotion leaves skin immediately feeling silky, and that scent!!!1 I also tried an apothecary-style, clear plastic jar (with metal snap closure) of Exfoliating Sugar Scrub $10.99 8 fl. Oz that has natural glycerin and exfoliating sugar crystals to gently slough away dry, flaky skin, while leaving it scented with spicy gingerbread. Did I mention that gingerbread is a man magnet? There’s also a tingly, energizing Lip Balm $2.99 that make every day, a holiday.  At these affordable prices, these gingerbread scented Dionis delights are a spicy secret you can share with all your friends (even our guys wanted everything!).  Brave, Smart, Strong and Kind–four traits that everyone wants to have. But they’re also the four scents of a new bath and body collection, also by Dionis, called Inspire. The line of scrubs, creams, body wash and more, feature different inspiration saying on the label. For example, the Sugar Scrub $9.95 I4.5 oz. In "Kind" has the saying "Happiness is in the heart, not in the circumstances" Each scent and saying, and each product, is meant to enhance your well-being—what could be more appropriate at this time of the year? The sugar scrub has natural glycerin exfoliating crystals so it’s not only gentle, but helps really soften and hydrate rough, dry skin. The screw top plastic jar is safe for bath and shower. "Kind" features a fusion of tangerine, fresh ginger, peach nectar, yellow jasmine, and ylang ylang. "Brave" has orchids, fruits, citrus, warm amber, and woods. "Strong" mixes citrus, sweet honeysuckle, lotus flower, white tea, and cedarwood. "Smart" has a soft, watery blend of lily, pink rose dew, lilac blossom, fresh lavender, and orange flower. These feminine scents are also available in a Hand Therapy Cream, Body Lotion, and Three in One Shampoo/Body Wash/Bubble Bath.  None are more than $11.95. Indulge in products that are good not just for the body, but also the mind and spirit

ABOUT THE ADVICE SISTERS "What Works" Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion  Reviews:

The Advice Sisters web site and blog offer impartial, up-close-and-personal product reviews, conducted by  expert beauty & fashion reviewer, Alison Blackman Dunham.  If other opinions are included in a  review, "we" (instead of "I") is used.

My Review Philosophy: This beauty, fashion and cosmetics review column is called "What Works" (not what doesn't). I want to direct you to what I think are great products, not denigrate those I didn't like (but you might love).  All beauty reviews are subjective. It's my responsibility to describe products in a way that offers information, but allows you to use your own, good judgment about whether to buy it or not. I have tested thousands of products and that gives me a strong background on which to base my comments, but in the end, the decision to try something is yours, alone.

A Signature Approach    Many online publications and blogs find it easier and more economical to just post photos and press releases of products "as if" they have actually used them, or get paid for "advertorials" (reviews written in exchange for money).  I only allow genuine reviews. That is, I (or a qualified reviewer) actually try the products reviewed. This approach takes much more time and effort, but it is what distinguishes The Advice Sisters from a lot of others. I know you appreciate the difference.

A Note About  Compensation:  I never have, and never will, write about products using just high resolution photos and press releases, without experiencing the product "in person." These type of  "faux" reviews add to the junk and clutter on the Internet, without offering anything substantive or new.  In order to write real reviews of real products, however, I use samples provided by a company or a public relations firm. There is no way I could write valid, responsible, up-close-and-personal reviews without them.  Sample products and services are not  nearly "compensation" for the tremendous amount of effort it takes to write genuine reviews, nor do free samples influence my experienced opinion of products in any Advice Sisters content. I do not  use "advertorial" (paid content) and, when I choose to include paid advertisements, they are clearly identifiable. If you have any questions about The Advice Sisters policies or practices, feel free to Contact Alison
