Celebrate National Sisters Day (every day) with Danielle Steel

Sisters and close girlfriends share a special bond --one that is created only through time, and through experiencing life's joys and sorrows. My twin sister, Jessica Blackman Freedman (aka. "Advice Sister Jessica,") helped me create The Advice Sisters online publications, and we co-authored a number of "Advice Sisters" self-help books. She and I worked together as business partners, but she was my best friend, too. She died in June, 2002 and is still in my thoughts, every single day.

I missed the deadline to post this for National Sisters Day, Sunday August 5th, but , I think every day is a great time to celebrate sisters.

The very successful and popular novelist, Danielle Steel has made sisters the focus of her book entitled: SISTERS (Delacorte Press, 2007). It's the perfect, fast-paced Summer read. I plan to share a review shortly, in an upcoming issue of the Advice Sisters Enews (if you aren't subscribed yet, it's bi-monthly, full of AdviceSisters news, tips, and reviews--and it's free). I'm not going to give the entire plot away, but you can bet that if it's a Danielle Steel novel, it'll be full of romance, twists and turns, and suspense. I can say that the book features "a tumultuous year of loss and courage" at the heart of Danielle Steel’s new novel about a remarkable family, a stunning tragedy—and what happens when four very different young women come together under one very lively roof! Get the book now at your favorite bookstore, or online.

Another way to let your sisters (or a BFF) know how much you love them, is with a special gift. Last year, Ms. Steel was part of the creation of a lovely new fragrance aptly named: Danielle ($49.50/1.7 oz Eau de Parfum). You can read my blog report of a launch cocktail reception at: http://www.advicesisters.net/2006/10/danielle-steeles-newest-and-its-not
and also get The Advice Sisters' review of this lovely fragrance's Eau de Toilette (de Parfum Spray $65.00 3.3 fl oz; $49.50 1.7 fl. oz. ) in the January 2007 What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion Review Column at: http://www.advicesisters.net/WWarchives/wwjan07.html

--but-- I've just received the Parfum version of this Danielle Fragrance $125.00 0.5 fl. oz. Although it's not quite a "bodice ripper"in the category of a deep oriental fragrance, it's spicier and more intense than the Eau de Toilette, allowing the bottom notes to shine. It's going to be an absolute necessity for Danielle Steel Fans, and for every woman who wants a sophisticated, intriguing scent as her signature. ***(check the Advice Sisters Features Page for a complete review in the October "WHAT WORKS BEAUTY, COSMETICS & FASHION REVIEW COLUMN" -- coming the first week in October).

The Parfum is a nearly perfect floriental--a mixture of flowers and spice. It has lush green notes and Mediterranean mandarin; a heart of butterfly jasmine, sunset orchid and hydroponic rose, and a drydown of blue vetiver, white amber and cashmere musks. I love the elegant, substantial chunk of clear glass with faceted crystal stopper that holds the golden fragrance in the Danielle Parfum version. It simply makes me feel like a Princess every time I apply the scent.

Giving a pink box of Danielle, with it's black lace graphics, is a very cool way for you to tell a sister or friend that she is loved. Let's face it: flowers are nice, but they fade. A bottle of Danielle is lasting...much better than a bouquet! Even for writers, sometimes actions speak louder than words. If my sister was still here, I'd be sending her a copy of Danielle Steel's new book: SISTERS, and a bottle of Danielle Parfum or Eau de Toilette. She'd definitely get the message that she is special and appreciated--sisters day and every day.

Easy Ways To Make Your Pedicure, Safer

I've been getting pedicures for decades, and I never thought it would happen to me, but suddenly one of my toenails seemed a bit, well...yellow. A visit to the doctor confirmed that I had picked up something at the nail salon I definitely didn't want.

Millions of men and women visit salons for manicures and pedicures every day. For the most part, they're perfectly safe. As my doctor informed me, however, even if the salon uses chemical and electronic disinfectants, the strength or heat may not be enough to kill every single, tiny germ on re-usable products, from pushers to clippers, to abrasive tools such as files and buffers,

Here are some ways to help keep your nails beautiful, but also safe, when you get a manicure or pedicure:

1. Buy your own manicure or pedicure kit and take it with you when you visit your manicurist. Make sure you clean and disinfect your manicure kit after each use, even if you are the only one using your kit.

A cute kit I just discovered from CVS's own, brilliantly-budget-friendly line (it costs a lot less than the average manicure), is the ESSENCE OF BEAUTY PERSONAL SALON SAFETY KIT (arp. $6.99). *For more information visit http://www.cvs.com/ or your closest CVS Pharmacy. A six-pack of portable pedicure essentials is housed in a zipper-lock type clear plastic bag, and features a nice, lilac-colored, long-handled plastic nail brush, a crystal glass foot pumice (to smooth and soften feet), a large and fairly rough nail file (to hone down those "claws," and smooth the surface), a set of cherful freen and white candy-cane sriped toe separators (a lot more comfortable than the paper towel twists a lot of salons use), a white block file (to smooth the top of the nail and help polish look it's best), and 2 cuticle sticks (for cleaning under nails and pushing back the cuticle).

I suggest you also invest in a set of high quality steel manicure and pedicure tools. They are an investment that will last for a lifetime.

Here are some other tips you can use to keep your fingers and toes, salon-safe:

2. Remove your old nail polish at home, and bring your favorite nail polish, base coat, and top coat with you. *the Advice Sisters What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review colums always include great new nail products you might like to try. Our September What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column will be up the first week in September, and will feature lots of new colors!

4. Choose your salon, carefully. If the salon looks unkempt or dirty when you arrive, or the manicurists are sniffing and coughing, maybe it's not the best place for you to be. If you're not bringing your own tools, check out the disinfectant containers and make sure that they are clean without any trace of debris. Watch the manicurist and see if s/he is using clean instruments on each client.

5. Pedicure lovers, beware-especially if you have broken or cracked skin. Make sure the pedicure tub is clean and that the tub is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before each use. The same should, be true for the steps you have to climb up and down to get to the tub. You wouldn't just walk anywhere with bare feet, and you shouldn't do so at the nail salon, either. Alas the steps that clients have to walk on with bare feet are usually not cleaned and disinfected before each client,as they should be.

6. Check out your manicurist. If her hands aren't washed before she touches your hands, you may be in for a sorry surprise.

7. If your cuticles are not large, consider asking the manicurist just to push them back with a cuticle softener, rather than cut them cuticle scissors. This reduces your risk of infection due to broken skin occurring.

Gianna Rose Atelier Preview for Fall/Holiday 2007

On Tuesday, August 7th, Lady Mendls Tea Salon (56 Irving Place,, NYC) was the perfect setting for the "Mad Hatters Tea Party" celebrating the debut of the Gianna Rose Atelier Walt Disney collection, and the Fall, Winter and Holiday 2007 Collections. This tea palace is part of the luxurious Inn at Irving Place, and it's a must-go-to-at-least-once with your BFF, Victorian-style tea parlor that makes you feel like you are really in another era.

In this era, my entrance was hot and sweaty. It was searingly hot outside, and I'd just come from the Javits Center (where I was covering FAME, Moda Manhattan, and Accessories, the Show). I revived, when I finally got to meet some of the great women I've been working with on Gianna Rose Atelier. *For past Advice Sisters reviews of Gianna Rose Atelier, check our What Works Archives at: http://www.advicesisters.net/WWarchives/wwarcindex.html or try our SEARCH Box options on the Current What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion Review Column: http://www.advicesisters.net/WWarchives/wwarcindex.html

Gianna Rose Atelier is a line of products that is one of my personal favorites, not just because of the high quality, reasonably priced products in imaginative shapes, but also because the packaging is so beautiful, it's like getting more than one item to enjoy. For example, the Holiday Collection (see photo to the left) features Substantial, cardboard gift boxes covered with silver metallic paper overlayed with a "Victorian-style" matte gold paisley design, wrapped with a silvery satin ribbon and a gift card. I can definitely see re-using the box to store special objects from handkerchiefs to hairpins. The holiday collection "Holiday Tower" (*will be $79.50) features three boxes of beautifully embossed soaps, scented with various winter scents such as vanilla, sandalwood, pine, bergamot, Jasmine and Lavender. They are beautifully shaped as holiday ornaments, ripe pears, and flat squares with embossed with snowflakes. The Holiday Tower is also tied with a glittery, snowflake ornament. You can just about see the glittery ornament hanging from the pewter vase. You can also get these products separately, and we will be reviewing them in an upcoming What Works column, so definitely watch for them. Who needs wrapping paper, and why waste the time???

The BIG news for Gianna Rose Atelier is that the company is collaborating with beloved Walt Disney to create a new collection: Gianna Rose for Walt Disney. As the Disney brand is a delight for people of all ages, so too will be this new, Gianna Rose collection. I was delighted to meet Blair Buckley, Vice President of Product Development for Gianna Rose Atelier, in person. Everyone (including the Advice Sisters) loves this new collection, which is debuting at the International Gift Fair next week. My favorite in this collection (and I don't want to give ALL away before we get a chance to review it for you) is the Alice's English Garden, that captures delicate soap "petals" in light rose and white, in a clear, glass, apothecary jar. The paisley box (wrapped with a silky ribbon and gift tag) brings the theme home, with Alice's journey through the garden, and "secret" images of Alice, the white rabbit, the Cheshire cat, and the caterpillar. The other items in the collection feature beautifully scented soaps in "Alice in Wonderland" shapes, all in richly colored "Alice-themed" gift boxes. All the items in the collection will sell for $37.50.

For Fall, Gianna Rose Atelier fans will be delighted to learn about the Fall/Winter Collection. Frogs are considered lucky in a lot of cultures, and I am predicting that everyone will want to have the new, Magic Frog Candle $25.00--a large, green, life-like frog scented with light "water Lilly" that is nestled on his own, white, porcelain "Lilly pad." He is so adorable, you might not want to light the wick, but your Magic Frog will burn in the middle, so he'll be all yours (without the head falling off or burning into the candle) until the candle's end. There is also a lovely, linen-scented, ivory-colored hen candle. For Fall/Winter two news soaps feature La Chouette, A white, lychee-scented owl (really cute--what a nice gift for a favorite teacher or any wise person) and Le Cocker Spaniel $21.00, a black-colored, green tea and bergamot scented doggie.

If you're hosting a Thanksgiving dinner this year at your house, or want to bring something special for your host/hostess, the Collection De Nature are beautifully-packaged, molded soaps with amazing, holiday-scents that come either in lovely, re-usable, cardboard slider boxes $24.00/4 with Victorian designs in harvest colors, or with decorative, pottery bowls $29.50/4. I particularly liked the Pinecone & Acorn-shaped Soaps with their savory, spicy blend of sandalwood, pine and night blooming jasmine. There is also a pumpkin and squash collection featuring sweet brown sugar, pumpkin and fig. Here is my photo of the "Thanksgiving" display at the launch, and a closeup of some of the soaps:

Marvelous Moda Manhattan, FAME and Accesories The Show-what's new for Holiday/Resort 1007-2008?

Moda Manhttan, Accessories, the Show, and FAME are a trio of trade shows that, in total, feature over 150,000 net square feet and nearly 3,000 lines of fashion. It is, in fact, one of the few venues in the world that wholesale buyers can find the equivalent of five city blocks of RTW (ready to wear) fashion and accessories, all in one place! MY favorite of the three, The Accesories Show is the only juried, all-accessories trade event in the entire USA. Even though th heat has been searingly hot, it was cool and "looking towards Winter" at the Javits Center August 5th through the 7th for the Holiday/Resort 2007-08 collections.

These shows are not open to the general public, and are of primary interest to wholesalers (more than 8000) looking to obtain the newest and best items for their retail establishments. Even though I attend as a member of the press, and can't place orders, these shows always inspire me. The organizer is Business Journals Inc (BJI), a business media company that produces 5 business-to-business magazines, 8 trade shows, and a number of seminars and web sites. They have always been accommodating to The Advice Sisters, and the well-attended shows give me a chance to get the same, sneak peak at fashion trends for the next quarter that the buyers have. In addition, I always stumble upon a few real "finds" that I can share with Advice Sisters Readers on this blog, in the Advice Sisters Enews, and of course, in the Advice Sisters monthly "What Works" Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review columns.

For some reason, however, as much as I love the shows and always plan to attend one of the first days, I find myself there on the very last day, on the very last afternoon. That means I have to race around like crazy (the Javits Center is huge, and this show takes up nearly two floors)! This morning, Carl Ditmars, my personal trainer, had me do some leg exercises and I guess I overdid them, because before I got to the show, I started limping, and the pain got progressively worse as I walked around. But, there I was, already at the Javits Center, and I wasn't going to waste a minute! I picked up my press badge, and started walking, and walking, and walking, and walking!

When you attend a show this large, soon a lot of "wares" seem to blend into one another. The Fall 2007 runway shows featured so many dour grey, black, brown and beige clothes, and it seems that there will also be a lot of the same for Holiday/Resort 2007-2008. The black, grey, brown, and ivory sweaters, coats, ponchos, and dresses made me long for more color, but along with the bland, were quite a few colorful T-shirts and assorted resort-wear "boho" sundresses in cheerful prints.

If you're wondering what single item you'll need to be in fashion, I have two words: "get glittery." For the Holiday/Resort 2007-2008 season, the BIG THING is a focus is on "jewels." Everything was jewelled, from handbags liberally spiced with rhinestones, gold chains, and "faux" stones, to the large, leather, rhinestone-studded belts from Kippys (that make even a simple black dress, or jeans and a T-shirt look rock-star special), to stones and sequins and rhinestones all over shoes and sandals, Glitter and rhinestones T-shirts, hair jewelry and hats, to to sequined and tasselled velvet, leather, suede, and silk everything. Everything was "glam," and richly embellished. I probably was a raccoon in my last life (they love shiny objects) because if there's one thing I can't resist, it's a glittery accessory. Give me glitter, and make me smile! Personally, I couldn't pass up the Kippys belts, and bought a not-so-basic black leather one liberally studded with crystals. A belt like this is an investment piece, but one that's so much fun that I know I'll reach for it over and over again for years to come, to add some flash and a bit of daring to any drab Fall and Winter clothes. Another, much more affordable "find" that I encountered at the show are the stretchy, trendy, soft hairbands from Violet Love. Their latest collection features bold prints, including some animal prints that will work so well with Fall's earthy colors. These are stretchy, but stay put, and you can crunch them up for a thin band, or pull the fabric out for a wide look, too. A hairband is so versatile! Wear one on a bad hair day, or to add color to a simple outfit, or simply because it's a fun, easy, no-brainer accessory. I'll be reviewing Violet Love hairbands in the September What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column, so watch for it!

Other trends that seemed to be popular are shawls, many of velvet with "burnout" designs, and some embellished with stones or sequins, taking place of the plain Pashmina (still my favorite accessory to carry just in case it gets cold, or especially on airplanes). There were also tons of brightly colored sandals many of which were embellished. Alas, the "thong" trend is still out there, and I don't know how anyone else wears these, but I've never been able to walk more than a few blocks with anything between my toes! In the jewelry area, the trend that will not die are those "dainty" chains and earrings, many with tiny semi-precious stones (too small for the flashy, but just right for girly types), and tons of sparkling cubic zirconia pieces from tiny, to huge. For those who like bold pieces, there were a lot of chunky beads and bracelets, and significant looking "ethnic" jewelry with huge Ganesh heads, carved bone pendants, and strands and strands of wooden beads or seed beads that make a definite statement and cover up anything you wish. If you're looking for a new handbag, note that most are still quite large. Plain is not an option--for Holiday/Resort you'll find your bags embellished with everything you can think of including a lot of animal prints (good) and heavy chain handles (not so good if you carry as much stuff as I do around with you), plus applique, mixed leathers, and of course, crystals and rhinestones.

I can't wait for the next round of these shows!
