Chi Organics Olive Nutrient Therapy - life and energy for your hair!

Qi (Ch'i), in traditional Chinese, describes the"the natural energy of the Universe." In Chinese culture, it's the active principle forming part of any living thing. It is frequently translated as "energy flow and the literal translation is "air" or "breath."

I recently received products from the Chi Organics Olive Nutrient Therapy by Farouk Systems Group (the nifty company that makes those high-quality heat styling tools). "Chi" seems to be a perfect name for these products, because they really do give your hair a breath of fresh air, or at least, new life and energy.

As you can see from the photo, the bottle are attractive, green plastic, with bright orange flip top caps and graphics that will appeal to men as well as women. But the line isn't all about the outside packaging. The products are designed to promote wellness through the proper balance of necessary nutrients, using olive ingredients, vitamins, herbs and essential oils. The ancient melds with American high tech to bring your hair good looks and "hair wellness." If you read this the Advice Sisters What Works Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review columns or this blog, you already know that environmental saboteurs beyond your control (e.g. wind, chemical and heat tools) can damage your hair. This product line helps protect against, and mitigate, damage.

Lots of products are good for all hair types and safe for hair that is colored, and lots of products have natural ingredients and essential oils, but not all of them are created equal. I really liked the Chi Olive Nutrient Therapy Shampoo 12 fl. oz $24.00 and Conditioner 12 fl. oz. $24.00*other sizes and prices are available. Normally I think of olive oil as being super-hydrating, but oily (is is oil, after all). The shampoo was actually light, and while there was plenty of lather, it washed out completely, leaving softness with no greasy residue. I also like that it's sulfate and paraben-free and contains certified organic essential oils. The Conditioner was also great. I left it on for 60 seconds as suggested, and didn't use any other conditioning agents, and my hair was surprisingly super-soft.

I also tried the Olive Nutrient Therapy Glaze Suggested Retail Price $18.00 Each 12 fl.oz to give my hair a bit of light/medium control while styling. It also has essential, natural oils and a special blend of extracts that adds shine. The results were lovely: soft, healthy looking hair with lots of movement and shine...what more could you ask for? Also in the line is are a Treatment Paste $28.00 6 fl. oz to give you hair some extra TLC (leave on 1-3 minutes and rinse or for more intense treatment, apply heat or a hot towel and leave on for 15 minutes) plus a Silk Oil $20.00 2 fl. oz *(a little goes a long way). This leave-in treatment helps to help nourish and repair --especially split ends *(great for the beach) and to add shine. There's also a Spritz $20.00 12 fl. oz for control (even on those windy, humid and rainy days) that's as impressive as the rest of the line.

Icescapes: a book by Randy Fitzgerald and artist Tom Holmes

Solar Flare (From Icescapes)

From Wikipedia: "Ice is the name given to any one of the 15 known crystalline solid phases of water....It can appear transparent or an opaque bluish-white color depending on the presence of impurities such as air. The addition of other materials such as soil may further alter the appearance. The most common phase transition to ice Ih occurs when liquid water is cooled below 0 °C (273.15 K, 32 °F) at standard atmospheric pressure. It can also deposit from a vapor with no intervening liquid phase, such as in the formation of frost. Ice appears in nature in forms as varied as snowflakes and hail, icicles, glaciers, pack ice, and entire polar ice caps. "

Rising Moon (from Icescapes)

Icescapes by photographer Randy Fitzgerald and sculptor Tom Holmes, is a unique photographic, coffee-table-type book of 34 stunning color photographs that demonstrate the incredible detail and beauty of ice. Randy and Tom work independently and collaboratively to create one of a kind, of-the-moment ice sculptures with coloring, and even the beauty of ice as it begins to melt. These unique photographs explore frozen water in a way you've never seen it, before.

The Sun (from Icescapes)

Although it is Summer, and it's quite hot and humid, before we know it, Winter will be back. Love it or loathe it, ice will be everywhere! Icescapes will give you more respect for the beauty of Winter. Ice isn't just something to slip on, or skate on, or cool your drinks with. Ice, generally perceived as clear and uninteresting, is anything but! These photos are bursting with life!

Eclipsing the Sun (from Icescapes) Frozen Planet (from Icescapes)

I can't post every photograph I loved from this book, but what's so amazing about all of them is how the artist can transform the ice into photos that you would never imagine came from frozen water. For example, "Freefall" colored blue against a background of red, reminds me of stalagmites growing deep within a cave. "Deep Space" looks like a green and turquoise Earth, or perhaps a large body of water as seen from outer space. Each one of these gorgeous photos will absorb your full attention. Even better, you'll see something new and wonderful in them every time you open the book.

Randy Fitzgerald is a talented photographer with a lifelong relationship with the biological sciences and the natural environment he captures around the globe. Tom Holmes is a talented sculptor. Together, these two artists make the mundane, marvellous! The book would make a wonderful gift for a special person, or for yourself "just because." You'll never tire of looking at these fascinating photographs. ICESCAPES $75.00/book is available from artist Tom Holmes http://www.tomholmes.com/contact.htm

Great Ideas from Everyday With Rachel Ray

I've been behind the scenes at Fashion Week many times, but getting "backstage" to see what goes on behind the scenes for a magazine is something new for me. I couldn't resist the invitation to visit the Everyday with Rachel Ray Magazine Test kitchen. So this isn't a post about beauty (although the beauty of great, easy to prepare food is a beautiful thing) it is about being "backstage" where all the recipes are tested. My visit coincided with the publication of the July 2008 issue of the magazine. Here are a few of my favorite recipes from that issue (of course you'll find more in the actual magazine and on the Everyday With Rachel Ray magazine web site:

Every Day With Rachel Ray magazine features recipes and food, but it's also about lifestyles. There are editors who pick out the best of the best each issue in gifts, home accessories...even beauty items. The irst thing I noticed when I walked in was how pretty the tables looked. Upon closer inspections, however I realized that these clever centerpieces were simply inexpensive wine glasses overturned on a few blossoms, with votive candles on the tops. My photo doesn't do it justice...this is super-easy and looks so pretty...a perfect centerpiece for July 4th (use red, white and blue flowers).

The real business of creating and testing recipies goes on in the test kitchen. We were told that we were the first ones to be invited in. It was absolutely a dream kitchen, with pull-out drawers and room for everything.

We (editors and bloggers) were invited to try our hand at dipping ice-cream bonbons --this is something I've always wanted to do, but I never could figure out how to get anything "dipped" perfectly. The secrets? First, use good chocolate in a double boiler, and when it's melted and smooth, simply dump the "bon bon" (or strawberry, or petite fours) into the chocolate, gently move it around with a FORK until the piece is covered, and then lift it out with the fork, letting the chocolate drip through the tines! Trust me, it works. If you are dipping something like these mini ice cream bon-bons (simply ice cream made into tiny balls with a mini melon-baller and then frozen solid to a small vanilla wafer) make sure they are really solid before you try dipping them in hot chocolate. Of course that makes sense, but anything mushy or not solid will ruin your chocolate (not to mention your dessert)!

Strawberry Bonbons
Makes: 25
Prep: 20 minutes (plus freezing)
Cook: 25 minutes

Ingredients:
1 pint strawberries, finely chopped
1 tablespoon sugar
1 pint vanilla ice cream, softened
25 plain vanilla wafers
1 pound dark chocolate, chopped
½ cup pistachios, chopped

Directions:

In a medium saucepan, simmer the strawberries and sugar over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and syrupy, about 20 minutes. Let cool.

Transfer the ice cream to a large bowl; fold in ½ cup strawberry sauce (reserve the remaining sauce for another use). Cover and freeze until firm, about 1 hour.

Place the cookies flat side down on a parchment-paper-lined baking sheet. Top each cookie with 1 small scoop of ice cream. Freeze until firm, about 30 minutes.

In a double boiler, melt three-quarters of the chocolate. Remove from the heat and stir in the remaining chocolate until melted. Dunk each bonbon into the chocolate to coat; return to the prepared baking sheet. Immediately sprinkle with the pistachios. Freeze until firm, about 30 minutes.

We sipped these delicious, Pineapple Mojitos:

1 bunch fresh mint, stems discarded
2 limes, each cut into 8 wedges
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup pineapple juice
1 cup canned crushed pineapple
1 cup light rum
4 cups ice cubes
1 cup club soda

In each of 8 highball glasses, crush together one-eighth of the mint leaves, 2 lime wedges and 1 tablespoon sugar. Stir in 2 tablespoons pineapple juice, 2 tablespoons crushed pineapple and 2 tablespoons rum until the sugar is dissolved. Add 1/2 cup ice cubes and a splash of club soda to each glass. Serve immediately

I don't have the room to add all the recipes were tried, but they were all yummy, and true to Rachel Ray's' signature, easy on the budget and your schedule. There are tons of recipes in the July issue of the Magazine...on newsstands now...perfect for July 4th and all Summer--and check out the the Everyday With Rachel Ray magazine web site

Protect Yourself from the "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!"

Are you missing that great tomato taste in your summer recipes, but you're still wondering if you might be felled by the "attack of the killer tomatoes" (salmonella)? Try canned tomatoes. Companies (e.g. Del Monte) offer lots of canned tomato options, including Organic, Diced, Stewed and No Salt Added. They're safe, convenient, and a great choice while salmonella still threatens tomato crops.

Tomatoes contain lycopene – a leading ingredient in fighting cardiovascular disease. Antioxidant properties of lycopene are resistant to heat and cooking and of course, if you love the taste, you can't do without! The Just One More for Healthy Living campaign encourages Americans to add an additional serving of fruits and vegetables (including tomatoes) to their diets. Two easy recipes to help you think about healthy eating and that include tomatoes, follow (you can get more on the web site) featuring canned tomatoes:

Thai Chicken & Vegetable Curry Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 10 minutes Servings: 4

Ingredients: 12oz. skinless, boneless chicken breast halves or thighs
1 tsp. curry powder 2 tbsp. oil
1 can (14-1/2oz.) Del Monte Organic Diced Tomatoes
1 can (14-1/2oz.) Del Monte Organic Cut Green Beans, drained
1 can (14-1/2oz.) Del Monte Organic Sliced Carrots, drained
1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper
2 cups hot cooked rice

Directions: Cut chicken into three-quarter inch cubes; toss chicken evenly with curry powder Heat oil in large skillet; add chicken. Cook and stir over medium-high heat for 3 minutes Add undrained tomatoes, beans, carrots and crushed red pepper. Simmer, uncovered, 5 minutes Serve over rice and sprinkle with 1/4 cup peanuts or toasted coconut, if desired
...how easy!

Santa Fe Wraps Prep Time: 5 minutes Cooking Time: 15 minutes Servings: 6

Ingredients: 12 oz. ground beef
1 can (14-1/2 oz.) Del Monte Diced Tomatoes
1 Tbsp. chili powder ½ tsp. ground cumin
1 can (15-1/4 oz.) Del Monte Whole Kernel Corn, drained
1 pkg. (3 oz.) cream cheese, cut up
1 jalapeno pepper (optional), finely chopped
6 (8-inch) flour tortillas

Directions: Brown meat in large skillet, drain. Stir in undrained tomatoes, chili powder and cumin. Bring to boil; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, 5 minutes Stir in corn, cheese and jalapenos; stir until cheese melts Spoon mixture onto tortillas and roll up or fold Serve with shredded lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese and salsa, if desired

Alison's Note: A quick check of the US FDA website says that types of tomatoes not linked to any illnesses are cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, and tomatoes with the vine still attached...Since mid April, there have been 652 reported cases of salmonellosis nationwide caused by Salmonella Saintpaul, an uncommon form of Salmonella. At least 71 hospitalizations have been reported. For more information, visit the FDA Web Site: http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/tomatoes.html

Tips for Transforming Your Hair, from a Top John Frieda Stylist

Since May, the John Frieda See for Yourself Salon Tour has been traveling around the country stopping in cities like Orlando, Atlanta, D.C. and Philadelphia giving hair transformations to women for free *see the AdviceSisters Forums Post (http://advicesisters.net/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=129.0)

Celebrity stylist Harry Josh, sought after by A-listers such as Hilary Swank, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Gisele Bundchen (just to name a few) shared some tips on summer styling for Advice Sisters Blog readers. Summer hair can be challenging. Here are some of his tips (and suggested products) to make your hair calm, chic, and frizz-free:

Start with a shampoo and conditioner that helps block out moisture and keeps your style in tact. Harry suggests Weather Works by Frizz-Ease Weather-Proofing Shampoo and Conditioner from the John Frieda Collection. These types of products add a protective barrier to yur hair that helps shield out unwanted moisture (and lock in the needed moisture) so your hair stays healthy and shiny. They also protect againstUV rays that can damage hair and cause color fading (that "brassy" look no one wants).

Different types of hair have different styling challenges in the Summertime.

Tips for Styling Curly Hair: Not all curls are cute or pretty. Curly or coarse hair likes to get "big" (or "wild" ) in Summer's heat and humidity. If you don't want to wears your up or in a ponytail, here are some tips to make curls literally, shine!

Once hair is toweled dry, apply a frizz-fighter (Josh liked Weather Works by Frizz-Ease Weather-Proofing Style Sealent Crème). Work it in from root to end to help control the frizz and make hair more manageable.

Blow dry hair, wrapping pieces around your fingers to give it a natural curl.

Once your hair is completely dry, rub a small amount of a serum (e.g. John Frieda Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Serum) between your fingers and apply it to the ends. These types of products have silicone or other protective coatings that add instant shine and softness, and keep the frizz factor to a minimum.

Tips for Styling Straight Hair: Straight hair can get flat and stringy in the heat. Here's how to keep your sleek styles chic:

Apply a small amount of smoothing agent to your hair when it's wet to protect it from heat and styling damage (Harry Josh likes John Frieda Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Serum ) and then style. If your hair is dry, Josh suggests applying at bit rizz-Ease Secret Weapon Crème (a dime-sized amount will do) and smooth it from root to end for a smooth look.

Alison's Note: these are great suggestions, but good hair accessories and styling tools will also help you keep wild hair under contol.
...and if all else fails,

Noir Cosmetics for Smoky Eyes and Beyond

Noir Cosmetics is a new line of products by a Canadian woman, Caroline Cohen, who truly thinks all black is beautiful--when it's on your eyes! Noir Cosmetics are specialists in one one thing: eye makeup, and they create products only in different shades of black! That doesn't mean that they're ll the same, as you'll see in the descriptions below. Each product fills a specific need or purpose, and while all of the products are only in black, they're quite different. If you think all black is just, well, black, consider how difficult it is to match two different black items. They may look the same (black) individually, but together, they never seem to be quite the same hue. Noir Cosmetics's product line features a dozen, black-tinted products, all of which come in matte black cardboard packaging with white lettering that reminds me very much of another beloved makeup brand (Hint: it rhymes with "tack").

The only product Noir Cosmetics makes with colors other than black is their Jewel Box Eyeshadow Palette $30.00. An elongated oval, matte, black plastic compact (with mini pony-hair brush and slim mirror is filled with three very nice, silky shadows: a creamy, pearly, slightly shimmery super-light peach, a shimmery silver, and a sparkling, inky black. Use all three for lid colors, and the black shadow also works beautifully as a liner, but as a trio, they create the quintessential smoky eye look everyone wants (and that's not fading away any time soon).

The Lifeline Liquid Eyeliner $15.00 in "True Black" is a super-slim, elegantly tapered tube with a super-fine-line brush tip that dispenses an inky, intense, black liner that looks retro, punk, chic, ladylike...whatever you want it to be, depending upon how you apply it. It goes on smoothly, even if your hand tends to shake a bit.

More challenging for me (I just hate to dip a brush into a jar of liner), but easier for many to apply, is the Noir Gel Liner $15.00 in "Royal Black," a slightly softer but still intense, matte black. It's water-resistant, and long-lasting, yet you can blend your mistakes (if you make any) into a smokey eye and no one will be the wiser! The Noir Cosmetics High Precision Eyeliner Bush $12.00 has a perfectly sharp, beautifully shaped tip to help you get get a great line. Personally, I still think you need to have talent to use a liner and brush, but if you feel comfortable with a brush application, this is a good, inexpensive brush for your collection.

Eye Pencils:
I love Kohl Eyeliners. They're make me feel exotic, and their super-soft formula makes it easy to apply and blend. The Koh Eyeliner Crayon $13.00 is richly pigmented, but it's a soft black with a hint of smoke in it. A natural wax formula helps the pencil slide and glide smoothly...great if you're not so steady in your application.

The Long-Wear Eyeliner $13.00 in "Forever Noir" is also a soft pencil with a shiny, laminated exterior shell. It isn't quite as soft of the Kohl pencil, but it's still easy to apply. It's black, but more of a softer, cashmere black. It also contains good-for-your-lids ingredients such as jojoba oil and Vitamin E. I tested this one in hot, humid conditions, and it didn't run or fade for hours.

The Ultra Rich Eye Pencil $15.00 in "Black," is a short, stubby pencil in a medium black. It's 6mm lead size is 2mm larger than most standard pencils, making it easy to smudge this portable, creamy liner/shadow into an instant smokey eye. Every woman should have one of these in her makeup bag to multi-task as needed!

My favorite type of eyeliner pencil is a dual-tipped one. That's why I love the Smooth Blend Eyeliner $15.00 in "Smog." This soft, easy to apply pencil liner is intense, inky black, yet the smudger tip lets you change it's attitude. Wear it deep and intense as-is, or blend and smudge it to soften the color and change the look all the way to "grey" (no wonder it's called "Smog")!

Another favorite of mine in this seemingly endless choice of Noir Cosmetics black eye liners is the Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner $14.00 in "Jet." It combines the portability and ease of a slim pencil, with the blendability and long-wear of a gel or liquid. The soft, rich black is flattering on virtually everyone, and Vitamins C and E make the pencil creamy and easy to wear. The retractable pencil ensures that you always have a clean, sharp tip, too. This is another must-have in your makeup bag!

To keep the pencils sharp and for a clean line, there's a nifty Pencil Sharpener $6.00 with three different sizes of holes to keep any size of pencil, sharp. It's also got a snap-on cover and a blade cleaner.

And, after you've applied one or more of these liners, you'll want to finish the look with a great mascara. I really like the Noir Cosmetics Mascara $14.00 in "Black Out." This excellent mascara goes on deep black and somewhat shiny, leaving lashes fully covered, thanks to a generously-sized mascara wand. The mascara is build-able, so you can go "nice" for daytime, and all the way to "wildly sexy" for drama in the evening.

At the end of the day, what goes on, must come off. Noir Cosmetics Eye Makeup Remover $11.00 4 fl. oz is the color of the Mediterranean Sea and comes in a clear, plastic, flip-top bottle. With all that black color, you need a product that will wipe it clean without too much of a struggle, and this makeup remover dissolves the "smoke" and leaves your skin fresh and clean again. This water-based makeup remover didn't irritate my eyes. It's suitable for all skin types, and it's oil-free. What more could you ask from a bottle of makeup remover?!

If you love the smoky eye look, or if you're just looking to replace some of your ho-hum" basic black eyeliners and mascaras, you'll want to visit the web site at http://www.noircosmetics.com and check these out for yourself!

Where the Wild Things Are NOT (or how to tame wild hair within seconds)!

Last night I went to see James Taylor at Jones Beach (watch YouTube video). It was a humid night and the sky was full of dark clouds. We went armed with umbrellas, and even a few plastic bags in case the heavens opened up. This post really isn't about the James Taylor concert, although James was great (yes, this man can sing). It's really about my wild and crazy post-concert hair! When I got home, my carefully blown-out straight style was literally in a mass of waves--really wild and crazy waves -- not at all the "cute" and "controlled" type of curly.

Luckily, I had two things on hand today that I just happened to have in the queue to review for the Advice Sisters "What Works" Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column for September/October this Fall (the July/August column will be up the first week in July, and you can currently check out May/June's huge, two-page column at http://www.advicesisters.net/whatworkscol3.html ). Both of these items can tame the "wild thing" called super-frizzy, curly or wavy hair, in just seconds!

The first is a low tech, easy fix: a hairband! I didn’t think there could be anything really new when it comes to this classic hair tool since they're been a favorite of women for so long, but this new, Scünci FlexiWrap Hair band $3.99 is not your mother's hairband. This one is bendable, flexible, stretchy and completely comfortable. It has the same, sleek good looks of traditional plastic and fabric hair bands, but without the hard, rigid frame that can pinch and crack and feel downright uncomfy on your head. The new Flexi-Wrap features a braided, patent-look, or cutwork hair band that looks like the solid, rigid ones but it's fold-able and soft, and stays put, thanks to a ponytail-type elastic that stretches to just the right size to hold fast to the back of your head. The FlexiWrap Hair Band really gives you a customized fit the one-size-fits all rigid ones can't, and it does it without pinching, binding, or pulling. This hairband stays so secure you can even exercise with it and it wont slip off. But you won’t even know you have it on!

The hairband in the photo is obviously the clear one. It looks beautiful on every type of hair, letting your natural color shine through. There’s also a tortoise-shell style, wide, braided band, and a slimmer, solid, black patent leather look hair band --one to go with just about everything you own. These make great beach and travel companies. Simply fold them almost completely flat for travel, and they won’t break in your bag -- the cleverest idea I’ve seen in hair ornaments in a long, long time. Even better, they cost less than lunch! They're sure to be new classics. and you’ll reach for these to tame wild hair (and just because they're great looking) on bad hair days, and good ones, too!

But if you can't stand the curls, the frizz, or the fuss, you'll want to bring out the effective but easy to use, 'big gun" the Infiniti Nano Silver Ionic Steam Straightener by Conair $129.99. I actually saw this a few weeks ago on one of those weekend television info-mercial programs (I was not doing anything early in the morning, and was flipping channels). The thing is, it's really impressive both in power and versatility. The TV ad showed women with really wild, seriously curly, or tightly permed hair as before and after, but you could actually see the flat iron do it's job with one swipe of the iron. There they were, former wild and curly girls, with sleek, shiny, perfectly straight hair!

The iron is an eye-catching red color, but what will really catch your eye are the high-tech bennies, courtesy of nano silver tourmaline ceramic plates and a tw0-stage steam and lock technology, to keep the look lasting longer. The iron simply glides through even the most coarse, thick, and wild hair, like a steamroller. The nano silver technology helps hair glide through the plates, while the tourmaline ceramic plates smooth the hair cuticle layer, condition, and protect hair from damage since you can effectively use high heat for less time. This way, your hair doesn't get so "fried." There's a removable water reservoir with variable steam settings for up to 20 minutes of continuous steam (steam helps the style set and stay smooth, hours longer). Two heating elements in this high-tech tool and five heat settings from a mild 202 degrees to 395 degrees help tame hair that simply won’t take "no" for an answer! Other nice features are the retractable, adjustable height detangling "teeth" that help hold hair straight. The ionic steam straightener is a true, added bonus it is equipped with a true ion generator that releases 2 million ions/cm3 to straighten and reduce frizz, and make hair feel soft and silky. A professional style swivel cord rotates 360 degrees so you can get to the back of your head without fighting the cord. When you're done, the iron is going to be hot, but there's a silver-y, heat-resistant travel bag included with your iron. Use it, and you'll still be able to safely pack it up right away without fear.

It's one thing to see amazing results on TV, but does this iron work as well for the average person (or at least on my currently wild-from-the-humidity, hair)? For starters, this flat iron is good for all hair types. If yours is fairly mild and straight, this flat iron will work wonders. But if your hair tends to be curly or frizzy, it’s one of the best "mane tamers" I've seen in a long time.
Although my hair isn’t normally that wild and curly, it is thick, wavy, and sometimes, stubborn. The Infiniti Nano Silver Ionic Steam Flat Iron let me get my hair totally straight without a struggle, even after my hair was immersed last night in the worst possible conditions. My hair was once again shiny, soft, straight, and manageable. A woman on the info-mercial said: "It’s by Conair, who wouldn’t trust it?" It may cost a few dollars more, but a good flat iron like this one will save your time, your sanity, and your sense of style!

Are Salon Treaments Worth It? My Visit to Angelo David Salon With Redken's Color Expert David Stanko

The reception area at Angelo David Salon

At the Angelo David Salon on 43rd Street Between Vanderbilt and Madison Avenues, you can buy lots of home-use hair treatments. In-the-salon treatments are an added cost, and you may wonder whether or not these treatments are worth the extra. To find out I visited Redken's Color consultant David Stanko at the Angelo David Salon (48 E 43rd Street, 2nd Floor, between Madison & Vanderbilt).
David Stanko is a color expert. His work has been featured in top fashion publications, including Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, In-Style, Latina and Elle, and nearly every North American trade magazine. He clearly loves working with and thinking about color. "I'm always doing people.s haircolor in my head: the woman sitting across from me on the subway, the girls who pass me at a sidewalk café, even the guy walking his dog on my way home, " he says..."and every silent encounter is its own technical critique session: Where did this one.s color take a wrong turn? Where could that one have taken the extra step from good enough to really great?" Among his accolades, David was honored by HaircolorUSA in both 1999 and 2000 as "Best Educator" and "Most Inspirational Educator." If anyone knows whether in-salon treatments really work, it's David. But I wasn't just at the salon to enjoy David's expertise (although that was great)! I was there to try two Redken in-salon treatment/color products: Shades EQ and the Chemistry System.

The Chemistry System:

I first learned about the Chemistry System at a Redken-sponsored event with David Stanko and Tracy Cunningham ( Redken's Creative Consultant For Color). The Chemistry system is a customized treatment that can help you calm frizz, get shine, tame flyaways, help your color last longer, and even strengthen hair. The treatment can transform your hair in just about five minutes. Even better, your stylist can target a few different hair challenges by mixing one or more formulas or "shots" to give your hair exactly what it needs. All the shots can be blended together except for the "Dandruff Control Shot," for truly personalized hair solutions. There is a "Strength Shot" for distressed hair, a "Protect Shot" for color-treated hair; a "Soft Shot" for dry/brittle hair; an "Anti-Frizz Shot" for very dry/unruly hair; and a "Dandruff Control Shot" for dry/flaky scalps. New to The Chemistry System is the "Real Control Shotbooster" for dense/dry/sensitized hair. It repairs damaged areas of the cuticle to instantly transform even straw-like strands, leaving your hair smooth, manageable and strong. To keep the treatment working even longer, there's an optional, take home a haircare maintenance system (smaller-sized products) that correspond to the treatment you've just had. David Stanko is a big fan of The Chemistry System. According to David: “The Chemistry System is one of the biggest breakthroughs I’ve experienced in my career.....Consumers will see more manageable hair, and those with color treated hair will notice longer-lasting color results and vibrancy as well as improved condition."

Along with The Chemistry System I tried Shades EQ.

Shades EQ: At the Total Beauty Summit last month, I was fortunate to have my hair colored by Dusty Simington from Salon Gregories. Alas red shades tend to fade the fastest (especially on wavy, thick, coarse hair like mine) and I knew that the gorgeous copper color just wasn't going to last forever. By the time I met David Stanko (two celeb stylists in just about five weeks), my color was fading from copper to brassy strawberry. David suggested I try a Redken Shades EQ color/treatment along with the Chemistry System.

I quickly found out that Shades EQ is the #1 long-lasting no-ammonia demi-permanent haircolor in the U.S.A . It's not new (just new to me) and it's actually been around for more than 2o years. It is used in-salon to glaze, refresh or correct natural or color hair. "Demi-permanent" means it will last about 4-8 weeks and fade out eventually. If you coat your hair with several treatments of shades EQ, however, the color begins to build up and lasts longer. There are 55 shades of Shades EQ including clear, which just leaves a great gloss on your hair. With all these individual shades, a good stylist can mix up a color that's yours, alone.

David Stanko at Angelo David Salon

While David worked his magic on my hair, I asked him what he thought would be trendy color this Fall. He immediately said: "more subdued, subtle color." David sees a trend towards less bold and chunky color. He envisions monochromatic color that's almost single process but with added, subtle hints or tones to add interest. He said he thought the end of bold and chunky color might be due to the fact that the nation as a whole is subdued at the moment. But subdued color doesn't mean no color. This is still a little luxury that women feel they can and should indulge in. Nearly 50% of Redken’s business results from professional haircolor.

A Tour of Angelo David Salon, with Angelo: I'd never been to the Angelo David salon before, so the very charming Angelo --the owner of Angelo David Salon, stopped graciously took me on a quick tour of the salon. Located in the heart of New York City, at 48 East 43rd St., one block from Grand Central, the salon caters to on-the-go clients, but also has a relaxed, user-friendly atmosphere. Unlike many salons where people definitely come to gawk and to be seen, customized services here are delivered in cozy main salon or in spacious, private rooms. As he describes it, Angelo's overall approach to hair and extensions is unique, and holistic. Clients may come in for a hair makeover for a special event or to solve a specific problem. A thorough assessment and a plan of attack is created before any work is done, with the clientss age, expectations, skin coloring, lifestyle and needs taken into consideration,a long with suggestions for appropriate hair, color, style, and even whether or not extensions are needed.

The salon is best known for Angelo's Couture Hair Extensions and Additions.™ but also for customized cuts, one-of-a-kind color, glamour styling services, relaxing or therapeutic scalp treatments, brow designing and shaping, lash extensions, age-defying facials and laser hair removal. There's also a manicurist on hand to pass the time productively, or just in case you need a last-minute touch-up on your nails. Also value-added is the informative and friendly staff. Meghan, the woman who assisted David with my hair, offered a clear and detailed description of the products, and how they work. I am sure she would provide the same level of information to any interested client even though as a beauty writer, I am super-curious about everything. I think it's important to be an educated consumer, and know something about what is planned for your hair, and why, and how, and what is in the products the stylist uses--never be afraid to ask!

In Summary: Are In-Salon Treatments Worth It?
Yes!

I'm not exactly sure what David custom blended into my treatment, but it left my hair soft, smooth, super-shiny and swingy. A week later, my hair is still full of bounce and body, still shiny, still soft, and even though the weather has been horribly humid, it's still relatively non-frizzy. I felt as though I walked in with my usual, hard to manage hair, and walked out with someone else's great hair!

But what about trying to accomplish the same results at home? I really don't think so! Even if you can purchase these treatments in a beauty supply store, they are simply not going to work the same way in your hands as in the hands of experts. Beauty supply store color and treatments may be "pro-style," but it might not mean pro results for you. For staters, you can't be sure that the products you buy aren't outdated or bootleg, and they may not have been stored properly, or they might not even be the genuine product you think you are getting. Additionally, in-salon treatments are often more powerful (and more effective) than do-it-yourself products, but that can be a good or bad thing, depending upon how it's mixed and applied. Without an extra set of skilled hands, there's also no good way you can do that on your own (e.g. how are you going to get the products distributed evenly to the back of your head unless you have really long arms and are practically double-jointed?). The Redken products David used on me were excellent and they worked. And while in-salon treatment like these do cost more, having them applied to your hair with some consistency can help your hair look better --- actually improve it. The treatments last longer so they become a reasonably economical option. Walking out of a salon with hair that looks and feels great....? Priceless!

Clarins Most Dynamic Woman Award Honors Founders of Childhelp

Q: What made Kathy Lee Gifford tear up during a recent awards ceremony?

A: She held her hankie during a video clip featuring Childhelp, an organization created by Sara O'Meara and Yvonne Fedderson who were getting joint honors this year from Clarins -- The Most Dynamic Woman Award. The clip showed formerly abused children who were saved by Childhelp, and as we watched these children trying to work their way back into normalcy, just about all of us were moved, and a bit weepy.

The Clarins Most Dynamic Woman Award is given each year to women that have devoted themselves to bettering the lives of children (e.g. child abuse, illnesses and disabilities). CEO and Co-Founder Sara O’Meara and President and Co-Founder Yvonne Fedderson started Childhelp® in 1959 to help orphans of mixed heritage born and abandoned during the Second World War. Later on, under the urging of First Lady Nancy Reagan, the pair began focusing on child abuse, establishing Childhelp. The organization focuses on advocacy, prevention, treatment and community outreach for victims of child abuse and neglect, as well as at-risk children. The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline (1-800-4-A-CHILD) operates 24/7 and gets called from through the United States, Canada, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Guam. Childhelp also has residential treatment services; children’s advocacy centers; therapeutic foster care; group homes and child abuse prevention, education and training. A "National Day of Hope" is held each April during National Child Abuse Prevention Month, to focus awareness and support to fight child abuse.

The Clarins Most Dynamic Woman Award is not just an honor, with a lovely trophy, it comes with a grant of of $50000 (the past honorees also received a small grant to continue their good works), and the promise from Clarins that they will donate 100% of the profits from Clarins online sales of some of the company's most popular products, to the current honoree's cause.
This year it's sales of the popular Clarins Sun Protection products that consumers purchase online during the months of June, July and August.

Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Clarins Group,

Mr. Christian Courtin-Clarins & Kathy Lee Gifford.

The ceremony was held on the Apartment Terrace on the 24th floor of the Hudson Hotel. There was a light breeze and it was lovely outside, with a view of the Hudson River and all the way downtown. Before the official ceremony began, I asked Kathy Lee if she'd mind posing with Mr. Christian Courtin-Clarins, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Clarins Group. Both gamely complied. As I walked away I heard Mr. Courtin-Clarins say to Kathy Lee how honored he was to spend time with her. I'm paraphrasing a bit, but she wryly quipped that she was honored that anyone would want to spend time with a middle aged, menopausal woman! Of course, she was joking. She looked absolutely gorgeous (and who wouldn't want to spend time with Kathy Lee Gifford?)! I met Kathy Lee in person years ago at another charity function. People were rushing up to her table and grabbing at her arms. I felt so bad because they wouldn't even barely let her get a drink of water. It's true that stars tend to know how to handle being "mauled," but I remember very clearly how calm and gracious and friendly she was to everyone who approached her.

Mr. Courtin-Clarins dabbed at his eyes as he described how on a visit he made to one of Childhelp's residential centers for abused children, a young boy was scared of him simply because he was an adult. His sincerity and honesty was powerful, and again, we all felt ourselves in the moment! Then he introduced Sara O'Meara and Yvonne Fedderson, and they each made a little speech. “It’s because of the generosity and philanthropy of companies like Clarins that we are able to continue to grow our efforts to combat and treat child abuse and provide love and hope to many more children" said Sara. “It is an honor to receive this from a company that not only helps to make women beautiful on the outside, but on the inside as well, and one that supports children in need. The children we serve will benefit greatly from this donation," said Yvonne. Past honorees were attending and asked up to the front of the room, given bouquets of flowers, and also a small grant to continue their good works again this year. Andrea Jaeger, former pro tennis player and a hero to children with cancer, was last year's honoree, and she was obviously excited and surprised by the generous grant.

A Beautiful Side to The Ugly But Amazing Emu

I have never really liked being around large birds. I guess most everyone has some sort of aversion. But I've discovered something beautiful about the emu, a member of the ostrich family. The emu is a large, flightless bird that lives in Australia. It stands 5 to 6 ft tall and even on those it's frail-looking legs, it is a very fast runner. There is only one living species

The amazing emu looks like a walking haystack of feathers or a result of mother nature's bad day, but emus are prized for their low-fat meat, high-quality leather, and oil made from their refined fat. Emu oil that has been by the Australian aborigines for medicinal purposes for thousands of years.

Skin Glow Salt Scrub $19.95 5 fl. oz; $3.50 .60 fl. oz. by Tanzotic, a company known for indoor tanning products, features emu oil. It's an exfoliating, acne-fighting, tan-enhancing product I've just recently discovered. Today, most commercially-used emu is farmed., and Tanzotic's emu oil comes from a ranch in Walker county Texas. This simple jar of exfoliator also features dead sea salts to help slough of dull, dry, dead skin cells, while Sweet Almond Oil, Vitamin E, Sunflower, Rosemary Oil and Grape Seed Oil help moisturize and soften your skin.

Some exfoliators slide off your skin immediately, making it hard to handle, and leaving a mess in your shower. This product stayed on like a paste, so it was easy to effectively exfoliate. It also washed cleanly down the drain when I rinsed it off. That's a huge benefit, because if it stays put on your skin longer, you can use less, making it economical. As to the pleasure factor, I've never found exfoliating products to be that much fun to use on sensitive skin like mine, but this one was very soft, and theoretically smelled like "sunflowers." I guess I haven't smelled all that many sunflowers, but I thought the fragrance was just a non-identifiable, pleasantly light and floarl scent that I barely noticed (and that was just fine). Like most exfoliating products, this one not only exfoliates, it soothes and moisturizes (no need for most people to use another emollient after exfoliating with this product). This makes it a multi-tasking perfect partner to prime your skin for a self-tanner or smooth outdoor tan. The product also claims to reduce the appearance of acne if used for 7-10 days. I didn't test it for that purpose, but keeping your skin clear of dead skin couldn't' hurt. I did use it to shave my legs, as suggested, and was pleasantly surprised. This modestly-priced multi-tasker really did help -- my legs (and everywhere else I used it) were super-soft and silky.

How To Blow Dry Your Hair Like A Pro

If you're like me, you treasure visits to the salon because you leave with silky, sleek, shiny hair and just for that brief period of time, you feel wonderful! When you get home and shampoo your hair, however, reality sets in. The same hair that was compliant in your stylist's hand, rebells in your hands!

If you have a hard time re-creating that salon look you love, here are some "how-to" tips from Redken to blow dry your hair like a pro:
TOOLS YOU’LL NEED:

Wide-tooth comb to evenly disperse product and untangle hair

Round medium-sized boar bristle brush or nylon/boar bristle combination brush to help blow-dry sections.

Blow-dryer with an ionic feature to seal in the cuticle and lock in moisture for high sheen (not recommended for fine hair). Get one that has at least 2 heat settings: high heat for initial drying, low heat for finishing. Make sure your blow-dryer has sufficient voltage and a nozzle for a controlled, polished finish.

A flat iron creates a sleeker, smoother finish and keep ends from curling under. If you choose to use a flat iron after you blow-dry, use on hair after completely dried and make sure it has ceramic plates to diffuse heat with maximum results and less damage.

EASY STEPS FOR THE PERFECT BLOW-OUT:

1) Apply a blow-dry product, like Redken satinwear 02 blow-dry lotion (SRP $15.95) or straight 05 straightening balm (SRP $14.95) to hair and use a wide tooth comb to evenly disperse product.

− To add volume and substance to fine hair, try thickening lotion 06 body builder (SRP $ 12.95).
− For maximum lift at the roots, apply guts 10 volume spray foam ($14.95).
− For unruly hair, try align 12 ultra-straight balm (SRP $15.95).

2) Blast-dry hair on high heat until 80% dry, working from the scalp to the ends using fingers to disperse heat throughout the hair.

− For added volume at the roots, turn hair upside down while drying 80% using a boar’s head bristle brush.

3) Clip hair into 3 sections: 2 on the sides and 1 in the back.

4) Blow-dry each section one inch at a time using a thick, medium-sized boar bristle brush and low heat.

− Use the nozzle on your blow-dryer to keep the airflow pointed down the hair strand to prevent unwanted fly-aways that can be exacerbated from humidity.

5) For each section, start drying hair at the scalp and then move down to the mid-length of hair. When the mid-length is dry, finish the ends.

− For ultimate heat-styling protection, try spritzing Redken fabricate 03 heat-active texturizer (SRP $12.95) on each section to create texture and dimension with added heat protection.
− To avoid your arms from getting tired, make sure to keep both your elbows at shoulder level, and use your wrists and lower arm to move the brush and dryer. And if you need to, take a break in between sections.

6) To finish the look, touch up each section with a flat iron (for added heat protection, re-apply fabricate 03 heat-active texturizer on each section before flat iron use).

− For additional control and frizz-free shine on your night out on the town, finish with forceful 23 super strength finishing spray (SRP $14.95) to keep that blow-dried perfection all night long.

7) Before heading out, spritz on some vinyl glam 02 mega-shine spray (SRP $14.95) for instant gloss and a glam finish!

To add even more movement and bounce to this already sleek blow-out, “Roll two velcro rollers in the front two sections of your hair after your blow-dry is complete,” suggests Redken session stylist, Patricia Morales. “While the rollers are in place, apply your makeup. Then, let the rollers down and you’ll have beautiful waves with extra movement and lift in the front and you’re ready to go --- a trick I often do when styling Demi Moore’s hair.”

A polished blow-out can easily be done at home with the right tools and advice directly from the pros! But remember, practice makes perfect, and soon you will master the look in no time. Don’t be afraid to ask your local Redken stylist for additional tips and tricks as well!

Nail Myths, De-bunked Courtesy of Creative Nail Design

Creative Nail Design http://www.creativenaildesign.com/ has been featured on many of my Fashion Week Posts, as they are really the nail company of the runways.

CND was kind enough to share some Beauty “Lies” and Realities with me. These myths may surprise you!

1. Lie: “Eat gelatin to grow strong, healthy nails.”
Reality: There is no scientific evidence of any benefit to nails from eating gelatin.

2. Lie: “Never file ‘back and forth’ on the nail.”
Reality: Filing ‘back and forth’ is perfectly safe IF you are using a fine grit file (240 or higher).

3. Lie: “It is best to leave toe nails square to prevent in-grown toe-nails.”
Reality: Square corners create sharp spikes that are driven into the surrounding skin under the pressure of tight or pointed shoes. Always trim corners at a 45 degree angle and smooth nail into a rounded square.

4. Lie: “Remove enamel and all coatings from the nail periodically to ‘let them breathe’.”
Reality: Coatings – anything from a thin base and top coat to a nail enhancement coating – protect nails and help to prevent them from becoming dry and brittle.

5. Lie: “Acetone polish remover is bad for nails.”
Reality: Acetone-based removers are superior because they efficiently remove pigment from the nail, leaving no residue or stain. Non-acetone removers evaporate very slowly, leaving a gummy film behind.

6. Lie: “Square shaped nails are stronger than oval or almond shapes.”
Reality: Strength comes from the sidewalls of the nail. Always keep the sides parallel, where the pink meets the white, and then begin shaping near the extended edge.

7. Lie: “It is OK to cut off calluses.”
Reality: Smooth, do not remove calluses. Calluses protect the pressure points of the feet. You need them. Use a gradual process of exfoliation to smooth and polish callused and very dry areas of the foot.

8. Lie: “Wear only pale enamel shades on short nails.”
Reality: In fact, short nails can carry dark shades best because the darker color helps to give the illusion of a beautiful, classic, well groomed nail.

9. Lie: “Nail enhancements (tips and/or coatings) are bad for the natural nail.”
Reality: Today’s nail enhancement technology is light, thin, safe and protective. Coatings protect the natural nail from the rigors of everyday i
