I Can Do
It All, What Should I Choose?
Q:
I am
overwhelmed by possibilities! I just can't decide what career to choose
between acting, graphic design, journalism, and a few million other
things. I graduated about 6 months ago with a Bachelors in Literature,
and I am hoping to leave my non-rewarding and low-paying bank job as
soon as I can find something else (I picked graphic design for now). I
live at home. What advice do you have for someone who wants to do 50
things that EACH require full attention and training?
ALISON ANSWERS:
Aren't you lucky that you have so many
interests and so many talents? You have many options, but the difficult
thing you must do now is choose ONE
activity to start with! Learn the difference between which talents you'd
like to have as hobbies, and which ONE talent you're strongest in that
you'd like to do for a career.
In the workplace, having many
skills will make you a strong candidate, but only if you are clear to
employers which field you're really eager to pursue.
No one can do 50 things at once,
let alone do them all well. Find the one area where you not only excel,
but where it's likely you can get the types of jobs that you'll enjoy.
You have only been out
of school for 6 months and your career path is hardly set in stone
so..... R E L A X and enjoy the process of discovering who you really
are and what you want to do. You say you picked graphic design first.
Why not stick with it for as long as it satisfies you?
You're not "stuck"
with one field forever however.
Continue to pursue acting and writing and your other interests as
hobbies. If the design experience turns out to be a big drag, you'll
already have some practical experience with the other fields that you
are interested in.
