Winter Skin Solutions:

The Advice Sisters reviewed the award-winning  by Elizabeth Arden in our May/June 2009 What Works column.  But now, there's Prevage Day Ultra Protection Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 30 PA++ ** $125.00 1 fl. oz. These anti-aging weapons come in silvery pump bottles that remind me of bullets--magic ones, because they both have  Idebenone, a powerful antioxidant that helps combat the signs of aging. Idebenone is often compared to other anti-aging powerhouses like alpha lipoic acid, kinetin, vitamin C, vitamin E, and coenzyme Q10. But Idebenone has the highest rating of the six top antioxidants.  Prevage Day Ultra Protection Anti-aging Moisturizer SPF 30 also has Thiotaine, an antioxidant that "compliments" Idebenone in protecting your skin from environmental aggressors. And Prevage Day Ultra Protection Anti-aging Moisturizer SPF 30 doesn't just have amazing moisturization and anti-aging ingredients, it also features a broad spectrum, SPF protection to help you defend against damaging UVA and UVB rays. While Prevage can't return your mature skin to that of a teenager, it is one of the best options men and women have if they don't want to invest in more radical and invasive methods to look younger. These products are well regarded by dermatologists and aestheticians, and there is a 2-month return policy on the product, which shows that Elizabeth Arden believes in, and stands by, it's products.

Last night I had a dream that my legs were itching!  But when I awoke, I realized that it wasn't a dream.  I have sensitive skin and a lotion I applied in the evening apparently irritated my legs while I slept!  Even those with sensitive skin need to give it moisture.  You don't have to spend a fortune on special creams for your delicate skin. I have discovered a product that everyone can afford, and that makes skin silky in seconds without any fear of irritation:   Jergens® Sensitive Skin Relief Fragrance Free Daily Moisturizer $5.99 16.8 fl. oz.  It may not come in a fancy jar, but the plastic pump bottle dispenses a good product that really works well.  What's the point of having a gorgeous cream or lotion if it makes your skin red and itchy? Jergens® Sensitive Skin Relief Fragrance Free Daily Moisturizer offers the moisture and soothing relief your skin needs in a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, dermatologist-tested formula that (here's good news) can instantly soothe and protect dry, sensitive skin for 36 hours. It's formulated with ultra-hydrating glycerin, and it's a quickly absorbing lotion that doesn't have dye or irritating ingredients. Even better,  the huge,  pump bottle costs less than a sandwich to soothe and pamper your skin for months!

You have to have real confidence in your product, to name it; "Gone in Sixty Seconds," put it into a lipstick-sized tube, and then price it at an awesome $19.99! Wow! But that's just what AminoGenesis has done. Their brand new product is an instant wrinkle filler featuring "InstaFirm Protein," with a cocktail of oxygenating peptides, micro-collagen and firming proteins that tighten, firm and reduce puffiness all day long. The company's advanced patented technology dispenses the product to your skin on a timed release, all day long. The product is applied via a squeeze tube with three little roller balls on the top, to help you distribute and massage the product into your skin. *is this product right for you? We have recently been introduced to Vapour Organic Beauty, a new prestige beauty company featuring products with a signature, therapeutic base of certified organic, light, dry plant oils that are non-comedogenic. To the base, Vapour ads specific, organic, botanical infusions that offer deep moisture and anti-oxidant protection.  Vapour has a line of color cosmetics that I didn't try, but I did try two anti-aging treatments:  Vapour Stratus Instant Skin Perfector $44.00 .53 fl. oz. and Lux Lip Conditioner $16.00.  There are several things I really like about the Skin Perfector. For starters, it arrives in a chunky, swivel up stick as a solid, so there's no mess and you can take it with you anywhere.  There's a light, slightly lemony scent, and the anti-aging, light-reflecting, anti-oxidant packed stick helps to reduce the look of fine lines, while smoothing out the skin, and hydrating it. The stick is infused with face-specific, nourishing botanicals including anti-inflammatory Frankincense, anti-oxidant Tulsi and moisturizing lotus flowers.  It just feels so good on bare skin, and you can use it under foundation, too.  The Lux Lip Conditioner also comes in a slim, swivel up stick. It's a silky solid with a light, citrus-y scent and a very hydrating botanical blend of lemon balm, myrrh and green tea, plus anti-microbial Iceland moss. For those who believe this is very important, the product is 100% natural and chemical free with 95% certified organic ingredients. If your lips are parched, cracked, or just dull, this little stick will magically make them look nourished and soft, fast. Guys can use it too. We  hope to review more Vapour in the future. We're impressed?

By now, you all know that I'm completely besotted with  absolutely everything (and I mean, everything) that Lisa Hoffman Beauty has produced. Lisa Hoffman isn't just a lovely woman and wife of a superstar, she's a highly intelligent and successful entrepreneur (and, at least occasionally, she answers her own emails instead of letting the pr folks do it).  Her products are of the highest quality, and they perform like superstars, should. I haven't reviewed everything in her lines, but nearly. For Winter, a good cleanser can help, or harm your skincare routine, so that's what I'm focusing on here. Lisa's cleansers (mostly for normal to dry skin), for example don't just get rid of sweat, dirt and makeup, they make your skin feel like it has a fighting chance in a world of pollution and stress.  The Day Cleanser $17.95 4.25 oz.  comes in a nice, pearly, metal pump that is sealed, so no air or pollutants can get in and taint it.  The cleanser has a very light scent (sadly, less than some of the other Lisa Hoffman products, because I love her fragrances) but it calms an conditions as well as cleanses, giving skin moisture as well as a renewed feeling. There's a Night Cleanser too $19.95 4.25 fl. oz. This creamy, sulfate-free cleanser gets rid of makeup without having to scrub, and without stripping and drying your skin. It's rich in Vitamins E, K, and phenols,  to neutralize free radicals and moisturize. These cleansers work well and are a little something nice you can do for yourself, without going overboard on the price. You'll feel pampered and during the Winter months, your skin really needs that additional "TLC." More pricey, but probably worth it, is the fabulous, Lisa Hoffman Vitamin A & E Serum $95.00 1 fl. oz.  This precious product also arrives in a sleek, sealed pump bottle. Inside, a gel/serum offers a long drink of nourishment for skin, leaving skin looking hydrated and healthy, while it reduces the appearance of fine lines. According to Lisa Hoffman herself, this is the most popular product in all of the lines.  Her Clinical Testing results show that after 30 days, 79.3% of participants reported a lessening of deep lines and wrinkles and 82.76% of participants noticed an improvement in skin texture. he products encourages the production of collagen (the key to more youthful skin) and key ingredients include Grape Fruit Peel Oil (help  to detoxify skin and tone it), and Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (evens skin tone and helps to diminish fine lines and wrinkles).  Now, I know it's not a scientific study, but I've been using a little bit of this serum at least once a day, and people have been commenting (without being prompted) on how great my skin is. I haven't changed anything else, so I'm guessing this serum, is successful in making my skin look better. If you want to have better looking skin this season, give it a try!

The philosophy of Kate Somerville skin care is based on a Skin Health Pyramid, with five fundamental elements for beautiful skin: Protect, Hydrate, Feed Stimulate and Detox. I love HydraKate Line Release Face Serum $150.00 1 fl. oz.  by Kate Somerville. This lightweight serum in a slim, silver pump bottle smells a bit citrus-y and feels feather-light on your skin. But it begins to tingle, and after a few minutes it did look like my "expression lines" were softer. A blend of peptides and collagen builders help to improve skin texture and tone, while "HSC Complex " helps counter the loss of lipids from skin (from washing, stress, environment or excessive UV exposure).  Plumping comes from Hyaluronic Acid  that helps hold water in the skin’s surface , while something called "Leuphasyl®" reduces the depth of expression wrinkles.  The online information says that this product is "a safer alternative to Botulinum Toxin." I have had Botox, and I am always wary to agree that anything works as well as a surgical facelift or injections, but it does soften small lines a bit and it made my skin kitten-soft and lovely.  So, whether you feel like you've had a non-invasive treatment to reduce lines and wrinkles, or not, the product makes a definite improvement. If you've got the coin, go for it!

The sky's the limit on the cost of cutting edge skin products these days. Sometimes, however, you get what you pay for and the dividends are wonderful. One new product worthy of your consideration is Erno Laszlo's new firming face cream, Laszlo Blue Firmarine SPF 30 $195.00 1.7 fl. oz.  What's in this precious, new cream? For starters, it comes in a rather stunning, clear aquamarine blue square cute, with a square, shiny silver top that looks like a modernist piece of art. But, inside, is a rich cream that has as it's star ingredient, Spirulina Maxima. This is a sustainable fresh water micro-algae that contains over 70 essential vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants. Spirulina in various forms has been used as a health supplement for all sorts of ailments, and even for weight loss and herpes. For example, Spirulina has the highest concentration of evercetin found in a natural source. Evercetin is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that can be used to alleviate the symptoms of sinusitis and asthma. Phycocyanin, the protein that gives spirulina its blue color, has also been shown to relieve inflammation associated with arthritis and various allergies. But the point of this cream is to hydrate and firm. It does that, beautifully. You can feel your skin gently tightening up a bit after just a few minutes, and your skin will look soft and healthy.  The cream also has a nice, SPF 30 (thanks to Octinoxate, Octisalate, and Avobenzone), which makes it a suitable substitute for sun screen on a daily basis. The cream was created for people with slightly dry to slightly oily skin, so it's good for a majority of people. Only you can decide if a cream is worth the price, be it $20, or $200.00,but on a personal note, the results on my skin?  Priceless!.  I'm guessing that your favorite Erno Lazlo counter will have samples. Visit soon!

Clinique Even Better Skin Tone Correcting Moisturizer with SPF 20 $42.50 helps to reduce and perhaps, eliminate dark spots. I am always worried when a product claims that it can erase past skin damage. Perhaps it can, depending upon the situation. But I didn’t try enough of the Even Better Skin Tone Correcting Moisturizer to affirm that dark spots would just disappear by using this peach-tinted cream. That being said, this is a very nice moisturizing product with a high enough SPF to warrant everyday use. It is rich and hydrating, with patent-pending ingredients that really could help to reduce some dark spot damage, and to prevent and protect skin from future discoloration on all types of skin. Advanced, photostable, broad spectrum 3:1 UVA/UVA protection plus moisturization and ingredients known to address dark spots on skin, work together to break down and scatter dark spots and assist in whisking away melanin "dust" with an exfoliating action. Sun blocks Octocrylene, Avobenzone, and Octisalate work together to protect skin from the harmful effects of the sun. There’s a Skin Tone Corrector that you can buy that apparently boosts the effects of both products. Dark spots are not easy to treat on your own, so if this is a problem your skin has, you can either go to a dermatologist, or, give these Clinique products a try, first. Clinique’s 100% fragrance free, oil free, and non-acnegenic products are always a good bet. And, If you’re looking for a new,  multi-tasking moisturizer that can also improve the look and feel of your skin, this one works for almost all skin types and is worthy of your consideration.

Cosmedicine, new to our reviews,  was developed by Klinger Advanced Aesthetics and Sephora. Even the illustrious institution, Johns Hopkins,  was involved in "testing" during different stages of creation and testing. We tried a couple of products, and found them to be effective, although not bargain basement in price. We tried two products for oily skin:  Medi-Matte Oil Control Lotion SPF 20 $45.00 1.35 fl. oz., and Healthy Cleanse for Oily Skin $35.00 5 fl. oz.  The Healthy Cleanse For Oily Skin comes in a clear, plastic, pump bottle. It is a multi-tasking cleanser/toner/makeup remover.  The lightly foaming cleanser gets rid of excess oil, dirt, dead skin cells and bacteria. It also does a good job of removing even tough, waterproof makeup, without stripping your skin and making it irritated. It also helps to reduce the production of excess sebum and you can use it for sensitive skin. The product is a bit pricey, but if you suffer from over-active oil glands, this is a great way to start, or end, your day. Medi-Matte Oil Control Lotion SPF 20 is a thick cream in a tube  (use just a little and smooth it into your face until it disappears) that isn't just a mattifying lotion with antioxidants. It also has an impressive broad spectrum, UVA/UVB, SPF 20 sunscreen, so you don't need to add even more products to oil-challenged skin. . If your skin breaks out in oily shine seemingly right after you've cleansed it, this product will help keep it from being shiny (up to 8 hours), and also reduces the potential for breakouts by eliminating excess oil and clogged pores. Even people with sensitive skin can use it. Use the cleanser and the mattifier together, and keep oil, at bay.

LUSH Cosmetics calls it's Facial Moisturizer, "Celestial" $32.95 1.5 fl. oz. and it is really easy to see why:  the smell really is heavenly. It's a mix of vanilla, almond milk, and dove orchid that immediately reminded me of the rich, delicious, egg creams I used to get at lunch counters, when I was younger. Inside the black, plastic jar, is a very loose, white moisturizer that caters to super-sensitive skin that reacts to everything.  I have that kind of skin (a bad break for a beauty reviewer) but while I used to avoid moisturizers, it is foolhardy not to take care of your skin and give it what it needs, especially during the Winter months. This moisturizer has calming and soothing ingredients that let even those with sensitive skin, moisturize without aggravation. Some of the ingredients include cocoa butter and glycerine, plus vanilla water and almond milk to gently moisturize and soften the skin. The fresh dove orchid extract is included, because it traditionally is used in Chinese herbalism to reduce inflammation. Even if your skin is not sensitive, this moisturizer feels so good and smells so go, you'll be in 7th heaven when you choose it, and use it!  This is an affordable, lovely product...a must have as a Winter pick me up for everyone, a must-have for anyone with sensitive skin, year-round.

Nicholas Perricone, M.D., FACN, is a board certified clinical and research dermatologist who has been christened “Father of the Inflammation Theory of Aging”. Dr.. Perricone believes that: "Wrinkled, sagging skin is not the inevitable result of growing older. It is a disease and you can fight it.” This statement should excite and give hope to everyone who wants to stay younger, longer. Perricone MD – Advanced Eye Area Therapy  $95.00 .5 fl. oz. is a precious, amber glass vial with pump top, that dispenses what some might say is "youth serum" for the under-eye area (an area that often shows age, easily and first).  This product has Alpha Lipoic Acid (to reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles and large pores) and DMAE to help firm the look of your skin. Vitamin C Ester also brightens the skin's appearance.  We didn't test it for the 8 weeks the company apparently tested this for, but we do know that under-eye enhancement doesn't come easily, or cheap.  According to the box, 90% of those who used it for the 8 weeks showed reduced under eye discoloration (there wasn't a way to tell how much discoloration was there to begin with, versus how much under eye discoloration was lightened), but  84% of testers saw an improvement in under eye moisture after just three hours after application. That is something we did test. This product goes on cool and creamy, and with a bit of a tingle. What we found was that this often dry, under-eye area, was better hydrated without any breakouts or greasiness. Everyone's skin is different and reacts differently to products, so we can't encourage you to just go and plunk down close to $100.00 without thinking about your own skin and it's limits. But, based on what we can see, if you did use this product morning and evening, as directed, for 8 weeks, you might run out it quickly, but you might also get the results you had hoped for. Like any pricey skincare, think about it, ask for samples if you can get them, and then go for it!

Starting over, by Origins,  uses Argan Leaf and Green Algae, working with Mimosa Tree Bark to help rebuild natural collagen and prevent against Glycation.  What's "glycation?"  Excess sugar in skin and environmental concerns fuel the destructive process of Glycation which causes strong collagen to “ball up” and collapse resulting in lines, wrinkles and tone and texture damage.  But, apparently, the bark of the Mimosa Tree is a powerful natural collagen booster. That's not all that that Starting over packs into a little, glass jar (read the rest of the review on the Advice Sisters Blog).  Origins is known for natural, effective skin care products, but in studies performed with real women, age-erasing moisturizers provided both immediate and long term results. In less than 1 day, Origins claims that their unique line-leveling formula will begin to amplify the natural production of collagen. In their studies, after one month, 100% of panelists saw a clinically significant improvement in skin tone. 96% felt the product left skin with a smoother texture; 92% felt the product left skin with a healthier appearance; 87% felt the product left skin brighter, more radiant; and 81% felt the product improved skin’s elasticity. After two months, 94% of the women studies saw what Origins calls a "clinically significant improvement" in the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Jojoba beads and a fruit acid complex, plus royal jelly, makes for a natural and luxe product.  Royal Jelly is superbly nourishing, made of nectar, pollen, flower parts, vitamins, minerals, bee hormones and other natural ingredients. You might think you'll be spending a lot of money, but not if it's Radiance by Burts Bees $9.99 6 fl. oz. This light cleanser in a plastic pump bottle makes me feel so pampered, and yet, it is just It has alight clean fresh scent. This light lotion cleanser removes dirt, oil and make-up. You will be amazed at how nice your skin looks and feels. The light fruit acids help keep your skin looking smooth and radiant thanks to a gentle plant-based cleansing complex plus jojoba beads and a fruit acid complex. This is a no-brainer to use, and to love!

Natural beauty products are hot. One company that produces a wide variety of products for a wide variety of skin types, is G.M. Collin. The company was founded in France in 1957 and employs technology with a nod towards nature. They've taken the natural approach forward, with  Bio Organique. This newest skin care line features 99% Natural & Certified Organic Ingredients, perfect for people who feel their bodies, and their environment, need to be "respected." All natural and/ or organic doesn't mean the products are less effective than other products.! I love the Cleansing Milk $34.00. That may be more than what you'd pay for a drugstore cleanser, but it's not out of the ballpark for "green" products. It arrives in a pristine, tapered white plastic bottle with fresh, green accents, and a pump top. I love that! The cleansing milk (and most of the other products in this review) are best for normal to dry skin. G.M. Collin has plenty of other products for other skin types. The key, active ingredients in this product are Avocado, to nourish and protect your skin with Omega 3, 6 & 9 that also help reduce water loss that can dry out your skin. I also love the lavender, that gently purifies, and reduces skin redness, while the light scent calms and relaxes you. Cleansing milks tend to be very mild and soothing, and this one is no different, but still thoroughly cleanses your skin. It will even remove (most) makeup so you don't have to use another product as well, or rub and scrub to get the really stubborn products, off your face. *there are more G.M. Collin Bio Organique products reviewed on the Advice Sisters Blog, please read!

Winter Skin Solutions _ Bath & Body:

Tela Body Butter $25.00 5 oz. is a jar of heavy duty skin bliss for parched, dry, itchy, scaly, skin.  The product is so thick, I almost thought it was solid when I originally looked into the jar. But it's a super-dense and creamy, USDA Certified 100 percent organic moisturize creme that uses  intomicro-emulsion technology to help reveal radiant, healthy looking skin. Cupuacu butter moisturizes, while argan oil deeply moisturizes and protects skin with its powerful antioxidant properties. I loved the rich, brightly herbal scent.  Although the cream does not absorb very quickly, if you have seriously dry skin, you need something that will stick around. This one does that job, very well.  And, it's luxurious enough to be sold in Barneys!

At the Spa Magazine event last Fall, I mentioned how much I was hoping to find a great body moisturizer to deal with the itchy, flaky, scaly issues of Winter-weary skin.  I was immediately presented with Kate Somerville Goat Milk Body Lotion $32.00  5 oz. This product comes in a squat pump bottle with large pump top. Inside, there's a silky lotion full of vitamins, minerals & proteins, and of course, goat milk. Studies have shown that this ingredient is prized for its restorative & healing properties. It contains naturally occurring enzymes that work to (gently) exfoliate skin, leaving it healthier & smoother and hydrated .FYI: lactose exfoliates & helps speed cellular turnover and goat milk has a very close pH to our own skin so it's non irritating, too.  The product takes a moment to absorb fully, but it rids skin of all those Winter woes! The product also includes witch hazel, a natural antiseptic, and organic aloe, that calms & conditions skin.  Reviewers said that the scent smelled like "warm beer" and 'McSorleys" bar top. To me, the scent was, well, a bit like goat milk, but certainly not unpleasant.

Is $27.00 too much to spend for a seriously good Hand & Body moisturizer? We don't think so, especially if it is Philip B Lovin; Hand & Body Creme 6 fl. oz.   I don't think I've ever tried a product from this line of skin and hair care that I didn't like. The simple, clear & black flip top tube holds one of the silkiest, moisturizing, creams I can find, with a nurturing, super-moisturizing blend of fruit and plant extracts that includes: coconut oil, shea butter and Vitamins E and B5. I love the fresh, clean scent that makes you feel like you've done just a little something extra for your hard working hands and body.  The product is really rich, but it won't leave an oil slick on your hands. It absorbs fast, does it's work, and lets you go on with your day. Speaking of which, you can use it once a day, but you might find that you want to squeeze just a little bit more, mid-day, or evening, because it feels so good.  If you really love it a lot (and it is a bit addictive), there's a 32 fl. oz size for $90.00!

A facial peel is one of the only ways you can remove the surface layer of dead, dull, skin cells, and reveal newer, brighter, smoother skin underneath. Strong peels must be done by a skilled professional, and do-it-yourself peels can be ineffective if you are too gentle, disastrous if you work it too hard or long. Dr Dennis Gross has created a DIY facial peel called the Alpha Beta Daily Peel; $78.00/30 applications; $28.00 10/applicationsl by md Skincare is gentle enough to on a daily basis. It diminishes the appearance of wrinkles and improves the look and texture of your skin. It can also help to reduce complexion problems, manage oil production, tone skin, and increase skin clarity. The two step process has a jar of Alpha Beta® Daily Face Peel Step One and the second jar has the Alpha Beta® Daily Face Peel Step two. The first jar has pads that refine and exfoliate, the second step neutralizes the more than 5 different acids in the first step. Something gentle enough for everyday use gives you gradual results, not the immediate and dramatic results you’d get with a more invasive peel. However you won’t get any serious damage from it either  The pads have a precise blend of alpha and beta hydroxy acids, antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E, soothing green tea extract, and an oil-free moisturizer. No need to scrub or rub, potentially causing damage and infection. I can't speak to the effectiveness as an acne fighter. If you have serious acne or other skin problems, an at-home treatment may not give you the results you need. But this Alpha Beta Daily Peel is a safe way to get gentle skin exfoliation that will make your complexion look better.  For anti-aging and general skin health, however, it's a great find

Depth Hand & Body Lotion $9.99 8.5 fl. oz. is not only new to our reviews, but it employs the nurturing powder of sea botanicals to help moisturize, soothe and nourish even the most distressed, Winter skin. The lotion really isn't a lotion at all, but more, a light, immediately absorbed, clear gel formula. All of the Depth products arrive in attractive, marine blue plastic bottles with sea-green caps, in a variety of shapes and sizes, depending upon the product inside. The bottles are made form 50% post consumer waste and are recyclable. The Depth Hand & Body Lotion is in a teardrop shaped pump bottle.  It's  70% certified organic, and 100% vegan. It is also hypo-allergenic, and free of parabens, phthalates, SLS and Synthetics. plus the product is fragrance-free. That's not to say it doesn't  smell good, because it does!  But instead of chemical scents, the various blends have 100% natural aroma blends that are distilled from a range of botanicals. The Hand & Body Lotion comes in four scents: bay coconut, sea berry, and the two I tried: Ocean Blossom (smells like Hawaiian Plumeria) and Mangrove Citrus. The scent is clean and light, and just a bit lemony, thanks to Italian Bergamot. The product hydrates quickly, and nicely,. Even better, Depth partners with Camp SEA LAB, a non-profit organization that provides authentic marine experiences for children who otherwise might not have the opportunity. I tried the Body Wash $9.99 12 fl. oz. too, in a delicious, bay Coconut that's more like cream of coconut mixed with tropical fruit, than sun tan sweet. I love the smell, and the nicely lathering cleanser that comes in a teardrop-shaped pump bottle and features nurturing, certified organic aloe as it's second ingredient, along with sea whip and sea palm and other marine ingredients. You can't beat the price, and the spa-style bath and body experience that costs just a modest amount.  TIP:  This line has A Refresh Daily Shampoo , and a lightweight Immerse Conditioner $9.99/each 10 fl. oz, and men's products (see Winter Skin Solutions Just For the Guys in the RH column).

Curél® Itch Defense™ Skin Balancing Lotion $7.49 3 fl. oz. is a great, new way to banish dry, scaly, itchy, skin. It is so gentle, even children and those with skin conditions or sensitive skin, can use it. I love the unscented lotion that immediately (and I mean, as soon as you smooth it on) will stop the itching and flakiness, and battle dryness without fuss or bother. Inexpensive doesn't mean ineffective. This is the product I'm reaching for, more and more, this Winter. Even a drugstore favorite can be "high-tech." This product has natural Ceramides that help to regulate the skin's ability to hold moisture by enhancing its protective layer. It rebalances PH to a healthy level and also boosts moisturization to leave skin feeling protected. Finally, it smoothes skin surface to minimize dryness and flaking, and encourages cellular turnover.  Curél® Itch Defense™ Skin Balancing Lotion is the beneficiary of 56,000 total lab hours; 100 studies conducted with 851 women and children; and 50 ingredients screened for safety by Allergists, Dermatologists and Toxicologists. The resulting formula was so safe, it was awarded the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance™. Why itch and suffer with dry flaky skin? Visit your favorite drugstore or mass market retailer and treat yourself. For less than the cost of lunch you can be itch-free, with smooth, sexy skin, all Winter long!

Winter Tools, Helpers & Fashion Accessories:

As adorable as pets are, they also leave a little gift for you everywhere they go...-pet hair. ..And, (how can I say this politely), dogs and cats have a nasty habit of vomiting food and hair, too, usually on your favorite couch or rug. It's even worse when they "gift" your suit or silk blouse! I have been a cat lover (and fur "mom") for decades, so I know. If you have a cat or dog that sheds a lot, or if you have more than one furry friend in your house, you're going to have pet hair, everywhere. Luckily, Bissell has some tools to help your handle these issues. The Bissell Universal Pet Hair Vacuum Tools srp. $29.99 arrives in a boxed set, with two essential items you can attach to any existing vacuum: a Pet Contour Tool® featuring a pink, rubberized top with little "fingers" that bend and flex to reach where hair collects (e.g. in crevices) so it's perfect for upholstery, stairs and car interiors, and a 6” wide Pet Turbobrush® that has rotating brushes with rubber fingers that works amazingly well on rugs, chairs, beds and sofas. I can't speak for dogs (I'm truly a cat person 100%) but I haven't ever met a cat that didn't like to vomit on the thing you prize the most, especially if it's white or ivory. Bissell Cat Stain and Odor Removers in spray pump bottles (there are also formulas just for dogs) can help.  Please read a comprehensive review on the Advice Sisters Blog.

Back in the Fall of 2008, I was introduced to a unique alternative to a sweater, cape or wrap, called "The Shōul" by Casual Essentials. It's a soft, lightweight hybrid of a wrap and a cape, that keeps away the chill, without looking dowdy. The original one I reviewed felt like soft cashmere, but it was actually a lightweight, washable acrylic knit. Now there's a cashmere blend version that's 5% cashmere, 50% Vicose and 45% nylon. Both versions are soft and lightweight, with a ribbed panel featuring vertical lines around the lower edge for eye appeal. I didn't think there was a way to improve on the soft and comfortable acrylic version, but I love the even softer, cashmere blend one. It feels silky soft on skin, and is appropriate even over a dressy, holiday gown. See more photos are read more about  "The Shōul" on the Advice Sisters Blog

Once you've dealt with your pets, there is still the matter of wrinkles on your clothes. Rowenta's two newest wrinkles wrestlers, the Rowenta Steamium, $175.00: and the Rowenta Pro Master Iron, $125.00 are made for pros, but you can get them for home use.  I tried the  Rowenta Steamium iron,  touted as: "the most powerful iron on the market." It's not an idle claim. The Steamium is the Escalade of irons. It's flashy and impressive, and it's BIG. It's also take more effort to lift than an ordinary iron, but that additional heft makes make ironing faster and more efficient. I also noticed that instead of a little water reservoir, this Rowenta iron has a more generously sized one. That's nice, because most of the water in a regular iron is used up within a short period of time, and you have to stop mid-task, and refill it. The Steamium also has a new, "Steam Force" built in pump injection system that combines steam and power to deliver 30% more steam on all types of fabrics (you can use a trigger spray, or coax out stubborn wrinkles with a power-shot of steam). This eye-catching iron has a raised back and a pointed, streamlined front. Large buttons and a light up display to show what fabric type has been chosen, makes it easy to select the right settings (one you do the steam and temperature adjusts automatically to compliment that setting). The iron handle is padded and rubberized for a secure and comfortable grip. There is an auto shutoff for safety, and a self cleaning system. When you're ironing resistant wrinkles (like those pants I mentioned earlier), you will get nearly dry-cleaner pressing results with a little attention to detail. These days, we're doing more hand washing instead of dry cleaning. The Rowenta Steamium iron will make the final step, pressing, much better. There might be an initial investment for an "iron upgrade," but with a little care, your new iron will be paying dividends, for years.

Are you in a Yelo Mod? You are, if you are wearing a YeloMod piece of clothing, by SunSoul. SunSoul’s unique, high-tech, fluorescent material is the first of its kind to selectively amplify narrow bands of healthy light from the sun and deliver them to the skin while blocking the harmful ultraviolet rays. SunSoul is a Toronto-based company, made up of a team of globally recognized scientists and dermatology specialists, aiming to be a market leader in light technology to treat medical and cosmetic conditions of the skin. The products from SunSoul are skincare you wear. Yes, you read that correctly! This is a very unique collection of clothing that is actually, a way to protect your skin, with a UPF 50. In addition, the yellow light promotes skin rejuvenation by smoothing skin, improving skin tone and reducing wrinkles or skin discoloration due to aging or sun damage. Only a few hours a week in the sun, wearing yelomod is supposed to provide enough yellow light to rejuvenate the skin. I have to say that my skin isn't all that damaged, so I didn't see a huge difference, but I love the concept, and even more importantly, the UPF 50 is great alternative to traditional methods of sun protection. For that alone, I've become a fan. Whether you're wearing YeloMod on the slopes, or just walking around in the mid-day sun, this SunSoul clothing can do good things for your skin and your health, protecting your skin against the damaging rays of the sun without having to slather on sunblock, and you'll look good, too. I have fallen in love...with an electric toothbrush!  Pulsonic, Oral-B's slimmest and lightest sonic toothbrush, ever! The model I tried was a Rechargeable Power Toothbrush "kit" that includes a handle, a charging station, a small, Precision Tip Brush Head, and the full sized, Oral-B Pulsonic Brush Head. The battery can last up to two weeks on one charge so you can take it with you without the charging unit, if you're going away for a long weekend, and the battery has no cadmium, lead or mercury, so it's better for the environment, too. Weighing in at just one pound, the toothbrush feels light as a feather, in your hand. And, the slim base and toothbrush shape takes up less space on your bathroom counter (the toothbrush itself fits into a normal toothbrush holder so you can put the base away if you're not charging the brush all that often. It is quiet and easy to use, and it's also powerful, effectively whitening teeth by reducing up to 94% of surface stains in 2 weeks. That would be thanks to more than 27,000 vibrations per minute, and a specially-designed Pulsonic brush head that contours to the teeth to provide an effective clean. The brush head tickles your gums like the powerful brushes at the dentist's office (I quickly got used to it). You also get a small, thin, precision tip brush head that is designed to help remove plaque and stains between teeth. Additional features include a clean mode, and a sensitive mode. The "Clean” mode provides an effective cleaning for your teeth, while the "Sensitive" mode is designed to cleanse your tongue, and other sensitive areas. The toothbrush pauses, briefly, every thirty seconds to remind you to move it to another one of the four quadrants of your mouth, and a two-minute timer indicates when the ideal, over all brushing time has been reached. *you have to read more about this great "beauty tool" on the Advice Sisters Blog.

What's pink, warms up, and helps you looks beautiful? The Pink heated Eyelash Curler $16.00 by Japonesque. I love the look of curled lashes, but I dislike the large, metal eyelash curlers that are bulky, and squeeze your lashes into submission. The Japonesque version is as slim as a lip gloss, and it's light enough to take anywhere for touch-ups. It is battery powered with one AAA battery and heats up. Even better, this lash curler has a comb (not a vice) that you simply place under your lashes and "comb" them up. The heat (it's warm, not searingly hot) magically straightens out any kinked lashes and curls the entire lashline in seconds. This is one of those "little wonders" that you'll wonder how you ever did without. Your lucky recipient will thank you for years to come! If "Santa" doesn't bring you one of these in your stocking, buy your own.

Have your stilettos worn out their welcome? A new company called Fit In Clouds  $18.95 to $24.95 provides an easy solution: portable flats that fold into a velvety pouch. The pouch, with the flats inside, is about the size of a small video camera or two iPods. Tuck these into your purse and carry these feet savers with you for when you can't take any more standing in stilettos, or just because...they're cute! Fit in Clouds are available in a variety of colors and fabrics, and in sizes small, medium and large. These flats have a smooth, cool lining and are elasticized all around to accommodate swollen feet. If you're dancing, they'll grip the floor so you don't slip. This is inexpensive footwear but nicely crafted. my favorite is "Ocean Blue, " ballet flats in blue satin with two rows of faceted, sparkling "stones" on the front. There are white satin varieties that are perfect for brides. And, you can get classic black, and unadorned styles, too. I just love a bit of "bling" for the holidays and evenings and parties (the time when most women are wearing high heels longer than normal). These flats are pretty flashy and fabulous, don't you think?

Recently I tried an interesting,Check Spelling new, aromatherapy product from G2 Organics called Breath of Fresh Air $24.00.  It's a natural aromatherapy treatment for allergy, cold, and flu sufferers. The product is fairly simple: a gathering of seven essential oils, and natural herbs, in an attractive, well-sealed, clear jar so you can see the herbs inside. There is a small seashell inside the jar that is not just for decoration. If you want to carry the scent with you, but don't want to carry loose herbs, just tuck the shell into pocket or purse! You open it and...inhale! As I opened the jar, and inhaled. I felt instantly more alert,  and the fresh herbal scent did help me open my sinuses. I am less certain about how this product claims to kill airborne pathogens (Bacteria, Viruses), thereby reducing secondary infections. But if you take a moment to uncap and inhale as needed or use in a steam treatment for severe sinusitis, whether it is curative or not, you will feel better. In the end, that's the best reason to buy it. The product is also good for dealing with minor headaches, too.  You don't have to feel bad or have a headache to enjoy this product. Keep one nearby and open it now and then just to clear your head (don't' leave the jar open for more than 20 minutes at a time to keep it lasting, longer).

The last time I opened my makeup case and looked at my travel toothbrush, the bristles were a disgusting, yellow-ish brown. Although I cleaned and dried the brush well before I put it away, apparently germs and/or mold still made a home on my brush! It was really gross, and, of course, there was no way I was going to put that toothbrush back into my mouth! I had to run out at the last minute, and buy another one. Not long after this travel toothbrush incident, I discovered the Violight Personal/Travel Toothbrush Sanitizer (Item VIO200)  $29.99;  the Violight Zapi Toothbrush Sanitizer $29.95 (There's a four-toothbrush model for $49.95), and even cute, kid's versions (Zapi Doodle) . The Violight Travel Toothbrush Sanitizer is a slim-line, battery operated, toothbrush case in silver and clear plastic that fits neatly into a suitcase or tote. In just six minutes, it will sanitize manual toothbrushes, and most electric heads, The Zapi Doodle comes with a sheet of stickers, so like the classic Mr. Potato Head, kids can make their Zapi, their own. It's fun to use, so even kids may feel more inclined to brush, and sanitize their toothbrushes, afterwards. You can use Zapi with manual or electric toothbrushes...you even get a free toothbrush with the unit! The blinking light tells you it's working, with an auto shut-off in 6-7 minutes (Depending upon the unit) so you don't have to stick around. A remove-able drip tray keeps things super-sanitary.  The Winter cold and flu season is here.  If you want to minimize your risk of getting sick this season, wash your hands regularly, and sanitize your toothbrush. It is so easy and effective, it's a no brainer! If you live in a house with other people, especially with children, having sanitized toothbrushes can help keep the entire family safer from sickness and harmful bacteria. Global Chic: that's what supermodel/entrepreneur IMAN calls her exceptional, and affordable, line of accessories and fashion items. I was excited to meet IMAN in person (yes, she is gorgeous) and quickly realized that this savvy entrepreneur has a huge (and growing) hit on her hands, with her Global Chic collection for the Home Shopping Network.  IMAN has traveled far and wide, both as a model, and also as the wife of rock star David Bowie. IMAN admitted that she loves jewelry and likes to collect beautiful things from around the world. What might have started as a hobby, is now the mainstay of her business. Many if not most of the items in the collection you see above are copies (or inspired by) items IMAN personally owns, including pieces given to her by Bowie. Sometimes all it takes is one, well-chosen item (and it needn't cost a fortune) to take your look from blah to head-turning. Even if your budget is getting drained from holiday shopping, be generous to yourself and invest in some accessories that make any holiday outfit, a standout. White House \ Black Market, and Chicos are two favorite stores that have spectacular accessories at affordable prices. And I just recently discovered ELLE hair and jewelry accessories. UhOh!  You overdid the goodies during the holidays. Turn over a new leaf at the gym, and start watching your calories, but while you're waiting to slim down,  L'eggs offers an affordable, instant fix: L'eggs Profiles are waist smoothing, bulge blasting, body  shapers and they cost under $10.00!  There are a variety of styles, all in three sizes (S,M,L) in three product categories: Smoothers, Toners and Tights, with two levels of control, moderate and firm. The "Smoothers" include: Mid-Thigh Smoother, Capri Smoother, Waist Smoother Mid-Thigh, and Waist Smoother Capri; available in black and nude, all firm control. The "Toners"  include: Mid-Thigh Toner Silky Sheer hosiery, with and without Anti-Cellulite (moderate), and Waist Smoother Toner Sheer Energizing hosiery (firm); available in sun beige, black and nude. There are also tights: Tummy Toning Opaque Tight with Anti-Cellulite (firm), and Cool Comfort Energizing Leg Tight (moderate); available in black and brown. I have learned to embrace body shapers,  because they make such a huge, and immediate difference in how clothes look. These are so inexpensive, and yet, well made. Even the  "firm control" capris weren't uncomfortable. And you can wear them out, with a tunic, as well as using them under clingy pants. They also make a great travel companion. The firm control mid-thigh shaper goes all the way up past any "muffin top" and slims all the way down to your thighs. If all you need is a little bit of "slimming," this one works, beautifully.

One of the very first “healthy” skincare products I ever tried was from Kiss My Face. What a surprise to learn that they also made toothpaste and mouthwash. Kiss My Face Breath Blast 16 fl. oz. $9.99 is an affordable and pleasant way to keep your breath fresh, using a natural formula to kill bad breath. The product has no parabens, no alcohol, artificial sweeteners, flavors or animal ingredients and was not tested on animals. Although you are not likely to drink this vanilla minty breath freshener. If you did you’d be happy to know it has pomegranate, green tea, and Goji berry, sweetened with natural Xylitol. A white, plastic bottle keeps the product safe from spills and fro shattering glass. It comes in a variety of flavors besides vanilla mint. If you want your family to be more “natural” in the products it chooses, Kiss My Face has a gazillion good ones!

Winter Fragrance Selections:

A "Mistral" is a strong, cold and usually dry regional wind in France, and also means "masterly." However, there's nothing cold or dry about the lovely Eau de Parfum scent $52.00 1.7 fl. oz. by Mistral called: "Mare Sauvage" ( or "Wild Blackberry") or Balinese Vanilla, from the Mistral Eau de Parfum collection. This company captures the scents of the Mistral in their purest form, using coveted botanicals, exotic woods, rare spices, and ripe fruits. Their collection features eight scents, housed in beautiful, blown glass bottles that are rounded half moons, with a sprinkling of glass polka dots peeking through the bottom, a satin ribbon around the neck of the bottle holding a petite, scalloped name tag with gold accents. The outer carton is a classic, hard-sided presentation box, featuring Mistral's signature wreath. I tried the Wild Blackberry and Balinese Vanilla scents.  Wild Blackberry was feminine and light, composed of fruits both uplifting, and robust. The notes include berries, green vine, and just a touch of white musk, and vanilla to add a bit of roundness to the scent. And I initially expected a sweet and uncomplicated vanilla from the Balinese Vanilla, but the warm, seductive, spicy scent of this vanilla is a beautifully blended fragrance featuring geranium, amber, exotic woods, and patchouli, plus vanilla from Bali. These are beautiful and unique fragrances that will appeal to all ages, and they're surprisingly, modestly priced for a fabulous, French scent. Get Wild Blackberry, or Balinese Vanilla, or one of the other scents that include Verbena, Lychee Rose, Grapefruit Red Currant, South Seas, and Gardenia. They're just lovely, packaged like perfumes you find in French Boutiques.

I received a sample of I am Balance 50 ml eau de Parfum...$72.00 10 ml roll-on eau de Parfum...$30.00 from Danica Aromatics at the Spa Magazine Event last Fall.  There is a Danica, and she is, to quote her: "passionate about perfume. When crafting each blend, I feel its rhythm, its vibrations..... In an instant, I am perfume returns us to our essence."  There are 13 different fragrances that can announce who you really are,  including: balance. love, passion, rich, hot, naked, good, and wild, peace, spirit, me and energy. I love the classic packaging with colorful labels. Each bottle has an affirmation. For I am Balance it's:"  I am balance My mind is calm and centered. I am aware of my breath, my feelings. Rocking gently in the cradle of the universe. I am balance. " The scent is unisex, clean, light, and uplifting, with a blend of grapefruit, green tea, and spice added thanks to pink peppercorns. It's lovely, and unique. it makes you feel good. I didn't try any of the other scents...yet...but they seem to be a thoughtful representation of what you might feel if you wanted to express an emotion through fragrance. If you're seeking something lovely you won't smell on everyone else, check out this line.

Reese Witherspoon has a universally appealing, ladylike, Southern charm, with a quick smile and a sparkling personality.  Maybe that's why the time was right for Ms. Witherspoon to work with Avon to create her first fragrance called In Bloom by Reese Witherspoon Eau de Parfum $34.00, 1.7 fl. oz;; Body Mist  $15.00, 3.4 fl. oz.; Body Lotion $15.00, 7 fl. oz. ; Shower Gel $15.00, 7 fl. oz.. The scent initially smells as I might perceive Reese Witherspoon: girly, ladylike, and lighthearted. But as it dries down you get another side of the scent and of the actress who helped to create it. Very Strong, Very independent...this fragrance shows where I am right now in my life....I'm really proud of it (the fragrance), "says Reese in a short, video interview. The fragrance starts with a square, cardboard carton in a soft, peachy nude with delicate, white trim and a tiny round monogram in gold. It looks ladylike, almost bridal. Inside the romantic theme is carried through in the half round, clear glass bottle, topped with a very large, clear plastic blossom, over the spray diffuser. At first sniff, the scent is light and floral, with a hint of fruit, but upon drydown you can sense the more sensual, spicy notes. It's not heavy so you can spritz with wild abandon and still not knock anyone over, but it has staying power. it's the kind of scent you need to get close, to really appreciate. That's hot! Top Notes are: Georgia Peach Tea Leaves, and Crisp Greens; Heart Notes include: Star Gardenia, Magical Magnolia, Night Blossoming Jasmine; and the sexy base notes are: Cashmere Woods, Hypnotic Florals, Amber Wood Crystals. I love the fact that there are a number of body products you can use to layer the scent, or wear as-is. The most expensive piece in the collection is still under $60.00...amazing!

Pretty Woman $80.00 1.7 fl. oz. is the creation of Barbara Orbison, widow of Roy Orbison (who popularized the tune: "Oh Pretty Woman"). Ms. Orbison, herself a dabbler in creating unique scent for herself,  helped select the bottle from the prestigious Versailles de Porchet in Paris, and also the graphic design of the package and label. Pretty Woman arrives in a classic, cream colored cardboard box, trimmed with black (Roy Orbison's signature color) with Pretty Woman in gold script. It's chic, classic, and understated. Inside, the bottle is a low, sideways rectangle, unadorned except for the name: "Pretty Woman," in gold script, and a slim, slightly tapered, shiny metal gold cap over the spray diffuser. Inside the bottle is an oriental scent that the fragrance announces itself with a burst of luminous bergamot, middles notes of stargazer lily, red rose and carnation, and a very pronounced and spicy/incense-y blend of fresh amber, patchouli, vanilla, atlas cedar, and sacred incense. At first the distinct scent shows its base notes, not the top note. As the scent dries down, the intense cedar, incense, and patchouli take center stage, with a mere nod to the floral heart. This is a sensual, empowering scent for women. Best to apply it, sparingly. The fragrance reminds me of the grown-up version of potions I smelled long ago, in head shops (thanks to the patchouli, incense and vanilla). There may be a "pretty woman" in every female, but I associate this scent more with the era of the burgeoning women's liberation movement, than with Julia Robert's plucky prostitute in the movie "Pretty Woman." If you like Barbara's Orbison's Pretty Woman fragrance you'll be glad to know that in the works is a concentrated perfume oil, and scented candles. Let this spicy and seductive scent linger in the air, and on you, and...enchant someone

Winter Makeup and Nails:

I've reviewed products from La Bella Donna on and off during my beauty writing career.   This brand was the first, genuine, minerals makeup that the Advice Sisters ever reviewed.  I've loved a lot of their products, but my new favorite is  Vision of Mineral Lights $45.00.  This is a quartet of natural looking colors that perk up every complexion (especially in the Winter, when skin just seems to be drained of all life). These aren't loose in a shaker jar, (as most minerals seem to be), but instead, they're pressed powder minerals in a chic, shiny, silvery, mirrored compact. This mineral makeup is of the highest quality -- silky and blendable, and sheer.  "Sunset" is a new quartet, with subtle tones of Sunkist Coral, Burnt Coral, Apricot Cream and (as a highlight), Pearled Bisque. Coral warms up your face,  just a bit, while the gold shimmer enhances the color. Brush color on the apples of your cheeks and just above your cheekbones.  You can also use these same products on your eyes, so you can multi-task and travel lighter.  The copper color is bright, but oranges and coppers were seen all over the runways, so give it a try!  If you love these (and I think you will), you can also get  "Blushing" (pinks) and Naturale (nudes). These are non-irritating, long-lasting and luxurious. One quartet do so much, so it's just a little splurge with a lot of practicality, built in!

One of the best things you can do for yourself during dreary winter days is add some color to your wardrobe and your face, with a set of trendy eye shadows.  Napoleon Perdis Eye Palettes $20.00 are trios of color that can be mixed and matched. They are enriched with vitamins A, C and E, featuring have anti-oxidant and anti-aging benefits that help nourish your skin.  The pressed powder shadows have mica (for smooth blending) and intense pigments that give your complexion the color pop it craves.  The sleek, white, mirrored compacts are pristine, except for sophisticated black lettering, and the Napoleon Perdis, logo. New trios include: "Amsterdam" (photo) with light, medium and dark plum/violet and purple shades. "Dublin"  with silvery-grey , deep moss and gold, and "Cairo" features warm, desert sandy tones. These are affordable and will continue to make you feel just a little bit "new & improved" as Winter wears on. PartySet $32.00 has silvery, sparkling, sequins. Inside are a whopping 26 different shades! This travel-perfect kit also has mini applicator cosmetics brush, a dual-tipped sponge applicator, and a lip brush. You can use the 18 eye colors in the trios as arranged in, or skip from the top row to the bottom row and then use a random color in between for a saucy statement. Balance a bold eye look with a subtle blush or lip hue. The blush colors are fairly intense, and very blendable. Four lip colors range from a shimmery clear, to pink, rose and mauve. The lip products are thoughtfully placed beneath a mirrored cover, so you can apply them easily, and keep them safe from the surrounding, powder products. Mr. Perdis meant the name: "PartySet" to mean that the colors make you ready for any party. But for me, the kit is a "party in a box!"

Le Metier De Beaute is about to enter your life and change it for the better! There are makeup products, and then there are products that make you feel like a rock star. Le Metier De Beaute has that star quality, with beautifully presented products in unique, wearable colors, packaged in chic compacts. The products are also high performance, with gorgeous textures and colors that stay This high end line is luxurious and special. For example, their Red Rapture Kaleidoscope Lip Kit $95.00 (*there are other lip kits in other color combos, too, but red is such a must have color right now). is a round, shiny, silvery compact with four, fabulous, luminous, lip shades interpreted in red. The top flips open to reveal a mirror, and the four trays with lip colors swivel to the side to reveal their treasure. These silky, sexy lip colors are enriched with antioxidants Vitamin A, C & E. and emollients including lanolin oil and beeswax) that help smooth and hydrate even parched lips. Universally flattering ranging from browned red to clear and bold: Leeds, Monaco, Castelo and Tremezzo—beautiful for all skin tones. *there's a lot more about Le Metier de Beaute on the Advice Sisters Blog

It has been quite some time since we reviewed anything from Jemma Kidd, an internationally known makeup artist and cosmetics designer (with her own school, in London) whose products are widely popular, and  available in the United States...at Target!  Prepare your skin for a foundation, or make bare skin just look...better.  Jemma Kidd Mannequin Skin Illuminating Concealer $18.00 multitasks as a concealer and illuminator to smooth and enhance even Winter weary complexions. One end of this dual ended beauty helper is a "lipstick" style concealer with Vitamins A, C and E to moisturize and smooth.  The color I tried "Mid Dark 02" was a little deep for my pale skin, but will work for all those in-between tones.  The other side has a wanded, shimmery,  illuminating liquid highlighter. The sheer, white color will add a touch of "glam" to brighten, but if your skin is "mature" and you aren't so into shimmer, a little goes a long way.  I love multi taskers like this:  clever, portable, and a good value for an affordable, effective beauty "tool."   Add color to your complexion, with JCheek ID Color Adapt Blush $18.00. Blush can light up your look and your mood. However, finding a shade that looks as if you were "born with it" is really challenging.  Cheek ID Color Adapt Blush is a gel formula in a solid compact that looks like it could be a lip gloss, but it is a blush, that uses a hi-tech formula that interacts with the skin’s pH for a perfect match. When you apply the gel (use a little and layer to get the look you want), the product reacts to the natural pH in your cheeks for a natural color match. I have used these types of products before, and found that they turn too orange or red,  but this one added a sheer rose that looked just fine. No matter what your skin tone or skin type, this one will serve you well. You can use it on bare skin (as I did) or layer it over foundation.  The product also has Vitamins A and E. to help keep your skin healthy as well as looking good. "You can never go wrong with a tone that matches your born-with blush," says Jemma Kidd.  Well said!

Also at Target, is Pixi Cosmetics. I have been a fan of this line for years, especially their slim, mini kits for eye shadows and lip glosses.  For Winter, I suggest Pixi Flawless Beauty Primer No.1 EvenSkin $28.00.  The clear, frosted glass pump bottle with copper top looks elegant, but inside is a lightweight facial primer that adds a natural glow to bare skin, and helps smooth out your skin to make foundation or bronzer, even better.  The product is good for all skin types, and has the following: Pearl Extract for revitalization, protection and anti-aging; Truffle Extract, rich with amino acids and minerals to tone and hydrate; Vitamin E to increase skin elasticity;  Vitamin A, a powerful antioxidant and Vitamin C for revitalizing and nourishing benefits, plus anti-aging and skin fortifying benefits.  That's a lot to expect from a primer, but this one performs. One pump is all you need for your entire face. The product is fragrance free, dries fast, and is a perfect first step in your makeup routine. While you are preparing your face this Winter, also brighten up your tired eyes with Pixi's Eye Bright Liner $16.00.  What I like about this slim, creamy, swivel up pencil is that the nude-pink color gives the illusion of larger, brighter and more awake eyes, even when you are not feeling so chipper. The self-sharpening pen has a precision point, and it's waterproof.  It's also hypoallergenic, paraben and mineral-oil free, and friendly to sensitive eyes. TIP:  use the pencil to line the inner lower rim of your eyes, to make them look bigger and more awake. You can also use it as a lip bow highlighter to give the illusion of youthful, pouty lips!” Using it as a lip liner also helps to keep your lipstick and gloss, from running.

Maybelline's latest launches for Winter 2010 made me literally, gasp!  These are not just so-so products with so-so-colors and formulas, they're great products with trendy colors and great packaging (not to mention innovative formulas) that work for everyone.  The prices are insane for the quality, performance and chic-factor.  From bunches of new mascaras, to loads of eye shadow quarters to drool over, foundations that look great and last, and last, and last...and the silkiest, sexiest, most delectable tube lip glosses,  what they've got in store, you're going to want ...everything, and all of it!  You must see the additional scoop and photos on the Advice Sisters Blog.

Eyebrows were a huge focus on the Spring runways.  You either had to have noticeable (and well groomed) brows, or they were "nuded out" so you could barely see them.  Nuded out brows are dramatic, but they're not really all that attractive on most women.  Well groomed, well defined brows, however, are attractive and a must-have.  One easy, two-in-one product that is new, portable, and easy to use, is the cleverly-named:  Arch de Triumph $9.99 by Soap & Glory.  I love the girly, pink, white and black packaging with clever little quips (about brows) on the cardboard package. Inside, there's a dual-ended, creamy pencil. One side for shaping, one site for highlighting.  The coloring side has a universally flattering, golden blonde/brown color that will work for most everyone unless your brows are black. You need just a touch of the highlighting to add a little bit of lift and glamour to your brow bone. TIP:  Add a touch of the highlighter in the "bow" of your upper lip to make it look poutier, too. You also get brow stencils in three sizes/shapes that pop right out of the packaging, for those who really are clueless about where to add color or tweeze. I recommend your eye rather than a stencil.  Stencils are one size fits all, and you are unique!  However, if you want to try them, use  them for coloring your brows, first. Then, you can always wash off the results if you don't like the shape.

Revolution Organics has a number of products that are good for your skin, but now, they've created a line of color cosmetics, too.  I tried the Freedom Glow Beauty Balm $34.00.  A chunky, multi-purpose,. swivel up stick of blush has a creamy, color formula that is 100% natural and 84% certified organic ingredients. You can use the balm on your cheeks, but also as a lip stain, or even on your eyes, if you wish. This super-portable product doesn't just add color, but has  cold-pressed olive oil and super-moisturizing coconut oil.  During the Winter months especially, skin needs all the moisturizing TLC it can get. The product is also great for skin that is sensitive to chemicals, artificial ingredients, and synthetics, because it doesn't have any!  The product comes in three colors:  "Sunkissed" (a fresh peach glow); "Blushed" (a rosy blush) and "Bronzed" (warm golden bronze glow).  I tied the rose-tinted "Blushed.' It looked super-bright pink in the tube, and when I swiped it on my cheeks, it also looked very bright. But when I smoothed it around, it became a lovely, rose blush that added life to my face without making it clown-like. Let me also add that it wasn't sticky, and worked on bare skin as well as over foundation. The intensity can be adjusted by adding more or less, and blending it out more or less, to suit any skin tone.  What I really liked about "Blushed" was how it looked on my lips...a perfect, American beauty rose tint that I've never seen reproduced in any lipstick. Now, I can travel with less products, and look great, anywhere!

By now, you probably know that a good sun block will help prevent skin damage and premature aging, but do you also protect your hands as well as the rest of your skin? If you answered “no” you need to consider that old looking hands give your age away no matter how “young” the rest of your skin, appears to be. Zo Skin Health Daily Hand Repair SPF 20 $65.00 3.4 fl. oz. by Dr. Zein Obagi, is a daily hand repair that also has an impressive UVA/UVB protection. During the Winter months especially, when skin can feel dry and tight and itchy, a good hand cream is a must. But if you use this one, you will also be providing those hard working hands with broad spectrum sun protection. The active ingredients are 7.5 % Octinoxate; 3% Avobenzone; and 2% Ocybenzone . It also has retinol and anti-oxidants to help rid your skin of age spots and to help tighten and tone skin. As a hand moisturizer, it’s luxe and rich, but still feels light, and yes, it is, effective. As a way to keep your hands healthy, it’s a fabulous choice. My only complaint is that I wish it was in a flip top or pump bottle...and I wish there was a travel size, too so I could take it everywhere! TIP:  Do a similarly good turn for your face, with Oclipse Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30. $85.00 1 fl. oz.. This amazing tinted sun protector/moisturizer/primer has natural sunscreen protection with melanin, and also titanium dioxide 10.2% and zinc oxide3.7%. It is silicone based, so it smoothes into your skin without any problems, and creates a smoother surface on which to add a foundation or bronzer.. I love the twist up/down pump that keeps the product fresh and free of germs. while keeping hands, clean. . It is not inexpensive, but the  multi-tasking abilities make it invaluable.

YOU CAN BE PART OF  A VERY SPECIAL PROJECT:

There is a "first time" for everything. I'm asking readers to share a recollection about the first time they tried something. Think about what things have challenged you in life.  Perhaps the "first time" challenge was the first time you applied faux eyelashes, or made a speech, or asked someone to dance, or traveled solo, or maybe it's the first time you tried skydiving! No experience is too insignificant! The purpose of this project is to show other that everyone has some anxiety when they do something new. Without confidence and courage, you can't fail, but you can't succeed either!  I have set up a special project FORM that makes it easier to  participate.  The Advice  Sisters thank you in advance for helping to make this project a succcess!

SpaRitual makes all sorts of spa and at-home, spa-style products.  You can't help but feel just a little bit more pampered, using them. This Winter, enjoy a little treat and great looking nails! SpaRitual's excellent Nail Lacquer $10.00 are not only vegan, they are kind to your nails, being DBP, toluene and formaldehyde-free.  The company's philosophy is to combine eco-luxury with a spirit-consciousness.  The  brand uses eco-friendly packaging and printing processes, with bottles made from reusable glass, and other, natural elements that are fully recyclable. I love the elegant shape of the bottle, and the rubberized top that makes it easy to grip and apply the polish. This company is so into "green," even their printing processes make a nod to the environment, with soy-based inks and FSC-certified papers.  But it's the product inside the bottle that captivates. "Forbidden" launched a few months ago, but it's a gorgeous, timely collection of six, delectable colors, with rich, intense, creme tones will take you "trendy" through Spring. Two of my favorites are  "Regal," a dark, plum that's looks like wine velvet on your nails; " and on the opposite side of the spectrum, "Mystic" is a camel creme that is as elegant as a cashmere sweater. "Intrigue" is an earthy browned red that is a pretty alternative to all the cool, blue reds on the market.  "Body" isn't from this collection, but I adore the matte charcoal that has a hint of navy when seen in certain light.  It satisfies the "blackened" trend in a whole, new way.

This season, purples, plums, berries, and wine colors are the must-haves both in clothing, and for nails.  Insta-Dri Nail Color $4.95  from Sally Hansen gives you a variety of gorgeous, jewel-tones in the purple family, and they cost so little!  Three shades I love for now are "Wined-Up," a glorious, metallic merlot that looks elegant and is a great alternative to reds. "Cinna-Snap" is a blood ruby burgundy, gleaming a rich and without shimmer. It looks like precious jewels, or perhaps, velvet. A not quite brown, not quite plum, not quite copper, is the shimmery "Mochachino." No matter which one you choose, you will be in style, in seconds.  I love the large brush that lets you swipe on the smooth, opaque color in literally, one swipe. I love the way it lasts for days, too. The exclusive "Flexiglass" complex gives you shine and strength. Apply it in seconds, get gorgeous color and it lasts longer than many salon manicures? It's true!

This time of year, my skin seems to turn, like Dr. Jekyll into my Hyde. What was once soft or at least passably so, suddenly becomes itchy, dry, and in some places, so rough it catches on soft fabrics. The culprit is the change of seasons, plus the extra whammy of dry heat, wind, and cold. These skin saboteurs can really make your body face and hands feel especially irritated and uncomfortable. Clinique:  Deep Comfort Hand and Cuticle Cream $17.50 2.5 Fl. oz.  is a rich, soft yellow cream that works instantly on even the roughest of skin, coating it in soothing, hydrating comfort (for up to 12 hours).  It even helps to improve the condition of your cuticles and nails–body parts we often don't specifically remember to moisturize. Glycerin and sodium hyaluronate help prevent further dehydration, while birch extract helps to re-establish the skin’s moisture barrier–so claw-like conditions don’t re-appear on your hands. Vitamins C and E provide antioxidant protection, while a blend of interesting ingredients (barley extract, wheat extract, and murumuru butter) work together to help your skin keep moisture in, dryness, away. Gentian extract also soothes and comforts dry or irritated skin. It is fragrance free, works lightening fast and yet, it's not at all greasy. Not every hand cream does it’s job well, and many don’t have lasting benefits, but this one, really does.  There’s also a Deep Comfort Body Wash $20.00 that I didn’t try, but I’m willing to bet that it provides a good assault on the dry, irritated skin on the rest of your body, too. Both products are also appropriate for even those with sensitive skin. They’re must-haves for now and throughout the Winter months.

Winter Hair Helpers:

I love Redken products, and I'm always thrilled when they come out with something new. This time, people with flat, limp or thin hair are the lucky ones, because Redken has recently introduced Body Full.  The new, Body Full haircare collection plumps up the volume, and does it for more than 24 hours, so you don't look pumped up, and then, pooped, before they day is done. Reviewers whose hair lacked body said they loved the light feel of the Shampoo $13.00 10.1 fl. oz. and Conditioner $14.00 8.5 fl. oz.  There's also a very effective,  Body Full Bodifier $16.00 5 oz. and although we didn't try it, there's a Body Full Volume Amplifier $16.00 5 oz. The shampoo comes in a striking, clear, green plastic bottle with black flip top. The clear gel formula has a citrus-y scent that's uplifting. You can use it daily (or every other day) to remove build-up of styling products and oil and dirt that can weigh your hair down. The Conditioner comes in a light green opaque bottle, and has a clean, almost green tea scent. The other two products are used after shampooing and conditioning as you are styling your hair.  The Body Full Bodifier gives additional "oomph," structure and support to towel-dried hair. The secret to Body Full's success is a nonstop volume complex that includes wheat extract (provides a light, textural effect that plumps up each strand for longer-lasting fullness and lift); a strengthening support with soy protein to reinforce fragile, thin hair strands and help repair and prevent breakage;  and a lightweight detangling action with cotton (believe it or not) to help soften and detangle without weighing down even baby fine hair. Winter tends to make hair limp, static-y, and of course you may have flat, hat hair as well. So if your issue is thin, limp, flat hair normally, and you wonder  how to keep hair looking volumized without compromise, try Redken's Body Full!

Wouldn't it be great if your brush helped your hair look smooth and shiny, dry faster, and help you style it, too? The Duet Brush by Hair Art $15.00 pairs a tong-style brush (two brushes face to face) in natural boars bristle,  with high tech ceramic plates, to do just that. The ceramic plates work with your hair dryer to lock in moisture and let you get your hair super-smooth faster, so you actually use less let for less time. When stylists at the salon want to get your hair super straight and smooth, they need to get a good grip on it, but that's hard to do on your own, at home. This brush is double-sided so you can grip a piece of hair and hold onto it the down the entire length, while you use your dryer. The result is a perfectly smooth, shiny, straight look.  It really works!   Having a brush like this is just like having an extra pair of hands.  My thick, wavy hair dried much faster, without a hint of frizz.  I didn't even need to use a flat iron, afterwards.  Now that's,  fantastic!  When it comes to waves and curls, I was less impressed.  A round brush to finish off the ends still works better, but in a pinch, you can get a flip under or up, with a flick of your wrist, and the Duet brush. It does so much, for so little. It's something you won't want to be without.

Oloff Beauty was founded in 1998 by Guida Dovas in NYC. and the Advice Sisters reviewed some of their lines several years ago, including: Barex Hair Care and  the AETÓ Botanica Collection. Barex Hair care uses water soluble (and weightless) compounds to help your hair look sleek and shiny, with added volume. I am a big fan of the Barex Gloss Shampoo $27.50 and Conditioner $28.50. Some glossing shampoos make hair sticky or weighted down, but this one is light, fresh smelling, and nicely lathering, leaving nothing behind but soft, silky, shiny hair.  The shampoo features coconut, sunflower and palm kernel to help hydrate, soften and protect.  The conditioner's botanical stars include guar vegetable and D-Panthenol.  Both are great for any hair and make cleansing into a spa-style delight!  Just a few weeks ago on the Advice Sisters Blog, I also recommended a nifty  Aeto Botanica travel kit as a holiday gift that can introduce you (or someone special) to the line: the AETÓ -Ette Traveler Hair & Body Spa On-the-Go Set $35.00. This set includes a nicely boxed set of  four,  3.05 oz. products:  Body creme (with murumuru butter and precious myrrh); Fortifying Shampoo (with yucca and bamboo); Fortifying Hair Mask (also with bamboo and featuring wild mango "butter)); and Body Shampoo (with myrrh, pure extract of cranberry, and passion flower). These botanical, spa-style products provide anti-aging and rejuvenating products that make daily cleansing, a relaxing ritual.

You've finally succeeded in growing long, strong, beautiful hair, and now you have to maintain it. Long hair is exposed to more strains than short hair, so start with styling tools that won't damage it.  Great Lengths products have been especially developed for long hair and people who have hair extensions. For example, the Great Lengths nxt extension Genuine Paddle Hair Brush (Oval) by Acca Kappa, Srp. $40.00  helps you keep your hair straight and smooth, no matter what the length of your hair.  Just sweep the brush down the length of your hair with a smooth motion, to create sleek looks you'll love, without frizz or fuss, or damage. The brush has long, nylon bristles interspersed with shorter clumps of boars bristle,  to grip hair without ripping it. The family operated Acca Kappa business is dedicated to a tradition of quality in materials and workmanship.  All Acca Kappa products are made and imported from Italy. If your hair is fragile, and especially if you have extensions, or very long hair, you will want one of these exceptional brushes (there are smaller and flat paddle brushes too) to protect your investment!

Tela Balance Shampoo  8.45 fl. oz $28.00 and Conditioner, are nice, daily shampoos that help restore elasticity, protect against environmental aggressors, and offer bouncy, shiny, healthy, hair.  Their formulas use advanced micro-emulsions of organic sea buckthorn berry. Reishi mushroom and pomegranate, that also help protect hair color from fading, while natural sunscreen protects all hair from UV damage.  The packaging is simple, a light green plastic with flip tops. This is a fairly pricey duo that doesn't look all that exceptional (the conditioner, for example, is an ugly camel color) but when I dried my hair, it looked soft, shiny, and was amazingly manageable, and I didn't even need to use another frizz control or styling product to get it that way.  That made me take another look and try again. Same results--wow!

Sometimes it is the little things that make my day. For example, the new, Scunci Linziclip Maxi $3.49; Midi $2.99; Mini Linziclips (4) $3.99.  This is a simple, plastic jaw clip, with a difference...the design eliminates the bulky "jaws," hides the springs, and banishes those awkward  "wings" that stick out of the top to open and close most clips.  This new clip lies flat against your head!   The sleeker silhouette not only looks nicer but lets you lean your head back without the clip digging into your scalp or neck.  This is particularly great if you're driving, doing sit-ups at the gym, or want a more sophisticated look. The clips come in all sorts of hair-color coordinating colors, from traditional black,  navy, amber, tortoise and white, to fashion colors such as mauve, garnet, taupe, silver, gold, and even a sheer green.  They're available in tiny clips, medium sized clips (for those popular half up/half down) styles, and in a maxi version for ponytails and thicker hair. I have super-thick hair, so I needed the largest one for a ponytail, but I loved the look!  The cost is  well within the realm of affordable.  Once you try these clips, you may be tempted to just throw all the others, away

What's comes in a silvery tin, is red, and you can wash your hair with it?  The Lush Cosmetics, New Solid Shampoo bar in Stimulating & Reviving Mint $9.25 1.9 fl. oz. of course!  This travel-friendly product is a solid cake of shampoo, that lathers nicely, smells great (mint & cinnamon), and  has stimulating essential oils to encourage healthy hair growth. Rosemary and nettle also adds shine to your newly cleansed, pampered, hair.  The product is good for everyone, but if your hair is thin, or you're losing some of it due to age, or hormones, this little cake of soap could help your strands, stick around. It is good for all hair types although it's great for thinning hair, and it is a fun product to use. This solid cake is a product that won't leak or be confiscated when you travel by plane. Tip:  Be sure to dry, or air-dry the tin and the cake soap before you put it away, or it may stick so solidly into the tin you have to pry it loose with a sharp object!

Sometimes, simple, easy, and inexpensive does do wonders. Avon's Advanced Techniques Moisture Sleek Smoothing Products, for example. They make a significant difference in how your hair looks, feels, and styles, for just a little cash. The Avon Advanced Techniques Smoothing Cream $4.00 6.7 fl. oz. is a leave in "find" in a plastic, flip top tube.It detanglesr hydrates and smoothes dry, unruly hair, while it also seals in moisture and helps prevent frizz. Just apply a bit through your hair, and comb it through, then style. This cream is designed especially for medium to coarse hair types that typically have the most trouble, being "tamed." What I love so much about it (besides the nice price) is that it doesn't require any effort and yet, it still works (even better if you use it with the shampoo and conditioner in the same line). And a tiny dollop of Avon Advanced Techniques Moisture Sleek Smoothing Serum $5.00 2.03 oz. will make your hair super-shiny without weight or grease (it is great for all hair types, too). Silicones instantly do the job without spending a fortune to try and tame hair into submission with tools and time. If you hair is thick, curly, frizzy, coarse or some combination of these, and you long for soft, shiny, straight and non-frizzy hair, you owe it to yourself to try these Avon products.

Kairos (from ancient Greek)" "a moment of undetermined period of time in which something special happens." Kairos is also the name of a company that creates unusual hair care products that can do something special -- treat acne as well as keep hair shiny and clean. Nurses Catherine Parker and Doreen Campbell realized that the kind of products people put on their hair, had a big impact on their skin. When you think about it, this makes sense.  After all, it isn't just your hair getting all that "pampering," treatment, but also your face and body. The products you use in the shower run down your face and body, and even post-cleansing sprays can get on your face.  In addition, women with longer hair know that it will fall onto their face and body.  Kairos Acne Care helps to alleviate some of the potential for breakouts and further irritation of acne by avoiding ingredients that can clog pores and cause breakouts. They use non-comedogenic oils and natural botanicals such as tea leaf oil, lavender oil, sweet almond oil (just to name a few). This line has a number of styling products. I tried the Clarifying Complexion-Clearing Shampoo $24.00 12 fl. oz.; and Balancing Breakout-Controlling Conditioner $28.00 12 fl. oz. . Both products have a super-light scent, cleansed and conditioned nicely, and made my hair look good. I don't have acne and don't break out all that often, but if I did, I'd see a good dermatologist, and give these products a try, as every little bit, helps!

During the Winter our skin tends to be dry.  Your hair may need extra TLC, too.  Umberto Beverly Hills is a hair care line exclusively at Target. Master cutter and stylist Umberto Savone offers a number of affordable but luxurious hair care products, but  one,. the Umberto Beverly Hills Collagen Pre-Shampoo Treatment $9.99 7.5 fl. oz., actually helps to plump the hair cuticle (with hydrolyzed collagen and protein) in a remarkable, pre-treatment lotion. Distribute the lotion liberally to saturate your hair before you shampoo and leave it on for about ten minutes.  The lotion seals the surface of the hair, and the benefits are already locked in and have penetrated the hair cuticle so it will not wash out. This is pretty remarkable,

Not all nano titanium hair tools are the same. The UStyler Model BABNTPP2 by BaByliss Pro $129.99, for example, is a professional styling tool that will help even do-it-yourself-ers create not just smooth styles, but curls, too! * The UStyler is the model on the top in this photo, the bottom photo shows the popular, Babyliss Pro Nano Titanium 1 ¼” Flat Iron. The first thing you notice is that the iron has a cool, matte, light blue Ryton housing (a material that resists high heat), a rubberized thumb rest and cool tip and handle accents, to help stylists stay safe and comfortable. And, most importantly, the iron isn't a tacky "toy," it really looks and feels substantial. It has 1" plates, with advanced sol-gel technology, that helps your hair glide more smoothly through them. There are three heat settings including one that's an impressive, 450 degrees (use this setting if your hair is super thick or coarse, and use protective styling products). The on/off and heat settings are on an easy to find, slider switch, and all light up so you can see clearly what temperature your iron is on. It also heats up lightening fast....literally, in seconds. And this fantastic flat iron has something else to help you multi-task your styles: It has not just flat plates to smooth hair super-straight, but also curved side cooling plates that help you make everything from soft waves, to corkscrews, with just a flick of your wrist! For More details on the BaByliss pro stylers, read the full review on the Advice Sisters Blog

Just For the Guys:

LUSH Cosmetics have always been eco-friendly, but one "green" product men and women will both love, is The Greeench $11.25 3.5 fl. oz. This is a refreshing, loose body powder in a shaker jar, with thyme, sage, and rosemary for a clean, herbal, uplifting scent. The first ingredient is talc, but it also has tea tree oil and essentials oils that help reduce natural body odors while discouraging sweating, which is always a good thing in my book. Bicarb and microfine magnesium trisilate help you keep dry by absorbing excess moisture (there are no preservatives or aluminum to irritate sensitive skin).I had no problem shaking some of this powder into my shoes,  but shaking powder into your armpits is a bit trickier. Guys shake it all over themselves, and love it...so that's why it is in the "just for the guys" section of this column. Guys: remember to share!

Depth Shave Cream $6.99 5 oz. is a rich, creamy lotion that arrives with a choice of the same, four delicious, all natural aromas as the bath & body lotions (see Winter Skin Solutions, left hand column).  This shave cream comes in a tube with a green flip top. Inside, the product has the benefits of hydrating sea botanicals, and natural emollients, to give him a close, gentle shave that is 80% certified organic, and 100% vegetarian.  Brown, red, and green algae help nurture skin, while they hydrate and act as powerful detoxifiers. He may not appreciate all the skin-loving benefits, but then again, maybe he will. Our reviewers gave this product two thumbs up, and liked the citrus-y Mangrove Citrus, scent.

There are four different variations of Healthy Deodorant  $18.00 from Lavanilla:   Vanilla,  Vanilla Coconut, Vanilla Lavender Deodorant and Vanilla Grapefruit.  These vanilla-centric products are created 100% active botanicals, with essential oils, 30 essential vitamins and minerals, 19 amino acids, and antioxidants, plus soothing willowherb, and hydrating olive leaf. These are not only good to smell, they’re good for your skin. The solid-stick deodorants are not just for men, but there's one in particular (the fresh smelling Vanilla Grapefruit) that I think men will particularly like. The first thing that's important to note is that this is not a wimpy odor-chaser, it's a clinical-strength deodorant that is 100% natural, safe, and effective. It goes on clean, with no sticky wetness,  and it is  dermatologist-recommended, non-irritating, and with an allergy-tested formula does not contain aluminum or mineral oils, or other potentially harmful, irritants such as Parabens, Sulfates; Synthetic Dyes;  Petro-Chemicals;  or Phthalates. That makes it a pretty nifty way to stay fresh! *note that this is not an antiperspirant, it's for controlling odor.  Get one for your guy who thinks his sweat is swell, and maybe "stinky" will start smelling as sweet as you!

Usher VIP  3.4 fl. oz. Eau de Toilette $65.00; $50.00 1.7 fl. oz.; $16.00  Deodorant 2.6 oz.  released through Elizabeth Arden. Usher VIP was developed by perfumer Harry Fremont of Firmenich. The fragrance has top notes of tangerine, bergamot, kumquat and nutmeg; a heart of violet leaf, lotus flower and saffron; and sexy base notes of vetiver, oakmoss and suede. The resulting scent is a pleasing, masculine fragrance that has a lot of charm, just like Usher, himself. It's a warm and clean smelling. Not too heavy, not too light. You can really smell the bergamot, but also the deeper notes. It doesn't overpower, but it still lasts on the skin. We all loved the packaging. The square, metallic outer carton is done in gold with chocolate accents, and a big "V" embossed boldly into the carton is sexy and showy. The bottle inside is round, reminiscent of a fine cognac bottle. But it also has a lot of shiny gold metal for decoration, including a large, gold, metal "V" in the center of the bottle, and a highly decorated rolling ring,  inspired by one of Usher's own. Like many fragrances touted by (cute) male celebrities, this one will appeal to women. Savvy men will buy Usher VIP for themselves because it smells good, and the ladies will respond!

Maybe your special man doesn't think Grey's Anatomy actor, Patrick Dempsey (aka "McDreamy") is all that, but I am sure most women, do!.  Patrick Dempsey's second collaboration with Avon called Patrick Dempsey 2 $35.00 2.5 fl. oz. "Unscripted" was Mr. Dempsy's first scent, and the herbal, clean fragrance was a hit, even with who didn't care in the least about the hunky actor. Patrick Dempsey 2 is also light and clean, but more oriental citrus and spice, than herbal. The top notes are: mandarin, saffron and nutmeg, followed by mid notes of spiced wood accord, green fig and citrus. The base notes (and they're fairly airy on the nose) are olibanum, patchouli, guaicwood and skin musk. The soft, brown outer carton and brown glass bottle (with a hint of sage green) have a shape that is supposed to reflect strength and intimacy. To quote Patrick: "2 is about possibility. It represents the intimacy and strength of two individuals coming together with endless possibilities." I wonder how many women will purchase this for their special man, because they would like that "intimacy" with Patrick Dempsey?! No matter, it's a nice, everyday fragrance, it's affordable and most importantly, men will like it, too. Get it! There's a shave gel, moisturizer and face wash as well

ABOUT THE ADVICE SISTERS "What Works" Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion  Reviews:

The Advice Sisters web site and blog offer impartial, up-close-and-personal product reviews, conducted by  expert beauty & fashion reviewer, Alison Blackman Dunham.  If other opinions are included in a  review, "we" (instead of "I") is used.

My Review Philosophy: This beauty, fashion and cosmetics review column is called "What Works" (not what doesn't). I want to direct you to what I think are great products, not denigrate those I didn't like (but you might love).  All beauty reviews are subjective. It's my responsibility to describe products in a way that offers information, but allows you to use your own, good judgment about whether to buy it or not. I have tested thousands of products and that gives me a strong background on which to base my comments, but in the end, the decision to try something is yours, alone.

A Signature Approach    Many online publications and blogs find it easier and more economical to just post photos and press releases of products "as if" they have actually used them, or get paid for "advertorials" (reviews written in exchange for money).  I only allow genuine reviews. That is, I (or a qualified reviewer) actually try the products reviewed. This approach takes much more time and effort, but it is what distinguishes The Advice Sisters from a lot of others. I know you appreciate the difference.

A Note About  Compensation:  I never have, and never will, write about products using just high resolution photos and press releases, without experiencing the product "in person." These type of  "faux" reviews add to the junk and clutter on the Internet, without offering anything substantive or new.  In order to write real reviews of real products, however, I use samples provided by a company or a public relations firm. There is no way I could write valid, responsible, up-close-and-personal reviews without them.  Sample products and services are not  nearly "compensation" for the tremendous amount of effort it takes to write genuine reviews, nor do free samples influence my experienced opinion of products in any Advice Sisters content. I do not  use "advertorial" (paid content) and, when I choose to include paid advertisements, they are clearly identifiable. If you have any questions about The Advice Sisters policies or practices, feel free to Contact Alison
