BEAUTY TOOLS AND HELPERS

If men's razors are from Mars, women’s razors are from (Gillette) Venus!  Gillette's newest for women include Venus Embrace and Venus  Spa Breeze. Both offer close, safe, luxurious shaves with different benefits. The Venus Embrace has five, curve-hugging blades, spring-mounted to adjust the blades to the natural contours and curves of a woman's body. The blade cartridge sits flatter on your skin for a closer shave. Two lime, green moisture ribbons surround the shaving area top and bottom for a smooth glide, and less chance of nicks and cuts. The handle is contoured for a woman, with a rubberized feel that helps you grip and control it, even when wet. And when you’re done with the Venus Embrace, it “embraces” it’s own, white plastic “pod” holder that sticks to your shower wall with two suction cups. There’s even room for two, unused blades. The razor works nicely, but if you don’t love it, you can get your money back (the phone number is on the package). For more pampering, there’s the Venus Spa Breeze System srp $9.99 (4 refills srp. $11.49) disposable 2-pak srp .approximately $6.49 - $8.49. The system arrives in an impressive, white and clear plastic compact with a very girly, opalescent pink and white rubberized, “sure grip” handle (and two shave cartridges). The tri=-blade head has two large, pink shave gel bars, infused with the fresh scent of white tea. This razor also hugs your curves to give you a close, safe, smooth shave.  Sure you can use his razor, but the Gillette Venus razors are just for girls...so treat yourself!

Good hair styling tools are essential for a great look, but you don’t have to pay a fortune. Goody, for example, has lots of brushes with a variety of features to help you look your best, even on a budget. The So Smart Medium Hot Round Straightening Brush $4.99, for example. This round brush has a vented, metal core to keep heat in, but allow air to flow through for faster drying and styling. It’s got a rubbery, easy-grip black handle and tons of tiny, synthetic, static resistant bristles that grip hair and reduce flyaways that can ruin your style. There are a dozen different brushes in this collection, all at the same, low price. Another round styler I like is the Medium Round Styler Brush $9.99 from the Ouchless Hot Round Collection. These feature three ceramic barrel round brushes for short, medium and long hair The vented, ceramic barrel holds in the heat, but lets air flow through the tiny, synthetic bristles. Another feature is the quick release button that retracts the bristles so you call remove all the loose hair, easily. If you’ve ever gotten your hair stuck in a barrel brush, you’ll love this innovative feature that loosens the brush’s grip on your hair so you can free your hair without ripping it out! My favorite budget-minded brush is the So Smooth Paddle Brush srp. $7.99 from the Mosaic Collection. This collection features dozens of different products, ranging from $1.49 for a comb, to $12.99 for rollers and brushes. The wood-handled paddle brush has a traditional shape, but it has two types of bristles in one brush to smooth hair and make it shine, effortlessly. The thin, grey, ceramic infused pins penetrate and smooth hair. These are clustered with shorter, boar bristles that distribute the hair's natural oils from root to tip boosting shine and keeping that smooth style, even sleeker. I love it for blow drying hair, but it’s also fantastic as a finishing brush, for updos and when hair must be sleek!

Natural products have good benefits, especially if you have sensitive skin. Nature's Gate Organics line contains certified organic extracts known for their antiseptic and antibacterial properties, so you can enjoy the benefits of organic and natural products, without breaking the bank to do so. One product that we particularly like is the Nature’s Gate Deodorant Stick $5.99 1.7 oz. in Chamomile & Lemon Verbena. This solid clear gel stick doesn’t contain parabens or aluminum that can irritate your skin. Instead, baking soda and the organic botanicals help keep odor in check. This product, however, is not an anti-perspirant (for that you need aluminum, and other chemicals). The scent is wonderful–fresh and clean, it reminds me of Springtime. If you sweat heavily, you’ll probably want something that stops the wetness as well as the odor, but for everyday perspiration,  this deodorant is a nice and gentle alternative.

If you stand on your feet every day for hours like I do during Fashion Week, or you just like to walk a lot, you're putting a lot of pressure on the balls of your feet. That can result in burning and soreness.  Dr. Rosenberg's Instant Arches $80.00/pair are a one-size-fits-all, peel and stick product that works inside just about every type of shoe, to help support the muscles in your arches, and take the pressure off the ball of you foot. To use them, position each teardrop shaped Instant Arches 1/2 against the sock lining of your shoes, and 1/2 against the side wall of the shoe, with the widest part of the arch towards the tow and the narrow end towards the heel (for sandals and heels, place the arches in the middle of your shoe where your arch would normally be located). I have tried orthotics, but they are heavy, bulky and uncomfortable. These semi-soft, little pads (in black, tan or grey) provide a measure of relief from foot pain, without ruining my shoes or forcing me to wear clod-hoppers--clever, and affordable!

Blo & Go *$29.95 by Holster, Inc. is one of those "little things" that once you've tried it, you'll never want to be without it. It is a hair dryer holder--a metal ring with a bungee cord attached to a long, goose necked metal "arm," attached to a powerful suction cup. Apply it to your mirror and it holds the dryer at any angle so you have two, free hands to style your hair! After all, using a blow dryer to really style your hair takes time, patience, coordination, and strong arms!  Run your dryer through the ring, secure it with the cord, and you can choose to move your head, or the goose-necked arm into any position you want -- particularly good for the back of your hair, where it's really hard to reach with the dryer properly positioned. I’ve been looking for an all-in-one lip product, especially for travel that provides anti-feathering benefits plus lip plumping. I finally found a great one: the new, Collagen Filler Lip Contouring Treatment $19.99 by L’Oreal Paris. A slim tube holds a tiny tube (0.2 fl.oz) of Lip Plumper on one end, and Anti-Feathering cream on the other. Apply the anti-feathering cream around your lips before you apply color,  to help stop those little lines that funnel your lip color where you don't want it to be! L’Oreal’s exclusive Collagen Biosphere Technology uses dehydrated marine collagen spheres that absorb water naturally found in your skin, and expand up to nine time their size to smooth those lines and wrinkles. The second step is to apply to lip plumping serum directly to your lips (also before lip color) to make them look fuller and younger. The plumping action, thanks to hyaluronic micro-spheres (small enough to penetrate and expand up to 30 times their size on contact with water naturally found in your skin), makes lips instantly look better. But there's no stinging, foul taste, or burning that you get with many traditional lip plumpers. The products work together to create a great primer for your lip color--it will really make it last longer and look better. Just re-apply any time you feel the need. You’ll never want to leave home without it.

Shaving your skin can dry and irritate your skin, but Whish makes products that soothe it!  My favorite is Whish Body Shave Crave $24.00 5 fl. oz. pump bottle; Shave Crave Jar $32.00 6.7 oz. This unique, super-gentle,  shaving cream isn't the harsh, soapy detergent you know from a can,  commonly found on the market. It has all natural and organic ingredients, and pampers and moisturizes your skin with natural squalene (Omega 3--helps to banish roughness) and organic shea butter (super moisturizer); soothes with organic green tea and organic coconut oil, and nourishes with organic jojoba seed oil. Use the jar with a traditional shaving brush, or get the pump bottle. This round column of clear plastic with shiny black pump top and cap, comes in a round, hard-sided, cardboard tube, color-coded to the scent--and the scents are amazing: almond, pomegranate, and lemongrass.  After Shaving, Shave Savour Hair Inhibiting Gel $26.00 7.4 fl. oz.  helps moisturize, soothe irritation after shaving, waxing or laser treatments (use it after sun bathing, too), and actually slows hair growth!  The product features larrea divaricata (chapparel) extract to inhibit hair growth, organic aloe, organic shea butter and panthenol to moisturize, and hyaluronic acid and retinol palmitate to renew. We tried "Lemongrass," containing lemongrass oil to soothe muscle aches, ease stiff joints, and improve muscle tone. Now that's what I call a major multi-tasker!

Sweat and odor are definitely not fashionable or a turn-on (at least not for most people). Luckily, Secret continues to create new, effective, ways to deal with perspiration. Their Flawless Clear Crystal Gel srp. $4.29 2.7 oz. feels dry in seconds, and provides really good odor and wetness protection. A new, re-designed, dome-shaped applicator lets you apply the right amount to the right place. It has odor-capturing capsules that eliminate odor by “sensing” an imbalance in the body to know when to protect, and how much protection is needed. When you start to stress out, this product knows how to calm you (at least your underarm odor and wetness) and offers one of three scents,  or unscented, to keep you fresh for up to 24 hours.  I don't really know all the technical details, but it definitely, works!   I tried the  “Clearly Tropical" scent -- a fruity fresh scent that smelled strong going on, but evaporated fairly quickly. Secret Scent Expressions srp. $4.29 2.6 oz. is a solid stick deodorant that looks white but goes on clear and non-sticky. A little goes a long way, and you don’t have to settle for flowers or fruits with these products. There are 10 different scents to choose from in both the Secret Flawless Clear Crystal Gel and Secret Scent Expressions.  “Bella Bloom,” is a light floral that smells very much like some of the popular, department store quality fragrances out on the market.  Here's the Lineup: (in Invisible Solid): Bella Bloom, Coco Butter Kiss, Rockstar Rose, Truth or Pear, Wild Jasmine, Va Va Vanilla (In Crystal Clear Gel): Cherry Mischief, Fabulously Floral, Ooh La La Lavender, Pretty ‘n Peach, and Totally Tropical.

When I think of "soap," I generally think of a solid or liquid cleanser that you use to wash your skin, or clothes, or inanimate objects, so I was surprised to receive a soap for teeth!  First, I wondered  if it would taste like soap ( it doesn't, and there are are a number of flavors, all pleasant). Tooth Soap $24.95 *plus shipping and handling. Tooth Soap comes in a liquid (glass bottle with dropper) or solid (tiny shreds of a solid, waxy threads in a glass jar). Both foam and clean teeth when in contact with your saliva and a toothbrush.  They remove oils and other contaminants from teeth so that they can "re-mineralize" from nutrients in the diet. This is a unique product that we reviewed comprehensively on the Advice Sisters Blog--read the entire review

Whiter teeth make you look younger, but if you’re not forking over large sums of money for dentist or salon-style whitening treatments, you’re going to have to grapple with some of the problems the DIY kits have, such as unpleasant-tasting gels and whitening strips so large and bulky, you can barely talk. I’ve avoided DIY whitening until now, but Crest Advanced Seal Whitestrips $45.00/14 doses of whitening is so easy and comfortable to use, they’re a no-brainer.  I love these!  Easy, economical and they work. FASHION FOR SPRING:

A fun and unique way to express yourself, tell others how you feel, or stay on track with a goal with a self-affirmation, is with unique, Magnet House Jewelry from Marianne Richmond Studios.  Choose an Oblong or Square Pendant "frame" $14.95 on a 16",  silvery (keychain ball-style) chain, and, and then add one of a trio of Magnets. There is a little hole in the back of the pendant. Insert a paperclip into it, and pop out the old magnet and put a new one in, as you please!  The oblong pendant I received, in black and grey, featured the word: "Inspire" on one magnet; a white flower with the word "love"; and a breast cancer symbol with the word "survivor" in delicate script.  You can get individual magnets to add to your collection for $0.95 per magnet, or if you have access to soft magnets, you could possibly design your own!  The pendant is just a novelty piece, but  it's really sweet. I love the idea, and it's easy to change the sentiments with your moods or your goals. It's especially nice for anyone who wants to send someone a heartfelt but affordable, pick-me-up.

Twitter asks the question: "What Are you Doing?" but a bracelet $24.95 *plus shipping and handling developed by former yo-yo dieter Denyse Miskin, asks an even more interesting question: "Am I Hungry?" The attractive bracelet is cleverly composed of silvery, block-letter "baby beads" spelling out "Am I Hungry?" and the rest of the bracelet is made up of semi-precious gemstone beads. No two bracelets are exactly alike. The Advice Sisters' version was brown and silver, but it also is available in purple, and black. As a bonus, each bracelet comes with a Am I Hungry?® Tips wallet card.  The entire review and the tips are on the Advice Sisters Blog.

Next to trying on bathing suits, there's not other piece of clothing that makes even thin women feel insecure, as jeans. Although they are a staple in today's society, many women have a hard time finding jeans that fit their curves, feel comfortable, and actually look good. The Advice Sisters have just been introduced to a brand of jeans that are not only from Brazil, but actually fit real women: Beija-Flor Brazilian jeans! Yes, very good (and fashionable) things come from Brazil: supermodels, carnival, beaches, coffee (just to name a few)...and Beija-Flor jeans.  I have a hard time thinking that beautiful Brazilian women would be insecure about anything, but most women, even beautiful ones, struggle with jeans shopping (that's a fact)!  Read the Beija-Flor review on Advice Sisters Blog

Chicagoan Sarah Radford designs her jewelry collections from materials that excite her, such as semi-precious quartz, turquoise, labradorite, jasper, amethyst, pearl, glass, and acrylic. Her company, called Chic Gems, incorporates bright colors, eye catching neutrals and silver accents with clean lines and a sleek sense of style. For example, a modern take on the classic, "Breakfast at Tiffany’s" theme are these large, 16mm glass pearl earrings $25.00, capped with a small, flower-shaped silver rondelle, suspended from a slim, sterling silver ear wire. These are perfect for proms, for a bride, or her special attendants (and you can wear these, again, for sure!). Visit the Advice Sisters Blog to read the entire review.

Rachel Franco, creator and designer of JāLa Designs, produces interesting, unique jewelry. I'd expect no less from a company whose tagline is: "Be yourself and the rest will follow." The designer was initially inspired by a fabric-wrapped bowl. Something clicked and she thought "why not?" She decided that jewelry would look lovely wrapped in fabric. So in addition to traditional chain and semi-precious stones, Rachel incorporates designer fabrics, high-end ribbon, and other non-traditional materials. The sophisticated, unique pieces she creates communicate the originality and flair of the individuals wearing them. There are several different JāLa necklace and earring collections - Read all about them in the Advice Sisters Blog

I recently met color and style consultants Joe Lupo and Jesse Garza, both charming, talented men.  They've re-vamped the 4-season concept of color in a new book:  Life in Color: The Visual Therapy Guide to the Perfect Palette--for Fashion, Beauty, and You (Chronicle Books, 240 pages $24.95). Garza and Lupo provide color-averse (or clueless) readers not just a guide to finding and using their most flattering colors, but celebrity examples to demonstrate the various color types and style preferences.  If I wasn't already a certified color and image consultant, I'd find Garza and Lupo's book really fascinating (I admit, I already know a lot about color, so there weren't too many revelations in the book for me). But they've done a great job of modernizing the 4-color concept from "seasons"  (Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall) to (Sun, Moon, Star and Earth) and allowed for my variety in the color choices in each category. The glossy, coffee-table type book provides lots of illustrative, glossy photos of popular celebrities that look like they're out of a high-fashion magazine. A book is just a starting point when you are learning the finer points of color typing and style analysis. Consulting an expertt who uses fabric drapes and can really discern nuances in color and style, is still the best way to figure out what works for your coloring, body type, lifestyle, and fashion preferences (not to mention budget).  Still, since Jesse/Joe probably can't pop over and check out your closet, this book is a good starting point.

A true hourglass figure is one of the sexiest a woman can ask for, but if you have a slim waist and fuller hips and bottom, the quest for great fitting jeans can be a struggle.  PZI Jeans is a denim line that is designed to fit curvy women with slim waists. As with everything The Advice Sisters review, I tried these jeans for myself, up-close-and-personal. Although my figure isn't really an hourglass, I could easily see how PZI is tailor-made for it's audience. The style I tried was a classic, 5 pocket jean with a simple look and slightly flared leg that works for day or evening. It comes in a medium weight denim, in medium and dark blue denim. The fabric is really soft: 83% cotton, 15% polyester, and 2% spandex. The waistline fit snugly, but the hip and thigh area had a bit more room. Did you miss the PZI Jeans review on the Advice Sisters Blog? Read it now!

We're all on cell phones so much these days, it just makes sense to make it a fashion accessory.  If you want a quick and way to personalize your phone, and you aren't into "rhinestone-ing" Coveroo is a great choice!  Coveroo makes perfect-fit copies of  the back plates of most popular cell phones, but these are silver or black, red or beige, to coordinate seamlessly with your phone's color, and they're precision laser engraved with 250 cool designs. They have something for everyone,  from Mandalas to Marilyn Monroe, snowflakes to sports teams -- even comic book characters.  It's like a tattoo for your phone!  Read the entire Coveroo review on the Advice Sisters Blog

In these economic times, hand-washing instead of dry cleaning makes economic sense, but if you wash an item by hand, you have to press it. When an item has complicated tucks or embellishments, or it's made of a very delicate fabric, its challenging to do a  precise job, and you have to be careful not to burn or melt fabric and trim. Recently, a new appliance has come into my life that's made life easier and cheaper: the Conair Deluxe Fabric Steamer (srp. $99.00). This device not only saves you money and is convenient to use, it also can save your clothes and help the environment. The 1400-watt Conair Deluxe Fabric Steamer is so fabulous, it was named the exclusive garment steamer at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Fall 2009 Collections. You don't have to be Michael Kors or Diane Von Furstenberg to love, or own, a clothes steamer. This pro-style, steamer is for everyone. Roll it from room to room to freshen everything from clothes to curtains, to bedding. For the entire Conair Fabric Steamer Review, go to the Advice Sisters Blog.

Statement jewelry is a "must-have" for Spring 2009, but it needn't be expensive to make your entire outfit come alive.   Avon, known and loved for it's great skincare and trendy but affordable color cosmetics, also has accessories and clothes that help you look stylish, for a lot less.  The Advice Sisters reviewed several pieces for Spring that are "must-haves."  Read the entire review with more photos on the Advice Sisters Blog!

UNIQUE COSMETICS

Make-up Designory, a line of makeup created for a genuine make up school, has a quartet of eye shadows in a limited edition palette that helps you look good, feel good, and do good, too. The MUD Palette $25.00 offers 100% of the proceeds toward building a safe and sustainable home for children in Africa who have been orphaned by AIDS. The MUD Cares Palette of Eye Colors was hand-selected by members of NextAid to be universally flattering. They did a great job! "And I really love Make-Up Designory's quality products. They're richly pigmented, super-silky, blendable shadows that feel very luxurious. This particular palette features neutral earth tones that are classic four-season colors. My favorite is "Moss," a shimmery olive green with just enough gold shimmer to be glamorous.  There's also "Spanish Gold," a warm, coppery brown, "Dulce de Leche," a soft pink pearle, and "Cashmere," a soft beige perle.  The slim, pewter-colored cardboard compact with magnetic closure makes it travel-friendly, too. Byselling 1,000 pieces, MUD will fund one of the children’s homes on the site in Dennilton --get yours before they're all gone. Do something truly beautiful!

a jolt of color brings even simple fashions to life, and pops of color are must-haves for now through Fall. The C_Scope Collection by Vincent Longo offers three different products with big pops of a single color, to offer a striking, minimalist approach to face makeup. Longo melded creativity to technology, and came up with three, must-have products:   Vibrant Eye Waterproof Mascara, Vibrant Eye Waterproof Liner and Lip Vinyl. The colors are bright,  unusual, saturated, abd designed to evoke emotion.  For example, the color green is lively and symbolizes nature. "Verde" is a bright green Waterproof  Mascara $24.00 that matches the "Verdino" Waterproof Eye Liner $18.00.  You'll get Kermit-colored eyes, but they're fun, and the look, works.  Are you daring, energetic and expressive? Try "Giallo" a bright yellow mascara (I especially liked it, tips only, with the green mascara). The look is fresh and modern, but not crazy. There's a also "Vianco," a white mascara (symbolizes new and pure-ness);  blue, "Blu" (freshness and vitality), Brown 'Moreno" (security and harmony) and black, "Nerino".  If you're not willing to embrace color all the way the black or brown eye liner looks nice with or without colored mascara, or, perhaps with a vibrant lid color. The Advice Sisters didn't try it, but there is also a C_Scope Lip Vinyl $24.00 with reflective color in cool and warm peach, pinks, red, and brown. These are looks that color experts Joe Lupo and Jesse Garza would definitely embrace (see their Life In Color book above in this column).

M.A.C. Cosmetics has an exciting, new cream foundation  and a concealer that makes skin better than natural, but still, polished.  Two years in the making, the "proving ground" was backstage at Fashion Week, where some of the best makeup artists in the world used them to tweak products that would blend easily; provide a flawless, satiny finish, be quick drying; layerable, and also water resistant. The result is Studio Sculpt SPF 15 Foundation $28.00 and I'd say it was worth the wait!  The gel-based cream formula contains innovative, plant-based extracts that deliver a lightweight, flawless, medium-coverage. Micronized silicone coated pigments keep the foundation true to color --and there are a whopping 23 color choices! It's super-easy to blend it onto your skin with your fingertips, or use a makeup sponge or foundation brush for more professional results. It dries fast, but not so fast that you can work with it (and there's a concealer version, too).  One layer dulled redness, two really did cover it all!  Read the entire M.A.C. Studio Sculpt review on the Advice Sisters Blog.

Dimitri James puts quality into his Skinn cosmetics, not into advertising or fancy packaging. Another cost-saving strategy is that they are sold only through televised home shopping, the internet and exclusive, privately owned spas.  The products are truly good with long-lasting, blendable, fashionable colors that truly perform. One palette I like for Spring is the Skinn Sunny Days Blush & Blink Compact $28.00.  It's a simple, plastic compact with peek-a-boo clear top, interior mirror, plus a dual-ended mini brush/sponge applicator.  Inside are four , fairly intense, Italian baked eye shadows in very shimmery tones of soft gold, silver, bronze and copper, plus a super-silky, sheer, peachy blush. Even better, the products have collagen-boosting peptides to help your skin look better and be better!  If you want a new blush, how about an entire set of them? The Skinn Highlight, Blush, Bronze & Sculpt Compact $42.50 is a slim, shiny black compact with large interior mirror with six, large rounds of pressed powder and two mini brush applicators --everything you need to contour and color your face. The compact comes with a how-to guide. Even if the contouring trend isn't one you're embracing, the three, universally flattering coral/peach blushes in light, medium and bright, and the bronzer, are worth the price of the palette.

Chanel is always a leader in trendy, sophisticated, and wearable fashion. Their Spring 2009 Makeup collection features a lovely, "boho" vibe inspired by gypsy dresses, and featuring bold contrasts: nudes and earth tones with bold reds and deeper tones. The compacts, of course, feature Chanel's iconic, shiny black cases with their white, crossed C's logo--always a bonus.  But makeup is the main reason you'll love this collection. The Advice Sisters have a reviewed a number of pieces that we think you'll want to own. Get the lowdown on Chanel's latest on the Advice Sisters Blog

I love colored pencils, especially the makeup kind. You can "draw" with them, and they're so easy to work with. Some good ones are the Custom Blend Lip and Eye Pencils  $25.00/each by Giella.  They offer soft, blendable color, and you can actually custom blend them right at the makeup counter in about 5 minutes!  A specially-designed molding machine about the size of a pocket camera fills the pencil barrels with the all-natural ingredients,  including a natural, vegetable-based emollient and pigments that are paraben free and not tested on animals. After you select your color, you have some decisions to make: should you leave the pencil matte, or add shimmer in gold, silver, copper or bronze, plus maybe one of several conditioners? You can also custom blend lip glosses, adding shimmer or glitter, and/or one of four conditioners (grapeseed oil, kukui nut, Vitamin E or matte/oil control), and choose from 10 scents including bubblegum, eucalyptus, and apple. Then, you get to decide whether or not you want your gloss in a wand or a tube. Giella Lipsticks $27.00 are of the highest quality, even though the packaging is a simple, matte silver tube. Choose your color in matte, cream, sheer, or shimmer formulas. Have it unscented or scented with aromatherapy (lavender, vanilla, peppermint, orange, apple or cinnamon) and with color selections in pink, neutral, peach/orange, plum, red/coral and brown are grouped in light, medium, deep and golden tones and you can control the intensity of color.  Kukui oil can be added for hydration and if you want it to last even longer, add a matte extender. Giella also has non-custom, neutral shades. The pencils are everything you've ever wanted, and portable, too. "A  Lip Pencil in "Cherrywood," for example, is a deep, rich, matte perfect for a dramatic liner, or bold lip color. The color is very long lasting, yet this chunky pencil glides on smoothly and blends without cracking, chipping, or leaving gaps. I added my favorite Giella Lip Gloss $27.00  in a rosed-red unceremoniously called: "LGW62"  to add shine.  The luxurious Lipstick I tried was moistly-matte, a rosed brown called "LC1062" .Eye Pencils are equally good.  I tried an intense pencil called 'Fig," a charcoal-brown that makes blue eyes seem brighter and larger. Then I smoothed on some of Giella's Eye Shadow $22.00 in "Rustic," a silky, semi-shimmery, intense powder shadow in a deep copper, and lined my eyes with "Chambord," a deep wine. Giella Custom Blend Cosmetics can also color match discontinued products. Pre-blended or custom, all are worth the cost.

The Spring lineup of cosmetics from Clinique has a clever, all-in one blush that I have named my newest "must-have" and I used it throughout Fashion Week in NYC.  This new, Quick Blush $21.50 is a blush and brush housed in one silvery tube.  No need to replace your blush brush or carry a bulky favorite around, anymore!  Simply swivel the brush end against it's color-coded, blush laden, top while it's closed, and as you twist,  the brush extends into the top, picking up just the right amount of velvety, powder blush. The four, sheer tones add a natural, healthy glow to cheeks: "Hurry Honey" (nude); "Peach-in-a-Pinch" (tawny); "Minute Mocha" and "Pronto Pink" (pinks) and two violets: "In-A-Rush Blush" and "Berry on Time." Like all of Clinique's makeup brushes, anti-bacterial technology that makes it not just easier, but healthier,  to use. Film forming polymers in the blush also keep skin healthy as well as pretty. These Clinique products are allergy-tested, 100% fragrance and oil-free, and sweat and humidity resistant. More Spring looks from Clinique include the limited edition, floral-themed, Fresh Bloom Eye Shadows $16.50. These pressed powder shadow duos are gorgeous, embossed with a delicate flower  (also found on Clinique's Fresh Bloom Allover Colour Palette) and come in four colors: "Maple Blossom" (dove & charcoal grey); "Cherry Blossom" (light & dark pink); "Tiger Lily" (light & dark mauve); and  "Apple Blossom" (light & dark mint green). They're sheer and layerable.  Add more drama with the new, High Impact Curling Mascara (photo) that the Advice Sisters recently blogged about.

Lipstamp $24.95 is one of those products that you never thought you needed, until you see it and think: "how clever!" It helps you apply lipstick in one of eight, precise shapes in a way you could never accomplish with a pencil or brush. The plastic base with oval mirror is the anchor for one the sponge, lip-shaped forms. A  peel on/off adhesive backing keeps them anchored. Using this is as easy as child's play: The concept is a grown-up version of the potato stamps you probably carved in elementary school arts & crafts class!  A stamp is just something that leaves an impression. This one helps you create lips shapes that would be extremely difficult to re-create on your own -- and the result will definitely leave an impression on your adoring fans!  *Read the entire Lipstamp review on the Advice Sisters Blog.

I adore Rock & Republic makeup, for it's sexy vibe, regal compacts (featuring silver and black patent leather accents) and trendy, wearable colors. One of the most important parts of the Rock & Republic Spring 2009 look is a Tinted Illuminizer in one of four shades. I tried "Eve," the lightest, but the shades are so sheer you can play with the color, a bit. The product leaves a subtle but perceptible, luminous glow, thanks to light-diffusing polymers and oil-absorbing properties. Blend some down the bridge of your nose to make it look that much more perfect, and dab some underneath your eyebrow arches to make eyes "pop."  Dab it onto your cheekbones to make your complexion more dewy and make your cheekbones look more sculpted. While most cosmetics companies are treating Spring makeup as a chance to show bright pastels, Rock & Republic is sticking with it's rock-star sensibilities, offering smoky eye looks and bold lips.  Saturate Eye Shadow in "Fatalistic," for example, is an intense, super-silky, very inky, moistly-matte charcoal. You can make it wild, or mild, depending upon how much you blend it out. The color is very long lasting and a superb, creaseless formula,  stays put until you’re ready to take it off. Make your eyes smolder without fear of smudging!  Rock & Republic's newest trendy Luxe Lip Gloss $16.00 color is called "Tyrant." It arrives in a wanded,  "test-tube." This is a sexy, deep berry,  but, like the creamy eye shadows, you can play with the color to make it mild, or wild.  One blended-out swipe makes a pretty lip stain, but it becomes vixen-y and highly pigmented with more layers. Good-for-your-lips Vitamin A renews skin cells and Vitamin E fights free radicals. Your lips will feel as pretty as they look!

Bobbi Brown's new Creamy Lip Color $22.00 does a lot more than just look good. These creamy lip colors feature soft, rich color, that feels like silk on your lips. They have pampering, soothing, emollient Shea Butter and skin conditioner that actually improve your skin, not just sit on it!  I've always been a huge fan of Bobbi Brown's lip products. I love their high quality, high performance, and of course, great colors that look natural, but better! There are four new ones for right now throughSummer: Retro Pink, Rose Brown, Coral Pink, and Pale Mauve. As with most of Bobbi Brown's color choices, these are fairly soft. Retro Pink, for example, is a sheer blush pink for your lips that works almost like a soft blush would on your cheeks, boosting your own coloring up just a notch, with a hint of tint. Rose Brown is a universally flattering color that adds a bit more intensity,  but still won't look too obvious or overpower a natural look. Coral Pink is slightly brighter, Pale Mauve, more subdued. Get the entire Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Color review on the Advice Sisters Blog.

Dior ha some great, new cosmetics to help you transition from Winter to Spring and Summer!  For example, Skin Forever Nude $42.00 is high performance, lightweight,  moisturizing mineral foundation.  The feature ingredient is mineralized active water containing Rhodolite (a semi-precious stone that helps aid in skin cell turnover); Sensiline, derived from flax (protects against UVA rays); Sericin, derived from silk (regulates hydration in the skin ), plus Vitamins C&E.  I've never been a big fan of loose powder minerals because they can be challenging to use, but this foundation is in a liquid form, in a stay-clean, easy to use, attractive pump bottle. There are a dozen shades from Ivory to Deep Brown with choices for neutral, pink and yellow undertones. The look is natural, but flawless and not shimmery, but glowing.  If you love mineral makeup but not the mess, and you want something truly special, try this one. Dior Bronze Original Tan $42.00, Dior Bronze Collagen-Active Smooth Protection Bronzer $48.00, and Dior Bronze Harmony Blush $42.00 will give you the golden glow you seek in a bronzing compact. The first two are sheer and layerable, four colors, offering believable, flawless, great-looking coverage with good-for-your-skin benefits. The latter is a multi-colored blush that magically adds warmth. Read all about these DIOR products in greater detail on the Advice Sisters Blog.  For Spring, a must-have is a new, Dior Addict Lipcolor Lipstick $26.00. I love regal, dark blue lipstick compact with shiny gold "knob" tube. Inside, the lipsticks have been improved with an exclusive "Lip Neutralizer Complex " that immediately neutralizes the color of your own lips, so that your lipstick stays true to it's original color.  These luxuriously silky, creamy, long lasting and moisturizing products literally glide onto your lips like lingerie. It's a lipstick to fall in love with, or love more (if you're already a fan).  Among the new shades are "Spotlight Violet #983," a glamorous, slightly shimmery, cool magenta; "Rose Lingerie #323"  (soft rosy mauve); and "Infamous Pink #623," a creamy, deep mauved-plum.

The only thing better than a lip gloss, is two--in one package!  That's the idea behind L'Oreal Paris Color Presso $12.99 The egg-shaped plastic lip gloss compact has two clear tubes, joined together with an applicator with two small holes. Each compact has a light and a dark color, to wear alone (by squeezing just one side of the tube) or together,  (by squeezing the two sides, together). The glosses are glossy and sheer and shimmery, and smell like vanilla. "#480 Snazzy" pairs a soft peach with a glowing rose. "#380 Fashionista" pairs a shimmery beige with a deep wine and "#180 Swanky" pairs a candy pink with a beige gloss, both shot through with gold shimmer. The versatility and travel-friendly packaging makes these a Spring "must-have." For eyes, Kohl is a must-have trend. Get it with L'Oreal Paris, Le Kohl Duo Shadow & Liner $10.95. The dual-ended wand is super-portable--slim enough to tote in your makeup pouch. It's got a sponge-tipped applicator on one end that picks up a pretty, blendable, long-lasting, pressed powder eye shadow from the cap. The other end has a soft, blendable, kohl pencil in a complimentary, smudge-resistant color to line thin or thick, smudged or not. There are four duos: Black Liner/Vanilla Shadow; Black-Brown Liner/Hazelnut Shadow ; Charcoal Liner/Honey Shadow and Bronze-Brown Liner/Buttercup Shadow. If you prefer classic, loose powder, L'Oreal Paris Kohl Eyeliner $13.00 comes in a translucent vial with built-in thin-line brush. The velvety powder is exceptional, and makes a soft line in black, brown, navy, teal, burgundy and gold.  "#203 Teal" is unusual and modern, without gaudy.

Zana Cosmetics, new to our reviews this time, is a pretty surprise, with it's extra-pigmented, extra-long lasting colors. The mineral-based products paraben-free, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and never tested on animals. The formulas are gentle to the skin, and full of vitamins and anti-oxidants. The Kiss My Lips Satin Lip Color $13.00 is was packaged in a pink white, grey and black box with bold graphics and the statement: "speak your mind, silence is the real crime against humanity." A powerful statement for a lipstick!  Inside, a black and clear lipstick tube is decorated with hot pink metallic accents. "Rose Wild" was an intense, moistly-matte rosewood that would flatter just about any complexion. In all, there are ten shimmer and creamy colors, created with vitamins and antioxidants, and good-for-your-skin ingredients like sunflower, jojoba and wheat germ oils, and aloe vera and chamomile. If you want to try Zana Cosmetics,  go to the web site and contact an authorized Zena representative, or find a salon that carries these special products.

India is known not just for it’s bustling cities and beautiful monuments, but also for a profusion of bright colors: oranges, yellows, vibrant reds, hot pink, gold, silver, emeralds and sapphires. These bright colors were seen all over the Spring runways and are absolutely trendy. Givenchy has captured some of the life and beauty of India and it’s glamorous Bollywood films, in a new Spring-Summer 2009 makeup collection by Nicholas Degennes, featuring two color harmonies: pink, and orange, with gold and silver that flatter warm and cool, deep and fair skin tones, like a sunlight, or a sunset. When you open these products, you can’t help wanting to play with the color. Read about the Givenchy Spring-Summer 2009 collection and see all the photos on the Advice Sisters Blog.

FANTASTIC FRAGRANCES

As teenagers, my sister and I would go to the beauty department at Abraham & Strauss and salivate over makeup and fragrance our meager allowances couldn't afford. But the sales lady on Saturdays at the Shiseido counter was a kindly soul who could see a beauty expert in the making. She'd fill my pockets with Shiseido samples, including their original, signature, Zen fragrance (launched in 1964,  and a second Zen scent in 2000). Now Shiseido third ZEN incarnation has been created by perfumer Michel Almairac. This exciting, modern version made me fall in love with ZEN all over again. The newest scent is modern--more woodsy and more floral than oriental. It's light (but not too light--it has staying power) with notes of grapefruit, bergamot, peach, pineapple, blue rose, freesia, gardenia, red apple, violet, lily of the valley, hyacinth, rose, lotus flower, patchouli, cedar, musk, white musk, amber, incense and marine plant. It's the kind of scent that gave me an  immediate "wow" feeling! In April, Shiseido adds Zen Perfumed Shower Gel $35.00 6.7 fl. oz. and Zen Perfumed Body Cream $58.00 6 .7 oz. The Shower Gel delights with a nice lather that leaves skin soft and clean, while gently exfoliating some of those icky, dry skin cells. You can even use it as a bubble bath and/or fragranced hair shampoo. The Zen Perfumed Body Cream is everything you'd want from a luxe moisturizer. It is a wonderfully emollient product, but feels light and fluffy, never oily or greasy. Both products will leave your skin lightly,  deliciously scented with Zen.

I am a real fan of rollerball packaging. it's easy and clean to apply, quick and sanitary, and so portable. That's only one reason to like Fragrance by Caroline Chu $32.00 .36 fl. oz.  This highly concentrated scent screams: "I'm a woman!"  It's a powdery floral with a theme of exotic roses and lilies, subdued just a bit by sandalwood and musk, and balanced with a clean hit of spring rain and dewy moss. Just a touch of the rollerball in all the right places is an invitation to seduction. I'm not really a rose fan, but if you are, this lovely and affordable scent is going to be your next signature favorite! *our review of Caroline Chu Shower Gel and Body Lotion is in the "Bath and Body" section, right hand side of this page.

Sharon Bolton's web site sells beautiful sarongs, jewelry, bath and body products, and candles, but she also has a some very unique scents. All her products are made in the USA and  are cruelty and phthalate free, with 1005 recyclable packaging. The Sharon Bolton Perfume Oils $42.00 1/8 oz. are made from natural essential oils infused with exotic florals, sparkling citrus, and tropical fragrances.  Her latest, called "Dream"  is a lovely, floriental blend of bergamot, white freesia, mimosa with accords of amber, sandalwood and exotic musk.  I can't stop sniffing the spicy, sexy, and long lasting scent. Each little bottle is packaged in a white satin drawstring pouch embroidered with the Sharon Bolton logo, and two  little "treasures" attached to the drawstrings: a pearl and either a 24kt gold dipped maile leaf, a 24kt gold dipped sand dollar or the one we received--a seashell rimmed in gold) attached to the drawstrings.  I also love, Truth, a lemon-line that is balanced with a hint of exotic floral and an airy, sheer musk.  This one is tangy, young, lively and uplifting.  There's also Luv  (a feminine blend of rare pink gardenia, lush Hawaiian white flowers, with hints of vanilla and musk) and Soul - (a gourmand scent featuring papaya, pineapple, coconut and a hint of musk) These scents are distinctive and exciting, and very, very good. Pick the scent that suits the category of fragrance you like the most, and you'll be hooked.

The new Diesel Fuel for Life Unlimited 458.00 5 ML $78.00 75 ml  is one of those fragrances that delights, because it defies classic categorization.  It's sparkling, lively, spicy, and fruity-- I would call it a "florfuritiental!"  It starts with notes of Calabrian lemon and mandarin orange lighting up the top, followed by pear and guava. Unusual and sensual is a heat of licorice and sweet aniseed with notes of violet, and a bunch of white flowers: tuberose, jasmine, and spicy Casablanca lilies. All of this razzle-dazzle eventually blows off in the drydown to reveal the balancing, bottom notes of sandalwood, cedar, musk, labdanum and peach. Once these unique ingredients blend together, what you end up with is a soft, sexy, come-closer-and-smell me scent that’s very pleasing. Diesel Fuel for Life Unlimited is housed in a glass bottle branded with a gold inscription and wrapped in a gold-flecked woven brown net adorned with a golden chain. It will delight an unlimited audience of younger women who want something fresh and new, and their trendy, young-at-heart mothers,  who also want to feel (and smell), fashionable.

Avant-garde perfumery is the most wonderful discovery for those who are willing to try something new and exciting. But merely being “different” doesn’t mean that the result will be something you’ll want to douse your body with. The unique scents created self-taught botanical perfumer, and founder of Strange Invisible Perfumes, Alexandra Balahoutis offer different but delightful, delicious, opulent options. A trio of floral scents debuts this March: Aquarian Rose; Urban Lily, and Epic Gardenia each srp. $175.00 1.7 fl. Oz.; Parfum 0.25 fl. oz $210.00. The scents are evocative of the flower as the designer views them. The *Strange, Invisible Perfumes also has a new bath and body line. I loved the silky Body Lotion $40.00 8.0 fl. oz. and a Life-Changing Body Wash $35.00 8.0 fl. oz. These are not your usual scents.  They're quite complex, so I described the unique qualities in a  Blog Post about SIP on the Advice Sisters Blog.

Bermuda is known for beaches with pink sand so fine, it almost feels like talcum powder. It’s also known as one of the most popular honeymoon destinations. In short,  Bermuda is a romantic paradise. Now, the spirit of this beautiful island is captured in a new fragrance by Michael Kors, called: "Island Michael Kors Bermuda." $62.00 1.7 fl. Oz, Body Lotion $28.00 5.0 fl. Oz, and a Lip Gloss $12.00. The Advice Sisters didn't see the fragrance in final packaging, but the photo shows the scent in a low, chunky rectangle of clear pink, layered glass (reminiscent of the pink sand beaches) with gold highlights on the logo plaque decorating the side of the bottle’s cap. The scent itself is fairly fresh light and very wearable for day or evening. The  key notes are freesia, native hibiscus, pink peony, jasmine sambac, and the aura of driftwood paired with warm cedarwood. It is ladylike and romantic, but still more clean than sweet. It would make the perfect getaway or honeymoon fragrance. The Body Lotion is exceptional. It's  extremely light and very easily absorbed. Your skin will feel  very silky and hydrated. The scent in the body lotion is enough to leave a light veil of fragrance, and it’s long lasting. It's just, lovely!

BATH AND BODY HELPERS

Most people love the scent of vanilla, but they don't want to smell like an ingredient for cookies! A sophisticated vanilla that doesn’t smell cloyingly sweet is the new version by Bath & Bodyworks. Vanilla Noir, from their Signature Collection. Their set of fragranced bath products, mixes Madagascar Vanilla bean with black plum, bergamot, orange, and warm musk. You can recognize and smell the vanilla, but the mélange of fruits and musk make it softer, warmer, more wearable. If you treat yourself to the Shower Gel 10 fl. oz. (With soothing and moisturizing oils and aloe vera) or the creamy, emollient Body Lotion 8 fl. oz. (With aloe vera, grape seed extract and vitamins C and E) it will only set you back $10.50. These products come in slightly curvy plastic bottles with attractive, silvery, flip-top caps so you can use them safely in bath and shower. There are a dozen different products in the Vanilla Noir line including everything from Eau de Toilette, to candles. For more Bath and Bodyworks reviews, visit the 'WHAT WORKS" ARCHIVES .

When your skin is dry, it's really important to exfoliate it. But it's bad to exfoliate without re-hydrating your skin! Avon's Skin So Soft Fusions Dual Softening Body Wash $6.50  6.7 fl. oz.  multi-tasks, with an affordable, effective body wash that cleanses, exfoliates and moisturizes all in one. The lightly scented body wash feels silky even though it contains little "smoothbrasion: beads that help gently slough off dead, dry skin cells. My skin felt soft and smooth after using it, but thanks to the ultra-conditioning agents in this product, my skin also continued to feel smoother and softer the next day--pretty nifty!  I tried the "Renew & Refresh" formula, with a green floral scent with lily petals and roses.  The scent was nice in the shower, but quickly dissipated so it didn't compete with my favorite perfume.  There's also "Light & Lush" (a light citrus with lemon and grapefruit) and "Soft & Sensual" (with rose, jasmine and ylang ylang).  TIP:  His skin gets dry, too...I'd leave the citrus-y "Light & Lush" in the shower where it's accessible --he'll be tempted to try it.

I'm sure my first introduction to Johnson's products was as a baby, and when I think of Johnson's products, I think of comforting staples such as body oil and powder.  Johnson's ® Body Care has wide line of body basics help to smooth and hydrate skin with immediate and longer-lasting results, and with pleasant fragrances and aromatherapy bennies. These are for adults. If you haven't considered products like baby oil and baby powder, now is a good time to  check, them out, again. The Advice Sisters were totally impressed with the quality and variety of  the Johnson's Body Care line. Read the review on the Advice Sisters Blog.

I love the scent of lemon, especially when I really need something more than coffee to get me going. Tea Tree Lemon Sage Energizing Body Lotion $12.95 6.8 fl. oz. by Paul Mitchell, in a  flip-top tube, smells like a zesty lemon drop. It's full of nourishing, moisturizing, Buriti fruit oil  and tea-tree oil that invigorates your skin.  We didn't try it, but we'd also recommend the companion Body Wash $9.95 6.8 fl. oz. With these two, you're sure to start the day, smiling. Even better, Paul Mitchell Tea Tree has a partnership with American Forests, an international non-profit organization dedicated to a healthier environment. Paul Mitchell products fun the planting of enough trees through American Forest to offset all carbon emissions from the brand's manufacture and distribution.  A portion of all Tea Tree product sales also fund American Forests Global ReLeaf and Wildfire RelLeaf programs to help preserve our natural resources at home and abroad. *see our "Hair Helpers" section for more Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Lemon Sage products.

As I was sitting down to right a review of Clear Prep $38.00 1 fl. oz.  I realized I'd just broken out!  I was happy to learn that this clear gel fights the four main causes of acne: hyperseborrhea (excess oil); Hyperkeratosis (thickening of the skin), inflammation, and the proliferation of bacteria. It is a foundation primer that locks makeup onto your skin with “Dermaveil technology” (a proprietary complex that reduces the appearance of fine lines and pores) that helps makeup glide on smoothly and keeps skin looking more matte. This product doesn’t just make your foundation look better and last longer, it's a great multi-tasker. The key ingredients are 1% salicylic acid (less than the 1.5 % in most teen treatments but still enough to handle adult breakouts); willowbark extract (kills bacteria associated with the formation of acne, exfoliates, and encourages cell renewal); Matrixyl 3000 (proven to help reduce wrinkle depth and volume and offer a smoothing, lifting effect), a cocktail of other good-for-your-skin vitamins and ingredients that work to enhance the look and feel of your skin, and a concentrated blend of botanical extracts that sound more like the yummy ingredients in dessert (sugar maple, bilberry, lemon, sugar cane, and orange)  to smooth and rejuvenate your skin! Apply this product a couple of times a day for  better looking, zit-free skin –a little goes a long --the  investment will pay off!

Why just burn a candle, when you can also do something great for your body?  The Scandle Body Massage Candle $21.95 10 oz. is a fragrant hand-poured body massage candle.  It melts at 2 degrees above body temperature to produce a soothing and healthy body/massage oil that has moisturizing shea butter, Vitamin E, jojoba and soy butter.   It's the perfect companion for a spa night or romantic night for two. The large Scandle comes in an attractive, re-usable  (Refills $9.95 - $10.95) ceramic container with pour spout.  The candle will burn 30-50 hours.  However, for those who just want a smaller and super-affordable version, there's the  Travel Tin $12.95 4 oz. The off-white candle comes with a rubberized orange band around it  (doubles as a bracelet if you wish).  I tried "Calming," that smelled wonderfully of relaxing lavender. There's also Uplifting, Sensual,  Healing and Detoxifying scents. I've seen other wax-as-massage candles, but these are particularly nice. If you want something unusual to try out with someone special, or you're just the type that just can't keep hands out of the candle wax, Scandle Body Massage Candles are a great choice. Even if there's no romance in your life right now, you can pamper yourself and use the moisturizing, Vitamin E infused wax,  as a soothing treatment for hands and feet!

Caroline Chu, new to our review this column, creates innovative, luxurious products centered on overall well - being. Using the highest quality natural ingredients available, her products  are created for women of all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles, to help them feel confident and empowered. The Advice Sisters tried two bath/body products: Caroline Chu Shower Gel  $18.00 11.8 fl. oz and Caroline Chu Moisturizing Body Lotion $18.00 11.8 fl. oz.   The packaging is elegant, minimalistic, and nicely unisex: clear, smoke-grey plastic bottles with black pump tops.  I also like the fact that the Caroline Chu web site offers a list of all the ingredients in her products, so you can decide whether they're right for you. The Shower Gel, infused with chamomile, offers a mild, not very foamy cleanser, that's  enriched with vitamins and soothing aloe vera -- good for all skin types.  There isn't a loud, "smell me!" moment. and it provides a spa-style experience for every member of the family. The  Moisturizing Body Lotion  also absorbs quickly and leaves the lightest hint of a fresh, floral scent behind, along with smoother, hydrated skin.  This lovely lotion has natural plant extracts help tone, firm, and revitalize  (use it when your skin is damp, after showering, for best effect).  It's also Infused with aloe, Vitamins E, A, C, and B5  to help nourish. Your entire family will like it!

SKINCARE HELPERS

Pur Minerals Correcting Primer $29.50 is one of those products you don’t really how much you need, until you try it.  It’s a lightweight, nearly sheer, silky gel type primer in a pump bottle that goes on under your foundation (or on bare skin) to make your skin look nearly flawless and help your makeup stay put. I LOVE these See a thumbs-up review  of Pur Minerals Correcting Primer on the AdviceSisters Blog.

Facial redness is not a chic look, yet plenty of people suffer from this skin condition that hard to conceal. You either look like you're wearing a mask, or you end up with blotchy skin showing through the cover-ups. Clinique is helping to solve the problem with a new product called Redness Solutions Instant Relief Mineral Powder $32.50.  he generously sized jar of loose, natural powder minerals, is a soft, creamy yellow, that neutralizes the look of redness.  The product contains a patent-pending complex rich in natural, anti-irritants, suitable for even the most sensitive skin (even for those with Rosacea). The key ingredients include caffeine and extracts of magnolia bark, poria cocos (mushroom), and grapefruit that work to visibly calm redness. Calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium help absorb excess oil, and Vitamin E  (antioxidant) is also included. The included,  swivel-up brush,  is the size of a lipstick tube, and it has Clinique's unique, antibacterial technology that helps protect the brush from developing mold, fungus and bacteria. You can use this allergy tested, 100% fragrance, talc and oil-free, non acegenic powder with or without makeup. If you lightly dust it on, the effect is subtle. Apply more under makeup, and it really is remarkable. If your skin is ruddy or you have rosacea, you'll consider this a miracle, must-have!

Unless you have unusually flawless, smooth skin, your makeup will never look absolutely perfect without a good face primer. A great new one is Prescriptives Flawless Face Primer $27.50 that helps smooth out and even out the texture of your skin. It'll help your makeup look more flawless, and it also provides a base for it to adhere to, so it'll last longer. This primer is super light–you’ll quickly forget you even used it.  However, you'll notice that your skin looks great, and then you'll remember: thanks go to Prescriptives!  I used to think that primers were not really necessary,  but once I realized how much better they make my skin look, and how they boost the performance of foundation and tinted moisturizers, I became a believer.  Maybe you don't need to use a makeup primer on a casual weekend, but it's a must-have when you want to look your best. This  Prescriptives primer is a serious multi-tasker. The silky lotion also helps to diminish the appearance of large pores, lines and wrinkles, redness and discoloration. It's oil- free and visibly calms and soothes your skin while it reduces excess oil. For a product that will help your foundation stay-put, look great, and provide overall skin benefits, you can’t beat this one.

Diorsnow Sublissime skincare is an innovative, whitening and brightening range that brightens skin by generating white skin cells. The technicalities are a bit complicated, but basically, Dior employs two key technologies: Pro-Active Brightening Regulator (PABR), a breakthrough technology in brightening science; and the combination of JDEline (a yeast extract that reinforces the dermal-epidermal junction of the skin) and E-Cadherine-accel (a protein which has an accelerated action against spots).  DiorSnow Whitening Spot Reducer $45.00 .13 fl. oz. is a fresh, light gel with a creamy texture comes in a clean, pen format that you apply on dark spots. The active ingredient is Lightenine, an anti-oxidant with anti-inflammatory properties that is a melanin fighter (melanin is a pigment that affects skin, eye, and hair color in humans and other mammals. It is produced by melanocytes, which are found in the bottom layer of the skin's epidermis). When applied locally to dark spots on your skin, this seemingly simple (but obviously not), powerful product works to continue the overall brightening effect of the other ingredients and other products in the DiorSnow Sublissime line, from cleansers to foundations. If you want  whitening products, you can't go wrong with these. They're effective, and also well priced.

When most of us think of acne treatments, we think of a cream, lotion or potion we apply to the affected areas. However,  Ifrenel  $24.95/24 packets is a kaolin clay and salicylic acid based cleanser in single-dose, powder packets. These packets are intriguing because they don't just cover up a zit. They cleanse, protect and cover skin with natural mineral ingredients and 1.5% salicylic acid (encapsulated in corn starch to provide a slow release of the ingredient). Rub the product dry onto your face and then wash it off. Oil and dirt are draw up and held in the clay via capillary action, while salicylic acid helps exfoliate to reduce existing breakouts and prevent new ones. This product also helps smooth your skin and reduce the production of oil, so your skin stays less oily and keeps your foundation from spot breakthroughs, too. Ifrenel is not as economical as a large bottle of zit cream, but dry packets are very portable. You can carry several week's worth and not add weight or worry that they will leak in your bag or be confiscated at the airport. Instead of using your regular cleanser in the morning, snap open one of the single-use packets and pour the powder into your hand. Gently apply it dry to your entire face, even the parts without any breakouts (avoid eyes and lips), Then just rinse the powder off with water. This one-step, rinse-off treatment will help make your skin smoother and less oily, too! Its non-irritating and preservative free, and clinically tested with an allergy tested formula. Most people will need just one packet a day, but you can use it twice a day. It may be a bit harsh for people with very dry skin (use an oil-free moisturizer only if dryness occurs) but for convenience,  effectiveness, a natural product, and a more pleasurable way to deal with acne, Ifrenel is definitely well worth the cost.

If you want to make younger skin last, look to Bliss, and Peeling Groovy $65.00 1. fl. oz. while you're sleeping. This amazing, retexturizing solution-formerly known as "Sleeping Peel Serum" is sure to continue to be a gigantic hit for Bliss, once again. The clear serum in a glass pump jar works hard while you're sleeping to help perfect the texture of your skin; reduce the look of  fine lines and large pores, and lighten blemishes and sun-damaged spots for smoother, younger,  looking skin. While Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) is the gold standard for this type of exfoliating skin treatment, it can also be supremely irritating to sensitive skin. Peeling Groovy's serum has  kinder to skin, gentler,   FAs (filaggrin-based amino acid antioxidants).  As a beauty reviewer for more than a decade and one with very sensitive skin,  I cautiously applied Peeling Groovy to the backs of my hands, before putting it on my face.  There was a slight tingle.  I waited for my skin to get red and blotchy...but it didn't happen!  Encouraged,I tried it on my face for a few days.  I initially thought that since it didn't burn my skin like the AHAs, it might not do anything much to retexture my skin. I can't use anything for every long since I'm always trying new things, but the few days I used this product really did help to make my complexion smoother and brighter--and all I had to do is apply it and get some beauty rest. Maybe Bliss should just call it: "Sleeping Beauty!"

Auriderm from Biopelle, Inc. a Ferndale Pharma group Company is new to our reviews this column. Their products feature Vitamin K Oxide, a more stable form of Vitamin C that help reduce bruising by helping the body to re-absorb a substance in our blood called “hemosiderin.” Hemosiderin or haemosiderin is degraded ferritin, and can appear as an abnormal microscopic pigment found in the human body. When hemosiderin is injured, it is responsible for the stain or discoloration of tissue around the site of an injury. The body will eventually re-absorb some, or all of the stain, but it takes a long time.  Auridern goes to work when the blood vessels (or even tiny capillaries) are broken due to a variety of causes including deep cosmetics filler injections or other procedures.  I tried the Illume Eye Cream $50.00 15 .5 oz. in a travel-friendly tube. The unscented cream slides on easily, and helps treat discoloration under the eyes It also has ingredients to reflect light and reduce puffiness.  I used it for a few days, and saw moderately good results, so I'm assuming with regular use, this one would work quite well.  I also tried the citrus-y smelling Auriderm Clearing Gel $40.00 1 oz. The gel with 2% Vitamin K Oxide felt cool and a bit tingly on my skin.  Applied twice a day (morning and evening) the product helps to reduce the appearance of spider veins. It also repairs and rebuilds vascular and capillary walls to help prevent further spider vein, with promising results. The products are a bit pricey, but if you suffer from these conditions, it’s a small price to pay for relief. These products should be effective, but there isn't any website for Auriderm and I couldn't get a lot of information about how to use them.  Auriderm is available from Physicians offices, however, so ask your doctor.

Dry,, sensitive skin...what a drag!  Regular cleansers and moisturizers may have irritating ingredients that only add to the problem, but you’ve got to do something to help your skin. CeraVe by Coria Laboratories, Ltd. is a line of skin care products that was developed specifically to help dry, sensitive skin. A patented “MVE” technology releases various ingredients in a controlled way over a period of time, allowing skin to be hydrated long and more efficiently. Since this is a line for sensitive skin, the ingredients are free of fragrances, harsh chemicals and propylene glycol and detergents that can make a person with sensitive skin rue the day they tried that product!  I tried the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream $14.99 16 oz. The jar is plain white plastic, but the product inside is special: loose, white, unscented cream pampers dry, sensitive skin, sensibly. Nourishing ceramides, Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, water and fatty acid esters are released (through that MVE technology) deep into the skin, to provide a pampering, nourishing, deeply hydrating treatment that won’t irritate even the most sensitive skin.  It is easily absorbed and totally non greasy.  It isn't a sexy product but it works.

I am a real fan of Biotherm's skin care products. They're great quality, feature cutting-edge ingredients, and they work! Two new products for the face help dry and stressed out skin: Multi Recharge Daily Super Hydrator for Exhausted Skin $37.00 1.69 fl. oz., and Aquasource Micro-Fine Super Serum $36.00 1.69 fl. oz. The Multi Recharge Daily Super Hydrator for Exhausted Skin has a long name, but, in short, it is a soothing, moisture-packed treat for parched skin that's exhausted. You already know what an exhausted person looks like.  Maybe you're feeling a bit tired, even as you're reading this!  When you're tired, your skin shows it. This product helps to re-energize your skin, and it's not just a pick-me-up, but one that's packed with moisture, too! The cheerful, orange and white pump bottle dispenses this amazing "SOS" (save our skin) product with ginseng (for energy) and a lot of good-for-your-skin ingredients. The light lotion feels cool and even a bit invigorating as you apply it, and quickly dissolves into your skin to leave it feeling (and looking) like it's just had it's morning coffee! You can see a difference, immediately. Now that's, amazing! Aquasource Micro-Fine Super Serum is another welcome addition to the world of deep moisturizers. This one arrives in an ice-blue and white pump bottle. The color by itself makes you feel as though something special is inside--and it is.  It is formulated with Himalayan Pink Salt and Biotherm's patented Vitreoscilla Ferment (a microfine hydrator rich in essential minerals, including iron, to help stimulate your skin’s ability to hydrate itself). An exclusive Biopolymer helps insulate skin against moisture loss in any climate. This serum is silky, without any residue or greasy feel. You won't even remember you used it until later, when you realize your skin is still soft and moist.

I didn’t get the Chocolate Masque $28.00 2 fl. oz .by Hemloq in time for our Winter What Works column, but since I’m crazy about chocolate, I was intrigued. While there is cocoa listed as in ingredient in this masque, other natural, good-for-your-skin ingredients come first, including witch hazel and almond and macadamia nut oils. The simple, plastic, screw-top jar has a nice label that looks hand-applied. The instructions suggest that you steam face with a wash cloth before using this product, and then leave it on 15-20 minutes to get the full effect. I am one of those people who prefers the instant gratification of a quick skin treatment, but when you have time to indulge in relaxation and pampering, this is a perfect spa night treat. The super-moisturizing masque looks like milk chocolate pudding. On your skin, it can help undo some of the tightness and dryness associated with dry skin.  Super-emollient Shea butter, lactic acid (a mild exfoliant) and aloe vera are soothing and the product is also paraben and sulfite-free. If you are seeking a natural, moisturizing skin masque that’s gentle but effective, this product that will make you feel good, and healthy.

I love a skincare product that features a high SPF protection against the sun’s damaging rays, and I love products that are gentle. Pur-Lisse Essential Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 1.7 fl. oz is both gentle, and effective against sun damage. It has a hydra-shield complex that has UVA/UVB protection, and Vitamin E and soy protections to soften skin. White tea soothes even sensitive skin, along with blue lotus, lupine peptides, and sea silk. The fragrance, paraben, and color-free cream comes in a simple white tube with blue and silver accents that men will find appropriate too. It feels very rich and silky, but not at all greasy. TIP: apply 30 minutes prior to sun exposure. And, if you want to brighten your skin, try the Pur-lisse Ultra Skin Brightening Serum, 1.7 fl.oz. FOR THE GUYS

A guy’s skin can be just as sensitive as a woman’s, but if he wants to look neat, he still has to shave every day. Nature’s Gate Organics Shave Gel n Lemongrass & Clary Sage Creamy Shave Gel $6.99 pampers his skin with certified organic botanicals instead of chemicals, and Vitamins A & E, aloe vera and witch hazel, to reduce the irritation from shaving and soothe and moisturize his skin. The scent of this gel is amazing–like freshly mown grass (to me at least–others noticed the citrus-y lemongrass more and liked that, too). The flip-top tube is tastefully dark green and grey so it’s masculine but easy on the eyes. This shave gel is easy on his skin, easy to use, easy to like, and easy o the budget.  Our male reviewers gave it two thumbs up!

Lip balms that you can share, are sexy!  A wonderful line of lip balms that are truly unisex are the new line of A La Mode Lip Balms by Crazy Rumors. These clear balms smell like your favorite flavors of ice-cream (Almond Fudge, Banana Split, Mint Chocolate, Orange Creamsicle, Pistachio, and Raspberry Sherbet) but they last longer than a sundae, and cost less than a cone. They really do smell very much like the ice-cream treats they're named after. The Pistachio balm actually calmed my craving for ice-cream while moisturizing my parched lips...how can you beat that? Crazy Rumors also has a fantastic line of coffee and tea-themed flavors Perk "Lip Latte" or Brew "Tea Balm" .15 oz tube or .25 oz tin $4.00.  All of These swivel-up balms have Vitamin E and enriched moisturizing organic shea butter and soothing jojoba oil, blended with organic natural flavors. The "sweet" side is natural stevia!  The thing I like so much about these silky, pampering balms is that they are super-moisturizing, but not shiny, so guys don't feel weird wearing them (or kissing them off of their sweethearts). Treat your sweetie to a bunch of these balms for sweet treats that smell great, but won't expand a waistline. Of course these aren't just for guys, but these are balms for sharing.

Most men want to feel clean and take care of their skin, but they don't want to work at it, be confused by products, or overwhelmed. Bioelements has a range of products in seven categories to suit skin types from very oily to dry, and even acne-prone and sensitive.  An easy, effective product for men from this company is their HIS Bioelements Volcanic Mud Soap  $18.00 6 oz. The solid, oatmeal-colored bar soap is packed with all sorts of "good stuff" to make face and body of all skin types, effortlessly better.  The soap cleanses,  exfoliates, and defends against breakouts on face and body, too.  The scent reminds me of warm earth but our male reviewer said it reminded him of pipe tobacco.  Ground oatmeal sloughs off dead skin. Ginseng, sumac, gotu kola, dong qui, watercress, support and strengthen the skin, especially when it's under stress.  Oatmeal soothes and exfoliates; olive oil soothes and heals, coconut oil and neroli oil are also soothing, safflower oil hydrates and softens, castor oil is an emollient,  lavender and sage oils heal and have antiseptic properties. Our reviewer liked the nicely foaming, super-uncomplicated way to cleanse more than "soap and water" for the health and well being of his skin. It's for every man who wants to do a bit more, without fussing.

Guys are creatures of habit.  If they’ve been washing their bodies with bar soap all of their lives, they may find the switch to a liquid body wash, onfusing. However, if you give them a product that is easy to use, effective, and pleasant, they will quickly adapt.  That’s the case with the trio of Body Washes from Nivea for Men.  Nivea for Men Cool $4.99 16.9 fl. oz. and $3.49 8.4 fl. oz., quickly became a fave among our male reviewers. It really leaves guys smelling fresh and feeling cool, while it removes dirt and sweat. It won’t dry out his skin, and the cooling blue menthol gel invigorates. It’s a great way to get going in the morning. Nivea Energy Body Wash is for men with active lifestyles.  It has mint extract to energize and uplift his spirits, especially great after playing sports. Nivea for Men Sensitive Body Wash is soap and dye-free so it won’t dry out his skin or irritate it. All our male reviewers said they loved the clean scents and nicely lathering liquid that made their skin feel good, but not dry. Our guys kept the bottles and kept using the products-- a sure sign that Nivea has developed true "keepers!" And they'll have fun with Nivea for Men’s highly entertaining and interactive web site, too.

Guys, L'Oreal has something great, and new, just for you!  Their Hydra-Energetic Cleanser $6.99 5.0 fl. oz. arrives in a clear, plastic flip-top tube with black, white and matte, silver accent, that showcases the cheerful, bright orange gel, inside.  It's specifically designed for a man's skin, and the sensitivity he might feel after shaving. It's got a unique blend of soothing and softening ingredients, as well cooling menthol, and oat derivatives that help to eliminate impurities and prepare the skin for shaving. The scent is herbal, manly, light, and pleasant. The soap-free, pH-neutral formula is good for all skin types.  Our male reviewer liked it a lot--especially the scent, the tingling cool feeling, and the plastic, flip-top tube. He was less impressed with the idea that this cleanser was good for his skin and would help make it look more lively...but that's a guy, for you.  It's a nice. budget-minded product that might just make him more interested in his own skin care.

HAIR HELPERS

After a while, my color just loses it's “oomph.”  It still looks ok, but it’s no longer vibrant or shiny (almost like nail polish that’s dulled without a top coat).  John Frieda’s Luminous Color Glaze $9.99 6.5 fl. oz. and Luminous Color Glaze Clear Shine $9.99 6.f fl. oz. can revitalize dull color. The clear acts like a shiny top coat and the Color Glaze gives it a color boost. It’s an easy and inexpensive way to stretch your color investment just a bit longer, and it’s easy as pie. The longer you use the Luminous Color Glaze the more color is distributed, along with even more shine. There are shades to suit blondes (honey to caramel), brunettes (chestnut to espresso) and redheads (deeper to richer), and all are completely free of ammonia, dye and peroxide. The color looks alarmingly deep in the bottle, but it’s a mild, sheer glaze that won’t alter the color of your hair much–just boost a bit of color and shine. You can’t change the color of your hair with this product and it’s not permanent. Apply it as directed until you visit your salon for new color, or use the Luminous Color Glaze Clear Shine daily. Add it to wet after shampooing and conditioning. Three minutes, even once a week, adds a bit of gloss. TIP: For a weekly treatment, leave the Luminous Color Glaze Clear on your hair for 20 minutes, then shampoo and style as usual. It's like adding a shiny top coat to nail polish that’s getting dull.  John Frieda's  Frizz -Ease and Night Frizz-Ease Serums and his trio of Weather Works by FRIZZ-EASE daily use products are beloved by women who thank him daily for their smooth, straight, shiny, hair. If your hair naturally flat, Luxurious Volume Full Splendor Shampoo $6.50 8.45 fl. oz, and conditioning 8.45 fl. Oz $6.50 add fullness, thickness and lift, with ingredients that strengthen and “fill” hair strands from the inside out. The products plump up strands so they stand up from the root instead of hanging flat and lifeless. Other ingredients coat hair on the outside to make hair look thicker, and polymers help your strands stay together, so they look thicker and are easier to style. Both shampoo and conditioner come in attractive blue tubes with golden flip-tops. Also spritz on John Frieda Lavish Lift Root Booster $6.50 8.77 fl. oz from the pump top bottle, concentrating on the rootsl. Styling polymers plus lightweight silicone keeps hair shiny and under control, as well as thickening, lifting and protecting it from heat styling. The alcohol-free formula leaves hair crunch-free and soft, without flaking or drying. I didn’t try all the products in the Luxurious Volume line (there’s also a mousse and a hair spray), but if  limp, fine, thin, lifeless hair is your problem, these products offer an inexpensive, effective solution!

Your scalp can get as dry and dull as your actual hair. Pep it up with Biolage Scalptherapie Cooling Mint Shampoo $14.00 13.5 oz., Conditioner $16.00 13.5 oz. and Oil Control Treatment $16.00 4.2 oz.. This trio of hair treats helps to energize your scalp, remove excess oils, and soothe hair while offering a peppy, cooling/minty feel (thanks to mint and Kola Nut Complex). While it may seem counter-intuitive to use a shampoo that removes oil to actually soften your hair, this shampoo not only makes your scalp feel, for lack of a better word, freshened, it also leaves your hair soft, shiny and manageable. Mine felt like it had been treated to a super-cleanse and a moisturizing/shine treatment. Your scalp can also be oily. Scalptherapie Cooling Mint products focus on cleansing your scalp (as well as your hair) with a unique, “bio-cushion complex” that has green tea (for toning), mallow root (to soothe) and aqua oils that expand into quilted droplets that form a protective cushion against irritants. There are ingredients that purify and revive the skin on your scalp while glycerin absorbs excess oil (to normalize), and a blend of mint and kola nut stimulate and energize. TIP:  when using a conditioner, apply it to the ends of the hair first, working your way up to the scalp rather than starting at the scalp. This will allow the mid-lengths and ends of the hair to receive most of the conditioning, where it's needed most. It will also prevent excess build-up on the scalp. If your hair is truly oily, The Oil Control Treatment is a true boon. It's great if you if you shampoo your hair in the morning and find it limp and greasy before the end of the day! The powerful but fine mist of this product (with a light scent) minimizes the effects of oily scalp and hair. You can re-apply as often as you wish, too!

Hair treatments were often messy affairs that required a life of leisure -- but not anymore! The newly revamped, Redken Chemistry (formerly called "The Redken Chemistry System") offers a fast (about 15-minute plus blow drying), in-salon treatment that is personalized by your stylist with a range of options, to pamper and protect your hair.  Your stylist will help to choose the treatment that's best for your hair.  For example, if you hair is weak and damaged, you can add a "Strength Shot" There's an "All Soft Shot" for dry/brittle hair; a "Dandruff Control Shot" for dry/flaky scalp (all the shots can be blended together except for the "Dandruff Control Shot); Extreme Shot Phase is for deep treatment for weakened, distressed hair; Smooth Down Shot is a deep treatment for very dry, unruly hair; Color Extend Shot protects color-treated hair to help the color last longer; and the "Real Control Shot" works to repair damaged areas of the cuticle so really distressed hair looks and feels smoother, stronger, and more manageable. The Clear Moisture Shot offers deep treatment for normal to dry hair.  There's a lot more to learn about Redken Chemistry, so I blogged about it.

Ponytails will never go out of style. For Spring, they’re a must-have. Whether you wear them high on the top of your head or low at the nape of the neck, a ponytail can sometimes look a bit shabby when it’s just held with an elastic band.  An easy, quick, all-in-one way to make a ponytail, pretty, is with one of the unique, hand-crafted ponytail holders from Di Manno Designs.  Theirs consist of an elastic ponytail band attached to a leather band that snaps around the ponytail like a cuff bracelet (only much smaller). Their “hair cuffs” come in exotic skins like black croc, zebra or leopard pony $33.00 and genuine python skin $45.00, or in patent leather $28.00 in four basic colors: red, white, black and tan, or genuine leather $28.00 in red, white and back. The hair cuffs are available in 2" x 5" standard or 1'” x 5" narrow. There is also a pigtail set 1" x 4". Secure your ponytail with the elastic and then snap the cover over it.  The only downside is that if your hair is super-thick, you may have a bit of a challenge getting the hair cuff around it, but for most people, this isn’t going to be a problem. The Hair Cuffs are a perfect travel accessory for those bad hair days when you want to look polished and fashionable, but don’t have the time or tools to fuss.

I’m forever looking for ways to keep my hair sleek and shiny, but I can't "fight the fight" without great hair care products. Matrix Sleek.look has eight products that help protect your hair, and keep it sleek and less frizzy between shampoos. The key feature is a“24 hour multi-mend technology”  that instantly smoothes and repairs damage before frizz takes hold. The ingredients include time-locked smoothing agents to protect against humidity, ceramide to seal and repair split ends and help protect against future damage, apricot oil;  shea butter to moisturize hair so it’s smooth and protected;  and UV filters to keep your color vibrant and protect against the damaging effects of the sun. Often, smoothing products can feel heavy or make hair greasy, but the Shampoo $15.00 and Conditioner $15.00 made my hair feel soft and shiny, and helped keep it from getting “wild” without wilting it with oils. There are a number of serums, smoothers and conditioners in this line, all in mood lifting cheerful orange packaging and reasonably priced at $15.00-$16.00 . They can be found at sleek.look salons.

If you love the scent of lemon, and you want a great, thickening shampoo and conditioner, you're in luck!  We have just discovered new Paul Mitchell Thickening Shampoo $10.95 10.14 fl. oz. and Conditioner $11.95  10.14 fl. oz.  Along with an amazing, fresh and lemony scent, these products a blend of thickening agents and natural extracts such as lemon, sage, peppermint, and tea tree oil.  The Shampoo has a nice, rich lather and panthenol to help strengthen damaged hair and reduce split ends.  The Conditioner is a lightweight and yummy smelling product that protects and adds shine, while it improves manageability and reduces static.  The combo is pleasant to use, reasonably priced, and a wonderful boost every time you use them.

Even if your scalp isn’t prone to dandruff, everyone gets dry scalp and flakes now and then. There are plenty of dandruff shampoos that can cure the problem, but the problem with many of them is they’re unkind to your hair.  Use these detergent-strength dandruff banishers and find your hair stripped of all moisture and sometimes, even your hair color.  The chemicals can make dandruff shampoos pretty evil-smelling, too. DandruffScalpCure Shampoo $35.00 10.1 oz/$10.00 2 fl. oz and Conditioner 35.00 8.5 oz/410.00 2 fl. by Pureology, are totally different! For starters, the shampoo is 100% vegan, with organic botanicals or mushroom blend, green tea and burdock root to calm soothe, strengthen act as an anti-inflammatory, and provide antioxidant protection. The company doesn’t test on animals, and makes you feel even better by offering a true aromatherapy experience. Instead of smelling coal tar or chemicals, this luxury dandruff treatment smells rose, Plumeria, sandalwood, amber and vanilla! More importantly, along with effective 2% pyarithione zinc in the shampoo and 0.5% in the conditioner, these products feature Pureology’s signature "AntiFade" complex, a blend of antioxidants and UVA/UVB full spectrum sunscreen that helps maximize color retention so your color doesn’t fade with your flakes. I was worried that my hair would look and feel like straw, but Pureology’s professional but gentle formula left my hair shiny and soft as it worked. To be effective, you have to use dandruff-foghters a few times a week for several weeks to see long lasting results. The nicely lathering, nice smelling formula that makes hair actually look good as it deals with dandruff makes Pureology’s DandruffScalpCure Shampoo and Conditioner so luxurious and pleasant to use, managing flakes is a pleasure, not a chore. They’re really, really good!

If you color your hair, sulfates, surfactant and salts can dull color and strip much-needed moisture from it.  EverPure by L’Oreal Paris is a new, complete, sulfate-free color care line that won’t break your budget. Every product is sulfate-free and gentle to color-treated hair. They have UVA/UVB filters in the conditioners and masques to help prevent color from fading in the sun, and of course, they help keep hair soft and healthy looking.  These products smell fresh and slightly herbal, with extracts of mint rosemary and juniper--true aromatherapy bennies. There are 11 initial products in Frizz Fighting (EverPure Smooth), Volumizing (EverPure Volume) and Extra Nourishment (Everpure Moisture), plus a UV daily protection spray $8.99 for all hair types. The Shampoos and conditioners are $6.99 8.5 fl.oz. There’s also a Leave-In Conditioner $8.99 6 fl.oz and Deep Restorative Masque $8.99 5.1 fl. oz in the EverPure Moisture line, and a Deep Control Masque $8.99 in the EveryPure Smoothe line. The Anti-fade system helps color last up to 32 washes. I tried the EverPure Moisture Shampoo and Leave-in Conditioner. The shampoo was luxuriously creamy and reasonably foamy. washed out nicely, and left my hair looking healthy and nice.  The leave-in conditioner was easy to apply from it’s plastic pump bottle, and detangled nicely, while leaving my hair suitably soft. A plus is the mauve metallic packaging with hot pink accents.  If you are seeking a 100% vegan product that is not tested on animal s and contains no animal by-products and you want products that pamper your color and your hair, these are definitely worth the cost. Every little bit helps.

HANDS, FEET & NAILS

Very dry, cracked skin on your heels and feet aren’t just unattractive, they can be painful. Barielle’s new Heel and Callus Treatment Cream $22.00 6 oz can ease the pain of rough and cracked skin now, and with continued use, make your feet more fabulous for sandals season. Normal walking patterns, a love of flip-flops, and even poorly executed pedicures can make your feet extremely callused. Before you know it, the skin is dry and cracked! You can scrape and cut callus off your feet, but it isn’t easy, and can be dangerous. This new cream helps to soften and reduce callus (the thickened, hardened skin on your feet and heels caused by repeated contact to hard surfaces) without cutting or scraping it off. The formula has a high concentration of emollients and skin softeners including Shea butter, soybean oil, Vitamin E, aloe and stearic acid, as well as marine derived sea kelp extract and algae extract that offer deep moisturizing bennies. When you massage this product into your skin, it almost covers it like a silken glove that sticks to your hands to soften them, as well. It’s meant for feet, but of course you can use it on elbows and knees and any area that is dry and callused (I used this on calluses on my thumbs, and it works amazingly well). Apply before bedtime and you’ll wake up to verifiably softer ski. It won’t remove callus but it will soften it. Over time, that rock-hard callus will yield! It’s a great product that fits a very specific need. If you need it, you’ve got to have it!

Although I mostly think of Essie as one of my favorite nail polish choices, Essie also has some very nice products for hands, feet and nails. A new collection of products called "Naturally Clean" are particularly great, with natural ways to sanitize hands and nails, whether in preparation for a salon manicure, or DIY at home. The products come in simple white plastic pump or screw-top bottles, with clean, green and white labels,  All feature botanicals including eucalyptus oil (known for antiseptic properties), and a blend of vitamins, glycerin, and natural emollients to keep hands soft and smooth. The aromatherapy scent is a plus. There are five different products in the Naturally Clean line. I particularly liked the Moisturizing Hand Wash with Nourishing Botanicals $14.00 8 fl. oz.  The pump bottle features a clear liquid cleanser that has coconut oil and aloe vera to nicely moisturize even dry hands, and Vitamins A and E for antioxidant protection. This gentle cleanser smells fresh and green, and is suitable for everyone in your family (good for the office, too). I also like the  100% Natural Purifying Hand Treatment with Nourishing Botanicals $24.00 8 fl. oz. The clear gel smells fresh and uplifting, like grapefruit, absorbs quickly, and since the sanitizer is formulated with aloe and naturally derived vegetable glycerin, it's moisturizing. The Vitamin-enriched rice brand oil also provides antioxidant protection. Perhaps the best product I tried is the Purifying Nail Polish Remover with Moisturizers and Vitamins $6.00 4 fl. oz.  Not all nail polish removers are equal. This one whisked away even several coats of stubborn polish without having to scrub one little bit, yet it won't strip your nail bed and dry it out. The remover is infused with natural vitamins and antioxidants, plus eucalyptus oil-very impressive!

After a long, cold winter, my nails are showing the strain–dry, peeling, cracking and soft.  Luckily, Citra Formaldeyde Free Nail Strengthener $15.00 .47 fl. oz by Nail Tek can help  make them better.  Their protein formula seals the layers of the nail together safely, thanks to naturally occurring aldehydes derived from citrus sources that completely replace formaldehyde. Every time you apply the clear, formaldehyde-free formula, you reinforce the good works and help to thicken your nails, while helping them to become stronger and more flexible.  The only downside is a strong initial smell, although it dissipates, quickly. There are three different formulas: for strong, healthy nails (to protect); for soft, peeling nails, and for dry, brittle nails.  If you need help for your nails, don’t just sit on your hands--get a nail strengthener like Citra Formaldehyde free.

The Ped Egg $10.00 + *6.99 shipping is a plastic foot file in the oval shape of an egg, with a reservoir to hold the skin shavings as it hones down rough heels and calluses. I've seen this inexpensive but impressive little gadget in a lot of places including the Telebrands Web site, and even in my local drug store. This travel-friendly foot file could save you money as well as ward off foot problems, and pain. The Ped Egg has over 135 stainless steel micro blades (they remind me of a grater) to gently buff away dead, dry skin. There are also two adhesive, emery board/buffing pads that you also can stick on the egg, to smooth out the final bumps. You'll have to have just a bit of patience to run the Ped Egg back and forth over your skin --it takes longer than with a professional file, but the upside is that this file will "grate" through the hardest callus without cutting or ripping your skin to shreds. If you read the Advice Sisters Blog, you know that Creative Nail Design is the nail company of the fashion world and the runways, mentioned at least once every single day during Spring 2009 Fashion Week and numerous times in the archives.  Now Spring is here, and some of the gorgeous Nail Polish approx. $6.00  colors I saw on the model's fingers and toes, back in September 08, can be yours, too!  Metallics that have a soft patina instead of gaudy shimmer are popular, in shades like "Iced Cappuccino" a soft, ladylike, metallic brown used at the Omnia Luo runway show (among others) last season; and "Moonlight & Roses," a  magical, sheer, opalescent, shell. For Spring, try the sheer, whisper soft peachy pink called "French Pink," perfect paired with "Bisou de Lulu," a stark, medium-opaque white you can wear by itself (several coats makes it completely opaque), or with the opaque, creamy, flesh colored polish called "Cocoa" Tip:  coloring your nails in a neutral or light shade is a great choice, especially if your nails aren't long and strong (think "Cher"  in the 1970's). On the wild side, there's "Nail Noir," a blackened plum that is a modern classic.  CND has a fabulous, bold red called "Wildfire" (featured on the TIBI runway). The bright, uplifting, fire-engine red is both glamorous, and sexy, universally flattering, and wearable day or evening. Creative Nail Design polishes are available in dozens and dozens of colors, in Créme; Frost; Glitter ; Metallic ; Opalescent ;  Shimmer and sheers. They're formaldehyde and DBP-free, and have a UV absorber to protect your color from fading or discoloring. The brush makes application smooth and easy, and even the handle is easy to hold. High fashion, high quality, and for not a lot of cash.*Check the Advice Sisters Blog for how-top posts, and VIDEO featuring Creative Nail Design backstage at Fall 2009 Fashion Week!

Pampered Toes $10.00 *6.99 shipping is a real treat when I've walked too much or squished my feet into pointy shoes. It's a set of two plastic, gel-filled pieces with five holes (one per toe). They look a bit like a ladder for Gumby. The gel "ladders" are soft but not entirely squishy. They separate and stretch your toes so that they get the benefits of the same relaxing, stretching exercises you might do for your back, neck or arms. Putting on Pampered Toes takes a little bit of practice, since your toes are probably not used to being stretched far apart. Also, they weren't entirely comfortable at first (you will get used to the feeling). The first time I tried these I couldn't manage to wear them more than 8 minutes, but when I removed them, I can honestly say that my toes felt energized and quite wonderful! Even though I didn't think my toes were achy, they felt so much better after wearing the Pampered Toes that I was really surprised! The only downside, if there really is one, is that you can't walk around very well with these--they're bulky. Sit down on your couch to watch the evening news, or check your emails on the computer. Even better, put on your Pampered Toes and soak your tension away in the bathtub!

After all the dark, blackened Winter nail colors, it's a relief to see the delicate, sheer, pastels of Barielle's "Sun Goddess" Collection.  Their Nail Polish $8.00 offers a subtle, ladylike alternative that's a breath of fresh air. Barielle nail polish is not just shiny, easy to apply and nice to wear. It's formulated to offer safe, healthy and long-lasting glossy color coverage free of formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl-phthalate. It's suitable for women during pregnancy--but check with your doctor before using any cosmetics. Since I've been using Barielle Polish my always-fragile nails seem to have stopped chipping so much.  The half-dozen shades are all soft and shimmer-free. My favorite is "Sand-al Chic," a pale pink/peach sheer, and "Skinny Dip," a true sheer peach. One coat gives you a subtle wash of color, two, just a bit more opacity. "Nauti-Gal" is a sheer, lightly toasted taupe perfect for a nude look, as is "Beaches & Dreams" is a light, creamy, opaque peach. "Sailors Delight is a creamy, pink mauve (a good choice for a bride) as is " Shell Shock" a cheerful, medium pink sheer that's universally flattering). These lovely, neutral shades will be perfect until Fall rolls around and nail polish trends veer towards the dark side, again.

Avon's Foot Works Thermal Exfoliating Scrub $7.99 3.4 fl. oz is a little helper that's new and definitely good to use. The super-thick cream comes in a flip-top tube and instantly smoothes out minor roughness and dry skin on your feet. It's a perfect follow-up to a pedicure. I was surprised at how much this self-heating scrub warms up on contact with water and your skin. It's like an electric blanket for your feet! The heat doesn't last for long, but it does last long enough to relax you. As you work the cream into your skin, exfoliating beads clear away rough skin. While not a substitute for a foot file, it does a good job for maintenance and to deal with little bits of skin that pull on your socks and pantyhose. Most of all, it's affordable and fun to use. Make it a weekly treat!

ABOUT THE ADVICE SISTERS REVIEWS: For more than a decade,  The Advice Sisters have offered impartial, up-close-and-personal reviews.  Product reviews are conducted by  expert beauty & fashion reviewer, Alison Blackman Dunham.  If other opinions are included in a  review, "we" (instead of "I") is used.

A Signature Approach:   Many online publications and blogs find it easier and more economical to just post photos and press releases of products "as if" they have actually used them.  The Advice Sisters will never do this!  The Advice Sisters only include real reviews. That is, I (or a qualified reviewer) actually try the products,  or I don't  include them. This has been my signature for more than a decade. It's an approach takes much more time and effort, but it is what distinguishes The Advice Sisters from others----I know you appreciate the difference.

My Philosophy: This beauty, fashion and cosmetics review column is called "What Works" (not what doesn't). I believe it is far more constructive to direct you to great products. In my view, it is unprofessional and unfair to trash a product just because I personally didn't get the result I wanted from it.   As an experienced reviewer, I am always mindful of the fact that beauty reviews are highly subjective and it is my responsibility to describe products in a way that offers good information, but allows you to use your own, good judgment. I have tested thousands of products, so I have a solid basis of experience upon which to advise you, but just because I didn't like something doesn't mean you won't love it!

Your Input: Won't you let me know how The Advice  Sisters are doing?  Your comments help make the Advice Sisters better and more relevant to your interests and needs. Make comments or add your own reviews to the Advice Sisters Forums,  or on the Advice Sisters Blog
