Little things can make a big difference in how you look and feel, and they needn't cost a fortune. For those who love cosmetics, hair and nail products, a gift of beauty is the best gift of all1 Whether you're looking for a personal make-over, or seeking a dazzling beauty "find" item to enhance your look for the holidays, or you're gift shopping for others, this holiday beauty review Page Three, of The Advice Sisters "What Works' Beauty, Cosmetics & Fashion review column will give you great ideas.
Holiday HAIR HELPERS & GIFTS:
Sometimes you need a bit more than a tiny flat iron, to make hair efficiently smooth, but you still don't want to lug a full-sized flat iron around. Thankfully, Ken Paves makes a very nice mid-sized Pro-Style Styling Iron srp. $60.00, 410 degrees max, with nano silver tourmaline technology and ceramic plates that preserve moisture to create smooth and shiny hair. The (" long flat iron has plates are a good 1", necessary for anyone who has thick, curly and long hair. But the iron is smaller the biggies, and larger than the minis, so you can get your hair done in half the time! The design has a curved handle that lets your straighten your hair absolutely stick straight, or curl, flip or wave your hair with the same iron. This is particularly welcome when you want more than just one style option. And there’s a 360 degree swivel cord that helps keep the cord untangled so you don’t struggle with it. The iron also comes with a heat-resistant, thermal-lined travel pouch, so you can finish your style, and still put the iron away, quickly and safely. A good thing, too, because this iron heats up to 410 degrees quickly, within about two minute (there’s no heat adjustment function). There's also a lighted on/off switch so you know when the iron’s on, and when it’s not. I also love the look of this flat iron, with a cool, white body looks chic. Due to it's portability and flexibility, I'm dubbing it the "Swiss Army Knife" of travel flat irons!
Clever hair appliances are always a welcome gift for a girl from sixteen, to sixty! One limited edition hair tool from Remington is especially great. The Wet 2 Straight Flat Iron $29.99 generally comes in basic black, but for the holidays, there are two new version, exclusive to Wal-Mart: "Mistletoe Smooch," a 2" wide iron in vibrant red, and "Sugarplum Fairy," a 1" iron in bright purple! These tourmaline and ceramic irons with ionic heat eliminate frizz and make hair straight and shiny, but they do something else: these irons can be used on wet hair as well as dry hair, virtually eliminating the need for a blow dryer! Unique steam vents and channels extract excess moisture from damp hair and allow the steam to escape through the vents, so your hair dries and the cuticle is sealed, all at the same time. A 400F heat is ready in an astounding 30 seconds! A digital control has turbo boost to the highest temperature, with 30 heat settings for different types of hair. A nice, bright, digital, LCD display shows you what the temperature is, and whether you're on the wet or dry hair setting. There's an automatic shut-off for safety, a sturdy swivel cord, and the plates have smooth glide coating to protect against damage. I tried the 1" regular model in black. My hair is super-thick, so I really needed to towel dry and semi-dry my hair before the iron could work it's magic, but the entire drying and styling process took a lot less time than usual. If your hair is reasonably thick, not crazy, you'll get great results. And, the cool colors make this an affordable and covet-able gift.
Looking for a luxe gift to please women and men, or a special couples? Give a luxurious gift of moisture. Pureology's Holiday Hydrate Kit $54.00 (photo) comes in an impressively large co-friendly box featuring an eye-catching, white on white Pureology logo design: The products inside will hydrate hair all Winter long. The box contains: HydrateShampoo 10.1 oz.; HydrateConditioner (8.5 oz., and a GlossingMist 4.2 oz. The Hydrate and Condition Shampoo and Conditioner have Pureology's AntiFade Complex. Pureology's "Advanced Hydrating Micro-Emulsion Technology" penetrates hair fibers to deeply moisturize from within. Mini-sizes are also a holiday must-have. Get a trio of Pureology treats in the Signature Celebration NanoWorks Gift Set $28.00. Inside an eco-friendly, white on white, Pureology logo box are 2 fl. oz. mini bottles of NanoWorks Shampoo and Conditioner, and an Aromatherapy Candle in a Pureology logo tin. These 100% vegan products have an antioxidant blend of acai berry, pomegranate, and blueberry and three types of nurturing mushrooms to moisturize, soothe, and help repair hair with high quality proteins. There's also an allergen-free fragrance (jasmine, vanilla, amber and rose), ideal for sensitive skin. This makes a make a wonderful gift for men or women. For a nifty gift under $25.00, I suggest the PureVolume Signature Celebration Pure Volume Petites $21.00. This boxed set of 4 fabulous products, features three, 2 oz. travel-sized PureVolume products, and a 2 oz. Essential Repair Split End Correcting Treatment. These products work to volumize thin or fine hair, and to add softness and shine while protecting color from fading. They also have Pureology's AntiFade Complex to help color last longer. Give the quartet, or break up the set and pop them individually into special people's stockings and gift bags.
Some might like the "Annie" look, but it's not for me! Lately, I'm reaching for the latest in my arsenal of hair-straightening helpers: Conair's mighty MiniPRO® 3/4" Ceramic Steam Straightener srp. $22.99. This striking, bright red metallic mini flat iron has 3/4" plates, not quite the standard 1" and not the thin 1/2" plate. The former really is too bulky to carry with you, and the latter is a great touch-up tool, but is laborious to use on long, thick, curly hair if you really need heavy duty straightening. This 3/4 mini is light and small enough to pop into a handbag, but it can tackle larger hair straightening jobs faster and easier. This MiniPro Ceramic Steam Straightener has so many features, for so little cost, you will fall in love with it. Read all about the benefits and features of the Conair MiniPro Ceramic Steam Straightener in the Advice Sisters Blog. There's also a marvelous, Mini-sized Conair MiniPro Tourmaline Ceramic Styler (Model 245X) $19.99 that has a heap of features, in a dryer small enough to fit into it's own zippered sack the size of a quart zip-lock bag! It has 1200 Watts of Power, and 2 speed settings (low for thin-average hair, and High for coarse, thick or hard-to-style hair). It also has tourmaline ceramic technology that by now you know dries hair fast without damaging it, leaving it silkier, shinier, smoother, and since it control static electricity, hair is also less prone to frizz. This remarkable little dryer is really effective, drying hair fast even though it's small and lightweight. To help out with styling, it comes with two attachments: concentrator nozzle, and the cutest little diffuser ever, to help curls stay bouncy and well formed. It has dual voltage so you can take it anywhere. You would expect to pay three times the price for a dryer with all this, but it's less than $20.00--amazing! This is going to be a great gift for men and women so get yours before they're all sold out.
The first thing you'll notice about the Conair 250 Eco Ionic 1400 Watt Dryer $19.99 is that it is packaged in 100% recyclable material made with soy-based inks, with 65% less plastic and packaging material. That's a welcome relief from the overly-packaged, clamshell type plastics that you need a jackhammer to remove! But inside, there's a white and grey, cone-shaped dryer with delicate, green graphics. And that's not the only tipoff that the dryer is eco-friendly! This relatively small hair dryer packs 1400 watts of power, but uses 24% less energy, while providing the same efficiency as an 1875 watt dryer! And, it still has all the bells and whistles: iconic technology to help control frizz and enhance shine, high and low heat controls, a cool shot button, and a concentrator nozzle. It works amazingly well. I adore this lightweight, easy to use, effective dryer that makes me feel good that I'm doing just a little more to make the Earth a "greener" place. Everyone can use a new dryer, especially if it is energy efficient...the Conair 250 Eco Ionic Dryer makes a fantastic (and affordable) gift for everyone! Hair on your head is coveted, but hair on your face? Maybe not so much! Give yourself a break from waxing, with the Lindo Twist-N-Roll Tweezers $12.95 from Grace Harvest & Associates. This flexible, metallic tool works like a threader, capturing those pesky, tiny hairs on your face and removing them in seconds -- without any chemicals, mess or fuss. It's a DIY way to remove facial hair that won't cause breakouts or cause a lot of irritation. Twist-N-Roll is a perfect travel companion. Slim, flat, and nearly weightless. All you have to do is bend the Twist-N-Roll Tweezers into an upside down “U” shape and literally start gently “rolling” over the upper lip, cheeks, neck and chin area. When you get used to it, you don't even need a mirror, and it takes literally, seconds! Mastering the tool takes a little practice, and I can't say it's completely painless, but neither is waxing. After a while, you'll not only get used to it, you won't even need a mirror!
If you're spending more than a a few minutes with a styling brush, your hair, your hands can get pretty tired. Conair's line of brushes called Gel Grips $6.99/each have a soft, gel handle that gives your hands the same, soft gel break you give your feet with gel insoles! You can squeeze the handle (a bit) just like those popular, tension balls. The tiny, plastic ball tips on each bristle of most of the brushes, won't rip your hair or scratch your scalp. You can even choose from three, soft pastel shades: violet, blue and iridescent pearly silver. There are five styles, and if you get hooked on the concept of the gel grip handle (and I think that's a given), you will be happy to know that Conair also makes a blow dryer with a gel grip handle $24.99; Straightening iron $30.99 and even a shower head $26.99 All of these would make fantastic and very budget-minded holiday gifts and stocking stuffers that will not be recycled or returned!
Glam Holiday Nails:
Sometimes, mini-sized items make mighty great gifts! Borghese's Mini Nail Lacquer Gift Sets $9.99 have luxurious products that cost less than a pizza! How can you beat that? Inside each snap-front, clear, plastic pouch, are four trendy nail lacquers in Borghese's beautiful, heart-shaped bottles, but shrunken to the size befitting an elf! The adorable little bottles fit into a purse or makeup bag, so you can actually tote them to touch up chips and dings. There are two different collections. The one I tried, Serena, has two glitter polishes and two shimmers. There's a sheer, glitter raspberry you can use alone for a hint of sparkle, or use as a top coat over another color. There's also a glitter charcoal that looks a bit more subdued, but sparkles like a thousand pieces of confetti in the right like. Both are perfect for holiday parties just around the corner). For daytime, there are two, beautiful, very deep jewel-toned polishes in charcoal, and plum. The other set Called Allegra, has warm, sparkling shades. *want to know more about these cute kits? There's more information on the Advice Sisters Blog
Duri Cosmetics, new to our reviews, began in 1990 as a manufacturer and distributor of full nail polish and nail treatment lines and complete hair removal waxing line for beauty salons and spas. Today they have over 200 nail polish shades and 10 exclusive treatments for nails and hands. The Advice Sisters tried Nail Polish $5.00 from the Duri Holiday Collection: Icicle #452, and "Iced Plum #354." The former is a perfect holiday color, because this sparkling, semi-sheer white can be used alone, as a French nail tip, or as an overlay on a deeper color to add shine and glittery sparkle. The latter is a an opaque, super-shimmery sugarplum that adds a soft, metallic, deep mauve sheen to nails. The fast-drying colors are beautiful, and are easy for DIY, but ask for them in your favorite salon or spa.
Stunning, gleaming, jewel-toned colors that apply smoothly in an effortless, single, coat. That's China Glaze Nail Lacquer srp/ $6.50 with hardeners! For the holidays, there is a treat in store for your nails: a trio of nail lacquers in raspberry and wine. "Secrets" is a rich, shimmery, almost metallic wine that pairs perfectly with little black dresses, velvet, satin, and holidays. "International Flare" is a rich, shimmery raspberry that's bold enough to stand up to intense fabric palettes, but soft enough to wear to the office. A sexy creme version is "Designer Satin," a cool raspberry creme that somehow, looks right on every skin tone. The polish dries super-fast, lasts days without chipping.
Q: What's better than a Creative Nail Design Product? A: a Creative Nail Design gift set! One of my favorite, affordable, gifts for this season is the beautifully boxed,. Scentsations Lotion Gift Set $11.50 featuring three, 2 fl. oz. bottles of CND's fantastic, instantly-silkening, hand & body lotion. Each will leave your skin beautifully scented and soft. Vanilla Shimmer is a soft, adult vanilla that will drive men wild, with a pearly glow that's sexy, not showy. Cranberry Lotion, and Clementine & Mistletoe, are both tart and cheerful scents for a "feel good," aromatherapy treat that's the holidays in a bottle. These arrive in a mint green, just-add-a-tag-&-bow cardboard presentation box. It's a perfect gift idea as a little "thank-you" gift. In these budget-minded times, you can afford to give this useful and thoughtful gift to one to everyone and not worry about the bills, come January. The Almond SpaManicure Gift Set $26.90 is a fabulous gift. It's the one you give to special girlfriends, and that hard-to-please sister in law. It features a caramel-colored cardboard box with an interior "peek-a-boo" (just add ribbon and card) . Nestled inside are two fabulous, sinfully-scented-with-almond products to exfoliate and smooth your skin: Almond Moisture Scrub 3.4. oz and Almond Soothing creme 2.6 oz. (Read our detailed review of CND's Almond Line in the Advice Sisters Blog). But that's not all you get. You also get a free CND Color Effect in gold shimmer to add "oomph" (and a bit of the Midas touch) to your nails, no matter what color you choose. TIP: While you're shopping for everyone else, treat yourself to the full-sized bottle of Scentsations Clementine & Mistletoe Hand & Body Lotion $11.50 8.3 fl. oz. The Advice Sisters web site and blog offer impartial, up-close-and-personal product reviews, conducted by expert beauty & fashion reviewer, Alison Blackman Dunham. If other opinions are included in a review, "we" (instead of "I") is used. My Review Philosophy: This beauty, fashion and cosmetics review column is called "What Works" (not what doesn't). I want to direct you to what I think are great products, not denigrate those I didn't like (but you might love). All beauty reviews are subjective. It's my responsibility to describe products in a way that offers information, but allows you to use your own, good judgment about whether to buy it or not. I have tested thousands of products and that gives me a strong background on which to base my comments, but in the end, the decision to try something is yours, alone. A Signature Approach Many online publications and blogs find it easier and more economical to just post photos and press releases of products "as if" they have actually used them, or get paid for "advertorials" (reviews written in exchange for money). I only allow genuine reviews. That is, I (or a qualified reviewer) actually try the products reviewed. This approach takes much more time and effort, but it is what distinguishes The Advice Sisters from a lot of others. I know you appreciate the difference. A Note About Compensation: I never have, and never will, write about products using just high resolution photos and press releases, without experiencing the product "in person." These type of "faux" reviews add to the junk and clutter on the Internet, without offering anything substantive or new. In order to write real reviews of real products, however, I use samples provided by a company or a public relations firm. There is no way I could write valid, responsible, up-close-and-personal reviews without them. Sample products and services are not nearly "compensation" for the tremendous amount of effort it takes to write genuine reviews, nor do free samples influence my experienced opinion of products in any Advice Sisters content. I do not use "advertorial" (paid content) and, when I choose to include paid advertisements, they are clearly identifiable. PARTY MAKEUP & GIFT IDEAS:
Clarins has a treat in store for every makeup lover, this this holiday season with their Palazzo d'Oro collection. The limited edition products embody the light and radiance of Venice, drawing inspiration for it's beautiful, golden palaces, subtle colors, and architecture. Naturally, the collection is gold-themed. Open the red, Clarins outer cartons, and find shiny/matte metal compacts, square, mirrored and protected by metallic pouches. The Gold Attraction Face Palette $57.00 is one of the most glam products I've ever seen for the holidays. Open the gorgeous, weighty, gold compact, and be dazzled by a beige powder embossed with a delicate, lace work pattern, glitzed all over with gold glitter. A light dusting of this sheer, golden powder adds just the right amount of golden shimmer to face and decollete. There's also a Gold Attraction Eye Quartet and Liner Palette $66.00. Two eye shadows, one highlight, an accent color, and a liner, in warm, earthy shades, arrive in the same gorgeous gold compact as the Gold Attraction Face Palette. *there's a lot more information about these products in the Advice Sisters Blog review.
For the holiday season, Dolce&Gabbana is serving up the glitz, with a party-perfect makeup collection called "Golden Beams." The color palette mixes shimmer with matte neutrals and golds. The outer compacts, naturally, are also elegant, shiny, gold. They have a modern glamour that reminds me of a time when women carried lipstick in tiny, sparkling, deco minaudieres, and bold applied it in public! The products are gorgeous, luxurious, and effective. The results can't help but make you feel glamorous and beautiful. If you can only afford one little splurge for the holidays, make it from Dolce & Gabbana's Golden Beams Collection. You'll be "golden" in glamour, all season long. *read the rest of the review on the Advice Sisters Blog
Give what you love, the saying goes. The gift I'd most like to get, let alone give, is something from Dior Beauty. The Dior holiday collection is full of jewel-toned, shimmery goodies that will make your holidays merry and sparkling, even if it's just an ordinary day. And, at least piece from Dior's holiday collection is a must-have for the office party and day/night looks. Let's get to the must-have gift, first: The Dior Cannage Palettes $40.00/each. There's the Dior Red, and Dior Black Cannage Lip Palettes $40.00 and there's one for eyes: the Dior Black Cannage Eye Palette $40.00 (Photo). This eye palette is going to elicit oooh and aaahs from every woman around you when you take it out to "touch up." It's the cutest, most coveted compact ever: a black patent-leather square with Dior's iconic quilting, from which dangles a large, silver, Dior "D" just like the ones on those famous handbags! Inside the mirrored compact are four rectangles of shimmery, super-silky shadow in soft brown, peach, and copper, featuring an quilted embossing. There's also a glam, non-embossed gold highlighter in Dior's iridescent eyeshadow formula. A dual-tipped sponge applicator with silver handle completes the compact. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't love this! If you want to be the one she remembers fondly, give her one of these palettes. There are so many more delicious items from this collection you'll want to get, and give. *please read the entire review on the Advice Sisters Blog.
Kristen Corcoran founded Larémin because she couldn't find makeup that she felt was healthy as well as beautiful. and she wanted to make great mineral makeup available to women, everywhere. The Advice Sisters tried some of the new, Colors of Love collection featuring four loose powder eye shadows/liners, and two loose powder blushes, and one loose powder luminzer. The products arrive in traditional, shaker jars. I didn't try the entire collection, I recommend "Cherish" Blush $20.99, a medium rose in a matte finish that adds color that looks natural, but not so natural you can't see it. It looks amazingly pretty on just about everyone. I also tried the loose powder Eye Colour $9.49. "Moonbeam" is a party-perfect ivory highlighter/shadow. "Captivale" is a gorgeous, pearly brown, and "Fixation" is a low-sheen taupe-ish green that's modern and even just a tiny bit edgy. There's also a deep coffee-colored liner called "Midnight Espresso." Loose powder shadows take a bit of care to apply, but these are blendable and long lasting. TIP: hold a tissue under your eye when applying the loose powder--most of the residue will fall on the tissue instead of all over your face. You can also apply a thick coating of loose powder, then whisk it away along with any loose powder shadow that has fallen below your eye. I think I could really become a huge fan of high-quality Larémin products. If you want to try something new, and really nice, try something from this line!
When you're getting ready for a night out, you want to apply makeup that makes you feel glamorous. Pixi's Flawless Finishing Powder $21.00 is just such a product. The square, lime-green compact with mirrored interior and a little pull-out drawer for the applicator sponge, is retro and chic. The powder sets your makeup so that it lasts, and while it's doing that, minerals like MalaKite, Rhodolite, Zincite, and hyaluronic acid, Vitamin A and E, provide good-for-your-skin ingredients for anti-aging, skin-firming, healing, and moisturizing. You'll feel ladylike using this compact, and your makeup will last a whole lot longer when you're out on the town, or even if you're just working in the office. One sheer, translucent color works for everyone. TIP: Fix flaws fast, with Pixi's Flawless Vitamin Concealer $18.00. It's a little swivel-up stick of silky, mineral, peach-toned concealer that is hypoallergenic, paraben, dye and talc-free, and has Vitamins A, C and E to diffuse light away from those "partied too much" dark circles and little lines. Small enough to pop into a tiny handbag, it is your secret weapon when you have to look fresh and lively (and even when you don't). Mineral makeup is all the rage right now, but not all mineral makeup is created equal. One that I really like for it's multi-tasking friendliness, is Pur Minerals, 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation $24.50. This natural mineral makeup is in a pressed powder form, in a mirrored compact, so you can take it anywhere, and you won't get loose powder all over you. It's a full coverage foundation, concealer, powder and SPF 15 protection all in one. It comes in a variety of colors from light, to very deep. The silky texture is thanks to organic shea butter and vitamin E, and you won't find any harsh chemical dyes, talc, alcohol, fragrance or preservatives in it. Even better, this product has titanium and zinc, offers an all-natural SPF protection. The product is gentle enough to use on any skin type, and it's even recommended by plastic surgeons and dermatologists. A lot of mineral makeup products are so sheer you can't use it for a truly polished makeup look. But this product really covers well, without looking mask-like. TIP: powder foundations are wonderfully easy to use, but using a good moisturizer first, especially if your skin is a bit dry, will help the product look even smoother. The compact includes a sponge applicator, but I prefer to apply it with a brush, such as Pur Minerals' Retractable Chisel Brush $24.00. It's super-soft, flat head of cropped bristles picks up the powder and distributes it perfectly.
At New York Fashion Week, Maybelline was an official sponsor. And, the hit of the tents was Maybelline's Color Sensational Lipcolor. With 48 intense colors to choose from, and a super-creamy feel (thanks to honey nectar), you will finally find intense shades that make you feel sensational, not silly. The cases are elegant, jewel-toned, see-through plastic with a silver accent. The colors are intense and long lasting, but the formula is surprising: silky on the lips, with a moist but not too shiny look that's new, now. Your lips will look and feel smooth (even if they're not perfect). Try a luxe cream like "pink Petal," a deep, rose pink, or for absolute drama, "red Revival" is a deep, clear, lipstick red so classic, intense and genuine, you might just want to look at it’s beauty. If your skin is pale, you still can wear this! It's great for everyone but especially for pale skin on whom reds can be problematic. For those who love pearle, "Sugared Honey" is a lovely and soft, warm nude. "Plum Tastic" is a berried plum, with a pearle, soft touch. The Maybelline web site has a color finder to help you find your perfect shades. TIP: Apply lipstick by starting in the center of your upper lip. Work from the center to the outer edges, following the contours of your mouth. Repeat the technique on your lower lip.
Bad Gal Mascara by BenFit Cosmetics has always been my favorite, go-to product when I want seriously dark, luscious lashes. But sometimes I want to soften the drama. Luckily, BenFit now has given me the option, with Bad Gal Brown Mascara $19.00,. It is soft but still deep brown -- a mascara perfect for those who want day time lashes that look gorgeous, but not too, too "made up." The tube is long and slim, with a sleek, spiral brush that separates and colors, without clumps. Dark brown mascara colors even blonde lashes like black does, without the harshness. Bad Gal Brown Mascara is the perfect compliment to meta Make-up Designatory (MUD) is a line of makeup created for a genuine make up school, but you can DIY a pro-style look with some of their fine products. For a layerable Blush $16.50 that is available in 15 varied shades, that will last, and can go from sheer to intense with just a few more swipes with a blush brush, I like MUD! To warm up pale cheeks, try "Pumpkin," an earthy apricot that flatters almost all complexions. The Eye Shadow $13.50 can be used wet or dry, and can be layered to make a new color. For example, try the shimmered copper called "Cajun Spice" mixed with "Daisy," a bright yellow gold, to brighten up the color and take it to a whole, new level. These shadows are all richly pigmented, and feel soft and blendable. There are more than 41 shades to help you express your creativity. You can't help but look good, when you're using great products. Rimmel Lasting Finish Kiss & Stay Gloss $7.99 is a two-–for one product that's perfect for lip product fanatics, and a great thing to carry in your purse. One side of the tube has a sponge-tipped applicator that dispenses an intense, long lasting lip stain with moist color, the other has a brush tip that slicks on a color enhancing, shimmery shine. You can use these separately, but they work best together . The glossy color base forms a lightweight, flexible film that gently bonds color to lips, as the topcoat seals in and enhances the color. We didn’t try it for the 10 full hours that this product supposedly can last but we did wear it through dinner and drinks Hours later, when the gloss wore off, the lip color remained as a soft stain. And our lips still felt moist! There are a dozen color combos to choose from. We liked Enduring Love, a deep warm rose with a soft pink shimmer gloss. More dramatic is First kiss, a mauve-ish shimmer gloss with a deep, American beauty rose lip color.
These days everyone is trying to make a bigger, better mascara brush. But L’Oreal went the other way with a tiny, round brush for its' newest product, L’Oreal Paris Telescopic Explosion Mascara The brush looks like a Medieval instrument of torture, but it helps to reach every eyelash--even the tiny ones in the corners that big brushes can’t reach. The result is lashes that are colored down to the teeny weenie ones. At first, I wasn’t sure how I was going to like using a small, round brush, but the ball of bristles really goes in an spot treats any places you have missed. The mascara comes in basic black and brown, and in a striking red and black case that looks a bit like a spyglass. It’s got Pro-Vitamin B 5 to condition lashes and jojoba and palm oils for a soft texture that goes on easily. This novel and effective mascara is not expensive -- just $9.49, so it’s definitely worth a try! It will be available this month and makes a nice stocking stuffer.
Bobbi Brown brings all things bright and beautiful to her limited edition, holiday products. They arrive in the familiar, shiny, black, logo compacts, but jazzed up for the holidays with chrome tops so shiny, you can use them as mirrors (there are actual mirrors inside the compacts as well). Her main themes for the holiday season are a modern take on glitz: shimmery metallics and pearls, with a few matte options. But, as with all of Bobbi Brown's makeup items, the colors enhance your own, natural beauty without looking overly made-up. The formulas and colors are flexible, so you can make them work for daytime as well as for evening. Here are just a few of my favorites for pampering yourself, or to delight a lucky fashionista at holiday time. The photo shows the Earth Metal Lip & Eye Palette $60.00 but there is so much more to love in this collection, so check out the entire review on the Advice Sisters Blog Josie Maran was a teen model, and the face of Maybelline for nearly a decade. She also had a successful acting career. But when Josie became a mom, she re-evaluated her priorities, and decided to use all that she'd learned about makeup, to create her own line. It's easy to like the luxe products that are kind to skin, and in eco-friendly, biodegradable packaging. I really like her Lip Plumping Gloss $20.00 that comes in a wanded tube with sponge tip, in six shades named for positive attributes, like Freedom, Optimism, Strength, and Bravery. I tried "Daring," a deep, shimmery pink that is universally flattering. The plumping action comes from gentle but effective Marine Collagen that, when extracted from sea plants, has been proven to help lips retain their moisture. Use for 30 days and see plumper, nicer looking lips, but you'll also love it just for the pretty, hint of tint this luxe gloss, gives. Mineral Fusion, new to our reviews, combines antioxidants and pharmaceutical grade minerals to create makeup you will want to wear, and that is good for your skin. The products are paraben and talc-free, provide some natural UV protection, and use natural colorants. The products are formulated with micronized minerals in a triple-milled process to keep them smooth and easily blended, plus they contain mica to diffuse light, so skin looks much better than bare. in addition, the products have a "WRAP" benefit: • White tea –boosts the immune function of skin cells and protects against the damaging effects of the sun; • Red tea – contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that work to tighten and smooth the skin. • Antileukine 6® – controls photo-aging, balances hydration and protects the integrity of DNA; • Pomegranate – highly efficient in fighting free radicals; and ellagic acid for healing the skin. The Advice Sisters tried a few products from the line. While many mineral-based lines only sell loose powder products, Mineral Fusion also has several "solid" products, including a Pressed Powder Foundation $39.00 that comes in a copper-y mirrored compact, offer three shades each of: cool, deep, neutral, olive, and warm. Use a brush and you'll get beautiful results. The product is moistly matte, and you can use your fingertip (or a brush) to apply a little bit more as concealer. There's also pressed Powder Concealer $30.00 in cool, neutral and warm, but I think the foundation does a great job on small flaws, too. For those who love bronzers, there's a pressed powder Bronzer Duo $39.00 offering a light shade and a contour shade in two types: "Sparkle" for an all over warm glow, and "Luster" with a sheen glow as well as a matte finish. The Luster seemed deeper than I'd normally use because I'm a paleface, but mineral makeup is more natural and forgiving, so it will work well for most everyone. I also liked the Mineral Fusion Lip Gloss $15.00. It is packaged in a wanded tube, and comes in seven shimmery colors. It has a tingle, and is silky and completely non-sticky. It feels luxe, but it's still affordable. I tried "Sea Star," a glowing, light pink that gives luminous, not patent-leather-gooey, shine. All in all, these are impressive mineral makeup products that come in trendy colors, and are easy to use!
Victorias Secret makeup collections have always amazed me because they're beautiful, trendy, high performance, and yet, really affordable. For now and for the holidays, you can't go wrong treating yourself, or your BFFs, with anything from the limited edition Exotic Jewels Makeup Collection by supermodel and TV star, Heidi Klum. The mostly plum-centric palette has flattering options for every skin tone. And you can't help but admire the compacts, featuring intricate, Indian designs tinged with gold. Everything in the collection is gorgeous, but my favorite is the "Hidden Palace" Eye Shadow Palette $24.00 featuring shimmery shades of champagne, mauved-nude, bright berry, deep violet, and black. Add a deep, plum-colored, lash lengthening Mascara $13.00 in "Amethyst" and a party-perfect, plum-tinted Glitter Liner $12.00 in "Majesty." There are also plum-themed lip and face products to complete the collection.*check out the Advice Sisters Holiday Blog post about Victorias Secret Beauty, including a video with makeup artist Linda Hay, explaining how to use the Heidi Klum, holiday collection. You’re getting ready for that special night out, and you’ve done your face. A final touch should be Maybelline New York’s Mineral Power All Over Sheer Shimmer Loose Powder Illuminator $13.99! Just a touch of this loose power, adds "Pow!" to your face and body. 100% micro-minerals brighten up your complexion for a year-round, sheer shimmer. The powder is enriched with mineral mica and mineral quartz for a soft, lightweight glow and illuminating finish Contains 0% oils, 0% talc and 0% fragrance and lasts for up to 8 hours. Sweep it all over your face and shoulders, or wherever else you please. It comes in Pink, Peach and Nude. You wont’ get a lot of color, but you will get enough shimmer to add a festive touch without spending a fortune. "Sunrise Bronze" gives you the same, shimmery, sheer look, with warm bronze as a bonus! The powder comes with it’s own, mini-sized Kabuki brush for best application. It’s a little pick me up splurge that’s a must-have multi-tasker, or a nice stocking stuffer for a friend.
