Fragrance is such a personal gift, and one that will be treasured for months, maybe years, to come. However, choosing a scent for yourself, or someone else, can be mystifying. Here are some quick tips to get the perfect fragrance: * When you open a bottle of perfume you’ll get a general impression that defines the type of scent it is. The basic types are: Floral (flowers); Fruity (fruits); Fougere (grassy, green, herbal); Oriental (incense, spices, exotics); Chypre (woods, earthy) and Oceanic (synthetics meant to evoke a particular feeling such as: ocean, sand, rain, fabric). Know what type of fragrance you want before you go to the store. * Don’t judge a scent just by how it smells in the bottle. It must be worn on skin, over a few hours time, to understand the scent. Get samples to try later, if possible. Do not over test! Trying multiple fragrances, overwhelms the senses. * Consider the strength when applying — fragrance is meant to be smelled up close, not across a room. In general, lighter, fruitier fragrances are better for the warmer months. Leave heavy orientals and intoxicating perfumes for cooler months. *more expensive fragrances may include more expensive ingredients, blended by skilled experts, but the same “notes” (key ingredients) can often be found in less costly fragrances as well. Your nose is the ultimate judge of what you like.
FANTASTIC FRAGRANCES
Rarely do I fall in love with an entire line of products, but one that I truly love is Lisa Hoffman Beauty. The Advice Sisters have reviewed a number of her amazing body and skincare products in past What Works columns (use the "search" box to find specific ones). I have personally named Lisa Hoffman Beauty's single-serve, travel-friendly body and skin care ampoules the Product of the Week on the Advice Sisters Blog. And I was there at the Fragrance Foundation FIFI awards when Lisa Hoffman was the 2009 Fragrance of the Year, finalist (along with heavyweights Tom Ford, Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, & Acqua di Parma). Other women might sit at home waiting for their celebrity husbands (Lisa's is Dustin Hoffman) to give them fame and fortune, but Lisa has created her own, awesome company featuring effective, travel-friendly products that are worthy of deep sighs of pleasure. She has a high-end fragrance collection called Variations $95.00/set Refills $60.00/4 your Madagascar Orchid fragrance kit with this set Her unique fragrance concept pairs four precious pulse-point oils in tiny glass vials with roller ball tops, meant to compliment a woman's varying, olfactory sensitivities throughout the hours of the day and night. The Morning version is sparkling and energizing, but not overwhelming. The Daytime version is stronger and fuller-bodied, to enhance your body as you move around. The Evening version is more sensual and warm. And there's a Bedtime version to wear during sleep--a soft and powdery scent that helps you feel soothed and slightly sensual, without bothering anyone else. All four rollerball vials are presented in a hard-sided, glossy, faux snakeskin box, and nestled further into a soft, luxe, genuine leather, magnetic closure pouch with individual, leather bands to hold the precious scents. There is also space in the interior of the pouch for a credit card, some money, or maybe, a few business cards. I tried Madagascar Orchid, in a lime green pouch (one of the two Fragrance of the Year finalists) containing notes of sheer jasmine, ylang ylang, mimosa mood, and pink peony. It is a very feminine, white floral. It's an exotic scent that reminds me of the Hawaiian islands. Lisa really understands how to translate those four period of the day and use the same basic notes to enhance a woman's mood. My personal favorite was the evening version, a bit spicier and warmer. All of the scents are noticeable, but still, they are soft and ladylike. You will notice them and love them, but you won't be bowled over by a cloud of scent. These are for getting up close and personal. There are four other, fabulous, distinct fragrances: Tunisian Neroli, Tuscan Fig, French Clary Sage, and Japanese Agarwood. Each has a complimentary leather pouch and outer box, perfect for gift-giving.
Stella McCartney’s latest take on her Signature fragrance Stella, is , Stellanude Eau de Toilette $43.00 1 oz.; 1.6 oz. $63.00; 3.4 fl. oz $81.00 and it is also available as a Linen Mist $59.00 4.2 oz. Stellanude is soft and feminine. It's meant to be an extension of her lingerie collection. The top notes in this floral fragrance include Moroccan rose infused with a hint of grapefruit (but you mostly smell the rose). The heart is of tender white peony, and a very slight, spicy hint of pink pepper. It's the bottom notes of Ugandan vanilla and grey amber that take the feminine to sensual, and enrich the overall scent with modern, sensual allure. Is Stellanude going to be your favorite new scent? Back in the Spring, The Advice Sisters reviewed Badgley Mischka's first foray into the world of personal fragrance, called Couture. The gorgeous scent is a floriental -- my personal favorite. The designers worked with perfumer Caroline Sabas of Givaudan Fragrances to create a new fragrance that even the most sophisticated woman can relate to, along with any woman hoping for a bit of a "couture fragrance experience. For the holidays, there’s a gorgeous Holiday Gift Set $100.00 (a $140.00 value) that gives you several gifts in one. The first is the large, zippered, square box in gold metallic leather," lined in chocolate satin. Inside is the main attraction: Badgley Mischka Couture Eau De Parfum Spray (3.4 fl. oz.) (the bottle is to-die-for-gold and highly collectible), and a .5 fl. Oz. Parfum Elixir, which comes in a soft, brown velvet sack with two round, gold logo tags. The award-winning elixir itself comes in an impressive, gold metal pump engraved all over with the Badgley Mischka logo. I love this modern way to experience fragrance. The luxurious Parfum gel glides on to pulse points, leaving skin silky soft and sensually scented...for a long time! *want to know more? Read the entire review on the Advice Sisters Blog.
Gucci's iconic, Flora pattern (originally in a silk scarf specifically designed for Princess Grace of Monaco in 1966), is the inspiration for a new fragrance for women, by Gucci. Flora Eau de Toilette 1.0 fl. oz. $52 ; 1.7 fl. oz. $65; 2.5 fl. oz. $90 , like Princess Grace, is ladylike, feminine and pretty. It is the type of fragrance that can cross over between generations, shared by a mother with a discerning daughter. It has the classic elements of a true floral fragrance, but what makes it a cross-over to younger women is that it has more modern elements, too. When you first spray Flora there is an immediately discernable smell of fruit mixed with flowers. In fact, the top notes are citrus and peony. But it gets more complex at the heart, when these notes are mixed with rose and osmanthus flower. You can sense the light, fruit and fruity quality of the rose, but it is immediately countered with the velvety, leathery aspects of the osmanthus. The base is a lovely counterpoint of sandalwood and patchouli (signatures of the Gucci fragrance world.). The result is not a classic floral at all, but one with playful and sensual notes as well. The scent is light enough for daytime, but impressive enough for evening. *want to know more? Read the entire review on the Advice Sisters Blog
For designers Dolce & Gabbana, "Anthology" describes a collection -- a wardrobe if you will--of five, fragrances that answer the fundamental human questions: “Who am I? Who do I want to be?” The fragrances capture the essence of five eternal dramatis personae: The provocative "1 Le Bateleur" ; the irrepressible "3 L’Impératrice;" sensual "6 L’Amoureux;" daring "10 La Roue de la Fortune"; and hypnotizing "18 La Lune." If you're wondering why the fragrances are not simply numbered 1-5 it's because they are named also by the tarot card that inspired the scent. Some of these scents are directed towards men, and some towards women. But we all have a masculine and a feminine side, don't we? I personally tried just one : I tried sensual personality is "6 L’Amoureux." The top notes are: Bergamot, Juniper Berry and Pink Pepper, with a heart of: Cardamom,Birch Leaf, and one of my favorite notes--Orris Root. The sensual base is made up of musky notes. It is just the type of fragrance I really like -- one that will adapt to you and your body chemistry to make it something special, something precious, and something you won't smell on everyone else. *check out the rest of the Dolce and Gabbana Anthology Collection on the Advice Sisters Blog The 'WHAT WORKS" ARCHIVES has products you might have missed. Paris Hilton is a chameleon who seems to be able to change her persona at will. From her hair styles, to her love interests, to her personal life, there's always something new to focus on. Ms. Hilton has put her name on many things, including handbags, shoes, and several excellent fragrances. The latest of her fragrance hits is Siren by Paris Hilton Eau de Parfum $55.00 3.4 fl. oz, $45.00 1.7. It starts with top notes of exotic frangipani flowers and apricot nectar, with a heart of day blooming honeysuckle, rainforest orchids, budding water lily. But the drydown notes are vanilla beans and musk, with sandalwood to bring a more sensual and exotic vibe to the otherwise feminine fragrance. I think the notes jibe well with Ms. Hilton's personality: feminine and sweet, sometimes, but also a bit spicy and seductive. As she matures, so do her fragrances. And the bottle is a gorgeous collectible: a lean wave of sculpted, clear glass that curves like a mermaid's tail, with ribs fanning out like shell at the top, with a sculpted, frosted globe over the spray diffuser. You want to grab it like an Oscar statue. *learn much more about Siren by Paris Hilton on the Advice Sisters Blog
If I could design a scent that I really loved, just for myself, it would be Nanette by Nannette Lepore 0.25-oz. rollerball $18.50; 1-oz. and 2.5-oz. sprays, $48 and $68, and a 3.4-oz. Body Lotion $40.00. In fact, designer Nanette Lepore said she created this fragrance for herself. It's a modern, floriental fragrance that is warm and sensual, significant, but not overpowering. Fun to wear, but not for little girls. It lingers and lasts for hours, To my nose, Nanette's amber and woody notes are the mainstay of the fragrance. They're what I relate to most: mysterious and lovely, smooth and almost vanilla-y at drydown. You just drink them in with your nose...and sigh, happily! I just barely smell the florals including the violet note (a nod to Lepore's 11-year-old daughter's name). The presentation of this modern but sensual fragrance is beautiful, too. Eau Flirt Eau de Toilette $98.00 3.4 oz. $66.00 1.7 oz $66.00; Rollerball Mini $19.00 is the latest scent from Harvey Prince (creator of Ageless Anti-Age Perfume which we blogged about back in February 2009) and also the world’s first perfume the company says is "clinically proven to make men flirt with women." Attraction really is more than just in your eyes-- it is in your nose, too. When I wrote The Everything Dating Book 2nd Edition (Adams Media) I was asked to include information about smells and attraction. Living things, including human beings, do respond to something so invisible that you can’t even categorize it - pheromones. I won't go into the technicalities, but pheromones are chemicals that bypass conscious systems to trigger specific, often sexual, responses. Each of us has our own, unique pheromone molecule that carries a one of a kind, chemical signature. Eau Flirt is a fruity floral that is light and easy to wear. Will it bring you true love? Who knows? But it's still a nice fragrance and a great gift idea.
Avril Lavigne is a young, Canadian singer/actress/ fashion designer, who has sold more than 30 million copies of her albums worldwide. She's been dubbed as the 'pop-punk princess' but she's more than edgy, she's supremely talented in everything she does. She just had her first runway show during Fashion Week, and she has launched her first fragrance, called Black Star Eau de Parfum $29.99 30 ml; $39.00 50 ml. It is a youthful, fruity floral, but quite an energetic one. The hot pink juice tarts with notes of crisp, green pear, followed by a heart of delicate pink hibiscus flower, and sweet, juicy black plum. The drydown is composed of yummy, textured dark chocolate, adding depth to what otherwise would be a light, fresh fruity scent. The vibe is young and girly, but also edgy and fun. It's not really complicated, but it's very delicious, pleasing, and uplifting. I'm guessing that Black Star is going to be a star product for holiday gift giving. Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) has launched a new women’s fragrance called: Parisienne, created by perfumers Sophia Grojsman and Sophie Labbe of IFF. The scent is significant and lasting, undeniably lush and floral, but also sophisticated and sexy. It's a woodsy floral with some classic notes: Damask Rose, violet, peony, cranberry, patchouli, vetiver, musk and sandalwood. But it also has some interesting and more unique notes: vinyl gloss (in homage to the stiletto heel), and lacquer -- the scent of cosmetics, and of a hot night "up on the roof." Put it all together, and you've got the essence of a French woman! At first sniff, the scent feels strongly fruity, but not in the ordinary, top heavy citrus that so many fragrances, feature. Instead, you can really smell the berry. But it mixes quickly with powdery violet and rose. As the scent dries down, you really notice the rose. The notes are artfully blended into the patchouli, sandalwood and musk, to create a romantic fragrance that has staying power and packs a romantic punch. YSL Parisienne has all the sophistication, sex appeal, and mystery you'd ever want from a fragrance. Is Parisienne your nrew scent? Read more on the Advice Sisters Blog
Alexandra Balahoutis, botanical perfumer, and founder of Strange Invisible Perfumes, creates fragrances with natural essences mixed to portray a feeling as much as a distinct or expected representation. In other words, a rose scent will not necessarily smell just like what you expect of a rose. The idea is to create a vibe, not necessarily to reproduce a specific flower or fruit. The latest is "Fire and Cream" srp. $145.00 1.7 fl. Oz.; Parfum 0.25 fl. oz $195.00. Inside a simple round spray bottle is a striking, amber colored juice that immediately brings up an imagine of a brilliant sky at night, full of oranges and reds, heat and flame. The fragrance starts out with orange: top notes of hydro-distilled orange and orange blossom. The heart is golden rust: tuberose, frankincense, and white lavender. The base notes add the spice and brilliance: vetiver, sandalwood and patchouli. At first you smell spice, but at drydown, you get the "cream." Not cream actually, but a creamy undertone that mixes with the spices like a chai latte. One of our reviewers insisted the fragrance was loaded with nutmeg. My initial impression is that Fire and Cream smells like an exotic bazaar, full of incense and aromatic spices. But there are also hints of the florals that keep it from being too intense. The scent is wildly sensual, and very unusual. *learn so much more about Strange Invisible Perfumes and Fire and Cream on the Advice Sisters Blog
Prada L’Eau Ambrée Eau de Parfum 30, 50 ($76) and 80 ($104) ml Eau de Parfum, and in an 80 ml refillable atomizer ($117; refill with funnel $78) is a striking scent, but it speaks softly. It is, "discreetly impressive." Created by perfumer Daniela Andrier of Firmenich, the first, fleeting impression, is of bright citrus--actually, Italian mandarine and lemon. But the heart includes romantic florals: May rose and gardenia jasminoides. The drydown is where the real action occurs, as patchouli, Somalian oppoponax, vanilla, and modern amber mix to create a soft, sheer, amber scent. The name L’Eau Ambrée means "Ambery Water," and as it dries down, it does cover your skin with a amber as sheer and soft as a Summer cashmere sweater. The scent is beautifully blended and balanced, is neither fruity, nor floral, not oriental. It's sheer enough to wear year-round day or evening, so it would make a great signature fragrance. There's nothing heavy or demanding about it--spray with wild abandon and you still won't knock anyone over with too much fragrance. *read the rest of this review on the Advice Sisters Blog During Spring Fashion Week 2010, I was treated to a blogger's preview of some of Victorias Secret’s holiday offerings. Everything, from the packaging, to the products, to the prices, was amazing! There were so many gorgeous and affordable holiday gifts, I was honestly, dazzled. There were dozens of specially packaged presents: bath & body products, fragrances, and makeup. So many, there is no way I can review them all here. One I especially liked that I think works for girls and women of virtually all ages, is four gifts in one: The Love Spell Set $22.00. This is a wonderful gift and a good value, featuring a plum satin zippered carry bag with an enameled, Victorias Secret logo tag, into which re nestled three bath & body products scented with Love Spell fragrance: Two plastic bottles contain 4.2 fl. oz of a pearly, hydrating Body Wash, and a pump bottle of refreshing Body Mist. There's also a generously-sized 8.4 fl. oz . bottle of very nice , hydrating Body Lotion. The Love Spell fragrance is fresh and tart and fruity, featuring notes of cherry blossom, peach, and white jasmine. It’s a fun, happy way to start (or end) your day. The set is an impressive gift but it is so affordably priced, you’ll want one for yourself, too. It even comes with a pretty, scalloped gift tag so you can just fill in your name (and that of your lucky recipient), and you're ready to say "happy holidays." I have always loved the packaging for Tova's fragrances. Chic, elegant, simple boxes with simple, white, black-rimmed labels and inside, crystal-clear bottles that look like rectangles of pure ice, topped with sparkling squares of plastic over the silvery diffuser caps. And now there's a new fragrance to add to her line: Tova Signature Platinum $36.00 1.7 fl. oz. It's a new formulation that pays homage to her original, Tova Signature scent. This new, back-to-the-future treat has jasmine, bergamot, lavender, and East Indian sandalwood. It also has a higher level of musk than the original, and a higher concentration (32.5%) of the fragrance (so it's going to last longer). Should you get TOVA Signature Platinum? Nina Ricci Precious Edition Eau de Toilette Spray 2.7 oz. $72.00 for Holiday 2009 is a limited edition you will want to own, not just for the gorgeous packaging and bottle, but also because it really smells good: a mostly fruit with floral vibe featuring top notes of Calabrian bergamot and lemon, along with intoxicating and fresh lime. The heart is peony, moonflower and apple, and slighter more gourmand base notes of apple wood, mixed with pralines and musk. Created by Firmenich perfumers Olivier Cresp and Jacques Cavallier, on my skin the scent smells lightly like a French lemon tart with a buttery crust, neither too fruity, too sweet, or too tart. It's delicious! The bottle will be this season's most coveted collectible. The metallic mauve-ish pink bottle has shiny, silver "leaves" encrusted with dozens of sparkling, clear, Swarovski crystals--absolutely gorgeous! Read more about this beautiful bottle and it's delicious fragrance on the AdviceSisters Blog
The Queen by Queen Latifah 3.4 oz. $59.00; 1.7 oz. $49.00 . It is, in a word, glorious. As with many celebrity fragrances, this celeb wants her own personality and philosophy to be infused into the bottle, and like everything else she has done, she's done it exceedingly well. Perfumer, Steve Mercado, makes beautiful music with Latifah in this scent. He is also a musician as well as a perfumer, who has spent the last 20 years as a perfumer at Givaudan and Symrise, and has been at Fragrance Resources since 2002. The Queen is classified as an "oriental" but like Queen Latifah herself, it is multi-faceted. Orientals are for confident, strong women, but this one is also a bit restrained, feminine and tempered with elegance. It's a creamy, sensual spice you are smelling, not a harsh or brash one. Top notes are a golden accord (reminiscent of aged Tequila), and citrus notes of Italian Bergamot and Mediterranean Mandarin. A heart of rare Baie Rose mixes with feminine Jasmine Noir, cognac, and a spicy hit of Moroccan Coriander. The sensuality in this fragrance comes directly from the base notes: Indonesian Patchouli and precious Sandalwood and a generous dose of delicious Vanilla and Tonka Absolute, plus Egyptian Incense and Musk. *Read the entire review on the Advice Sisters Blog.
When a celebrity puts his or her name on the bottle. it's a good bet that the fragrance will appeal to his or her fans. But the true test of a celebrity fragrance is whether or not it will appeal to the rest of the fragrance-sniffing public. Jessica Simpson Fancy Love Eau de Parfum $59.00 3.4 fl. oz,; $49.00 1.7 fl. oz. will definitely appeal younger women who adore Jessica Simpson and want to look like her, and perhaps, smell like her, but women of every age will think: " Wow! yummy smell!." The overall vibe is a delicious, juicy, peach--at least at the top. The perfumers, along with Simpson, were Yves Cassar, Celine Barel, Pascal Gaurin and Clement Gavarry. The actual top notes are goji leaf, bergamot, peach blossom, and pink champagne. you can really smeel the peachyiness (but it's a luscious, pulpy peach, not overly sweet or fruity). The heart is floral (what else could you use for a dreamy, romantic fragrance?). There is lotus, peonies, plumeria, jasmine, and Turkish rose. But at the bottom, there's a bit of sensual gourmand going on: patchouli, sensual musk, blonde woods and creamy amber. These notes temper the fruits and florals, to make the scent sensual without being too exotic. The dreamy, romantic nature of the scent, will make it a favorite of romantics of all types. HOLIDAY HOME FRAGRANCES
Palettes by Tod Young is a line of home fragrances that coordinates the main color palette in your home, with it's own, distinct fragrance. There are six different color palettes: Jewel tones, neutral tones, primary tones, gray tones, and pastel tones. You could call his candles and room sprays: "cologne for your home!" For me, at least, the colors I prefer in my life really did correspond well with the scents I liked the most. The Palettes 10 oz candles are a soy blend in a frosted glass container that burns for approx. 80 hours. There’s also a 3.6 fl. Oz. Room Spray. Read the entire review on the Advice Sisters Blog.
Home scents make every day a little more merry, and bright. The Thymes has two lovely collections that smell like holiday spirit: Frasier Fir, and Moonflower collections. Frasier Fir smells like just like a Christmas tree farm-- perfect home scent of uplifting, fresh, pine featuring Siberian fir needles, Cedarwood and sandalwood. They the lovely Home Fragrance Mist $18.00 3 oz. in a brushed silver metal spray bottle, and the Votive Candle $12.00 small, $28.00 50 hrs. decorated with a delicate, pine needle graphic. Moonflower is a sensual floriental blend of cinnamon, sugared quince, myrtle leaves and smooth cognac that is a nice, festive body scent. The Moonflower Body Lotion $26.00 9.25 oz. shimmers softly on your skin and has glycerin to hydrate, Vitamin E to protect, and it's paraben free. Follow with a spritz of Moonglow Eau de Parfum $49.00 1.75 oz. It's quite a lovely fragrance--spicy and sexy but not overpowering. The deep plum, floral graphics on the bottles and the mauve, plum and gold metallic cartons make these great for gift-giving. Both Moonflower and Frasier Fir come in a variety of other home and bath/body items and to make these even more festive, there's a touch of sparkle in all of the candles, body lotions and soaps.
Everyone's into "eco chic" these days, and a "green" gift is a truly thoughtful and appreciated one. For under $20.00 you can treat yourself and everyone on your list (especially those hard to shop for people) with a Living Naturals Essential Oil Diffuser $19.99. This eco-friendly plug-in diffuser uses 100% natural, high grade essential oils, without any coloring agents or harsh chemicals. You get the diffuser unit, that swivels so you can fit it into any electrical outlet, and a bottle of essential oil made from certified, sustainable resources-flowers, seeds, roots, fruits, woods and plants, in four scents: Spearmint, Lemongrass, Herbal Pine or Mandarin Coconut. There is an on/off switch, and a bar that lets you adjust the intensity of the scent (but even on high, the fragrance was not intrusive). The Advice Sisters have reviewed similar plug-and-play, air-freshening, aromatherapy units, but this one gently and subtly diffuses the scent into the air. You will sense that it is there, but it won't knock you out with a blast of something "chemical" when you walk into the room. I particularly like the Mandarin Coconut Milk, a blend of amber and jasmine, mandarin and cedar wood oils. The scent is comforting, soft, creamy, not too sweet. I liked the lemongrass verbena scent as well, with sophisticated notes of Egyptian geranium, lemongrass and lime that smell tart, not like cheap lemonade! I didn't try the other two scents, but I'm guessing they'll be lovely. Since these come in 7.10 fl. oz. glass refill bottles, you can change the fragrances as you wish. Even the gift-ready carton is an eco-friendly, 90% recycled paper with soy-based inks. Have a happy, green holiday--it's shaping up to smell, great!
The Advice Sisters gushed about Josie Natori’s signature scent: Natori, just a few months ago. It can be challenging to give a give of personal scent, but a scented home fragrance is always appropriate, and welcomed. One that is sure to impress, is the Natori Perfumed Candle 6.35 oz $75.00. The striking, round square, matte black votive base has a shiny black top with a smooth, oval "river stone" handle. The votive feels cool in your hand, a counterpoint to the flickering flame illuminating a creamy white candle infused with the exotic and beautiful floriental fragrance of Natori. This is a superb gift --one that is not just luxurious and special, but one that will last for several months (depending upon how often and long you light it). The scent, and the black votive, enhances every decor in any season...but especially now, during the holidays.
Mrs. Meyers Clean Day has all sorts of lovely, scented household products. For the holidays, there's Iowa Pine, a scent that smells like Christmas tress, but with something extra: a tinge of clove and cedar, just to add some additional spice. It's intoxicating! There are several different products, all budget-minded but gift-worthy. My favorite is the Scented Soy Candle $9.99 in creamy off white, with a 35 hour burn time. It comes in a traditional, French-style fluted jelly jar with shiny black cap. The wax is generously infused with the Iowa Pine scent, so you really get a home fragrance you can smell, when you light this candle. It makes a perfect little thank-you gift for a holiday host or hostess, too. For home or for gift-giving, I also really like the Holiday Hand Care Set $9.99. It is so affordable, but impressive. Inside a decorated, green mini cardboard "crate" are nestled two plastic pump bottles containing 8 oz. of Hand Lotion, and Liquid Hand Soap. The lotion has soothing, nurturing, moisturizing olive oil, aloe vera and glycerin. The has aloe vera and olive oil to keep hands soft, even during the drying, Winter months...and they smell like pine boughs--so festive! It's a great set for you, for your holiday hosts, and for everyone on your list.

The smell of fresh-cut pine boughs is an automatic "feel food" scent of the season. One company that really gets it right is Lady P rimrose. Their "Fresh Cut" scent smells aromatic and spicy, and all the products are packaged in chic, hard-sided, dark green boxes with black accents. There are a variety of gift-ables in this scent, and no matter which one you get for your home or give as a gift, it will be a welcome part of your holiday season. You can't go wrong with the Boxed "Fresh Cut" Candle $46.00 12 oz. with a 45-hr. burn time, or the "Fresh Cut" Boxed Soaps $36.00. that combine a vegetable base with glycerin and natural oatmeal. Both of these gifts are appropriate for just about everyone, including those hard to please, people. I love the candle, made of pure white, vegetable wax with an all natural lead-free wick. Use it for your holiday centerpiece, ringed with pine or holly, fruits and nuts. The soap set features three large, round, hard-milled soaps, with that gorgeous pine scent,. and they're embossed with a pretty, pine bough design. Scent your own home with a very elegant Oil Burner Set $36.00. It features a gift box, a hammered column of porcelain, glazed in shiny bronze (it looks like burnished metal), a tea light, and a small bottle of Fresh Cut Home Fragrance Oil, to add in the tiny well in the top of the burner. Light the tea light that sits at the bottom in a little cubbyhole. Several holes on each side of the column, vent the scent, When the scent heats up is smells like pine boughs! This is a fun alternative to scented candles. Treat yourself to some Lady Primrose and also note that these products are biodegradable, eco-friendly items!

It's my responsibility to describe products in a way that offers information, but allows you to use your own, good judgment about whether to buy it or not. I have tested thousands of products and that gives me a strong background on which to base my comments, but in the end, the decision to try something is yours, alone. A Signature Approach Many online publications and blogs find it easier and more economical to just post photos and press releases of products "as if" they have actually used them, or get paid for "advertorials" (reviews written in exchange for money). I only allow genuine reviews. That is, I (or a qualified reviewer) actually try the products reviewed. This approach takes much more time and effort, but it is what distinguishes The Advice Sisters from a lot of others. I know you appreciate the difference. A Note About Compensation: I never have, and never will, write about products using just high resolution photos and press releases, without experiencing the product "in person." These type of "faux" reviews add to the junk and clutter on the Internet, without offering anything substantive or new. In order to write real reviews of real products, however, I use samples provided by a company or a public relations firm. There is no way I could write valid, responsible, up-close-and-personal reviews without them. Sample products and services are not nearly "compensation" for the tremendous amount of effort it takes to write genuine reviews, nor do free samples influence my experienced opinion of products in any Advice Sisters content. I do not use "advertorial" (paid content) and, when I choose to include paid advertisements, they are clearly identifiable.
